SAVE THE DATE! Sunday, September 21 Celebrate Active Aging with OLLI

Each September, Active Aging Week brings a myriad of wellness opportunities to adults age 50+ in communities across America. It is a time for individuals to

explore FREE activities that support vibrant and healthy living. For the past four years, OLLI partnered with the Wellness Connection at O’Connor Woods offering our lectures free during their annual celebrations.

OLLI@Pacific’s Celebration of Aging activity on Sunday, September 21 reminds older adults that new experiences may lead to discovering activities they value—and perhaps meaningful new directions, too.

It will be open to the public and offered as a FREE educational program provided in a fun atmosphere. The afternoon will be filled with talks by esteemed university faculty Robert Halliwell, PhD and Tanya Storch, PhD, community experts and special guest, Jan Montague, whose career has

focused on the advancement of whole-person wellness education, strategies and outcomes. Our event ends with a wine reception amidst community organizations that may also offer a free activity during the week.

Active Aging Week reminds older adults that they can do many things and enjoy them. Our mini-conference will give people a taste of OLLI and expose them to new friends, adventures and the

community. Join us for a memorable experience and invite your friends.

In an event this large, volunteers are always needed. If you can help the day of the event or distribute posters and flyers to other organizations, please call the office at 946-7658.

To plan adequate seating for the breakout sessions and place food and beverage orders, this event requires advance registration, which can be done easily and quickly on a mobile phone by texting the keyword: active to 209-222-6535 or online at www.OLLICelebration.com

Professor Jim Blankenship, Pacific Emeritus, received a Bachelor of Science Degree and Master’s from Texas A&M University. In 1972, he received his PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Utah. He spent two years at the Medical College of Georgia in the Cell and Molecular Biology Department. From 1977 until his retirement, he worked in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology in the School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.

Dr. Blankenship is a lifelong learner. He likes the fact that OLLI has so many offerings and areas other than science! His good friends, Nancy and Mike Sharp, encouraged him to join.

Dr. Blankenship’s first experience with an OLLI course was a teleconference from the

Smithsonian on Early American paintings. He has attended every Monday lecture but one and has enjoyed all of them. The most notable lecture for him was a presentation by Larry Grimes who brought to the lecture two of his trained falcons. Jim is a bird watcher and he found the lecture fascinating.

Making new friends and meeting old ones is a wonderful aspect of OLLI. He reconnected with friends he hasn’t seen in many years and has enjoyed many activities with them outside of OLLI.

Jim volunteers as a science mentor at New Hope School in Thornton, meeting with teachers and students. His presentations, to no one’s surprise, revolve around science.

Jim and Lola Blankenship

He believes OLLI is such an important program for the community. We welcome Dr. Blankenship to OLLI and hope he continues to enjoy the advantages OLLI provides to all.

OLLI Joy of Singing Class Reaches Out written by Meralee Shannon

We have enjoyed this class for several semesters under the superb leadership of Magen Solomon. We weren’t ready for our singing together to end last Spring and hoped we could continue our friendships outside of class. At our last class in April, we formed a committee to undertake a new venture. Our accompanist, Gay Goaslind, asked us to join her at her retirement community performances. We have gone to Bayside, Camlu, Stacie Chalet, Creekside, LaSalette and Villa Marche. We sing 10 show tunes from our 100 song repertoire.

Our audiences have been receptive and our time together mutually fulfilling.

Participants have been Jan Beyer, Susan Shaw, Barbara Heiser, Lilli Kizlin, Lynne and Dan Terry, Jonnie Sullivan, Susan Scott, Gayle Woolley, Linda Whittock, Shirley Rivinius, Dorothy Levy and myself. We enjoy each other’s company outside of singing as well. We’ve been pleased that our joy of singing has blossomed into outreach and friendships. Thanks to all the singers, Magen, Gay and OLLI!

On a side note, we are pleased that although Magen has stepped into her dream job as the Artistic Director of the San Francisco Bach Choir, she will lead a seven-week Joy of Singing course this fall. Join us in congratulating her — Magen will truly be missed!
