WELCOME!Over the past few months, I have been speaking very publically about how the new Kamloops Centre for the Arts will provide inspiring new opportunities for young people to thrive and grow. Dedicated classrooms, rehearsal halls, music rooms, and workshops will give space for students to creatively learn in the arts education programs of local organizations. The dozens of plays and events hosted every year by the complex’s three theatres will entertain, inspire, and educate young people, transforming learning into an experience that will stay with them.Tonight’s play, Café Daughter, is an example of how theatre can give life to facts. A book may teach us those facts, but a play takes the audience on a communal journey of sharing stories with which we identify, even if the characters or story are removed from our own experiences. Café Daughter’s story of Yvette Wong is inspired by fact (real-life Canadian Senator Lillian Eva Quan Dyck’s early life), and the bi-cultural story on which it is based is a common one on the prairies and across Canada. Multi-talented Tiffany Ayalik’s thoroughly compelling one-person performance brings the story out of the history books and onto the stage in vivid and dramatic detail. Through this process, we gain intellectual knowledge, but we also further emotional understanding, acceptance, and harmony in our community. For young people, this is particularly important. I have the pleasure of seeing thousands of area students sit rapt while watching our productions every year. We take pride in knowing that many of them will be profoundly affected and their view of the world positively altered by their experience at the theatre.I am sure you will find Café Daughter to be such a play. It shows there is a little bit of Yvette/Lillian in all of us: passionate, hopeful, sad, pragmatic, curious, and ambitious. No matter our background, her story is an inspiration to us all.

SOME FEAR THE FUTURE. OTHERS DRIVE IT.Live today with a love for tomorrow. Here’s to hitting the fast lane while skipping the gas lane. Here’s to do-ing good and looking good doing it. There’s no better feeling than arriving in a car as beautiful and sleek as the Honda Insight, except the satisfaction of knowing it’s also a hybrid. This hybrid is on a mission to do good for the earth, and your look. Sporting a wide, powerful stance complete with Honda’s signature fly-ing wing grille and bold facia, the Insight is the perfect accessory to your driveway.
