Mitzvah Gems By Esti Greenstein

Bais Yaakov of Baltimore

Grade Level: Kindergarten Description: Complete Mitzvah note program for Kindergarten revolving around the theme of “Fill Your Treasure Chest with Mitzvah Gems!” Includes story, mitzvah note templates, and a letter to parents. Goals/Objectives: To provide an appealing incentive for children to perform mitzvos and to understand the relationship between performance of mitzvos and the real reward to come. Instructions:

1. Prepare a large bulletin board on which to display the notes, with the heading, “Filling Our Treasure Chest with Mitzvah Gems”

2. Board can be enhanced with a large treasure chest, or by enlarging and copying the gem templates onto bright and/or shiny paper and using as a border.

3. Read the story to the students, explaining the nimshal (meaning) in simple terms (“our mitzvos are like gems we can collect all day!”)

4. Send home the story, the letter to the parents, and copies of the blank “gem notes” on brightly colored paper. Parents cut out gems, write the child’s daily mitzvos on them and send them back to school.

5. Display the notes after reading them aloud by stapling onto the bulletin board.

Variations:

• Cut out the gems before sending them home to make it easier on parents, or have children cut them out.

• Save each child’s notes in an envelope at the end of each semester, and start the display afresh. At the end of the year, paste each child’s accumulated notes into a “treasure chest” scrapbook for a memento that will be “treasured” forever.

Fill Your Treasure Chest with Mitzvah Gems!

We are looking forward to a year full of beautiful mitzvos. In order to encourage your child to sparkle with “middos tovos” (good character) we urge you to take a few moments each week to write a mitzvah note about the special mitzvos your child has done at home. We are providing you with “mitzvah gem” stationary for this purpose. We read these notes aloud each morning. We know how busy you are, but we feel that this is an important means of reinforcing and rewarding the mitzvos that we teach. May we all be “zoche” to acquire a “fortune” in mitzvos this year!

Adapted from a parable of the Chofetz Chaim There once was a poor man named Shimon. Shimon tried very hard to earn

money for his family. He tried many different kinds of work, but he wasn't very successful.

One day Shimon heard about an island near Africa where there were so many

jewels that they were scattered all over the streets. He decided to travel to the island on a boat to collect some jewels.

It was a long, hard trip and he knew that he would not be home for a few years.

But he thought that if he could collect enough jewels he could sell them in his city and have enough money for his family. Shimon bought a ticket on the boat. The captain told him that he would take him to the island and leave him there. It was such a hard trip and such a small island that the boat would not come back for Shimon until the end of the year.

When Shimon got off the boat at the end of the trip he saw that the streets really

were sparkling with jewels. He dropped his suitcase on the ground and started stuffing jewels into his pockets. Shimon heard people all around him laughing. They said to him, “Why are you in such a hurry? You're going to be here for a whole year. You have plenty of time. Relax!"

Shimon decided that the people were right. There were more than enough jewels

for everyone to take. He soon discovered that the island people thought the jewels were just pretty stones. They weren't worth much to them! He asked the island people what was worth a lot of money to them. They told him that it was very hard for them to get enough cooking oil. Anyone who could find oil, prepare it, and sell it would soon be rich on their island.

Shimon decided that since he was going to be on the island for a whole year,

he would try to make cooking oil to sell to the island people. He could always collect jewels when it was time to leave.

Shimon spent so much time learning how to make cooking oil that he forgot

why he had come to this island! As he went about his work each day, he thought about the barrels of oil that he would soon have. They would be worth a lot of money! If he happened to see an especially pretty jewel in the street he would put it into his pocket. But he usually stepped all over the jewels as if they were just stones in the street.

After a year, Shimon had many barrels of oil. He heard that the boat would soon

be back to pick him up. He carefully packed the barrels up and carried them down to the boat. On the way to the boat he suddenly remembered why he had come to this island in the first place! But surely he could also make a lot of money by selling the oil too! After all it was valuable to the island people! He scooped up a few jewels on his

Page 22: A Whole Year of Kindergartenfiles.turesponse.org/PirkeiAvos/284c_o_00535complete_remake[2].pdf · of the beautiful mitzvos that our daughter does for you! 8) A small photo of [name

way to the boat, but he was in too much of a hurry to really collect many. After a few weeks on the boat, Shimon's oil began to smell bad. People

complained to the captain and he sent his sailors to look for the place where the bad smell was coming from. They found Shimon's rotting barrels of oil. The captain ordered Shimon to throw the oil into the ocean. Shimon cried and begged the captain not to make him throw away his precious oil; but the captain would not listen. "The oil is no good anymore. You can't sell it! You don't need it. Dump it out! Now!"

Shimon was so sad. He realized that he had wasted his whole year

making oil that was not worth anything! He should have spent his year collecting precious jewels. When Shimon got home his family was so happy to see him. But Shimon was embarrassed and upset. He took off his jacket and went right to bed.

His wife thought that he must be tired from his long trip, so she let him

sleep as long as he wanted to. She took the jacket and went to put it away. The pockets felt so heavy and she decided to see what Shimon had put into them. When Shimon's wife found the jewels she was so excited! She took them to the jewelry store to ask the storekeeper what they were worth. "Wow! You are a very lucky person;" he said “These jewels are worth a lot of money."

Shimon's wife was very happy. She ran home to thank her husband for

bringing home such wonderful jewels. But Shimon only started to cry. “Why are you crying?" she said in surprise “You have brought back such a great surprise. The jeweler said the jewels are worth a lot of money!"

Shimon sighed and said, "Don't you understand? If I would have

remembered why I went to that island I would have brought back hundreds of jewels. They were all over the streets. But the island people thought that cooking oil was worth a lot more, so I learned how to make it instead. I wasted my time and now it's too late!"

This story teaches us a big lesson about mitzvos. You see, our own world

is like the island. The reason why Hashem put us in this world is to collect "jewels" - which are His mitzvos! Mitzvos are sparkling everywhere we look… visiting sick people, helping our parents and friends, learning Torah! If we would spend our time the right way, we would have a fortune in precious mitzvos! Sometimes we forget this and try to copy the "islanders" (i.e. the other nations) and what they think is important.

Let's try to collect as many precious “mitzvah gems” as we can this year! For a more complete “adult” version of this story please see The Maggid Speaks by Rabbi P. Krohn.

Rosh Hashanah Mitzvah Checklist

I helped my tn¦t to get ready for Yom Tov . I gave ve¨sm before Yom Tov. I ate apple dipped in honey for a sweet New Year. I ate a “special” i«um¨r h¦v±h food, such as tzimmis or a fish head. I listened to the shofar telling me to do vcUJ§T. I sat quietly and looked for “t” in the while tn¦t davened. I said a Ub²h¡j¤v¤J for new clothes or a new fruit. I went to say lhk§JT and “threw away” my ,«urcg.

Welcome to ,ufrC Month

We will be devoting the next four weeks to learning all about four important

Brochos:

Week One: Nov. 2-6 .g©v Ha-aytz: fruits and nuts that grow on trees

Week Two: Nov. 9-13 ,«ub«uz§n Mezonos: baked goods (except bread) Week Three: Nov. 16-20 k«F©v¤J Shehakol: candy, drinks, eggs,

cheese, tuna Week Four: Nov. 23-25 v¨n¨s©t©v Ha-Adama: vegetables, also any

fruits that grow on the ground such as pineapple & banana, also peanuts.

Each week we will ask you to send in morning snacks from the brocha of the week. Please try to be ‘creative’ and send in a wide variety of foods. In this way the girls will become familiar with the many foods for each type of brocha. We will prepare a special Shabbos treat to enjoy at our weekly Shabbos party related to the brocha of the week. We will also make a placemat that can be used to practice and review the brochos after Brochos Month, at home. If you have any special talents that are related to a particular brocha (cake decorating, candy making, fancy garnish vegetables etc.) that you would like to demonstrate for the class we would love to hear from you before the appropriate week, so that we can schedule time for a special presentation! Thank you for helping us to make this a delicious learning experience!!!

Dear Parents, As vfrc Month draws to a close, I would like to give you an idea of the basic concepts that we learned:

1. The vfrc “.gv hrp truc” is recited before eating fruits or nuts that

grow on a tree. The vburjt vfrc for all fruits and nuts (except the 7 special kinds: olives, grapes, pomegranates, figs, dates) is ",uapb truc".

2. The vfrc “vnstv hrp truc” is recited before eating vegetables or

fruits and nuts that grow on bushes or in the ground (bananas grow on a plant that is not considered a tree). The vburjt vfrc for these foods is “,uapb truc”.

3. The vfrc ,ubuzn hbhn truc is recited before eating foods which are

made with wheat, barley, oats, spelt or rye, which are not types of bread. The vburjt vfrc is “vhjnv kg”.

4. The vfrc “urcsc vhvb kfva” is recited before eating candy, or other

foods, which do not contain types of grain. It is also recited before drinking any beverages, except wine or grape juice. The vburjt vfrc is “,uapb truc”.

5. The vfrc “.rtv in ojk thmunv” is our umbrella vfrc. This means

that it “covers” all of the other foods at our meal, and they do not need separate ,ufrc (with the exception of fruit that is not served as part of the main meal -but is served afterwards).

6. When we make a vfrc we hold the food in our right hand. I hope that this “introduction” to the world of ,Ufrc will be a good foundation for your child’s continued growth in this important vumn. Today we had our first ouhx, where we created our own vfrc menu, placed each food on its proper place on our ,ufrc placemats and enjoyed a taste of each vfrc! As is the usual procedure at a ouhx, we learned about a new set of ,ufrc that we will begin to study now...the ,ufrc of vfubj!!! May we be vfuz to much ,jb from “our” girls this year!!!!
