Braeside School Garden
Project DescriptionA sustainable garden broadcasts Braeside School’s values and philosophy to students, staff, parents, and neighbours. Children are carrying the message home and to their community.
The garden is a naturalized area with numerous accessible path systems designed to enhance the school yard experience and attract wildlife. An outdoor classroom and amphitheatre are included in the design for learning and school activities.
Plants are primarily trees, shrubs and grasses, mixing native species with some drought tolerant nursery plants. Asphalt is re-used by cutting out pathways in the existing surface. The gaps in the asphalt become planting pockets. These planting pockets are rain gardens that absorb moisture, slow down storm water run-off, and reduce flooding in the area.

Maintenance
Plant material will need to be watered for the first two years. Minimal maintenance will be required once the plant material is established.
Plant material is primarily trees and shrubs due to lifespan longevity and lower maintenance requirements.
Mulch will be applied every third season to suppress weed growth and store moisture in the rain gardens.
Logs will eventually need to be re-placed. Braeside School will appoint a Landscape Committee responsible for maintaining the naturalized area. A detailed plan will be provided by the Landscape Committee prior to installation.
