“Don’t know what music means to

February is a great month to re-

flect on our common love of mu-

sic at the Cellar. Eric Bogle, an in-

credibly talented South Australian

folk musician (via Scotland) sums

up what music means to him (and

to many of us I’m sure) so simply,

yet powerfully in his song “The

Last Note”.

This is one of the main reasons

why many of us a5end the

monthly sessions – so we can per-

form providing enjoyment to oth-

ers, and so we can receive enjoy-

ment and appreciate the perfor-

mances of others – sa8sfying that

absolute need to have music in

our lives.

The January session was a terrific

one, thanks so much to Ron for

hos8ng – Ron also ran the uke

group before the session so had a

very busy evening! Well done to

you.

There were several visitors to the

Cellar including Mary’s daughter

Amy and her family from Wirraba-

ra, Ros who came for the uke ses-

sion and then stayed for the rest

of the evening she enjoyed it so

much! We think she’ll be coming

again. It was great to see the

Canty’s again and Sco5 Balfour, a

wonderful musician who was vis-

i8ng from Alice Springs.

The Australian Heritage spot led

by Sco5 and Ron, had many peo-

ple join in on instrument or with

voice for the shearing songs -

Ryebuck Shearer and The Lachlan

Tigers. Haven’t heard those for a

while so it was very upli?ing to

hear a few tradi8onal Aussie bush

songs again! I remember as I’m

sure you do too Ron has shared

with us in previous heritage spots

how many of these tradi8onal

Australian songs came about as

“local” versions of tradi8onal

Irish, Sco@sh or English songs.

I know how much we appreciated

the performance by Sco5y Bal-

four (Bloodwood – Alice Springs).

People commented on how much

they appreciated his openness in

sharing his musical knowledge

and skill with us – collec8vely and

individually.

February

The month is February. The February birth flower is the violet and the common primrose. The birthstone

for February is the amethyst. It symbolizes piety, humility, spiritual wisdom and sincerity.

February is the last month of summer and love is in the air with

St Valen8ne’s Day on the 14th

– and 2016 is a leap year!!

Legend has it that St. Brigid of Kildare, a fi?h-century Irish nun, asked St. Patrick, the pa-

tron saint of Ireland, to grant permission for women to propose marriage a?er hearing complaints from

single women whose suitors were too shy to propose. Ini8ally, he granted women permission to propose

only once every seven years, but at Brigid's insistence, he acquiesced and allowed proposals every leap

day. The folk tale suggests that Brigid then dropped to a knee and proposed to Patrick that instant, but

he refused, kissing her on the cheek and offering a silk gown to so?en the blow. The Irish tradi8on there-

fore dictates that any man refusing a woman's leap-day proposal must give her a silk gown.

So ladies, if you’re weary of wai8ng for your man to “pop the ques8on” this might be the year to take

ma5ers into your own hands and pop the ques8on to him!

Other significant dates for February:

Chinese New Year February 8th

and Shrove Tuesday February 9th

From Linda 5th Feb 2016

I have now arrived in Spain and am with Javi the bagpipe player. We are getting together today with a French songwriter and gui-tarist from Brittany to have a party in the campo at my friend’s place. Hope to post up some videos of that later. When I was in England before going to Celtic Connections in Glasgow I had a bit of a musical journey. Staying in Lee on Solent opposite the Isle of Wight I thought of the song ´Three Drunken Maidens from the Isle of Wight, then I went to London and while walking on the Embankment thought of Ewan McColls song ´Sweet Thames Flow Softly`´ then on the bus passing through Manchesterr I thought of his song ´Manchester Rambler and in Salford ´Dirty old Town´and finally, Í belong to Glasgow´¨´

Tumby Bay session on Sunday was amazing including Joseph Ingram (Ex - Tumby/ Poonindie) who is

now an award winning classical pianist & recently performed in the Nau8lus Theatre. Also Robin Hardy, a

uke player from UK, visi8ng his son's family in Port Lincoln - The word is certainly ge@ng around! Mercedes

& her Dad, Trevor, were there too along with Joseph's parents (Graham with guitar).

RFDS Fundraiser – Tumby Bay Saturday 27th

February

Several CFC members and regulars are making their way to Tumby Bay for the annual

RFDS country music fundraiser. Noel Smith is a great stalwart of this event, organizing it

annually. Barry Dennis and John Lecner will be providing music for the masses. A talented

yodeller, Lorna Downey from Queensland is also appearing – so if you love your country

music, Tumby Bay would be the place to be on the 27th

!

Mill Co)age 150th

birthday – Twilight Picnic on the Park – Flinders Park, Flinders Highway

5pm-10pm. The Accidentals and Fudge will be performing sets during the event. Should

be great.

Please let Bec know if you or another CFC member has been performing “out and about” and we can share with

others. If I don’t know what you’ve been up to, we can’t acknowledge it – and we want to be able to

acknowledge the community support our members provide others with through their music or performance.

A message from Angela Cordon – Experts by Experience Project Officer, Country Health SA:

It is with great excitement and pleasure that I am finally able to share that Mentally Fit EP’s Mental Health Week event

“Side Show Alley” has been named South Australian Community Event of the Year (along with Port Lincoln City Council’s

Australia Day Community Event of the Year).

Side Show Alley was a huge part of our 2015 Mental Health Week celebra8on – showcasing the partnerships between

government and non-government services, community services and groups, private prac88oners and businesses.

2015 Community Event:

To celebrate Mental Health Week in 2015, Mentally Fit EP coordinated a circus themed event “Side Show Alley” held on

the Port Lincoln foreshore on 9th

October. The small band of community volunteers in partnership with numerous local

services wanted to host an event that was free, fun, informa8ve, inclusive and accessible, that appealed to a wide age

group, promo8ng and educa8ng our community about mental fitness and wellbeing.

Over 1000 people, young and old, enjoyed the atmosphere that featured local businesses, government and non-

government agencies who provide mental health support and services in our community. The community came out in

force to support each other showcasing the importance of mental health and wellbeing.

Local musicians, Rotary, face painters, the Cellar Folk Club, businesses, alterna8ve therapists and government and non-

government agencies all volunteered their 8me and materials for our community to enjoy a fun day.

Mental health is everyone’s business. “Side Show Alley” provided an opportunity to start genuine conversa8ons,

offered friendship, support and alterna8ves to people in our community affected by mental illness.

*Note: Those with long memories will remember that the 2006 "S8nky Creek Folk and Music Fes8val" organised by the

Cellar Folk Club won the same two awards, and started a trend for the next couple of years of Port Lincoln events also

receiving the South Australian Award.

Congratula8ons to Angela and Kirsty Traeger who were instrumental in organising this event that the Cellar Club was

proud to support and par8cipate in.

Bloodwood Long 8me folkies from the Territory’s Red Centre. Bloodwood have their own brand of Aus-

tralian bush music winning them acclaim around the country and the world and a wealth of experience

gained and shared with the Australian folk screen over many years. Don’t miss this last chance to be

part of a Territory legend

Bluetongue Bush Ceilidh (UK/Australia) Bluetongue brings the experience, energy and broad appeal of

the current UK ‘e-Ceilidh’ scene. Some of the best dance musicians from the UK and Australia, well

versed in social dance on both sides of the globe, have pulled out all the stops to bring the energy of

rock and funk to bush dance. In 2013 the band played at the Na8onal Fes8val in Canberra, receiving

comments such as “…best dancing I’ve done in Australia” (Andy Stafford, Chippenham Folk Fes8val,

UK).

Company, The Boas8ng two Australian Bluegrass champions on guitar, fiddle and banjo, The Company

has a passion for high-energy original and tradi8onal acous8c music. The playing and singing is crisp,

melodic and soulful. In concert you witness the band’s virtuosity but also a wry humour and engaging

camaraderie. “The Brisbane-based quartet is at the pinnacle of the Australian acous8c country scene.”

David Costello, Courier Mail.

Conchillia Conchillia draw on a whole world of inspira8on to create a new sound, unpredictable and

delighYul, pulsing with vibrancy and vitality. With a dash of French cabaret, a samba beat, or a calypso

flavour -they wrap their lyrics in global beats to create something new, shimmering with luscious, tune-

ful appeal. “The selec8on of instruments and voice are the perfect match……wow…..just wow”. 5/5

stars – EP review by Music SA for Bside Magazine

Guitar Cases Band, The Original outlaw country and folk influenced blues from Canberra’s hardest

working band. Andy Daniels’ vocal delivery is like no other. Andrew Tatnell complements Daniels’ per-

cussive style on resonator guitar with sweet melodies on Fender electric and slide on his self-made ci-

gar box guitar. The talented Ang Perusco adds bristling blues harmonica, acous8c guitar and backing

vocals, and the Master Percussionist Red Dog Herbert keeps the ouYit smokin’ on bongos and cajone.

Sco5 said Bloodwood were reforming for an appearance at the Na8onal Folk Fes8val in Canber-

ra this year (24-28 March). If you have the opportunity to head over, it is so worth the trip!

You’ll have your socks knocked off with the range and calibre of performers – tradi8onal and

contemporary sounds, through to Bluegrass, alternate folk all by na8onal and interna8onal

ar8sts. I went with my sister in 2009 and loved it. See the Folk Fes1val info elsewhere in this

newsle2er.

Again we experienced some original songs by some members. The “tongue in cheek” Facebook

song by Rene was a bit of a fun highlight. It never ceases to amaze me the talent we have at our

club. We had 21 people who performed/ played at some stage during the evening which was

terrific.

I hope some people will be considering entering the FAME Awards this year with their original

songs. The FAME (Film and Musical Entertainment) Awards are run by the Port Lincoln City

Band and sponsored by a number of businesses and organisa8ons within Port Lincoln. This will

be the 5th

year – and they just keep ge@ng bigger and be5er.

See you at the Cellar in February! Bec
