FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT

PAGE 3 DSO LEADERSHIP

“THROUGH THE PERFORMANCE OF MUSICAL MASTERPIECES AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS THE DUBUQUE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA IS INSPIRING AND TRANSFORMING LIVES.”

Recently, I was asked, “What is the business of the DSO?” After a moment’s reflection I said, “The Dubuque Symphony Orchestra is in the business of Performance Art”. As I reflect on the 2010/11 season, I am struck by the quality of Performance Art we experienced at every Symphony event. The Symphony continues to perform for large, enthusiastic audiences. More than 6,000 patrons attended regular subscription events and about 2,500 students attended “Arts Trek” educational concerts. The quality of soloists willing to collaborate with the DSO demonstrates the level of artistic achievement we have attained under the able leadership of our music director William Intriligator. The Symphony is without peer in its contribution to human flourishing in our region. Through the performance of musical masterpieces and educational programs the DSO inspires and transforms lives. While we relish past success we will not rest on our accomplishments. In an effort to improve the DSO, the Board is crafting a new Strategic Plan, which will guide us in the next five years as we make decisions on programming, venues and educational initiatives.

Without generous supporters, a highly competent staff, and committed board members the Symphony could not thrive. Generous donors and concert sponsors contributed approximately $365,000 last year. Because ticket sales and program ads only account for 39% of our annual income we depend on these contributions and are grateful for them.

Jeff Goldsmith’s able leadership and the Symphony’s dedicated staff make the business of the symphony seem far easier then it is. My colleagues on the board of directors also merit recognition. Time is a scarce resource and every board member manages to reserve time in their busy schedules for symphony business.

Thank you one and all. Your dedication to the Symphony through giving, attendance, and service motivates and encourages us to press on.

Philip F. Jensen

FROM THE MAESTRO

“WONDERFUL GUEST ARTISTS INSPIRED OUR AUDIENCES, AND THE ORCHESTRA’S FOURTH STAGED OPERA, PUCCINI’S MADAMA BUTTERFLY, MOVED OUR AUDIENCES TO TEARS.”

The Dubuque Symphony Orchestra 2010-2011 concert season was a great success on many levels. Increased ticket sales matched the orchestra’s ever-rising level of musical artistry and excellence.

Wonderful guest artists inspired our audiences, and the orchestra’s fourth staged opera, Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, moved our audiences to tears. Indeed, from the overwhelmingly triumphant ending of Pines of Rome on our first Classics concerts to the dramatic final curtain of Madama Butterfly, the DSO provided an astonishing array of high-quality performances that greatly moved our audiences.

Among our guest performers, we welcomed pianist Antonio Pompa-Baldi, soprano Asako Tamura, classical guitarist Jason Vieaux, violinist Elena Urioste, and the Dubuque Chorale.

Highlights from the repertoire included Bach’s Magnificat and Brandenburg Concerto No. 2, Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony, Beethoven’s Second Symphony, Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings, Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, and Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez.

The DSO also performed several concerts in addition to its Classics Series: the Holiday Pops concerts were very well attended and well-received; the Arena Pops concert featuring the music of Elton John was a high-quality experience for all in attendance; and the orchestra’s annual free concerts for Third Graders had an incredible impact on our area’s youth.

DUBUQUE YOUTH ENSEMBLESThe Dubuque Youth Ensembles (DYE) is an educational offering of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra. The purpose of the DYE is to provide our musicians with an opportunity to play in one of three select musical groups: the Dubuque Youth Symphony Orchestra, Dubuque Youth String Ensemble, Dubuque Youth String Ensemble – Chamber Players.

The Dubuque Youth Ensembles are dedicated to the comprehensive training of talented young musicians in the finest techniques of instrumental musicianship. Through quality literature, dedication to teamwork, and regular exposure to professional musicians, the Dubuque Youth Ensembles strive to provide the best possible musical experience. This includes performing with other talented musicians from Dubuque and the surrounding areas, performing a wide variety of advanced repertoire, and receiving rehearsal and ensemble coaching from professional musicians.

“THE DUBUQUE YOUTH ENSEMBLES ARE DEDICATED TO THE COMPREHENSIVE TRAINING OF TALENTED YOUNG MUSICIANS IN THE FINEST TECHNIQUES OF INSTRUMENTAL MUSICIANSHIP.”

EDUCATION PROGRAMS PAGE 8

EDUCATION PROGRAMS

“THESE PROGRAMS, AT A COST OF MORE THAN $20,000, ARE PROVIDED AT NO COST TO THE SCHOOLS.”

MUSIC IN THE SCHOOLSMusic in the Schools is the name we use to describe several programs in which the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra partners with the Dubuque Community School District and Holy Family Catholic Schools. These programs, at a cost of more than $20,000, are provided at no cost to the schools.

3rd Grade Arts Trek concerts began on March 4, 1988. Four 40-minute concerts are designed to introduce third graders to a symphony orchestra and the instruments and instrument families that make up an orchestra. More than 2,000 3rd graders attend these concerts each year. Maestro William Intriligator visits up to a dozen schools each year prior to these concerts.

Adopt a Musician program began with 3 elementary schools (Bryant, Marshall, Prescott) in February, 2011. Three DSO musicians visited the 4th grade music classes 4 times during the spring to supplement the music education program of the schools. The musician and music teacher worked together to present lessons that helped the students reach the 4th grade standards and expectations in music. The program was a huge success and has been expanded to 6 schools and 5 classroom visits for 2011-2012.
