The Work of Christmas, by Howard Thurman

When the song of the angels is stilled, When the star in the sky is gone, When the kings and princes are home, When the shepherds are back with their flock, The work of Christmas begins:

To find the lost, To heal the broken, To feed the hungry, To release the prisoner, To rebuild the nations, To bring peace among brothers, To make music in the heart.

January 1: Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God Most Catholics go to church on Christmas Day or Christmas Eve, but did you know that January 1 is also a holy day of obligation? The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God falls exactly one week after Christmas, the end of the octave of Christmas. It is fitting to honour Mary as Mother of Jesus, following the birth of Christ. When Catholics celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God we are not only honouring Mary, who was chosen among all women throughout history to bear God incarnate, but we are also honouring our Lord, who is fully God and fully human. Calling Mary "mother of God" is the highest honor we can give Mary. Just as Christmas honours Jesus as the "Prince of Peace," the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God honors Mary as the "Queen of Peace." This solemnity, falling on New Year's Day, is also designated the World Day of Peace. Please join us in celebrating these days: Tuesday, December 31: 5:00 p.m. & Wednesday, January 1: 10:00 a.m. Poinsettias for our Church’s Christmas Decoration The Christmas Season is a time when the deceased who have been part of our lives are on our minds and especially in our hearts. We may want to give tangible expression by bringing a poinsettia to the church for Christmas, the Feast of God’s love for all, the living and the dead. In that light, the poinsettia serves as a sign of our continued affection for those who have died and as an expression of faith that the dead are embraced by God’s love. Poinsettias may be brought to the church in the days leading up to Christmas. Thank you! Church Envelopes for 2015 The Sunday collection is the main source of revenue for the parish. Some people use church envelopes so that they can get tax receipts for their donations. The church envelopes for 2015 are now available in the back of the church (behind the folding doors). If you do not find your box, please let us know! This is also an occasion to update our parish records. In the box of envelopes, you will find a blue form which we invite you to complete. You may either return the form in the collection basket, or e-mail the information to [email protected]. Thanks for your help! Take note: Christmas Mass times are different this year Please note that a Mass has been added on Christmas Eve to accommodate the large numbers who usually come to the 7:00 p.m. Mass and requests from young families for an earlier Mass. December 24: 5:00 p.m., 7:00 p.m., and 9:00 p.m. and Christmas Day: 10:00 a.m.

St. Mark’s Office Hours over the Christmas/New Year’s Period The office will be closed Wednesday, December 24th. Staff will be on hand on Wednesday/Thursday, December 30th & 31st and on Friday, January 2nd. Please note the next edition of the Parish Bulletin will be issued the weekend of January 10-11. Prayers for the Sick Kindly remember Marie McFadden, Vern Gillespie, David Hendricks, Liam Harkim Elder, Christina Bradford and Kevin Jaques and their families in your prayers.
