Student Weekly Book Recommendation
Color Outside the Lines:
Stories About Love
Edited by Sangu Mandanna
This modern, groundbreaking YA anthology explores the complexity and beauty of
interracial and LGBTQ+ relationships where differences are front and center.
When people ask me what this anthology is about, I’m often tempted to give them the
complicated answer: it’s about race, and about how being different from the person you love can matter but how it can also not matter, and
it’s about Chinese pirate ghosts, black girl vigilantes, colonial India, a flower festival, a
garden of poisons, and so, so much else. Honestly, though? I think the answer’s much simpler than that. Color outside the Lines is a
collection of stories about young, fierce, brilliantly hopeful people in love.

Student Weekly Book Recommendation
February is Black History Month
Read one of these new books!
Say Her Name
Poetry by Zetta Elliott
Say her name and solemnly vow
Never to forget, or allow
Our sisters’ lives to be erased;
Their presence cannot be replaced.
This senseless slaughter must stop now.
Award-winning author Zetta Elliott engages
poets from the past two centuries to create a
chorus of voices celebrating the creativity,
resilience, and courage of Black women and
girls. Inspired by the #SayHerName campaign
launched by the African American Policy
Forum, these poems pay tribute to victims of
police brutality as well as the activists
championing the Black Lives Matter cause.
This compelling collection reveals the beauty,
danger, and magic found at the intersection of
race and gender.

Student Weekly Book Recommendation
Lovely War by Julie Berry
A sweeping, multi-layered romance set in the
perilous days of World Wars I and II, where
gods hold the fates--and the hearts--of four
mortals in their hands.
They are Hazel, James, Aubrey, and Colette. A
classical pianist from London, a British
would-be architect turned soldier, a
Harlem-born ragtime genius in the U.S. Army,
and a Belgian orphan with a gorgeous voice
and a devastating past. Their story, as told by
the goddess Aphrodite, who must spin the tale
or face judgment on Mount Olympus, is filled
with hope and heartbreak, prejudice and
passion, and reveals that, though War is a
formidable force, it's no match for the
transcendent power of Love. -Goodreads.com
Goodreads = 4 stars
What the author hopes readers take away
from the book: “I hope they love the characters. I
hope they care for them as I do. I truly believe that
if they do, then my work is done. They have found
what I wanted to share, that these people were
real and were loved and worthy of love. Any other
lessons or historical insights about loss or trauma
that are made along the way come from each
reader’s interaction with the story and will attach
quite naturally to that love.” -

Fun Facts about
Conversation Heart Candy
In 1847, a Boston pharmacist named Oliver Chase wanted to get in on the apothecary lozenge craze .
But they were time consuming to hand make, so he invented a machine that rolled lozenge dough and pressed wafers into perfect discs. This became the first automated candy machine. Oliver quit his job
as a pharmacist and created the New England Confectionery Company (NECCO)- the company to make NECCO wafers. NECCO is no longer in
business, but Brach’s is still making a version of the conversation hearts.

Student Weekly Book Recommendation
One of Us is Next
by Karen McManus
The highly anticipated sequel to the New York
Times bestselling thriller everyone is talking
about, One of Us Is Lying! There's a new
mystery to solve at Bayview High, and there's a
whole new set of rules.
Come on, Bayview, you know you've missed
this.
A ton of copycat gossip apps have popped up
since Simon died, but in the year since the
Bayview four were cleared of his shocking
death, no one's been able to fill the gossip void
quite like he could. The problem is no one has
the facts.
Until now.
This time it's not an app, though—it's a game.
Truth or Dare.
Phoebe's the first target. If you choose not to
play, it's a truth. And hers is dark.
Then comes Maeve and she should know
better—always choose the dare.
But by the time Knox is about to be tagged,
things have gotten dangerous. The dares have
become deadly, and if Maeve learned anything
from Bronwyn last year, it's that they can't
count on the police for help. Or protection.
Simon's gone, but someone's determined to
keep his legacy at Bayview High alive. And this
time, there's a whole new set of rules.

Vengeance By Tomi Adeyemi
After battling the impossible, Zélie and Amari

of nobles with magic ancestry, too.
Now, Zélie struggles to unite the maji in an
Orïsha where the enemy is just as powerful as
they are. But when the monarchy and military
unite to keep control of Orïsha, Zélie must fight
to secure Amari's right to the throne and
protect the new maji from the monarchy's
wrath.
With civil war looming on the horizon, Zélie

Call Down the Hawk
(Dreamer Trilogy #1) Maggie Stiefvater
The dreamers walk among us . . . and so do the
dreamed. Those who dream cannot stop
dreaming – they can only try to control it.
Those who are dreamed cannot have their own
lives – they will sleep forever if their dreamers
die.
And then there are those who are drawn to the
dreamers. To use them. To trap them. To kill
them before their dreams destroy us all.
Ronan Lynch is a dreamer. He can pull both
curiosities and catastrophes out of his dreams
and into his compromised reality.
Jordan Hennessy is a thief. The closer she
comes to the dream object she is after, the
more inextricably she becomes tied to it.
Carmen Farooq-Lane is a hunter. Her brother
was a dreamer . . . and a killer. She has seen
what dreaming can do to a person. And she has
seen the damage that dreamers can do. But
that is nothing compared to the destruction
that is about to be unleashed. . .

Serious Moonlight
by Jenn Bennett
After an awkward first encounter, Birdie and
Daniel are forced to work together in a Seattle
hotel where a famous author leads a
mysterious and secluded life in this romantic
contemporary novel from the author of Alex,
Approximately.
Mystery-book aficionado Birdie Lindberg has
an overactive imagination. Raised in isolation
and homeschooled by strict grandparents, she’s
cultivated a whimsical fantasy life in which she
plays the heroic detective and every stranger is
a suspect. But her solitary world expands when
she takes a job the summer before college,
working the graveyard shift at a historic Seattle
hotel.
In her new job, Birdie hopes to blossom from
introverted dreamer to brave pioneer, and
gregarious Daniel Aoki volunteers to be her
guide. The hotel’s charismatic young van driver
shares the same nocturnal shift and patronizes
the waterfront Moonlight Diner where she
waits for the early morning ferry after work.
Daniel also shares her appetite for intrigue, and
he’s stumbled upon a real-life mystery: a
famous reclusive writer—never before seen in
public—might be secretly meeting someone at
the hotel.
To uncover the writer’s puzzling identity,
Birdie must come out of her shell…discovering
that the most confounding mystery of all may
be her growing feelings for the elusive riddle
that is Daniel.
