SHOW WHAT YOU KNOW ABOUT CHRIST’S BIRTH You already know a lot about the birth of Jesus. In the chart below, write down some

facts that you know about each of the events associated with the birth of Christ. As you

study Unit 1 of Scripture Adventures, you’ll learn even more about these events.

THREE VISITS FROM HEAVEN God doesn’t always send messengers from heaven to earth to teach and talk to his

children, but sometimes he does! You have just read how an angel came to three

people: Zacharias, Mary, and Joseph. Compare the experiences they had by filling in

the chart below.

her that she would be the mother of Jesus.

TO THE HILL CALVARY, MATTHEW 27

Jesus was already in pain and weak. His

suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane had

left him exhausted physically, mentally,

and spiritually. He had been awake all night being questioned by the Jewish and

Roman officials. Then he was beaten, mocked, and spit on by the Roman soldiers. The

Romans placed the wooden beam from his cross on his shoulders and forced him to

carry it through the city to the place of the crucifixion. Jesus walked along for a while,

but at last he could go on no longer. The soldiers saw a man standing by, Simon of

Cyrene. They made him carry Jesus’ cross for him to the place of the crucifixion,

called Golgotha or Calvary.

MATTHEW 27—TO CALVARY

34 They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he

had tasted thereof, he would not drink. 35 And they crucified him,

and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled

which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments

among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.

36 And sitting down they watched him there; 37 And set up over

his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF

THE JEWS.

MATTHEW 27—PREPARING FOR DEATH

26 Then released he Barabbas unto them: and

when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him

to be crucified.

27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus

into the common hall, and gathered unto him

the whole band of soldiers. 28 And they stripped

him, and put on him a scarlet robe.

29 And when they had

platted a crown of thorns,

they put it upon his head,

and a reed in his right

hand: and they bowed the

knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail,

King of the Jews!

30 And they spit upon him, and took the reed,

and smote him on the head. 31 And after that

they had mocked him, they took the robe off

from him, and put his own raiment on him, and

led him away to crucify him.

The sign over Jesus’ cross read,

“This is Jesus the King of the Jews.”


WHAT THINK YE OF CHRIST? Jesus once asked his Apostles, “What think ye of Christ?” (Matthew 22:42). Imagine

being one of these people from the story of Christ’s crucifixion. What did they think

about Jesus? Did they understand him? Did they believe in him? Did they wish they

had they lived their lives differently—more like his? Write what you think on the chart
