P R E F A C E

M o s t first-year Greek students seem to be motivat ed by the s ame interest: they wantto read the Greek Ne w Tes tament as soon as possible. In the mind of beginn ing students,however, the drudgery of basic memory work—vocabulary, declensions, con jugations—seems to wear o n unending ly. A ccor dingly , these potential Greek enthusiastsoften feel their grammars have become little more than tedious tools for pedanticallyplowing through paradigms. They are chafing at th e bit, anx ious to see th e historical

and personal relevancy of all these exercises. They want to apply their newl y acquiredgrammatical skills to the literary documen ts themsel ves. A l l too often, however, theyhave little systematic exposure to the b iblical Greek text before comple ting their introductory grammar.

This workbook to 1 J o h n has been produced to resolve this frustrating scenar io.The present edition is designed for the student wh o is sli ghtl y past the midpoint in anintroductory gra mma r and wishes to begin and complete the trans lati on of a New Testament book.

First J o h n is ideally suited for introducing s tudents to the Greek text of the N ew Testament. First, the letter is short. Its five chapters of 105 verses can be studied in a limitedamoun t of class time. The assign ments that follow are conveniently broken down to anaverage of four verses each. Secondly, it gives a greater sense of accomplishment whenan entire book is read rather t ha n only sections of books.

Thirdly, the vocabulary and syntax of 1 J o h n are about the simplest Greek for first-year students to master. C o m p l e x sentences and hapax legomena (words occurring butonce) are relatively rare. The entire book of 1 J o h n uses a vocabulary of only 234 Greekwords , and (as you may see by browsing through the G R E E K - E N G L I S H D I C T I O N A R Y OF

F I R S T J O H N ) many of these are co mmo n terms given i n most introductory Greek grammars. I n light of this, st udents wh o begi n to work thr ough 1 J o h n soon come t o realizethat it is indeed possible to read biblical Greek. The resulting sense of accomp lishmentusually provides a needed encouragement for th e beginner to continue the study ofG r e e k o n a more advanced level.

The ass ign men ts ass ume the student h as already progressed thr oug h lesson 15 ofMachen 's grammar, lesson 28 of Wenh am' s grammar, or chapter 23 of Mounce' sgrammar a n d thus w i l l already know words given in the earlier chap ters o f thesegrammars (e.g., d8eXc|>6g, dydTrn, K O C f j i o g , vioq, etc.). A knowle dge of the con juga

tions and declensions giv en in the early chapters of the element ary gra mma rs w i l l alsobe assumed. Students w i l l be encouraged when they see so many terms and forms thatthey already know.

Var ious Q U E S T I O N S listed under each assignment draw the student into the Greek text of 1 J o h n . Space is provided so that answers and comments may be written in. M a n y of these q uestions review basic

grammar.

Further quest ions given under the heading F O R F U R T H E R S T U D Y , however, aim at amore comprehensive unders tanding of Greek gr amm ar and expose the student to various principles of exegesis and syntactical analysis. Most questions are followed by pagenumbers from selected volumes where answers may be discovered. These study exer

cises are not intended to exhaus t the mean ing of the text; rather, they are meant to acquaint the student with certain research procedures. In addition, they are designed tointroduce the student to major bibliographic tools and resources for exegesis in theG r e e k New Testame nt. These include grammar s, wordbooks, lexicons, dictionaries, concordances, and commentaries. A ll references employed in the study assignments are included in the bibliography.

M o s t of the questions in the FOR F U R T H E R S T U D Y section require more time andthought to answer. Th ey provide students with the opportunity to explore the textmore deeply and are especially suitable for classroom discussion. These include questions on etymology, textual criticism, and grammatical issues that may require a significant amoun t of time to research and answer. B i b l i c a l exegesis, however, mustalways move from seeking to unders tand what the text says (our prima ry focus in theV O C A B U L A R Y

sections of the 2 5 ass ignmen ts) to what the text t eachesabout God and G o d ' s relationship to the world. The F O R F U R T H E R S T U D Y questions,therefore, are most often based on a part icula r Greek word or clause of theol ogi ca l importanc e a nd are primarily aimed at unco ver ing theol ogi cal and applica tiona l aspectsof the bibl ical segment being studied. Acc or din gl y, soun d exegesis is a process thatstarts with the bibli cal text and leads the exegete into disco vering what rel evance thattext may have for today's church.

Expanding on the above, the broad process of bibl ica l interpreta tion invo lves several steps. It starts with gra mmat ical -his tori cal exegesis, an exa min at ion of the words

of the text in their original setting. This step is the very foundation of all biblical interpre tat ion and is therefore the primary purpose an d emp has is of this study guide . U t il i z ing the origi nal lang uage(s ) of Scripture, students must learn how to find the verbalme an in g of the text (what the author intended to say) wi th in its hist orica l, cul tura l,and literary context.

The second step is the olo gi cal exeges is. Every bibl ica l text is ani mated by sometheological concern. This step seeks to determine the authoritative theological teaching or timeless theo log ica l principles within the pas sag e. The final step invo lves the affective dimension of exegesis whereby the text is applied in concrete ways in the life ofthe contemporary Christian community. The F O R F U R T H E R S T U D Y questions usuallyfocus more on either or both of the last two steps of exeges is th an the first step m entioned above . The First Letter of J o h n is an onym ous but has traditionally been attributed to J o h nthe apostle, author of the Four th G o s p e l . This was the identification made by Irenaeus(ca. A . D . 140-203), Clement of Alexandria (ca. A . D . 155-215), Tertullian (ca. A . D .

150-222), and Origen (ca. A . D . 185-253).

When the ev idence is weighed, this early tradition seems to be a reasonable hypo thesis. The writer presents himself as an eyewitness of Jesus (1:1-4; 4:14). In addition , headdresses h is readers in such wa rm and loving tones as "little ch il dren" (2:1, 18; 3:7).These tender, fatherly express ions may well have come from an old ma n. T radit ioninforms us Jo hn ' s later years were spent in Ephesus from where he penned the letternear , or in . the last decade of the first century.

That the author of the letter is in all probabil ity J o h n the apostle is also borne out byits close similarity in style and vocabulary to the Fourth G o s p e l , which, in light of J o h n21:20-24 and the earlier tradition of the c hur ch , was likely writt en by this apostle . (For adiscussion of Johannine autho rship of the Fourth G o s p el , see D . A . Carson, The Gospel According to John [Grand Rapids: Eerdmans , 1991], 68-81.) The sentence st ructure in bot h is

simple and the style repetit ious. B oth employ contra st ing figures, suc h as ligh t and darkness, life and death, truth and lies, love and hate. Expressions in 1 J o h n similar to thoseof the Fourth G o s p e l include "abide." "do the truth," "Spirit of truth." "overcome theworld," "begotten of G o d , " "eternal l i fe," "lay down one's life," "light," "love," "newcommandment," "Paraclete," etc. Note the following parallels:

Moreover, the G o s p e l and the Epistle share certain grammatical features. A m o n gthese are the relat ive scarc ity of particles , the co mm on use of T I C K ; 6 with the participle(John 3:8,15,16; etc. and 1 J o h n 3:4; 5:1; etc.) and TT&V 6 with a finite verb or TTCXV T O withthe par ticiple (John 6:37, 39; 15:2; 1 J o h n 2:16; 5:4), the use of the demonst rat ive pr onoun

(o\>Tog) to int roduce a subordinate clause (J ohn 3:19; 5:16; 9:30; 13:35; 1 J o h n 2:3; 3:1;4:9; 5:9; etc.) , and the occurrences of Ka6cbg . . . KCCL (John 13:15; 1 J o h n 2:18), oi) KaGcog(John 6:58; 1 J o h n 3:12), d X X ' iva (John 1:8; 9:3; 1 J o h n 2:19) and m l . . . 8e (John 6:51;8:16; 15:27; 1 J o h n 1:3). This workbook wi l l therefore assume Jo ha nn in e authors hip of1 J o h n . Readers who prefer other conclusions are asked to accept the use of " J o h n " for"the author" for the sake of convenience and consistency.

John 's First Epistle appears to be more in the form of a sermon than a letter. It maybe observed that the usua l int roductory address and farewell greetings are not found. Inaddition, there is no historica l or geographic al informa tion, and apart from mention ofthe Lord, this writing lacks any contemporary persona l names . Al th ou gh such verses as1 J o h n 2:12-14,19; 3:1; 5:13 make it clear that the letter was addressed to Christians, the

omission of an y persona l references probably indicate s that the document was intendedto circulate as a general letter a mon g believers at lar ge. Clemen t of Alexandria indicatesthat J o h n served the various churches scattered throughout the province of A s i a (inmodern Turkey). It may be assumed, therefore, that 1 J o h n was sent to the churches ofthat province.

The immediate histori cal occasi on of this letter of J o h n was apparently the spread of

an early form of wha t later became kno wn as G n o s ti c is m . The G n o s t ic s held to a dualismthat viewed matter as ev i l and spirit as good. A good God would be totally separate fromthe evi l world of flesh and matter. Thus G o d , the Gnosti cs taugh t, could not have takenupon himself hum an flesh. Some forms of Gnosti cism ta ught that Jesus only seemed tohave taken on a body, a view called Docetism, from the Greek word 8OK€(O ("seem"). O t hers maintained that the divine Christ joined the human Jesus at his baptism and left himbefore his death. This later view was held by Cerinthus. Perhaps one or both of theseviews provided the backdrop to 1:1, 3; 2:22; 4:2-3 where J o h n stresses that Jesus Christwa s G o d 's Son come in the flesh. For J o h n , there was no cosmi c dualism . In Jesus Christ,

the divine and the human were one person. He was fully God and fully man.

G n o s t i c s also taught that salvation, which for them meant escape from the body,was achieved not through faith in Christ but through a special knowledge (the Greekword for "knowledge" is y v a x j i g , hence Gnosticism). Jo hn ' s repeated references to

Introduction

John 's letter is difficult to outli ne. He works wi th a numbe r of different themes suchas love (ctydTTT]), sin (duotpTict), the world ( K O O | J . O < ; ) , knowledge (yvcacrig) , and truth(d\f |0eia). These themes are repeated th rougho ut the book rather than treated in log ical sequence. As mentioned, J o h n displays contrast by using antithetical concepts. In

other places (e.g., 1:6-10), John's style is highly Semitic as seen in his use of parallelismand restatement of key ideas.

T he theology of J o h n is far from theoretical. He seeks to bring his readers into the reality of a close personal experience w ith the l iving God. His concern is emphatic: "thaty o u may know him who is true" (5:20). The Word of Life has become incarnate in theSo n of G o d. It is lo hn ' s desire that the Word of Life now be fleshed out in each believer.
