Champion mare Winx (Street Cry) was crowned both the Highest Rated Turf Horse in the world and the highest rated Filly / Mare in the

world at the Longines World’s Best Racehorse awards ceremony in London yesterday.

The five-year-old finished third in the World’s Best Racehorse category on an official rating of 132, just behind the 134-rated Breeder’s Cup Classic (Gr 1, 10f)

winner Arrogate (Unbridled’s Song) who edged out California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) on 133 to take top spot.

Australian-bred Winx, who was purchased for $230,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in 2013 from the draft of Coolmore Stud, took her earnings tally to $9,348,175 when winning her second Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) in October, a performance which earned her a rating of 132, superior to

the rating of 130 earned by Black Caviar (Bel Esprit) who finished joint top of the rankings with Treve (Motivator) in 2013.

Premier Sydney trainer Chris Waller was on hand at Claridge’s in Mayfair to collect her awards, and told ANZ Bloodstock News that it had been a huge team effort to reach such heights with the Fairway Thoroughbreds-bred Winx.

“It’s a huge privilege to be here. It’s a reward for the hard work that my team puts into a horse like her,” Waller said.

“Identifying talent is not easy. Working out what you do with it when you do get it is something that people underestimate. My name is next to Winx as her trainer, but it’s the work put in by the team at home that make horses like her and moments like this possible.

“She had an important track gallop this morning (Tuesday), so the show goes on, but it’s an effort that we are all proud of, and being able to come to a stage like this, being able to meet trainers like Bob Baffert, it’s a huge honour.”

Shortly after a video montage of Winx’s recent victories had been played out at the ceremony, Waller said that being involved with a mare of her ability was a humbling experience.

“That (video montage) was probably the first time I’ve sat and watched a sequence of her wins, you just don’t get time to sit and watch the races back and take it all in, so it does get emotional,” he said.

“We all love and respect racing and it’s history. To get a horse that starts to create it’s own piece of history that you are directly involved with, it’s very humbling.”

Waller, who left England to fly back to Sydney last night, confirmed that Winx is on target for the Apollo Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) on 11 February, and that he has one eye on an overseas preparation next year.

“She’ll be back in the Apollo on 11 February and will end up in the Queen Elizabeth in mid April,” he said.

“We need her competing at her highest level. Given her recognition and the expectations around her, every race she has to be at her best.

“It’s a short racing prep with just the four starts, but that will give us longevity, because we understand the expectation to take her and show her to the world.

“Not just for one race, but probably a preparation which could involve four or five races. We have huge respect for Hong Kong and

Dubai, but one thing that makes Europe such a strong possibility is the close proximity of so many race tracks, what with Ireland, England and France.

“There are obviously some top races over further, but there would be plenty of options over a mile for her here.

“We’re flying back out tonight. It’s 40 degrees in Sydney and freezing here, but I won’t moan about the heat or the cold, though we could do with something in the middle!

“It’s always a great experience coming over, as it was a few years ago when we came to Royal Ascot. Racing just takes you on an amazing journey, you meet so many great people and work with great athletes and horses, it’s a dream come true.”

Waller Discusses Plans For Other Leading Performers

Waller was also able to provide an update on some of his other leading performers on Tuesday, with the multiple Group One winner Preferment (Zabeel) on course for a meeting with Winx in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) on 8 April.

“He’s going well, trialled well the other day. He’s a headline horse himself but has been made to look second rate in our stable because of Winx,” Waller told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“He’s a genuine Group One performer, he’s a Derby winner, he’s a stallion prospect as a son of Zabeel. He’ll be aimed towards the Queen Elizabeth and he will probably take in the Australian Cup, the race he won last year, on the way.”

Rosehill-based Waller confirmed that From Within (Not A Single Doubt) was still on a path to the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m)

following her defeat in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) on 14 January.

Waller could not hide his disappointment at the result, where she finished 13th having been sent off the joint $4 favourite with Houtzen (I Am Invincible), but he reaffirmed his belief that she will still make up into a high-class filly

“She’s pulled up with a broken heart, but that’s racing and two-year-old racing especially,” Waller said.

“It was only her second start but we expected it to be her best start. She came back into the stable today after seven days off and she’ll be aimed towards the Golden Slipper.

“We’ll make sure she’s back to her best by running her in the Reisling two weeks before the Slipper, and if she doesn’t perform in that she’ll be spelled.”

Randwick on 11 February has been pencilled in as Winx’s return date, but it could also see the reappearance of classy three-year-old fillies Foxplay (Foxwedge) and Omei Sword (High Chaparral) in the Light Fingers Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m).

Dual Group Two winner Foxplay has been off since running fourth in the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) in October, but Waller reserved special praise for Omei Sword who finished second to Astern (Medaglia d’Oro) in the Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at her last start in September.

“They could well resume in the same race (the Light Fingers Stakes) on 11 February. With Foxplay what you see is what you get, she’s a tough filly,” Waller said.

“Omei Sword has exceptional talent. She ran second in probably the highest-rated three-year-old race against the boys in the Golden Rose.

“She’s coming back to race against her own sex and she will be up against older fillies at her third start in the Coolmore Classic. She could be a Doncaster Mile horse, she’s very talented, by High Chaparral and she’s a big strong, muscular filly.”

Seven Accept For Australia Day CupIn-form Destiny’s Kiss (Power Of Destiny) heads the field for tomorrow’s Australia Day Cup (Listed, 2400m) at Randwick. The Joe Pride-trained eight-year-old gelding, who won the race last year, will face six rivals including the Chris Waller-trained stablemates Index Linked (Dansili) and The Rumour File (Dansili). Jockey Brenton Avdulla will ride Destiny’s Kiss after Josh Parr partnered him to third in the Gosford Cup (Listed, 2100m) on 13 January. Avdulla won the Tattersall’s Cup (Listed, 2400m) on the gelding at Randwick on 2 January.

Dream Folk Aims To Go One Better In CupTrainer Greg Hickman is hopeful consistent stayer Dream Folk (Dream Ballad), a half-brother to multiple Group One-winning champion Tie The Knot (Nassipour), can improve on his second placing in last year’s Australia Day Cup at Randwick. The seven-year-old, who will be ridden by Andrew Adkins, finished second over 2400 metres at Randwick on 14 January in Benchmark 83 company. “He needs the 2400 metres and I’d like to think he can be very competitive,” Hickman said. “He’s run second and third at his last couple and these types of races suit him.” Click here to view the Randwick acceptances.

Baker Confident About Music MagnateTrainer Bjorn Baker believes Group One winner Music Magnate (Written Tycoon), who resumes in Saturday’s Expressway Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Rosehill, has returned better than ever. Now five, Music Magnate won the Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1, 1350m) last preparation but was forced to miss the spring after contracting a virus. “He is really well. He’s had two good trials and is moving better than ever,” Baker said. “He’s had

a good break to get over a virus in the spring. His coat is in good order. At times it has looked ordinary but he is spot on.” Menari Set To Step UpTrainer Gerald Ryan has his sights set on this year’s Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) with debut-winning Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) colt Menari. The two-year-old colt won impressively by one and three quarter lengths at Randwick on 14 January against a small field and he takes his next step in Saturday’s Canonbury Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Rosehill. Ryan said Menari and Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) second Chauffeur (Snitzel) ranked as the stable’s leading chances during the autumn. “He has won a race and Chauffeur has also won and finished second in the Magic Millions so they are the best two at the moment,” Ryan said. “I think Menari is a Golden Slipper type.” Click here to view the Rosehill weights.

Sunday Escape To Back Up At FlemingtonConsistent Sale-trained sprinter Sunday Escape (Hard Spun) will back up in Saturday’s Kensington Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Flemington after being placed over 1000 metres at Moonee Valley last Saturday. The Andrew Murray-trained six-year-old, who has won four of his 26 starts with another 14 placings, will again be ridden by Dwayne Dunn. “The only reason I’m looking at the race is because he’s too well not to,” Murray said. “I rang Dwayne’s manager the other day and told him that and he said ‘you had better have a go again’. I think the horse is only coming to his top now.” Click here to view Saturday’s Flemington weights. Weir Could Have Six In C F OrrTrainer Darren Weir could have as many as six runners in next month’s C F Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield, headed by versatile gelding Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars). Morning Brief

Heart Bart is likely to be joined in the C F Orr Stakes by stablemates Palentino (Teofilo), former Japanese-trained horse Tosen Stardom (Deep Impact), Lucky Hussler (Husson), Real Love (Desert King) and former New Zealand-trained gelding Humidor (Teofilo). Of Tosen Stardom, Weir told Racing.com: "He seems to be coming along quite well. He's sound and well and obviously has got really good ability and got a good pedigree as well so we've got to head to the good races for his career after racing."

Wazzenme Aimed At Australian GuineasCaulfield trainer Stuart Webb is targeting the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington in March with his talented three-year-old Wazzenme (Wanted). In the spring the colt was twice stakes placed against his own age before finishing well back in the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). Since returning to Webb’s stable, Wazzenme has progressed well and finished second in a Caulfield jump out yesterday. "He was good, very lazy. He ran second in his trial to a nice horse of Ciaron's [Sheriff John Stone]," Webb told Racing.com. "He'll probably go Saturday-week to the Manfred Stakes at Caulfield, but I'd have thought he'll need the run.”

Legless Veuve Also Set For GuineasLegless Veuve (Pins), like stablemate Wazzenme, will be set for the Australian Guineas after showing promise during the spring. The three-year-old filly won the Tranquil Star Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) last September but finished last in the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at her following start. "Legless Veuve, I keep looking at her and thinking, 'you'll be such a lovely four-year-old'," Webb told Racing.com. "So if we keep her to fewer than four races, she turns four as a Group Two-winning mare that's had eight or nine starts, that'll be ideal for her.”

Winning Rupert Future UncertainExciting three-year-old sprinter Winning Rupert (Written Tycoon) could be retired to stud and not race again if connections accept a lucrative offer to sell the colt. Trained by Bjorn Baker, Winning Rupert won his first five starts including the Vo Rogue Plate (Gr 3, 1300m) at Eagle Farm on 31 December before finishing fourth in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) on 14 January. "From a training point of view, if he is retired it would be gutting as he is the fastest horse I've ever trained and I truly believe he could have gone to the next level in the spring," Baker said. "But we'll just see what comes with it." Following his defeat at the Gold Coast, Winning Rupert underwent surgery to remove bone chips from a knee last week.

Bachman DiesGroup Three winner Bachman (All American) died early yesterday after being bitten by a snake while spelling, owner Jadeskye Racing’s Damion Flower announced. The five-year-old gelding, who won four races from 25 starts and earned $436,410 in prize money, was a talented horse whose biggest success came as a two-year-old when winning the Baillieu Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Rosehill. He last raced at the Gold Coast on 14 January when finishing well back in the Magic Millions Cup (RL, 1400m). "He was taken to hospital and they did all the tests which showed he had been bitten by a black snake," trainer Gerald Ryan said. "He was such a quiet horse and was everyone's favourite."

Chetwood Works At Moonee ValleyLightly raced John O’Shea-trained four-year-old Chetwood (Exceed And Excel), a winner of five of his seven starts, rounded out his Australia Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) preparation with a strong gallop at Moonee Valley on Monday. The gelding galloped over 1000 metres in 1:07.68 and his last 400 metres in 25.42 seconds, ahead of the Group Two race on Friday. Chetwood, who won the Cameron Handicap (Gr 3, 1350m) and Weekend Hussler Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at the end of his last campaign, galloped solo on Monday. His three-year-old stablemate Peacock (Lonhro) also galloped at Moonee Valley over 1000 metres in a time of 1:08.21 and his last 400 metres in 24.97 seconds.

Gauci To RetireChampion jockey Darren Gauci has announced his retirement but will still play a part in the industry as a mentor to young riders. The 51-year-old will take up a position with Racing Victoria as an apprentice jockey coach early next month. Gauci's career spanned more than three decades and included four Victorian premierships, three as an apprentice, and 35 Group One victories. "Long-term it's something that I've always wanted to do and now I've got the job I'm looking forward to working with the team," Gauci told Racing.com. "I will miss riding but I've been training for this job for 37 years.”

Georgina Cartwright Loses Careless Riding AppealVictorian apprentice Georgina Cartwright has had her appeal against the severity of a careless riding suspension dismissed. Cartwright, who was suspended for 14 meetings at Sandown on 18 January for her ride on Ajuda (Astronomer Royal), had her appeal rejected yesterday by the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board. After stewards deemed the interference was in the high risk range, the ban was kept in place. Cartwright, who did not apply for a stay of proceedings, will be free to ride at midnight on 1 February.

Vale Noel LeckieScone Race Club chairman Noel Leckie has died suddenly aged 64. Leckie was a prime mover behind Scone's successful annual carnival with the the second day of the May fixture in the Hunter Valley holding metropolitan status. "Noel was one of the most conscientious and professional racing administrators I've had the pleasure of dealing with," Racing NSW chief executive Peter V'landys said. Leckie raced in partnership consistent Group One-placed sprinter Voodoo Lad (I Am Invincible), who is trained by Darren Weir after beginning his career with Scone trainer Rod Northam. He also bred recent Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) winner Houtzen (I Am Invincible). Leckie is survived by wife Julie and children, Campbell and Skye.

Races Delayed At KemblaHeavy rain yesterday caused the delay of the running of race five at Kembla Grange yesterday.

The storm caused the track to be downgraded to a Soft 6, but the remaining three races were run without issue.

Impavido Impresses On DebutBjorn Baker-trained three-year-old Impavido (High Chaparral) has made an immediate impression, winning by three and a quarter lengths on debut at Kembla Grange in a 1400 metre maiden yesterday. By High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells) out Zabeel (Sir Tristram) mare Assertion, the gelding is bred on the same cross as multiple Group One-winning stallion Dundeel (High Chaparral). A $120,000 purchase at the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale by Baker and Blandford Bloodstock, Impavido had been unplaced in two recent barrier trials at Wyong and Warwick Farm prior to his debut.

Fastnet Latina Wins On Aus DebutUS-performed European-bred four-year-old entire Fastnet Latina (Fastnet Rock) made a strong start to his Australian career at Terang yesterday, winning by two and three quarter lengths in a 1200 metre maiden. Owned by OTI Management and trained by Archie Alexander, Fastnet Latina had raced three times at Gulfstream Park last year for one placing, a third over 1500 metres when trained by Christophe Clement. After having late support in the betting, Fastnet Latina come from a midfield position under jockey Jordan Childs for an impressive first up victory.

No Cobalt Charges Against HarrisMornington trainer Kane Harris will not have to answer cobalt charges but has been interviewed by Racing Victoria stewards over public comments he made regarding a potential case against him Pre-race blood samples taken from two of the trainer's horses last month showed cobalt levels above the threshold of 100mcg per litre of urine but testing on the reserve portions came in under the level allowing for the measure of uncertainty, forcing RV to drop the case. Earlier this month, Harris told Racing.com he ran a clean stable but is facing an inquiry for his public comments.

Heroic Valour Works WellThe future direction of Group One-winning colt Heroic Valour (Fastnet Rock) will be determined after the three-year-old runs in the Karaka 3YO Mile (Listed, 1600m) at Ellerslie on Sunday. The Te Akau Racing-owned colt, who won the Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) as a two-year-old, finished second first up over 1500 metres against his own age on 14 January at Ellerslie. "He worked extremely well this (Tuesday) morning and we're pretty confident he will run very well," Te Akau Racing’s David Ellis said. "We'll decide after Sunday whether he presses on to the Derby or if we keep him to the shorter races, possibly in Melbourne."

Shadow Fox First Group One Runner For GulliverStratford trainer Steve Gulliver will have his first Group One runner when six-year-old gelding Shadow Fox (Keeninsky) runs in the Thorndon Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Trentham on Saturday. Shadow Fox is a last start winner at Trentham on 7 January over 1400 metres when victorious by four and a half lengths in an open handicap. “He’s a very good galloper and he always tries hard. He's just needed time more than anything, although he had a lung infection last year which cost us a couple of races,” Gulliver said.

Ellerslie Likely For MonrecourThe Roger James-trained Monrecour (Zacinto) is likely to head to Ellerslie on Sunday as opposed to running in the NZB Insurance Pearl Series Race (1200m) at Avondale today. The three-year-old filly won her debut over 1300 metres at Tauranga on 2 January and scored a half-length win in a Te Aroha barrier trial 1000 metres last month. “I’ve nominated her for the special conditions 1400 and that’s where she’ll go if she gets in,” James said. “She surprised me in her trial because she hadn’t showed anything out of the ordinary, but her trial was the quickest of the day including Xtravagant,” he said.

Travel Issues For AmeridonThe Liam Birchley-trained Ameridon (All American) has been held up in Australia and will now not arrive in Auckland in time to take part

in a gallop on the course proper at Ellerslie this morning ahead of Saturday’s Karaka Million (RL, 1200m). “The plane transporting the Liam Birchley-trained Ameridon has been delayed,” the Auckland Racing Club’s racing manager Craig Baker told www.theinformant.co.nz. “Instead of galloping in the morning, the horse will be galloping late afternoon tomorrow.” Ameridon has raced twice, finishing fourth on debut last month before winning a Tamworth maiden over 1000 metres on 6 January. .

Able Friend Pleases Moore Able Friend (Shamardal) pleased trainer John Moore in a workout at Sha Tin yesterday ahead of a tilt at Monday’s Stewards’ Cup (Gr 1, 1600m) at Sha Tin. “I’m very pleased with how he worked this morning,” jockey Joao Moreira said after the Australian-bred galloped 1200 metres in 1:21.7 (29.6, 28.9, 23.2) alongside a lead horse. Able Friend has not raced since finishing sixth in last month’s Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) but Moore believes that the horse is the fittest he has been this preparation. “Able Friend went with the lead horse and Moreira was very happy with what the horse did, he said it’s the fittest we’ve had him this time in,” said Moore.

Lucky Bubbles On TargetTrainer Francis Lui is happy with last month’s Hong Kong Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) runner up Lucky Bubbles (Sebring) ahead of Monday’s Centenary Sprint Cup (Gr 2, 1200m). He looks good for this race,” the Lui said. “If he runs to his best, he should be winning, and Brett (Prebble) thinks he is near his best. But they are always tough races to win. If he doesn’t win, hopefully he can come back later in the season and win again.”

Isaac Seeks Three StraightAustralian-bred Isaac (Hinchinbrook) is shooting for his third straight victory when he contests the Connaught Handicap (Class 3) (1200m) at Happy Valley on Wednesday. “His progression has been really something, he’s been a surprise packet!” trainer John Moore said. “When he arrived, he looked like a youngster that just needed time to fill into himself. He just didn’t strike me as impressive, he wasn’t impressive in any way, he looked so plain and I didn’t know what we had to work

with. But in the last few months, the way he’s physically improved and what he’s doing in his races, he’s now one of the more exciting, progressive horses in the stable.” Click here to view the fields for Happy Valley on Wednesday.

Debt Collector Trials2016 Singapore Horses Of The Year Debt Collector (Thorn Park) was beaten 27 lengths at his first barrier trial for the new season on Tuesday. In what has become expected of the seven-time winner Debt Collector virtually took no part in the trial settling down tailed out last, before showing even less in the home straight. “That’s the way he is. He was again unimpressive in his trial, he shows nothing, but in his races, he just blows them away,” said regular rider Michael Rodd. Debt Collector will barrier trial again on 2 February ahead of returning to racing on 10 February. Click here to view the barrier trial replay.

California Chrome Draws Wide In PegasusCalifornia Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) has drawn the outside barrier in the 12 horse field for Saturday’s US$12,000,000 Pegasus World Cup (2000m) at Gulfstream Park. California Chrome, the 6-5 favourite, will be having his last run before taking up stud duties at Taylor Made Stallions for a fee of US$40,000. Arrogate (Unbridled’s Song), the second favourite, has drawn gate one in his attempt to back up his Breeders’ Cup Classic (Gr 1, 10f) victory over California Chrome. Click here to view the field.

Legal Eagle To Be Ridden Back In MetLegal Eagle (Greys Inn) may be ridden further back in the field in the Sun Met (Gr 1, 2000m) at Kenilworth on Saturday. A close second in the Met last year, Legal Eagle has recently been ridden close to the pace in his races including in his Queen’s Plate (Gr 1, 1600m) earlier this month. “He has shown in his last two races that he could do with some cover and I would be happy for him to follow the better drawn horses. He is versatile and has a great turn of foot. I also think he is better over Saturday’s ten furlongs than he is over a mile,” said racing manager Derek Brugman to goldencircle.co.za.

Lindsay Park will launch the first of a string of Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) contenders at Caulfield tomorrow when two of the stable’s

juveniles contest the first of the lead up races to the $1,500,000 feature on 25 February.

Debutant Stakes (Listed, 1000m) winner Wait For No One (Lonhro) will resume in the Blue Diamond Preview (C&G) (Listed, 1000m) and debut-winning filly Tulip (Pierro) will run in the Blue Diamond Preview (F) (Gr 3, 1000m) for the David Hayes, Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig stable.

Wait For No One, who led all the way at Caulfield on debut on 8 October, has not raced since finishing third in the Maribyrnong Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) at Flemington on 5 November, a race won by Aspect (Pluck).

Among the colt’s rivals in the Blue Diamond Preview (C&G), which received ten acceptances yesterday, are the Tony McEvoy-trained Inglis Banner (RL, 1000m) winner Azazel (Snitzel), the Robert Smerdon-trained Property (Starcraft), who was runner up to Catchy (Fastnet Rock) on debut, and seven first starters.

A homebred for Peter Devitt, Wait For No One, who will be partnered by Regan Bayliss, is a natural two-year-old, according to co-trainer David Hayes.

“He’s a good fast two-year-old who I have a nice opinion of and he is going well,” Hayes told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.

“He’s jumped out well at Flemington (last

Friday) and I think you’ll find he’s the fastest early of our two-year-olds and we’ll find out if he’s the strongest.

“He’s a good old fashioned two-year-old and he’s by Lonhro so I think he’ll get 1200 metres.”

Juvenile filly Tulip, the first winner for her sire Pierro (Lonhro), was a NZ$400,000 purchase at the New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale last year by Lindsay Park and BBA Ireland, and is one of 12 runners entered for the Blue Diamond Preview (F) tomorrow.

She will take on last start Darren Weir-trained winner Limestone (Helmet), the McEvoy-trained Miss Wahoo (Master Of Design), Debutant Stakes runner up Spoils (Snitzel) and six first starters.

Hayes said that Tulip is a promising filly who is also on trial for the Blue Diamond Stakes next month.

Tulip made her debut at Moonee Valley on 31 December when coming from last at the 400 metre mark in a 1000 metre race to win by one and three quarter lengths.

“She’s a lovely filly who will only get better as the distances get longer,” he said.

The Hayes-Dabernig training partnership, has the top three in early betting for the Blue Diamond Stakes, headed by two-year-old fillies Tulip, Catchy and Formality (Fastnet Rock).

Formality, a $120,000 Inglis Australia Easter Yearling Sale purchase, won impressively on

debut at Werribee on 5 January by four and a quarter lengths, while Catchy made it two win from two starts when successful by two and a quarter lengths at Caulfield on 7 January.

Catchy was a $220,000 purchase by Dorrington Farm from the Coolmore Stud draft at last year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, while her sister was bought by Alan Bell Racing for $700,000 at the recent Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Hayes said Catchy would have her next start in the Blue Diamond Prelude (F) (Gr 2, 1100m) at Caulfield on 11 February and Will’s Bid, a two-year-old colt by Fastnet Rock (Danehill) who won on debut at Geelong on 26 December, will run in the Blue Diamond Prelude (C&G) (Gr 3, 1100m) on the same day.

Formality, however, will run in the Chairman’s Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) at Caulfield on 4 February as she also targets the Blue Diamond Stakes.

"At this stage they're all heading towards the Blue Diamond but it could change," Hayes said.

"Depending on what happens we may swing a couple of them up to Sydney."

Another exciting two-year-old from the Hayes-Dabernig team is Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) placed filly Madeenaty (Exceed And Excel).

A winner of the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (Listed, 1000m) on debut at Flemington 2 October, Madeenaty won the Wyong Magic Millions 2YO before finishing third behind Houtzen (I Am Invincible) and talented Gerald Ryan-trained colt Chauffeur (Snitzel).

“She’s going to be set for Sydney but will probably have a run up the straight at Flemington first,” he said.

Meanwhile, Lindsay Park has Grande Rosso (Written Tycoon) in tomorrow’s John Dillon Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Caulfield.

The five-year-old gelding has won three of his past five starts including the Chester Manifold Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Flemington on 14 January.

He has been ridden by Bayliss at his past two starts and the jockey who finished his apprenticeship earlier this month retains the ride.

“He is in great form and will go forward (from barrier nine),” Hayes said yesterday.

money winners in 2015-2016, made more than $300,000 but the kiwis can still well claim to be the most regular, recent source of Classic winners and perhaps, even still, a Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner.

Those damn stats again. NZ horses have won seven of the past eight Group One Rosehill Guineas’ (Gr 1, 2000m); won eight of the past ten Group One Derbies; won seven of the last eleven Victoria Derbies (Gr 1, 2500m) and NZ fillies have won five of the past seven Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) and the last three Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m).

Of more interest to me, as an old fogey and a traditionalist, is the Melbourne Cup.

New Zealand-bred horses won 33 of the 55 Cups contested between 1947 and 2001. There’s been only two since - Efficient (Zabeel) and Prince Of Penzance (Pentire) but four others have finished top three since 2010 - So You Think (High Chaparral), Maluckyday (Zabeel), Who Shot Thebarman (Yamanin Vital) and Criterion (Sebring) and, in that time, there’s been no other suffix bar European.

I remain convinced we can breed Cup winners in Australian and certainly in New Zealand. It’s just a matter of will - the will to be patient.

Perhaps there’s another one there from Trelawney Stud which boasts seven Melbourne Cup winners - Hiraji (Nizami) (1947), Foxzami (Nizami) (1949), Macdougal (Marco Polo) (1959), Hi Jinx (Pride Of Kildare) (1960), Polo Prince (Marco Polo) (1964), Galilee (Alcimedes) (1966) and Silver Knight (Alcimedes) (1971)….or elsewhere.

We all love that bit of friendly rivalry between the Aussies and the Kiwis. We might pretend we don’t like each

other but it’s funny how we’re almost instantly drawn together when standing in a bar in some other corner of the globe.

You have to love the irony that, on Australia day - tomorrow - the vast majority of Australia’s key racing fraternity will be in New Zealand inspecting yearlings. And it’s likely, a good percentage of those at home will be putting some New Zealand lamb on the barbie. Doh!

We, Australians that is, don’t mind George Simon interrupting a race call to take the ‘piss’ out of the Wallabies.

George, that’s because if you divide the number of people living in New Zealand, Queensland and New South Wales into the number of people on the planet you’ll realise that less than a quarter of one per cent of the world’s population would give a toss about the Bledisloe Cup (is that what it’s called?). Ah, statistics.

Of course, I’m not sure we’ve entirely hit the mark either in having a ‘dig’ at the kiwis. You’ll have seen, I’m sure, the Arrowfield Stud videos with the ‘talking’ stallions. If not, google them, as otherwise you’ll think I’m stark raving mad as you read on.

Very cleverly written, well delivered, good

PR. But I’m not sure it quite works to have Snitzel taunt Dundeel (High Chaparral) with ‘kiwis…shameless self promoters’ given that the Australian stud is promoting their resident New Zealand-bred stallion. But it’s funny.

To that end, the kiwis just might have something to brag about and have touched a nerve. To wit, four of the past five Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) winners including the aforementioned Dundeel. The other - Reliable Man (Dalakhani) stands at stud in New Zealand.

And we, Australians that is, are likely to pop over and spend $30 odd million - or more - as we did last year. Cos we love you, I think. The relationship, like it or not, is symbiotic.

Last season in Australia, New Zealand thoroughbreds won 25 per cent of the Group One races, from just 5.4 per cent of the racehorse population. Mind you, we might have won a few in New Zealand had Winx (Street Cry) and co campaigned there.

Karaka graduates won 23 Group One races last season and won the most Group One races at The Championships of any sales company. Ah, statistics. Still those couple aren’t bad from an NZ perspective.

There’s obvious quality of pedigree and performance at the top end of this year’s sale and recent history suggests there’s considerable opportunity, as well, to buy a good horse for something less than the median house price in the Sydney beachside suburbs.

Thirteen of the 15 Group One winners, last season, who’d graduated from NZB Sales sold for no more than the average plus 25 per cent. In that price range, was every one of the top nine performing graduates from Karaka last year and all but two of the top 20 graduates from 2015.

Similarly, it must be noted, not one of the top 15 publicly sold top 20 Australian bred prize

Darren GauciGauci has announced his impending

retirement to join Matt Pumpa as an apprentice jockey coach with Racing Victoria.

The affable jockey is the closest thing to a racing ‘rock star’ I’ve seen in my time covering the sport. It’s easy to forget just how ’big’ he was during his time as an apprentice.

He rode his first Group One winner - Taj Eclipse (Taj Rossi) in the 1983 VRC Oaks - as a 17 year-old. He won three metropolitan jockey’s premierships as an apprentice, from the 1982-83

season, and was appointed number one rider for the powerful Colin Hayes stable when just 19.

In January 1984, the legendary trainer Tommy Smith was quoted, in various newspapers, describing Gauci as ‘probably the equal of George Moore.’

Flemington trainer Ray Lawson, on the same day, said: "Both Darren and Geoff Lane could do things all the time that other jockeys rarely do," Lawson said. Gauci’s four apprentice’s premierships was only bettered by Lane’s five in the 1950’s.

@anz_news anzbloodstocknews.com| 12 |

S T E V E M O R A N

However, for all that, my most vivid memory is Gauci’s amazing run of riding at least one winner at 18 consecutive city meetings in 1983 which dominated the media.

Gauci's winning run began on March 26 when he rode smart filly Pleach to victory at Flemington. At the next 17 straight meetings in Melbourne, he rode 27 winners and moved into second place on the Victorian jockey's premiership (which he went on to win). When the run came to an end, it led most news bulletins.

Australian-bred Rapper Dragon (Street Boss) has emerged as a new star following his impressive success in last Sunday’s Hong

Kong Classic Mile (Listed, 1600m) at Sha Tin.Champion jockey Joao Moreira piloted the

four-year-old gelding to a two length win over Seasons Bloom (Captain Sonador) with the winner’s stablemate Beauty Generation (Road To Rock) another three quarters of a length back in third place.Time was a quick 1:34.98, the last 400 metres covered in 22.03 seconds.

This was Rapper Dragon’s fifth and most important victory since arriving in Hong Kong in 2015, his best previous win coming in the Lion Rock Trophy (HK Gr 3, 1600m) last May. The gelding is now likely to contest next month’s Hong Kong Classic Cup (Listed, 1800m) as a lead in to the highly prized Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m) in March.

Rapper Dragon also won as a two-year-old at Wyong in New South Wales under the name of Street Rapper when trained by Gai Waterhouse but it was his two stakes placings in Sydney, especially his second to Pasadena Girl (Savabeel) in the 2015 Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), which attracted the interest of Hong Kong buyers.

A product of Eduardo Cojuangco’s Gooree Park Stud which raced the horse in Australia, Rapper Dragon is the third foal of unraced homebred mare Swing Dance (Danehill Dancer) whose first two foals Swing Vote (Northern Meteor) and Swing Sensation (Northern Meteor) were both winners with Swing Vote stakes placed in the Blue Diamond Preview (Fillies) (Listed,1000m).

Swing Dance’s now two-year-old filly by Your Song (Fastnet Rock) fetched $150,000 as a yearling in 2016 with the mare being sold in 2015 to Michael Wallace Bloodstock while her Congrats (A P Indy) yearling colt for $110,000 at the recent Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. Following him is a 2016 colt by Deep Field (Northern Meteor). Swing Dance is believed in

foal again to Street Boss (Street Cry) to produce in 2017 what would be a full relation to Rapper Dragon.

No breeder active in Australia has a better appreciation of American bloodlines than Eduardo Cojuangco and his purchases over many years of mares from some of the most celebrated families in United States breeding have led to him producing a number of outstanding racehorses, among them the grand warrior Desert War (Desert King), ill-fated sire sensation Northern Meteor (Encosta De Lago), Laser Hawk (Artie Schiller), Swift Alliance (Don Eduardo), Smart Missile (Fastnet Rock) and Dreamscape (Choisir).

In the case of Rapper Dragon, the initial mare import was of his third dam Stormy Dream (Storm Cat) who produced five winners but none of great consequence, however, a mating with champion sire Marscay (Biscay) produced the placegetter Newscaster whose three foals to race all became stakes winners.

One of these was Swing Dance’s brother Turf Express (Danehill Dancer) whose 15 wins included a Listed race in Melbourne and other races in France and Hong Kong during an international career. Another was Sports Edition (Northern Meteor), also a Listed winner, but her best foal was Sports Edition’s sister Amanpour (Northern Meteor) whose four wins were highlighted by her victory in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes (Gr 1, 1500m).

Storm Dream’s greatest appeal to Eduardo Cojuangco was probably not her great speed sire Storm Cat (Storm Bird) but her female line tracing to Northern Dancer’s (Nearctic) dam Natalma (Native Dancer), Rapper Dragon’s sixth dam, whose daughter Born A Lady (Tentam), fifth dam of the new Hong Kong star, is a half-sister to the more famous Spring Adieu (Buckpasser), second dam of the great sire Danehill (Danzig).

Northern Dancer established the dominant male line in international breeding in the latter part of the 20th century and it has continued just as strongly into the 21st century with the amazing Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) and others in Europe plus in Australia current leading stallions I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), Not a Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice), Redoute’s Choice (Danehill), Fastnet Rock (Danehill) and Exceed And Excel (Danehill) all members of his tribe.

Natalma’s dam Almahmoud (Mahmoud) also earned a place in equine history as the mother of top class American race filly Cosmah (Cosmic Bomb) who became the dam of outstanding performer Halo (Hail To Reason), twice champion sire in the United States whose major winners include perennial champion Japanese sire Sunday Silence, Devil’s Bag and More Than Ready’s sire Southern Halo whose dam Northern Sea is by Northern Dancer making him linebred 3 x 4 to Almahmoud.

An earlier source of excellence in this remarkable family is Mother Goose (Chickle), ninth dam of Rapper Dragon, who was among the best juvenile fillies in the United States in 1924.

Rapper Dragon is one of 26 stakes winners worldwide for his rather undervalued sire Street Boss (Street Cry) who stands at Darley’s Jonabell Farm in Kentucky and shuttles to Northwood Park in Victoria where his 2016 fee was $27,500 (inc GST).

A multiple Grade One sprint stakes winner in the United States, Street Boss has a number of talented black type winners in Australia headed by The Quarterback (Gr 1 VRC Newmarket Handicap, 1200m), Petits Filous, Thiamandi, Scarlet Billows and Tris.

Paradis Imperial Shows Plenty Of Spirit … Again

If you’re into Cognac, we’re reliably informed that Hennessy’s Paradis Imperial is a smooth drop.

There’s nothing too rough either with the four legged, Paradis Imperial, who maintained her unbeaten record with a commanding victory in the Ann Nugent @R&W Wilston/Windsor QTIS 2YO Handicap (1000m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday: her first trip to the big smoke.

Trained at Rockhampton by Tony McMahon, Paradis Imperial won at her home track on debut on 4 November, before peeling off victories at Mackay, Rockie (again) and Mackay (again), setting in motion the excursion to Brisbane.

“Five from five is very impressive regardless of whatever track a horse is racing at,” Gainsborough Lodge’s Stud Manager, Christine Frohloff points out. “That was a very strong win by the filly.

“She was a nice foal and actually the very first foal by Sun Stud’s Exceed And Excel stallion, Instinction. She looked an early type and it’s no great surprise she’s doing so well this early on.

“We took her down to the Gold Coast QTIS sale in March last year and my daughter, Chantal, told Tony (McMahon) that the yearling had “plenty of ticker” and he “should do himself a favour and take her home”.

Amazingly for a correct yearling with clean x-rays and a good pedigree, Paradis Imperial sold for just $9,000 and, as of Saturday afternoon, has banked $180,650 for owners.

McMahon recalls Chantal’s ‘persistence’ well …

“She (Chantal) did come up to me at the sale and told me if I bought the filly I wouldn’t be sorry: turns out she was spot on,” McMahon recalls. “I love that sale - I’ve been bringing down tour groups from regional Queensland for the sale for over 20 years as it’s always such great value.

“I still can’t believe I got her so cheaply.

Stunned. I love the progeny of first season sires and given that Paradis Imperial’s half brother (by Bradbury’s Luck) made $72,500 the year before, I thought we’d end up having to pay a lot more than $9,000.

“This filly had ability from day one. I think her greatest attribute is her constitution … it was an eight hour float trip back to Rockhampton on

Saturday night and the first thing she did was stick her head in the feed bin when she got back home.

“I’ll give her a week off and see what happens from there but she’s a very exciting filly.”

Now 64 years old and with just five in work (“for my wife’s friends and friends of friends”), McMahon has had a long association with the industry both in media and administration.

McMahon started calling races at 16 and was a handicapper with the Gold Coast Turf Club at 19 before spending a good deal of his career as a racing journalist in NSW.

Eventually taking out a trainers’ licence in the mid 80s and shifting

to Rockhampton, he subsequently became the local racecaller, the local racing journalist and also did a bit of work on local TV.

McMahon pretty much focusses on taking care of his small stable these days and if Paradis Imperial continues her upward trajectory, this time around he’ll be providing the headlines instead of writing them.

HOOFNOTE: One of Queensland’s most famous stud farms, Gainsborough Lodge is based in the Darling Downs and is owned Melinda Richards, whose father Col, purchased the property in 1991. Gainsborough was founded in the early 1970s by real estate king, Alfred Grant.

Frohloff manages Gainsborough Lodge on Richards’ behalf and is busily preparing yearlings for sales in Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coast: “We have lots of horses this year, which works in well as we’re getting a lot of winners of late … right up and down the east coast and in Hong Kong too”.

Gainsborough will sell a half sister - by Top Echelon - to Paradis Imperial at the Gold Coast Magic Millions March Yearling Sale and, it’s probably safe to assume, she will be viewed widely once arriving on the complex.

“Paradis Imperial’s dam, Hennessy Beau, also has a Bradbury’s Luck colt she produced last spring and is now in foal to (another Exceed And Excel stallion in) Outreach.”

Analysis: A taking debut victory by Impavido, who came from second last in the run and widest on the home turn, and exhibited a good turn of foot picking up the leaders inside the final 100 metres, before drawing right away to score with his ears pricked. A step up in trip and class look likely for this talented son of High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells).
