Geographical Facts

Mount Carmel is a coastal mountain range in northern Israel stretching from the

Mediterranean Sea(Haifa Bay in the north) towards the southeast (the Jezreel valley on the

east). The Carmel is not very high. Its peak reaches 540 meters above sea level.

Several towns are located on the range: Yokneam on the eastern ridge, Zichron Yaakov on the

southern ridge, the Druze communities of Daliyat al Carmel and Isfiya on the central part of

the ridge, and the city of Haifa on the north western edge.

The attractions

Caesarea

Archaeological restorationLocation:

Caesarea is located on the Mediterranean coast, about midway between Haifa and

Tel Aviv.

About Caesarea:

Caesarea founded as a small Phoenician port city. Archaeological excavations

discovered remains from various periods: the most important remains are a complex

of fortifications of the Crusader city and the Roman Theater. After the battle of

Actium, the city was given to King Herod by Augustus Caesar. King Herod built a

harbor. King Herod named the harbor in honor of Emperor Augustus.

An Aqueduct, originally built by Herod, was expanded by the Romans in the second

century CE. It conveyed water to the Caesarea from the springs of Mount Carmel.

Following Herod's death Caesarea became the place of residence for Jewish Roman

commissioners and the provincial capital of Judea.

The port:

In the port you can watch the Travel through Time display, which transforms the visit

into a historical trek through time. You can walk on the paved path across from the

artist's yard and enjoy the restaurants.

The Bird's Mosaic:

The mosaic is part of the floor of the most extravagant palace ever uncovered in

Israel. The framework of the mosaic included fruit trees and animals (lion, tiger, bear,

wild boar, ibex, dog, elephant, deer and bull) bordering 120 round medallions, each

contained a bird.

The Aqueduct:

The aqueduct was built by Herod at the time the new city was founded and dedicated

to the Roman Caesar, Augustus. It brought the water from the southern side of Mount

Carmel.

Zichron Yaakov

Zichron Yaakov is a small town 35 kilometers south of Haifa. It is located at the

southern end of the Carmel mountain range overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.

Zichron Yaakov is one of the first Jewish settlements in the country and was founded

by baron Edmond James de Rothschild and named in honor of his father.

The pedestrian zone (Midrahov):

The town has a historic center that was restored: it is the main street which includes

landmark buildings, called "path of the wine, houses, coffeehouses and boutique

shops.

Carmel Winery:

A center for wine culture is located at Carmel Winery's. The complex includes a

wine shop, restaurant, tasting rooms, a small cinema and barrel room in the

underground cellar. It is the largest winery in Israel.Visitors will learn about the history of Israeli wine from the 1880's right up to the

recent times.

Ramat Hanadiv Gardens:

Location:

The entrance is located on the route between Zichron Yaakov and Binyamina (route

652).

Things to see:

The memorial gardens: a combination of European formality and Mediterranean-style

plantings.

The nature park: offers visitors Circular hiking trails with observation points.

Visitors' pavilion: the film "Beyond the Gardens" presents the story of Ramat

Hanadiv.

Ein Hod

The artists' village is located on the slopes of Mount Carmel, overlooking the

Mediterranean Sea and Atlit fortress. It is the only artists' village in Israel. The art

exhibited in the village is contemporary- painting and sculpture, prints, ceramics,

jewelry, textile, craft, glasswork and Judaic. The village offers restaurants and cafes.

The Nisco Museum of Mechanical Music:

It is the finest collections of antique music boxes and other Mechanical Music

instruments in the Middle East.

Janco Dada Museum:

The museum seeks to preserve the legacy and vision of Marcel Janco, as well as the

ideas of the Dada movement.

Nahal Mearot (Caves Stream) Nature Reserve

Nahal Mearot (Caves Stream) Nature Reserveis a site of human evolution at Mount

Carmel in Haifa region. The site was proclaimed as universal value by UNESCO in

2012. The site indicates the prehistoric man's settlement and an evidence of a first

burial.

Daliyat Al Carmel

Druze market:

Every Saturday many visitors come to Daliyat Al Carmel which is one of the largest

and most popular in the north of Israel. On both side of main street stands and stores

offer a variety of finds of every type, color and shape: clothes and shoes, toys, house

ware, souvenirs, various authentic items, baskets and carpets.

Mount Carmel (Muhraka):

The monastery is situated behind the Druze village Daliyat Al Carmel.

The monastery is the second largest site on the Carmel ridge. According to Jewish,

Christian, Druze and Muslim belief it is on the summit that the dramatic battle

between Elijah and the prophets of Baal took place.

Haifa

The Baha'i Gardens:

Mount Carmel is known for its importance to the Baha'i serving as their spiritual and

administrative headquarters. The golden dome shrine is situated at the heart of the

Carmel slopes and is one of Haifa's most distinctive symbols. The shrine is

surrounded by spectacular terraced gardens sculpted on the mountain side. The

gardens stretch uphill for the length of one kilometer reaching a width of 400 meters.

The 29 bronze sculptures in the garden are masterpieces created and presented to the

City of Haifa by the sculptor Ursula Malbin. The gardens enable a remarkable view of

the city of Haifa from the Bahia shrine and gardens, Haifa harbor, German Colony, the

bay area and up to Rosh Hanikra (if weather will permit).

Stella Maris Church:

According to tradition, Elijah hid in the cave at the slopes of the sea star ridge. The

Carmelite Christians sanctified an additional cave at the top of the ridge and erected a

Large monastery above, which today constitutes their world center.

The German Colony was built in 1869 by the Templers who arrived from Germany.The German Colony is one of the major areas of entertainment in the city.
