[ Editors note: Here is an edited transcript of Tim Cooks interview with a news reporter about iPhone sales. ]

In terms of iPhone, we did actually very well everywhere. Id call out two places where it was just off the charts. The U.S. grew 155 percent year over year. Obviously adding Verizon and beginning to offer iPhone to their enormous customer base was key in that. However, as youheard from AT&Ts announcement this morning, AT&T did extremely5. well during the quarter. So the U.S. market grew 155 percent, and thats aboutthree times predicted growth for the smartphone market, which was about 48 percent. Also, wecontinued to be on a tear in China. Greater China saw iPhone sales being up over three times.Almost 250 percent. This increased profit for first fiscal half in Greater China to just under $5

billion, which is up almost four times year over 10 . year.

[What about launching a 4G/LTE iPhone?]

I was asked this question, or a similar question, when we launched the iPhone with Verizon.What I said then, and I still see it as being the case today, and I think you can see this in the

products that have been shipped, is that the first generation of LTE chipsets15 . force a lot of design compromises with the handset, and some of those we are just not

willing to make.

And so we are extremely happy with the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS. Hitting 18.6 million unitswas something much larger than we thought we could do this quarter, and were happy to havegotten it out to three more large carriers.

Our focus has very much been on China. We wanted to understand that market and understandthe levers there. iPhone sales increased three times during the quarter, and in the first half we did

just slightly under $5 billion in greater China in revenue, which is about 10 percent of Apple, to put it in perspective. And it wasnt but a couple years ago25 . that that number would have been less than two. And so its a sea change. Thatscertainly not what I would call a classic postpaid market by any means of imagination. And sowe have some ideas about other countries as well. Im not in a position that I want to share thosetoday. We purposefully put the bulk of our emphasis from an emerging markets point of view, inChina, to really learn, and then were going to take30 . that learning to other markets.

Steve Jobs made a decision to resign from Apple and recommend Tim Cook to be its CEO putshim into the spotlight.

Cook, a small-town football fanatic turned CEO of the world's largest technology company, haslong faced the question of whether he had the same remarkable5. vision as his predecessor.

He now must prove that his technology instincts are as sharp as when he joined Apple in 1998after leaving the once-mighty Compaq, then the world's top PC maker. At the time Apple was

barely afloat.

Cook has led Apple's earnings calls with analysts and carefully guided or rebuffed queries to maintain the company's highly25 . secretive plans for its products.

One of the things Cook shares with Jobs is sheer competitiveness, say associates. "He's not in itfor the fame or the ego or the money. He's in it to win," said Greg Petsch, who was Cook's bossat Compaq Computer in the late 90s.

How Cook got his job is part of Apple legend. As recounted in the Wall Street Journal,30 . Jobs, then newly returned to Apple to reinvigorate the company, had turned downseveral applicants in characteristically brusque fashion, including walking out midway throughone interview.

By Cook's own account, they took to each other instantly, and Cook made his fateful decision. "Ilistened to my intuition, Cook said.

35 . Jobs and Cook have balanced each other ever since. Where Jobs is famous for hisexplosive temper, firing employees on the spot, Cook is described as down-to-earth and soft-spoken. Although operations executives are not generally considered chief executivematerial, Petsch pointed to former Intel chief Craig Barrett's rise to the top from chief operating

officer jobs.55 . "He is very highly regarded internally at Apple," said Ashok Kumar, an analyst atRodman & Renshaw. "From a succession perspective, they could not possibly identify a better candidate. He has a track record to back it up."

Yet there is little doubt that much of the Apple mystique revolves around Jobs. His far-sighted,sometimes counterintuitive approach has guided Apple to a string of triumphs.60 . Although Jobs was involved in strategic decisions Cook has been running the company
