Atlantic Jewel’s orphan foal an ‘outstanding colt’Six weeks on from the devastating death

of champion mare Atlantic Jewel (Fastnet

Rock), who made her name on Australian

racetracks and was building a reputation

as a high-class broodmare, her sixth and

last foal, by unbeaten US Triple Crown

winner Justify (Scat Daddy), is a picture of

health. “It was a very sad day for everyone

at Coolmore when we lost the great mare

Atlantic Jewel while foaling,” Coolmore stud

manager John Kennedy said yesterday. “We

were fortunate enough to save her Justify

to easily attend auctions in Australia and

New Zealand but stakeholders warn the floated plans are not over the line.

Such a move between the two governments would, in particular, provide

a significant boost to the prospects of a relatively healthy New Zealand

Bloodstock Karaka Yearling Sale next January.

For months, NZB had debated whether to delay its national sale to

April next year in the hope of more favourable economic conditions and

a loosening of travel restrictions relating to the Covid-19 pandemic but in

the end chose to maintain its traditional slot following the Magic Millions

offering on the Gold Coast.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and New Zealand

counterpart Jacinda Ardern, who is facing an election on October 17, have

this week pledged support towards an outcome that would allow travel

between the two countries.

New Zealand’s foreign affairs minister Winston Peters, who also acts

as racing minister, has also publicly backed calls for the bubble to be

implemented which would also facilitate buyers being able to attend the

respective Inglis sales in Sydney and Melbourne next year.

Andrew Seabrook, NZB’s managing director, yesterday welcomed the

speculation but stopped short of suggesting Australian participants will

definitely be on the ground at Karaka next year.

“That would be fantastic for Karaka if they were, but I am not as confident

as what they are saying on TV,” Seabrook told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.

“It’s not just the horse industry (who wants the borders open), but

every industry. Tourism is our biggest industry in New Zealand and you

would hardly find a person who isn’t desperate for the borders to be open

and it’s great to have Winston, as the racing minister, speaking on the

subject of getting the borders open.

“I’m cautiously optimistic, so fingers crossed we do get a bubble in

place, but we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves just yet.”

Ardern and Morrison discussed the travel bubble issue on Tuesday

night and the New Zealand Prime Minister yesterday suggested the ability

to trace and prevent travellers located in Australian Covid-19 hotspots

remains as a sticking point on the trans-Tasman bubble proposal.

"Essentially what a hotspot system would do, it would shut down

those areas where there were heightened cases, while allowing the rest to

be open. And so absolutely, we can also make that work," Ardern told AAP.

"What we just need to hear a bit more from Australia on is what the

definition of a hotspot will be, how they'll manage the state borders in

those situations, but we're working that through."

Ardern suggested that even if concerns over hotspots could not be

resolved, New Zealanders may be allowed to travel to Australia in the very

near future.

"There is a chance that we could have Australia simply open to New

Zealand because of our status and where we are right now, which is pretty

good," Ardern told AAP.

"They could just say, 'Well, look one-way (travel from New Zealand to

Australia) is fine by us' until we work through some of the detail, and it's a

possibility."

Seabrook yesterday maintained NZB’s position that the auction house

had made the right call by keeping the national sale in January.

“If they come out now and say, ‘look, the border’s going to open in

April’ we still believe January is the time to go, rather than going after 3000

yearlings have been through in Australia and $300-odd million already

being spent,” he said.

“It would be a very nice bonus if the borders did open come January …

because the Australians I have spoken to say they are keen to come to the

sale. It would be massive if it did happen.”

There is no suggestion, however, that a travel bubble will be in place in

time for the upcoming Inglis Ready2Race Sale or the Magic Millions Gold

Coast 2YOs in Training Sale, nor the NZB Ready to Run Sale on November

18 and 19.

“Auckland will be going to Level 1 (Covid-19 restrictions) shortly, I’m

sure, as long as everything stays the same and it will still be a physical sale

with all the Kiwis live on site, of course, and people from around the world

will be bidding via online,” Seabrook said.

“The great thing about the Australians, most of them have got good

relationships with people over here who they can rely on to look at horses

and do the necessary groundwork for them.

“That statistic of 20 Group 1 wins in the last five years coming from

ready to run sales in Australasia, 19 of them are from Karaka, should make

buyers realise that it is head and shoulders the best two-year-old sale in

the southern hemisphere on performance.”

Meanwhile, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian also weighed in on the

trans-Tasman travel bubble yesterday, saying she would endorse any plan

that would allow New Zealanders to travel to the state.

"NSW is saying to every part of Australia, except for Victoria, and

understandably, to WA, to Queensland, South Australia, 'you are welcome

to NSW',” Berejiklian told Channel Nine.

"We believe our system is resilient enough. If we are saying that to

other states and New Zealand is about the same situation, I think it is

important for us to consider those opportunities. I would also hope that

it's reciprocal."

MiRunners pick up Eduardo for EverestMiRunners have picked up the Joe Pride-

trained Eduardo (Host) for The Everest (Gr

1, 1200m) on October 17. The group had

previously booked in Rothfire to run in the

$15 million sprint, but he was ruled out of the

race after pulling up lame following the Golden

Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) on Saturday. The dual

Group 2-winning seven-year-old was last seen

finishing runner-up in The Shorts (Gr 2, 1100m)

behind fellow Everest contender Classique

Legend (Not A Single Doubt) at Randwick last

month. Eduardo will be ridden by Rachel King

at Randwick.

Trekking in The EverestEduardo will line up alongside Godolphin

sprinter Trekking (Street Cry), who will

represent the slot held by prominent

owners and racing identities Max Whitby

and Neil Werrett. The dual Group 1 winner,

who was third in the 2019 edition after an

enterprising Tommy Berry ride and last

seen finishing runner-up to Pippie (Written

Tycoon) in the Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) on

Friday evening, joined his James Cummings-

trained stablemate Bivouac (Exceed And

Excel) in the line-up after he was locked in

for Godolphin's slot on Monday. "To have

two horses in a race like this is always going

to be a great thing," Cummings said. "But this

is a lot more than merely having two horses

in The Everest, this is a case of having two

horses in the race that we believe can win it."

Only two Everest places remain vacant with

Chris Waller Racing and James Harron yet to

announce their picks.

Champagne on ice for NettoyerIt is nothing new for a trainer to pop open

the bubbly if their horse wins a Group 1, but

Wendy Roche will do it with a twist if Nettoyer

(Sebring) lands the Epsom Handicap (Gr 1,

1600m) on Saturday. The seven-year-old mare

is almost as famous for her unconventional

diet of pizza and champagne as she is for her

racetrack exploits and Roche has promised a

memorable celebration if Nettoyer triumphs

at Randwick. "If she wins the Epsom, I will

guarantee everyone she will be drinking

champagne out of the trophy," Roche said.

Nettoyer will bid to become the first horse since

Racing To Win (Encosta De Lago) in 2006 to

claim Randwick's two major mile handicaps

in the same calendar year, after landing the

Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) in April. It would

appear a tall order after she finished 12th first-

up in the Chelmsford Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) last

month, but Roche believes she is just coming

into her own. "I would say she is only just

mature physically," Roche said. "Mentally, I

don't think she will ever be mature." All going

well, Nettoyer will head to Melbourne after for

the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m).

Prized draw for BrandenburgJohn Sargent is delighted with the Epsom

Handicap draw of Brandenburg (Burgundy),

after the dual Group 1 placegetter was given

barrier three for Saturday’s star-studded event.

Brandenburg, who won the Hobartville Stakes

(Gr 2, 1400m) last season, finished third in the

Bill Ritchie Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m) last time

out and Sargent is pleased with his condition

heading into the Group 1. “The three marble is

a big help, but a mile at Randwick everyone has

got a chance,” Sargent told Sky Sports Radio.

“Jason [Collett] galloped him on the course

proper at Randwick and he galloped very well.

He can position himself, from that draw, in the

first half a dozen. Hopefully he will get a bit of

room and hit the line strongly. I think the mile, as

he showed in the Doncaster, is a trip that he will

do nicely in and will hit the line strongly with his

breeding. He is peaking for this and hopefully he

runs well and then onto the Golden Eagle.”

Dry track to suit Hush Writer

Co-trainer Adrian Bott believes Hush Writer

(Rulership) will appreciate the anticipated dry

conditions ahead of the Metropolitan Handicap

(Gr 1, 2400m) this weekend after failing on rain-

affected ground when finishing eighth in the race

12 months ago. Hush Writer arrives at Randwick

on Saturday following his runner-up effort to the

reopposing Mugatoo (Henrythenavigator) in the

Newcastle Gold Cup (Gr 3, 2300m) last time out.

"Last year we just didn't get the conditions on

the day so the key is if we can get a dry track on

Saturday," Bott said. "He is just a very happy horse

at present. I thought he was going into the race last

year in excellent order but I feel this year we might

just have him open to that bit more improvement

out of the Newcastle Cup. He was only second-up

there in the Newcastle Cup so I thought it was a

very tough effort to lead from the outset.”

Enthaar set to live up to rapsCiaron Maher is expecting Enthaar (Written

Tycoon) to live up to the promise she showed

in the official two-year-old trials last month,

where she won by five lengths at Randwick

under James McDonald. Following her

impressive display, Enthaar has been installed

as the warm favourite for the Gimcrack Stakes

(Group 3, 1000m) on Saturday and Maher said

champion jockey McDonald was keen to align

himself with the filly. “I would say you’d need

a crowbar to get him off,’’ Maher, who trains in

partnership with David Eustace, told Racing

NSW. “We thought she was the one, we gave her

a little jump out in Melbourne and then when

she had a jump out at Warwick Farm she was

equally impressive again. So it was no surprise

what she did the other day. Her sectionals

were impressive and the way she did it was

impressive for me. She’s an exciting horse for

sure.”

Verry Elleegant heading to MelbourneChris Waller has confirmed Verry Elleegant

(Zed) will head to Melbourne for the Turnbull

Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Flemington. The

multiple Group 1 winner was a dual acceptor

in two states but will be scratched from

the Hill Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m) at Randwick.

Stablemate Finche (Frankel) was likewise

paid up for both races and will join Verry

Elleegant in the Victorian feature. Waller

has also determined Flemington as the

better option for Shared Ambition (Born

To Sea), who will be scratched from the

Metropolitan Handicap in preference for The

Bart Cummings (Gr 3, 2500m). In another

reshuffle, Kolding (Ocean Park) will head to

the Hill Stakes after drawing barrier 20 in the

Epsom Handicap. Giving an update on his

Saturday runners, Waller’s stable announced

on twitter: “We have had a good look at the

form for the races on Saturday and have

decided that Kolding will run in the Group

2 Hill Stakes. Verry Elleegant, Finche and

Shared Ambition will all travel to Melbourne

and run in the Turnbull Stakes and the Bart

Cummings respectively.”

Baby ready to spring Turnbull surprisePaul Preusker is excited to see his star stayer

Surprise Baby (Shocking) in the Turnbull Stakes

on Saturday, but identifies the Melbourne Cup

(Gr 1, 3200m) as his main target. "He's going

to be a good winning chance but for me, it's

all about having a spar to get him right for the

Melbourne Cup," Preusker said. "He worked

super on Tuesday. Not too taxing, just beautiful

and he's up for the fight on Saturday." Preusker

was pleased with Surprise Baby’s first-up second

to Humidor (Teofilo) in the Feehan Stakes (Gr 2,

1600m) at Moonee Valley on September 5, which

was the gelding’s first start since finishing fifth

in last year's Melbourne Cup, and the trainer is

willing to bypass the Cox Plate to give them a

better chance of winning in Melbourne this year.

"We've got to be sensible. I don't want to sacrifice

a Melbourne Cup by running in the Cox Plate,"

Preusker said. "He'll start on Saturday and then

we'll unwind and make the right decision as to

whether he has another run before it."

Steel Prince chasing cup berthStill Prince (Nathaniel) will be trying to win his way

into the Melbourne Cup when running in The Bart

Cummings this weekend, with the winner earning

a golden ticket into the two-mile showpiece. Last

year Steel Prince secured a start in the Melbourne

Cup by defeating Surprise Baby in the Andrew

Ramsden Stakes (Listed, 2800m) and, as Steel

Prince is number 38 in this year's Melbourne Cup

order of entry, co-trainer Sam Freedman says he

needs to win again to be assured of a spot, following

a close third behind Orderofthegarter (Galileo) in

the Naturalism Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) last time out.

"At his last start he blew out late which was his

second run in 12 months. He's taken a lot of benefit

from it," Freedman told RSN radio. "You know he

loves a scrap. Hopefully he can get another spot in

the Melbourne Cup."

Newitt booked for GlenfiddichCraig Newitt is delighted to secure the ride on the

Peter Moody-trained Glenfiddich (Fastnet Rock)

in the Cox Plate and believes the three-year-old

has a strong chance at Moonee Valley. Moody’s

long-time rider Luke Nolen rode the colt to

victory in the Stutt Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) on Friday

night and will be back on board for the Caulfield

Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m), but with Glenfiddich only

having to carry 49.5kg in the Cox Plate, Newitt got

the call up for the second time after partnering

the son of Fastnet Rock to a first-up third in the

Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) in August. “It was

great to lock it in and he’s definitely got a lot of

class, I would have been disappointed if they’d

gone with someone else down at that weight,”

Newitt told Racing.com. “I learnt a lot from

my ride on him in the Memsie and then also

Luke rode him perfectly the other night, that’s

obviously his pattern where he’s comfortable to

get out in front. I think he’s in with a really good

chance against them in the Cox Plate.”

Pierro to the fore at Randwick

Two of Pierro’s progressive three-year-olds made

their mark on the midweek meeting at Randwick

and earned themselves a shot at black-type

races in October. Darling Diamond, who is out

of 2014 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m)

winner Diamond Drille (Al Maher), scored

by two lengths in the Sky Racing Active Plate

(1400m) for trainer Mark Newnham. "She is a

lovely, well-bred filly who has kept improving

the whole prep,” Newnham said. “Her first ever

trial she showed a bit of talent straight away and

we put her in the paddock. I think she will keep

getting better so the autumn will be more her

time.” Newnham nominated the Reginald Allen

Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Randwick on October

17 as her target. Another of Pierro's progeny,

Private Cheetah, scored in the second race for

John and Gary Moore. "He's got a lot of ability

and I'm sure he's going to go on from today,"

Moore said. "We're probably going to look at the

Brian Crowley Stakes (Listed, 1200m) with him."

Redwood Shadow emerges a Derby chanceThe powerful Mick Price and Michael Kent

Junior stable may have another string to add

to their attack on the Victoria Derby (Gr 1,

2500m) with Ballarat winner Redwood Shadow

(Redwood). Redwood Shadow is one of eight

horses they have nominated for the Victoria

Derby and their Warrnambool stable foreman

Matthew Williams identified it as an option after

his easy win over 1600 metres on Wednesday.

"He looks like he's got a nice future. He's still

learning but he's a nice horse," Williams said.

"He's still in the Victoria Derby. It could come

up too quickly but it's an option."

$425,000 Golden Horn colt wins first start

Around The Horn (3 c ex Paper Round by Street

City) brought up a debut win for both horse

and stallion at Murray Bridge yesterday for

Tony and Calvin McEvoy. The Victoria-bred

Around The Horn, who cost $425,000 from the

2019 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling sales,

is the first Australian winner for Golden Horn,

who stood at Dalham Hall Stud, Newmarket for

£40,000 (Approx AUD$72,000) in 2020.

Farnan has exhibition gallopGai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott sent Farnan

(Not A Single Doubt) for an exhibition gallop at

Randwick yesterday, which was his first public

appearance following his fifth-placed finish in a

controversial Run To The Rose (Gr 2, 1200m) last

month. With Tim Clark on board, Farnan narrowly

edged out Dawn Passage (Dawn Approach) and

the jockey will reunite with the three-year-old colt

for The Everest on October 17.

Jamaican Rain sets broodmare record at Inglis Digital sale Dual Group 3-winning mare Jamaican Rain

(Manhattan Rain) has become the most

expensive mare sold through the broodmare

category on Inglis Digital topping the September

(Late) Online Sale at $280,000. It is also the fourth

highest lot in the platform’s history, following

race fillies Manaya (Hinchinbrook) ($400,000

July 2019) and Set Goals (Snitzel) ($321,000

June 2019), plus a 25 per cent share in Mustajeer

(Medicean) ($320,000). Offered unreserved by

Swettenham Stud (as agent), the three-time

stakes-winning mare was bought by Rosemont

Stud following an intense bidding duel. "These

quality race mares are very hard to buy in any

market, so to secure a mare of her quality at that

price, felt like good value,” said Rosemont Stud’s

Ryan McEvoy who signed under his Sandhurst

Bloodstock banner. “She was very dynamic at

her best and we’ve seen time and time again that

these talented sprinting mares have a superior

record as producers, so let’s hope that she is

lucky and we are reflecting on a job well done in

years to come.”

Bradley takes home Yes Yes Yes relationArlington Park Racing’s Brett Bradley, who

celebrated the success as a part-owner of

Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Ole

Kirk (Written Tycoon) at the weekend, bought

the second highest-priced lot yesterday, the

mare Janneke (Olympic Glory) for $140,000.

The four-year-old is out of Hell It’s Hot

(Zeditave), making her a half-sister to Group

1-winning sprinter In Her Time (Time Thief),

while her dam is a half-sister to Bradley’s mare

Sin Sin Sin (Fantastic Light) who, of course, is

the dam of Coolmore’s Everest-winning first

season sire Yes Yes Yes (Rubick). “The driving

force behind buying Janneke was that Yes Yes

Yes is in the family, I bred him and I want to

increase my exposure to that family,” Bradley

said. “I still have his dam Sin Sin Sin and I’m

breeding with her but when I saw this mare was

on Inglis Digital, I thought I would have a crack.

I received some good advice from Widden Stud

who are taking a share in the mare, she’s already

booked to be covered by Yes Yes Yes’ sire Rubick

this season to keep that theme going with the

family and I think he’s a stallion that will suit

her.”

Spendthrift donates Overshare nom to charitySpendthrift Australia, a leading thoroughbred

stud farm located in Kerrie Valley, have offered

to donate a nomination to stallion Overshare

(I Am Invincible) to the community-owned,

not-for-profit aged care facility, RM Begg

Kyneton Aged Care Inc. Garry Cuddy, general

manager at Spendthrift Australia, explained:

“Covid doesn’t discriminate and has meant

that the annual stallion parades have had to

go online. Traditional open days here at the

farm usually attract large numbers of visitors,

which translate into bookings for our stallions

for breeding services. This season will have

its challenges and we know that a lot of other

people are doing it tough, especially in the aged-

care sector. So, this is a way we can help make a

difference in our local community. At an $11,000

service fee, Overshare is an ideal alternative for

breeders whose budgets can’t quite stretch to

I Am Invincible’s $209,000 fee. The aim of our

fundraiser is to ‘share’ a nomination to Overshare

with RM Begg.” Bids to buy the donated stallion

nomination to Overshare for this stud season

can be made via Bloodstock Auctions: www.

VRC submits carnival crowd proposalThe Victoria Racing Club yesterday submitted a

proposal to the State Government for spectators

to be allowed to return for this year’s Melbourne

Cup Carnival. Due to Covid-19, spectators

have been banned from race meetings for the

majority of 2020, but the VRC hope to see racing

fans visit Flemington for the carnival, with the

feature race being held on November 3. Racing

minister Martin Parkula said the VRC proposal

is now under consideration. "Decisions on

attendance at major race days will be based

on public health advice, which has been our

consistent position," he told Racing.com. "We

will give all proposals proper consideration and

it's worth noting that interest in the carnival

to date from Victorians and racing people

interstate has been as strong as ever."

million commitment to the multimillion-

dollar redevelopment at Bundall, which would

deliver a full refurbishment of the racing

surfaces, along with lights, an in-field tunnel

and an all-weather synthetic track. Racing

Queensland chairman Steve Wilson AM said

today’s announcement was significant for the

Queensland racing industry. “The Gold Coast

tracks and lights project is at the heart of RQ’s

night racing strategy and is a gamechanger for

our industry,” he said. “We want the Gold Coast

to be our very own Happy Valley – showcasing

the city to the world by unlocking new and

exciting timeslots – whilst establishing itself

as the most impressive night racing venue in

Australia.”

McDonald suspendedChampion Sydney jockey James McDonald

received a three-day suspension for careless

riding at Wednesday’s meeting at Randwick.

The charge occured from McDonald’s ride in

the Benchmark 72 Handicap (1250m), with

stewards ruling the jockey allowed his mount

Xanthus (Better Than Ready) to shift out under

riding over the latter stages of the race, causing

Mission River (Redoute’s Choice), who finished

seventh, to lose it’s running and be checked.

The suspension was McDonald’s first in more

than 500 rides, which resulted in a deduction

from the penalty. The suspension starts after

Saturday’s Epsom Handicap meeting at

Randwick and McDonald returns to riding the

following Saturday for Spring Champion Stakes

day.

Ostini disqualified over fatal intravenous dripTrainer Mark Ostini has been disqualified after

pleading guilty to a charge of improper conduct

for authorising his stablehand, Mitchell

Faulkner, to administer an intravenous drip

at Armidale Racecourse on July 8, 2020 that

resulted in the fatality of racehorse Leshem

(Canford Cliffs). The trial was conducted

yesterday by Racing NSW Stewards and they

advised Ostini that his period of disqualification

will begin immediately and expires on

September 16, 2021. Faulkner has also been

disqualified for the same period of time.

Clegg handed 14-month banCraig Clegg has pleaded guilty to three charges

relating to his treatment of Precocious Girl

(Choisir) in July and has been disqualified until

September 23, 2021. Racing NSW Stewards

determined that Clegg failed to provide

necessary veterinary treatment to Precocious

Girl when she displayed clinical signs of choke

act and for acting dishonestly by fabricating

and providing treatment records for the days

preceding the euthanasia of Precocious Girl.

He also pleaded guilty for being in possession

of the unregistered medication B.E.L.L drops,

for which he was charged $200.

Scorse injured in Canberra barrier incidentJockey Patrick Scorse was dislodged after

coming out of the barriers in race seven at

Canberra yesterday. An update provided by

Racing NSW said: “He is conscious and is being

attended to by ambulance officers. Patrick is

experiencing some pain to his left ankle and

will be transported to Canberra Hospital.”

Vale John MocFormer Rosehill trainer John Moc, who also

became a dedicated clocker at the Sydney

racetrack for The Sportsman, has died. He was

69. Wyong trainer and former jockey Tracey

Bartley was John Moc's nephew: "He came

from a great era of trainers with the likes of

Jack Denham and company,” Bartley said. "He

pulled off a huge plunge on King Amura; I

think he was something like 33-1 into 2-1 and

bolted in. He was still clocking horses up until

18 months ago before he developed health

problems. At one stage John was clocking all

of Chris Waller's horses at Rosehill." Trainer

Stephen “Beaver” Schofield rode for Moc and

recalled several of his best horses. "I learned

a lot from John when I rode for him; we had

many winners," Schofield said. "He had a lot of

success with older horses that were passed on

to him. He didn't work his horses real hard and

that was the key. Some I can remember were

Papagano, Willy Willy and King Amura. John

was a real battler and loved going to the bush

with his horses and getting money.” Funeral

details are yet to be announced.

Vale Mick HoodFormer racehorse trainer Mick Hood has

died, aged 84. Mick, who began training

when retiring from the saddle aged 30, had a

long and distinguished career. Racing NSW

tweeted: “Former racehorse trainer Mick Hood

has passed away peacefully surrounded by

his family after a short illness, aged 84. Mick

will be sadly missed but never forgotten by

all who knew him. The family will be having a

private funeral at the request of his loving wife,

Carmen.”

Callsign Mav hoping to cause Windsor Park upset

Callsign Mav (Atlante), the surprise $81 winner

of the Tarzino Trophy (Gr 1, 1400m) a fortnight

ago, is out to prove that was no fluke when he

takes on the Windsor Park Plate (Gr 1, 1600m)

on his home track at Hastings on Saturday,

where he has four wins from six starts. However

his trainer, John Bary, feels the four-year-old

is being overlooked once again with quotes

of $31 on his step up to the mile. “I think he

is overlooked in the market,” Bary said. “He

showed last season he was up with the best of

them, he raced with the best of them and beat

some of the best of them. It showed two weeks

ago. He has improved, and I was very happy

with his gallop on Saturday over 1500 metres at

home.”

Americans have cause to celebrate with BoourbonaireA decision to invest in a handful of yearlings

at the New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka sale

last year is looking set to pay off for a group of

American owners. The Bourbon Lane Stable

LLC, led by American investor Dennis Foster,

will look forward to watching three of their

purchases compete in New Zealand this

weekend. Bourbonaire (Darci Brahma) will

be the partnership’s major focus this weekend

when he lines-up in the Dundeel At Arrowfield

Hawke’s Bay Guineas (Gr 2, 1400m) at Hastings

on Saturday. He finished sixth in the Northland

Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Te Rapa earlier

this month after winning on debut at Matamata

a fortnight prior. “He had his final gallop this

(Wednesday) morning and he’s going really

well,” trainer Stephen Marsh said. “I think the

1400 metres is ideal for him. On paper his last

race looked a bit disappointing, but he did run

the fastest last 600 metres of the race. He is a

lovely colt, I am just hoping the track isn’t too

firm for him. If everything is going perfect, he

will go from here to the Sarten and then onto

the Guineas.” The syndicate also has All Black

Bourbon (Highly Recommended) and Mega

Bourbon (El Roca) in the NZB Ready To Run

Breeze Ups 12-13 October 3YO (1200m) at Te

Rapa tomorrow.

Who Shot Thebarman’s dam diesEars Carol (Carolingian), the dam of

Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) placegetter

and fans’ favourite Who Shot Thebarman

(Yamanin Vital), has died. Ears Carol

produced seven winners from the same

number to race, being named South Island

Broodmare of the Year in 2016. Who Shot

Thebarman, who was third in the Flemington

showpiece in 2014 and fifth in 2016, became

a Group 1 winner when winning the Sydney

Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) in 2018, earning over $4.5

million in prize-money during his career.

Bred and owned by Brian and Lorraine

Anderton, Ears Carol dies as a twenty-year-

old, with her latest progeny to race, Ears The

Barman, winning as recently as August at

Sandown for trainer Phillip Stokes.

SIN: Watch out for Meagher’s pairAustralian trainer Daniel Meagher sends

out Watch Out Boss (Bullet Train) and Lim’s

Passion (Show A Heart) at Kranji on Saturday,

in the hope the consistent pair can deliver an

upturn in form with the trainer winless since

August 8 after a flying start. The five-year-

old duo have six wins between them, with

Watch Out Boss second on his last start over

1200 metres, and Lim’s Passion third over the

same distance. While they both step back to

1000 metres on Saturday, Meagher feels they

will be competitive. “Watch Out Boss goes

better further (than 1000 metres), but there

were no suitable races in the programme,”

said Meagher. “He has never been out of the

first four, always consistent. Lim’s Passion is

lightly-raced, and he has had some issues in

the past, but he ran well behind good horses

like Mr Malek and Rocket Star at his last start.

I think he is better over the 1200-metres

or further, but those races are later in the

month.”

You would have to think back to

Atlantic Jewel, perhaps even

Black Caviar, to find a horse who’s

created as much early excitement

as the four-year-old currently bearing that

most revered of titles in Australian racing – the

Melbourne Cup favourite - Russian Camelot.

The powerful Danny O’Brien trained entire

has already achieved the unprecedented.

In May, he became the first Northern

Hemisphere-bred galloper to win a Derby in

Australia, overcoming tremendous odds as a

natural two-year-old – he was 26 months at the

time – against southern rivals who’d officially

turn four only two months later, in the 2500m of

South Australia’s three-year-old classic.

At the same time, he’s been raising echoes

of some glorious past.

The son of Camelot was bought for O’Brien

by agent Jeremy Brummitt from Book 1 of

the 2018 Tattersalls yearling sale for 120,000

guineas (approx AUD$228,000), as O’Brien

sought to make hay in a field which had yielded

some exceptional results for some other

notable Australians.

Group 1 Australian Cup winner Fifty Stars,

by Sea The Stars, and another son of Camelot,

the Listed Warrnambool Cup winner Furrion,

were also bought at the Tattersalls sale and

shipped to Australia before racing.

But the template for such a long-range

endeavour was set in more legendary fashion –

if a little by accident – more than two decades

ago.

Australian agent John Foote went to the

Newmarket broodmare sale in 1998 to buy

a breeder or two for a South Australian tuna

fisherman making a splash in the world of

thoroughbreds, Tony Santic.

TREVOR MARSHALLSEA'S IN-DEPTH PEDIGREE ANALYSIS

Why go all that way? “The depth of quality

is immense,” Foote explained. “We in Australia

advocate that our sprinters are better, and

they probably are. But certainly the depth of

pedigrees in England, when you’re talking 1600

metres to 2400 metres and up, is better.

“They’ve been breeding horses for

hundreds of years, and we haven’t. They’ve got

rid of most of the rubbish.”

Foote bought the Riverman mare Tugela,

who happened to be in foal. While originally

intending to sell the offspring, Santic instead

flew her to Australia where she raced – as

Makybe Diva.

Of course she became the only horse to

win three Melbourne Cups, and while such a

feat remains fantasy, at this stage, for Russian

Camelot’s connections, you can see traits

evident in the four-year-old which inspired

the likes of Foote and O’Brien to look north;

the qualities jockey Glen Boss witnessed

when he first rode Makybe Diva in trackwork,

feeling beneath him for the first time the sort

of “ground-swallowing” English stayer who

seemed able to “run all day”, and recover from

those exertions disarmingly swiftly.

Similarly, Damien Oliver felt quality when

riding Russian Camelot to a comfortable debut

victory up Ballarat’s uphill straight in a 1400m

three-year-old maiden last October.

“Good horse,” the veteran said.

"I've trialled him and he's trialled like a nice

horse, but because he's six months behind,

being a European two-year-old, we haven't

really tried him hard as such.

"He's a great looking horse and he's always

given you the feel of a nice horse, but it's always

nice to see it there when you ask them for the

effort and they do respond."

O’Brien gave his developing colt time,

spelling him after his next start, a Listed

class second over 1800m at Flemington, and

resuming in the autumn. It wasn’t all smooth

sailing. Russian Camelot blew the start by

several lengths at his resumption, flashing

home for fourth over 1400m at headquarters,

then aborted his next assignment – and gave

Oliver a sore head – when he reared in the gates

at Caulfield and was scratched. That was the

last hitch we’ve seen.

O’Brien hastily diverted him into a 1600m

Benchmark 64 at Pakenham five days later

and, quality of the opposition notwithstanding,

Russian Camelot took the breath away with a

seven-length annihilation. A month to the day

later, he left eyebrows raised and heads shaking

in wonderment when John Allen (Oliver

couldn’t travel due to Covid restrictions) sat

wide and well back but purely sailed to a two-

length victory in the SA Derby. A neck second

in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes first-up

in September has now been followed by his

second top-tier triumph, an imperious win in

last Saturday’s 1800m Underwood Stakes.

The future looks immense for Russian

Camelot. His ancestral past is laced with quality

as well.

One unsurprising but important point: he

traces back to Pocahontas.

In the 1990s,

research on horses’

hearts by American

expert and author

Marianna Haun

identified the genetic

trait for a large

heart was carried

in what she called

the ‘X-factor gene’.

Her work suggested

the gene traced

back to one single

thoroughbred mare:

Pocahontas, born in England in 1837, with an

apparent mutation of a gene affecting heart

size.

The gene reappears randomly, but

appeared to be at play in two of her huge-

hearted offspring - Phar Lap and Secretariat

- and most probably Makybe Diva as well,

although her heart has not been measured.

Pocahontas touches Russian Camelot as

the dam of Stockwell, whose direct line flows

down to Northern Dancer, sire of the great

Sadler’s Wells, who appears on both sides of

Russian Camelot’s pedigree in a 3x3 cross.

Now, since Pocahontas lived so long ago

and produced a much-coveted line, she does

appear in most modern pedigrees. Still, it’s

good to know she’s there.

On Russian Camelot’s paternal line,

Australians are well familiar with the sire who

provides half his name, the Epsom and Irish

derbies winner Camelot. The son of Montjeu,

by Sadler’s Wells, has sired some other quality

stayers to have raced here. There’s last year’s

Moonee Valley Cup winner Hunting Horn,

and another of Camelot’s five Group 1 winners

worldwide in Irish Derby winner and 2018

MacKinnon Stakes runner-up Latrobe. Plus

there’s one other imperious stayer who gave

O’Brien more South Australian glory last

autumn, and who’s also high in Melbourne

Cup markets, the Adelaide Cup winner King Of

Leogrance.

Russian Camelot takes the first half of

his name from dam Lady Babooshka (GB), a

grand-daughter of Sadler’s Wells. She was by

the famed Cape Cross, sire of the champions

Ouija Board and Epsom Derby winners Sea

The Stars and Golden Horn. Russian Camelot is

so far the only one of Lady Babooshka’s three

offspring to have raced.

On Russian Camelot’s female line, you have

to go back to his great-grand dam Bella Colora

(GB) to find a stakes-winning producer. By

Bellypha (IRE) out of the Jimmy Reppin (GB)

mare Reprocolor (GB), Bella Colora was herself

a triple stakes-winner in the UK and France.

Put to Sadler’s Wells she produced Stagecraft,

winner of the (then G2) 1991 Prince Of Wales’s

Stakes at Royal Ascot and eight other Group

races, and thrice G1-placed.

Stagecraft enjoyed success as a sire in

Chile, siring the mare Noches De Rosa, a black

type winner at home before moving to the US

to win the 2004 G1 Breeders’ Cup Handicap at

Hollywood Park and Santa Anita’s G2 Santa Ana

Handicap, both 1800m.

Stagecraft also sired Benhur, who was good

enough to win more than $US5.6 in such a

market as Chile, with nine wins in 34 starts.

Another Bella Colora performer was

Stagecraft’s half-brother, Mullins Bay by

Machiavellian (USA), a G3 winner at York who

was multiple stakes-placed.

In all, Bella Colora was a prolific producer,

with 13 named foals, 10 of whom raced.

These also include the source of the current

Melbourne Cup favourite’s Russian flavour,

Stagecraft’s full sister Balalaika, a Listed class

winner of two of 13 starts in the UK.

Russian Camelot is so far the only dual

victor among Camelot’s five G1 winners. With

two G1s and almost a million dollars in the

bank, he might just prove the best of his sire’s

offspring for quite some time at least.

STEVE MORAN

| 11 |

BY STEVE MORAN | @STEVEM_MORAN

If recent history is any guide, then

Western Australian galloper Gatting

faces a monumental task to repeat his

Eastern seaboard debut in the Group 1

Maybe Diva (Craiglee) Stakes win in tomorrow’s

Group 1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield.

Not only does the son of Hard Spun have

to defy the usually huge odds against longshot

winners repeating, he’d become just the third

horse in 30 years to complete the double; 25

have tried and only Weekend Hussler (2008)

and Northerly (2002) have been successful.

Furthermore, none the past ten Craiglee

Stakes winners has managed to win another race

during the spring which is verily dumbfounding

and must cast some doubt over its Group 1 status

in a Melbourne carnival which, ridiculously, has

six Group 1 races from 1600 metres to 2040 metres

in about as many weeks.

In contrast, the Group 2 Feehan Stakes

— won this year by Homesman — has been a

much better portent of things to come through

the balance of the spring carnival.

Six of the past ten Feehan winners have

won again in the coming weeks. The exceptions

include Rekindled Interest and Whobegotyou,

who were later placed in Cox Plates, and Magic

Consol who didn’t race again that year.

Four of the past five Underwood Stakes

winners have come via the Feehan including,

of course, Homesman who won last year after

finishing second in the Moonee Valley race and

he looks a superior horse in 2019.

Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman won

the 2017 Underwood with four-year-old mare

Bonneval [who’d won the Feehan] and they

saddle another four-year-old, this time male,

in The Chosen One — who looks the principal

danger to Homesman.

The follow-up form of major race winners

is something of a fascination and generally less

impressive than you might think. Examining

the two major races at Caulfield last Saturday is

interesting.

Begood Toya Mother was a fast and

spectacular winner of the Rupert Clarke Stakes

albeit with a “fired up” Iconoclasm providing

him with some unexpected cover.

Begood Toya Mother is now expected to be

spelled. Moment Of Change, a low weighted

Rupert Clarke winner like Begood Toya Mother,

is the only victor in recent memory [certainly in

the past ten years] to have had an immediate

break and he returned to run second to Black

Caviar in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes and then

went on to win a brace of Group 1 races.

Trust In A Gust and Stratum Star are the

only Rupert Clarke winners, in the past ten

years, to score again that spring - taking the

Group 1 Toorak Handicap and Group 3 Coongy

Handicap respectively.

Similarly, last weekend’s Group 3

Naturalism Stakes has produced just two

subsequent springtime winners in the past

decade; Jameka who went on to win the Group

1 Caulfield Cup and December Draw who won

the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes before failing in

the Caulfield Cup.

Lindsey Smith has pulled off

a remarkable training feat by

managing to rejuvenate the

once retired Black Heart Bart

(Blackfriars) to win his sixth Group 1 race and

second Underwood Stakes (1800m) - three

years on from his first victory in the Caulfield

feature.

Western Australian Smith took over the

Warrnambool stables once owned by Black

Heart Bart’s disqualified trainer Darren Weir

and was asked by the horse’s owners to attempt

to resurrect the nine-year-old gelding’s career.

Smith conceded that he was not overly

confident that Black Heart Bart would make

it back to the races until an encouraging

Cranbourne barrier trial effort last month.

"Before he trialled I started to doubt, but

then he trialled well," Smith said.

"His first race was good and then his second

run was plain, but we thought getting him up to

the 1800 metres would be good as he wouldn't

be chasing all the time.

"It's a good result." Continued on page 2>>

MORNING BRIEFING

Dunn gets job doneon RenewalWayne Hawkes believes the key to Renewal’s

Listed win was Dwayne Dunn not panicking

despite being last and a long way off the leader

Zoustyle. "He had a terrible run in transit but

the biggest thing was Dwayne didn't panic,"

Hawkes said. "He just saved it to the last little

bit and he hit the line well." Zoustyle’s trainer

Tony Gollan was ruing the fact that his smart

sprinter missed the stakes win by such a narrow

margin. "It's a big learning curve for him. It's his

first trip away and this was his first time racing

the Melbourne way of going,” Gollan said. "I

think it's important if I can just keep him in his

right grade I can keep him progressing along.

We won't aim too high I don't think at this

stage. And I think if we come back this time

next year we're going to have a bona fide Group

1 horse." Morning Briefing page 12 >>

Black Heart Bart ($101) held off last

year's winner, the $2.50 favourite Homesman (War Front), to win by a

short neck.

Fellow Warrnambool-trained veteran Gailo Chop (Deporvito) ($26)

was one and a half lengths away in third.

The Blackfriars (Danehill) gelding ran eighth first-up in the Memsie

Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) behind his new stablemate Scales Of Justice (Not A

Single Doubt), before running 11th in last week’s Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes

(Gr 1, 1400m) behind Begood Toya Mother (Myboycharlie).

"Even though those two runs might have looked a bit plain, he was

warming up and I've been happy with him," jockey Brad Rawiller said.

"Today, the whole way through the run I was thinking 'geez, we're

going to be in this'."

It was Black Heart Bart’s first win since the 2017 Futurity Stakes (Gr

1, 1400m). He was retired by Weir and his owners almost 12 months ago

after finishing well back in last year’s Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m).

An emotional Rawiller, the long-time rider of Black Heart Bart, was

delighted to see the gelding return to Group 1 winning form.

It also capped Rawiller’s own comeback from a broken neck which

almost ended his career, having been kept on the sidelines for nearly six

months after being seriously injured last October.

"I've won a Golden Slipper and a Caulfield Cup and I never looked like

getting teary, and I'm nearly in tears," he said.

"It's just amazing. I can't put it into words. Since coming back from my

broken neck it's been a long road.

"At the end of the day I haven't had much to look forward to as far as

rides for the spring and Black Heart Bart was always just my sole focus.

"I've been really happy with how he has been coming along.

"Last week after the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes when I was asked about

him, I said 'he lit the fire today'. But you've still got to see it.

"I'm still overwhelmed myself, to be honest, even though I thought he

could win today."

Nature Strip (Nicconi) staked his

claim for a potential shot at The

Everest (1200m) when silencing

his doubters with an impressive

victory in the AJ Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at

The Valley last night.

The Chris Waller-trained gelding

harboured plenty of criticism after his last

start in the Concorde Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m)

when he failed to settle on the front end.

However, he showed he is a bona fide Group

1 horse with an impressive win in the $1

million sprint.

Ridden by James McDonald, Nature Strip

began well from the inside barrier and was able

to hold the inside advantage to eventually lead.

The track record holder over the course

and distance from last year's McEwen Stakes

(Gr 2, 1000m) Nature Strip kicked strongly

around the turn and was able to hold off a

gallant Miss Leonidas (I Am Invincible) by a

short neck. Continued on page 2>>

Everest-bound filly Sunlight (Zoustar)

closed strongly late to finish the same distance away in third with Ian

McEwen Stakes winner Faatinah (Nicconi) another short-head further

back in fourth.

Waller admitted after the race that the horse gets a lot of negative

attention, but this win might put a stop to the bad press.

"He's a popular horse," Waller joked. "We seem to get more criticism

with him than we ever got with

another certain horse [Winx]

who was probably our last Group

1 winner here.

"That's racing, everyone has

got their opinions. He's a good

horse and today he stepped away

well. James didn't panic he just

got there gradually and it was a

good race.

"You think punters get

frustrated, well owning a horse

and training a horse when you're

running in these types of races,

it's a bitter pill to take when you

don't quite get it right.

"So I think it's a good reward to everybody and I hope the punters had

something on as well and got a bit back from last start when apparently I

did everything wrong."

Waller hopes Nature Strip secures a spot in the $14 million Everest at

Randwick on October 19 and the gelding will now head to the Schillaci

Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Caulfield on October 12 - the winner of that race

will represent the Melbourne Racing Club in the $14 million sprint a week

later.

"I don't think 1200 metres is a problem," Waller said. "I'd say we'll just

see what unfolds in the next few days. If he doesn't get an invite for The

Everest I guess the Schillaci Stakes is the logical choice."

Meanwhile, trainer Shaun Dwyer said Miss Leonidas ran a great race

while Sunlight's co-trainer Tony McEvoy could not hide his delight over

the mare's performance.

McEvoy said he would run Sunlight the Gilgai Stakes at Flemington,

two weeks before The Everest at Randwick.

"I'm pumped," McEvoy said. "I feel like I've won the race.

"The risk was the 1000 meters tonight and that's all that cost her the

race."

Passed in for $90,000 (reserve $120,000) at the 2016 Inglis Melbourne

Premier Yearling Sale, Nature Strip (5 g Nicconi - Strikeline by Desert Sun)

took his record to 11 wins and two placings from 18 starts for prize-money

of $1,879,285.

BETTING FORECAST: 4-5iPegasus Glory, 7iSprint Forward, 8iRun Run Good,10iGintoki, Marvelous Fans, Whiskey Neat, 14iHurricane Kunde, 33iFreshPower, 50iEuro Lago.

VERDICT A market move for one (or more) of the newcomers will spicethings up a bit but by far the most obvious answer to this

uncompetitive race is PEGASUS GLORY, who moves up to 6f after a verypromising second on last month’s debut. Sprint Forward may provide the mainthreat.

VERDICT There are good reasons to believe that both Vincy andTangmere will be on the premises but XIANG BAI QI is only

1lb higher than when winning over today’s trip at Happy Valley just under a year agoand might be the answer. His new jockey, Jerry Chau, rode 77 winners during a stintin Australia and is excellent value for the 10lb he is eligible to claim in Hong Kong.

VERDICT Good Days was very consistent towards the end of last seasonbut today’s drop back in trip is probably not ideal and it might be

worth chancing SALTO OLIMPICO, who probably had a bit too much use made ofhim in the early stages when fifth over 1m2f here in June and has been given somehelp by the handicapper. Natural Storm and Fast Pace may also feature.

VERDICT More can be expected from Wishful Thinker, who mixed it withthe big league last season and should strip fitter after his recent

return, but BIG PARTY won a very similar race to this over C&D last December andgets the nod. Computer Patch is being brought along nicely by Tony Cruz and heshould have a role to play now stepping up in grade again.
