Calixto Seca Takes Leadership Role

Calixto Seca ’88 continues to make strides in his professional career. He recently accepted the nomination as President of the US Mexico Border Health Association. On July 11, a special induction ceremony was held at the Laredo Center for the Arts where Calixto took oath

surrounded by family, colleagues, friends and international delegates. The USMBHA/AFMES is an international organization promoting the improvement of the health and living conditions of the people of the US –Mexico Border. He is currently employed with the Texas Department of State Health Services as the Binational Planner serving Region 8. Calixto was honored by TAMIU with a Latino Achievement award in Spring of 2007.

Navarro began her career

with IBC Bank as a file

clerk at the age of 16.

Throughout her 29 years

at IBC Bank, she has

quickly moved up the

c o r p o r a t e l a d d e r

o b t a i n i n g g r e a t e r

responsibility within the

corporation. In 1998, she

was promoted to Senior

Executive Vice President,

a role which puts her

second-in-command to

President and CEO,

Dennis E. Nixon. Imelda

also serves on the board

of directors of IBC Bank

and its holding company,

International Bancshares

Corporation.

Ed Sherwood ’93 longtime Laredo businessman received the “Aldo Award” named in

memory of the Laredo Mayor Aldo Tatangelo. This award is bestowed by the Logistics and

Manufacturing Association.

Aurora Dominguez ’03 graduated from the University of Texas Health

Science Center at San Antonio with a degree in medicine. She is

completing her residency in obstetrics and gynecology in Washington DC.

Rolando Ramos Jr. ’06 has recently launched a non-profit organization

in Laredo, TX. SCORE is dedicated to educating entrepreneurs with the

formation, growth and success of small businesses nationwide.

Camelia Alfaro Benavides ’89 is the owner of Children’s Fountain

of Knowledge here in Laredo, TX. Her husband Fidencio Benavides

’97 is a systems analyst with Hayes-Lemmerz. They both live in Laredo with their four

girls.

Narsimloo Nimmalapalli ’05 is employed with HCL America Inc as their Senior

Business Analyst and lives in New Jersey. In his free-time he plays cricket and enjoys

watching the NBA.

Fernando Garcia ’92 Principal at Laredo’s United DD Hachar Elementary School, has

been recognized by Cambridge Who’s Who for showing dedication, leadership and

excellence in all aspects of education administration.

Dr. Regina C. Aune is the new dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. TAMIU

Provost Pablo Arenaz said Dr. Aune brings proven leadership skills to the dean’s position as

the Dr. F.M. Canseco School of Nursing continues to address the current national nursing

shortage.

“Dr. Aune brings a wealth of experience, including having served as former dean of Gallen

College of Nursing in San Antonio and as chair of the International Expeditionary Education

and Training Department at the United States Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine in

Brooks City-Base, Texas. At TAMIU, dean Aune will bring the School of Nursing to a new

level of growth, research and nursing education,” Dr. Arenaz said.

Dr. Aune holds a Ph.D. in leadership and policy from the University of Utah. Her M.S. in nursing was earned at the

University of California, San Francisco and her B.S.N. at St. John College of Cleveland in Cleveland, Ohio.

Her research interests include "Combat Readiness: Hygiene Issues Related to Military Women," "Prenatal Care in and

out of the U.S.," "Ability of Aeromedical Crew Members to Perform Selected Nursing Tasks in Conventional and

Chemical Warfare Environments," "The Career Anchors of Men in Professional Nursing," and "The Career Anchors of

Selected Groups of Nurses."

She has published in the "Encyclopedia of Nursing Research and Military Medicine." And, she has also served as journal

reviewer for Military Medicine and Internet Journal of Nursing Practice. Dr. Aune is a recipient of the Exceptional

Service Medal from the Board of Regents of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. She has also

received both the Presidential Award and the Meritorious Service Award from the Uniformed Services University of the

Health Sciences.

Special honors include having named an Eagle in the Gathering of Eagles Capstone event for the U.S. Air Force’s Air

Command and Staff College, being inducted into the Airlift Tanker Association Hall of Fame as a member of the

Aeromedical Evacuation Legacy Team and having had the Aune-Paget Aeromedical Evacuation Trophy named after

herself and SSgt Michael Paget, USAF. She has also received the USAF Cheney Award for valor in a humanitarian mission

connected with aircraft.

Professional Women’s Association, Financial Women

International, Laredo Commission for Women, Mercy

Regional Medical Center, Leadership Texas, and Casa de

Misericordia.

In 2005, Hispanic Business Magazine recognized Navarro as

one of its 2005 Outstanding Women Leaders and one of the

100 Most Influential Hispanics in the country.
