Personal Reflection After 4 Years In Business

“Don’t throw out the baby with the bath water.”Marriage is like having a baby. The wedding is exciting but developing a good marriage takes a lot of work. A business is similar. Conception may be easy but maintaining a good business is quite challenging. This is the 4-year anniversary of Atlanta Wedding Ideas. I’m sharing my personal testimony in hopes to encourage anyone starting a business and to educate couples about planning their wedding. In both cases things might not happen the way you expect but don’t give up!

“God plans everything for a reason.”I wasn’t even looking for this opportunity. While shopping with my daughter, I picked up a magazine that advertised a lot of home-based businesses. I just wanted to contact the advertisers to offer my website services. When I went to the magazine website, I noticed it was part of a franchise of other magazines and there was an opportunity to start Atlanta Wedding Ideas. I had advertising and marketing experience but I didn’t know much about the wedding industry. I didn’t even have a wedding. We attended several of our friends’ weddings and saw how stressed they were on their wedding day and how much they complained about the cost. We lived in California and my family lived in New York. We chose to get married on a beautiful Saturday at our church in CA with our pastor, his wife and 2 witnesses. A few months later my parents gave us a reception at their house in NY.

“We’ve been made to endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.”Last year was very difficult for me. I had a devastating family crisis that exhausted our finances. I was ready to give up this business before I realized it wasn’t my decision. Every time I prayed for help, God’s answer was to hold on. Many people give up just before their breakthrough. When I look back at where I started to where I am now, I am so grateful. I see how this business is blessing others. I’m connecting couples with great people that offer great service.

“You can’t play unless you get in the game.”The wedding industry is very competitive. I have my area of expertise and I leverage

services with other businesses. Unfortunately, there are many people who would rather imitate instead of collaborate. I have laid a solid foundation for my business and I’m able to face competition without sacrificing my goals and values. Couples should be able to get the best products and services that they can afford. I am committed to finding businesses that offer unique products and services that typically don’t advertise. Many of my advertisers use to rely on “word-of-mouth” marketing but that is very limiting and they are ready to grow their business.

If not, it’s hobby and not a business.• Do they answer the phone professionally or have a voicemail to leave a message?• If they are not available when you call, do they return your call timely?• Do they have a website to research their products and services at your convenience?• Do they respond to your emails?• Is their pricing competitive or do they try to offer you more than you need?• Do they claim to specialize in everything?

“It takes a village.”This business wouldn’t be successful without the support of a lot of people. First I give honor and glory to Jesus Christ who strengthens me. Second are my parents who are my examples of godly ethics and have been happily married for almost 50 years. Third is my husband of 17 years who unconditionally loves and supports me. He often tries to make me laugh when I feel like crying. He continues to sacrifice a lot of our quality time to allow me to build this business. Fourth is one of my advertisers, Georgette Lake with My Special Events, who has become a true friend. She helped me through my difficult times with her diligent service and creative ideas that benefit everyone. Fifth is Design-360 for faithfully making us all look great with high-quality ad designs.
