October 2018 District Governor Eileen Schirer www.lions5m-6.org
If I had to tell you all I have done in the
last month, I would need to reference
my calendar. But if I was asked what are
the things you enjoyed above all others,
that’s easy. Seeing Lions working
together. This includes not only the
service projects you are doing, but also
the meetings you are in, where planning
takes place so that projects function
well. I have been privileged to present
some awards recently. The plaque is
only a small piece of the story – it’s all
the planning, work, and fellowship that adds up to so many hours. Then it’s those
watchful folks that help determine how to distribute awards that make giving them out
so special. It’s those stories that will help others decide that Lions is a worthwhile
organization to spend their time on. I encourage all clubs to take note of your members
– watch what they do and see what is important to them. Then consider an award for a
job well done, and add the story of why the award is being presented. If you are not
sure what awards are available take a look at the listing in the handout that each club
received at the All District Meeting in August.
My plans are set to attend the USA/Canada Forum again this year. Why- because I
have found these forums so worthwhile. The speakers and their topics are of “resume
quality”. The motivation we get from them will re-energize all who attend. If you
aren’t going this year consider heading to Spokane WA September 19-21, 2019.
Northern Pride – Have you made plans to attend? This is an easy one because it’s in
MN and its cheap. But it is packed with great Lions presenters and topics enough so you will find many sessions that
will be of interest. Make plans to carpool so you can connect with fellow lions on the drive up. Also, it’s an opportunity
to hear our 3rd Vice International President Brian speak.
My District Governors Visit form is on the District web site. For the 21 clubs that have already responded and
scheduled with me – Thanks. For the remaining clubs, I await your request and look forward to a visit.

A Word from our District Governor, Lion Eileen Schirer

Hello Fellow Lions-
Since my last article, a few of us met to work on membership. That is a growing theme
and concern around the globe. At the USA/CANADA Forum, we had many classes about
that. We all want our organization to be around for the next 100 years!! Please be
creative and ask others to join our wonderful Lions family! Please talk to Lion Judy
Zewers for more information.
Several of us spent many days at the state fair selling tickets for rides. It’s a terrific way
to increase your administration fund. Please consider helping out next year. We have
too few people working this project. We need more help!!! We are 1,400 people strong
in our district, we need more hands for this project. Talk to Lion Joe Fox for more
information.
As I am writing this, I am waiting for the plane to bring me back to MN from the USA/
CANDA Forum in Ohio. It was great! I wish I could bring you all with me! The classes
were terrific, the people from Ohio were very friendly, and it was a fun place to visit. I
cannot tell you enough how wonderful it is to see all your friends from Canada, US, and
the Caribbean. Life can’t be lived without friends. Lion friends cannot be beat! Next
year, the Forum is in Spokane, WA. I highly recommend going if you haven’t gone yet.
There were two men who have been to all the Forums for the last 42 years! What a
record. Please talk to Lion Marlene Hayman for
more information.

A New Century of Service
What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word “New?” Do you think of something positive and inviting or instead do
you begin to feel nervous as if a storm is coming your way? We hear this word a lot and in so many different contexts but it is hardly ever
communicated as anything other than something to be enthusiastic and excited about. Is it the change involved with the “New”, the
transition ahead, or could it be the way in which the “New” is being communicated that is causing the angst?
To me, “New” in Lions can mean a lot of different things, none of which includes simply a reversal of “Old” or the abandonment of
experience, knowledge, and hard work of all those who made this 2nd Century possible. It is rather the inclusion of new voices and the
welcoming of new opportunities and possibilities – inviting diversity in opinions and perspectives. When you put all of these coexisting
ingredients together with new technology and communications, it is like strong individual notes coming together in harmony to make
beautiful music. Music sounds a little empty if notes are only played one at a time. It is the interaction between different notes played
together (Harmony) that gives music its richness and color.
“I don’t know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know; the ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found
how to serve, for the purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others.” - Albert Schweitzer, 1875

President’s Message Pursuing New Horizons with International
President, Gudrun Yngvadottir
Dear Lion,
The hard work of every Lion is critical to our global impact. We each bring
hope and dignity through our service, but there’s only so much we can do on
our own. With the support of Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF), our
global Foundation, we can accomplish so much more together.
That’s why LCIF launched Campaign 100: LCIF Empowering Service.
Campaign 100 will empower the service of Lions around the world, helping us
do what Lions do best - SERVE. Keep reading to see how 100% of your
generous financial gift supports your causes, your programs, and your ser-
vice.
In friendship,
Gudrun Yngvadottir
Your International President
Bring Campaign 100 to Your Club Today

every Lion matters to Campaign 100. Here’s how you can
help your club learn more about LCIF and support
Campaign 100 now:
• Learn more about the campaign by downloading the Campaign 100 brochure
• Share this overview of why Campaign 100 matters with you club.
• Contribute generously as 100% of your gift will support our service.
Experience the LCIF Difference
The generosity of Lions and LCIF produces incredible
stories like this:
“As a parent, you always try to keep your child safe,”
says Jeri DiPasquale. “But a diagnosis of diabetes
changes everything. You suddenly hold your child’s life in your hands.”
Read the full story to see how a grant from LCIF transformed one Lion’s experience
with diabetes into a lifesaving program for an entire community.

My Lions Diabetes Story By Lion Robert Olson
Being involved with the Lions Diabetes Foundation comes at a time when I am trying to control my blood sugar numbers more than ever. It all started when I turned the age of 31, I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. I entered the hospital and my blood sugar numbers were well over 600, so off the charts that the meter couldn’t go high enough. Since those beginning times of adjusting my diet, exercise and giving myself insulin shots, my life has changed for the better. I am now on an insulin pump which provides me with insulin since my pancreas cannot produce enough to keep me regulated throughout the
course of the day. Living with Diabetes is a lifelong changing event. Yes, type 2 can be prevented, yet there seems to be more and more diagnoses happening on a daily basis. Eating healthy and having an exercise regimen that works for you is the start to controlling any type of diabetes.
When I became a Lions member, I know that the Lions were working toward a cure for Diabetes but I didn’t know any more information. I became a Diabetes co-trustee because I want to spread the word on how Diabetes can be prevented and also how people can learn to live with Diabetes. Seeing the many aspects at the University of Minnesota, it amazes me how close the cure really is. Starting with pig islets and artificial pancreases; the options are well worth the research and the time that is put into such projects. By raising awareness through the Lions, I have met many individuals, who have been recently diagnosed or have been living with it for years, and are willing to help spread the word about the recent research updates; devices that can now test blood sugars every 15 minutes and tell the insulin pump to give insulin when needed. It has taken many years to have such technology; in the end it will save many lives. Also having service dogs de-tect low blood sugars is simply amazing.
Having Lions International hop on board to help spread the word about diabetes, will have a huge effect on many people across the world and hopefully there will be a cure at the end of this race. Since we have partnered with Cub Foods and Walmart to help people be tested for diabetes, I believe we have helped many people in our local community.
I received the dream catcher award from
my club recently. I was honored to be a
recipient of such an excellent award and
know what it means to be a Lion.
