DESCRIPTION
To be held in Melbourne on Friday 7th June 2013. This is the most diverse collection of its kind ever formed, with extraordinary depth of representation of origin countries, including many exotic ones. It features earliest and record frankings, utilization of highest denomination frankings, and interrupted mail. As you browse the catalogue you will find military and POW material, civil censorship items, complex postal routings, many jusqu’a items and a mass of thematic possibilities. Rod’s high profile in the auction industry from the early 1970s onwards often placed him in the envious position of having “first bite of the cherry”, explaining why the overwhelming proportion of what is on offer has not been seen, yet alone previously owned by other Philatelists.TRANSCRIPT

Welcome to Phoenix Auctions Auction No.21
Phoenix Auctions are delighted to offer the Rod Perry Airborne Commercial Mail to
Australasia 1899-1945 Collection, in its entirety.
This is the most diverse collection of its kind ever formed, with extraordinary depth of
representation of origin countries, including many exotic ones. it features earliest and record
frankings, utilization of highest denomination frankings, and interrupted mail. The
abundance of rarities present is reminiscent of that other great collection formed by Rod,
his Grand Prix Victoria (AUSIPEX 84). Rod is fond of saying “When I decide to collect
something, I do tend to go about it with a sledgehammer”. After you have viewed this
auction we are sure you will agree him.
A collection as broad as this offers a wide variety of material which will appeal to many
collectors, and not just the collectors of flight covers. As you browse the catalogue you will
find military and POW material, civil censorship items, complex postal routings, many
jusqu’a items a mass of thematic possibilities.
One example of the preponderance of rarities is provided by the Zeppelin-related content.
Very few collections contain a single example of a commercial Zeppelin article destined for
Australia; the Perry collection has eleven. There are three of the four recorded Hindenburg
carried covers (#196, #742, #945), the latter involved in an interrupted mail incident
following transfer to Imperial Airways onwards service to Australia.
A collection such as this needs to be well illustrated and we have done that by providing an
image for every single lot, surely a first for any postal history auction. It also needs to be
thoroughly cross-referenced and we have provided this with over 9 pages of cross-
referencing. We have also produce a special tabulation of the airlines and aircraft names
mentioned in the description. In fact there are 82 different aircraft mentioned by name in the
catalogue.
Rod’s high profile in the auction industry from the early 1970s onwards often placed him in
the envious position of having “first bite of the cherry”, when material initially surfaced in the
philatelic market place or elsewhere. The acquisition of the lion’s share of the Henry B Smith
hoard, several decades ago, is a case in point. This style of accumulating goes a long way
in explaining why the overwhelming proportion of what is on offer has not been seen, yet
alone previously owned by other Philatelists.
Phoenix Auctions - Friday 7th June 2013 Page 3
The catalogue format for the Perry Collection is our most luxuriant yet, in terms of
proliferation of illustrations of subject lots. Given the diversity of the material, with so many
items in the Philately as Art genre, this was the appropriate manner in which to present this
collection. Many more scans will be found in the on-line version of the catalogue.
The collection is presented in three broad sections:
SECTION 1: 1899-1930: Pre-1931 Experimental airmail services England to Australia.
Arranged in year order. (Lots 1 to 61)
SECTION 2: 1931-1945: Arranged geographically (West-East in spirit of Imperial Airways
England-Australia route, and East-West for Pan Am The Americas flights). (Lots 62 to 846)
SECTION 3: Incidents and Interruptions: Including mail from and within Australia. Arranged
in year order. (Lots 847 to 1096)
The entire collection will be on view at the Phoenix Auctions Stand Nº 194 at Australia
2013, Royal Exhibition Buildings, Melbourne, May 10th to 15th. Rod will frequently be
present at the Stand to assist with questions from collectors.
Rod has generously allowed Phoenix Auctions the discretion to accommodate extended
payment terms to buyers. Contact David Wood or Ken Pearson in confidence prior to the
auction date of 7th June if that offer will assist.

Rodney A Perry
I commenced my philatelic journey in the 1950s, whenmy grandfather presented me with a pile of G.B. 1951“Festival” £1’s, which had arrived on parcels containingparts for his engineering firm in Melbourne. One Poundwas a lot of money to a seven year old and, incurablymesmerized, this introduction to the allure of philatelywould envelop me for the next near sixty years, andcounting.
E.W. (“Ted”) Proud first introduced me to that parallelphilatelic universe, Postal History, when I met him in1973, during my inaugural Le Grand Tour as aprofessional philatelist. Ted suggested that Australia was a largely untapped market forP.H., and I would be unlikely to meet with much opposition if I was to take it on as aspeciality. Wise counsel, which I was not about to ignore. And so it came to pass thatduring the 1970s, at a time when I had commenced constructing my Grand Prix Victoria, Ipursued a second philatelic passion: hoarding world commercial covers/stationery. This Ifound therapeutic, the general entry point per unit was refreshingly modest, at a timewhen items sourced for a mainstream collection could come at breathtaking sums.
It mattered not that I knew little of the finer philatelic points of the hoard I was rapidlyaccumulating, that could evolve with time and, besides, in the interim I was having funonce again being a collector of whole world. It was nostalgic revisiting what were oftenfamiliar stamps, some of the type which had once graced the pages of my schoolboyalbums. Seeing those same stamps, but on intact postal articles for the first time wassomething of a revelation.
My airborne mail collection is essentially an adaptation of the whole world collectingconcept, the destination of Australasia being the common denominator which binds itlogically. This concept has universal applications, and it is to be hoped that it may beexported broadly, and more will be inspired to consider taking on collecting inwards mailto their chosen country, or geographic region.
The collection now presented evolved from the hoard garnered during four decades ofaggressive acquisition. An exciting aspect in constructing it was the ever present thoughtthat for most items in the collection, I was the first to lay philatelically appreciative eyes. It’s a fact that most of the items in this catalogue have not been on the market in over 30years; many have never been offered at auction or by other traditional means.
Particularly pleasing to me is the depth of material I was able to garner in two categories:the pioneer airmail routes era, when daredevils fearlessly took to largely uncharteredskies, and landed in virtual paddocks; and interrupted mail, where nature, human error, and just about everything else which could go wrong, conspired to thwart the mostmeticulous of planned schedules. Very satisfying was the amateur detective work“finding” many of the latter, involving researching tens of thousands of covers of thesubject period, most handled by a philatelist for the first time in their existence. Of manyitems offered, just that one example from a given origin to destination has thus far beenfound. The thrill of the chase remains omnipresent.
This collection, which I regard as my favourite since forming my Victoria, expresses alsomy fondness for studying the use of stamps for the purpose for which they were primarilyintended; to service postal needs. Higher aggregate frankings, particularly thosedeploying highest denominations, were enthusiastically sought.
I take this opportunity to thank Ronald M. Lee, with whom I have been involved in recentyears in the production of a fine forthcoming publication on the subject of Australasiancommercial airmail, Distance The Last Frontier, David Collyer, Malcolm Groom, BrianPeace and Kendall Sanford for their kind assistance and advice, and of course TedProud, who got me “started”.
I hope new caretakers will derive as much pleasure from their new ownership as I have.

My Auction 21 Bidsheet.
My Auction 21 Bidsheet is the most important part of the website when you have placed bids in
the auction, because it provides everything you need to manage your bidding. With this screen you
can change your bids, add limits to ensure you don’t overspend, enter Credit Card details or other
special instructions, and, it always shows you the current status of your bids.
The lot is highlighted when you have the top bid so it is easy to see the current situation with your
bids.
As well as being able to modify your bids there is a +5% button which increases your bid to 5%
above the current starting price. At the bottom of this webpage there is also a field to globally
increase all your bids by any percentage amount. Very useful when your bids are all way below the
starting price or you want to give yourself that extra level of safety.

How To Get The Most From Our Catalogue[These notes are offered as a guide to understanding the information given as symbols.]
1. Firstly, we have the lot number. All lots have at least one illustration on our website, and many will have multiple illustrations.
2. The second column contains a symbol, which represents the item(s) in the lot:** Mint, unmounted o.g. * Mint, mounted o.g.V Used, Very fine. F Used, FineG Used, Good H Used, HeavyU Used, quality unspecifiedW Unused, no gum D Piece
* Cover, card or S Stamp (“Postmarks” lots)PS Postal Stationery B Booklets or Booklet Panes
3. The 3rd column contains the general description of the of the lot and should be self-evident with one exception. When acatalogue value is extrapolated the value is followed by a ↕, e.g. $2000↕. Typical extrapolations are 40% of the cataloguevalue for hinged mint when the catalogue only provides values for MUH, 200% for MUH when the catalogue value is for minthinged.
The following notes apply specifically to postmark description.
Whenever possible postmarks will be described in full, except that the top portion of a postmark is only spelt out when itdiffers from the post office name or requires some clarification. Bracketed shaded text within a description indicates thatthese characters cannot be read, while greyed characters are hard to read or are only partly present, as is the case whenpart of the postmark is on the edge of a stamp. Very large or small letters are represented by large and small fontsrespectively; small fonts are particularly used to indicate the presence of small nylon wheels in the datestamp. The followingexample illustrates these points:
'[POST] OFFICE/21DE86/GARAH'.
After the forscription of the postmark we will indicate the overall quality of the cancel with a bracketed 2 character code. Thefirst character is A-D where A is a fine clear postmark through to D which is barely legible. The second character is a numberfrom 1 to 4 where 1 is complete including all the frame through to 4 where only 25% or less of the cancel is visible. Forexceptional strikes we will further qualify the quality code with a ‘+’ and for items which are light etc the code will be qualifiedwith a ‘-’.
For postmark lots the condition of the postmark is the most important aspect of our descriptions. Minor defects in the stampor cover are mentioned only when the value of the item is significant. Naturally, major defects will always be described.
4. The symbols in the second column, and the illustrations of lots, form part of the lot description.
5. The last column is the estimate. The reserve is almost always 75% of the estimate and bids below the reserve will notusually be considered.
6. No GST is added to the hammer price. The vendors have accepted responsibility for any tax payable.
7. We use the following standardised abbreviations:o.g. original gum opt(d) overprint(ed)d/s datestamp cds circular datestamph/s handstamp mss manuscript; handwrittenERD earliest recorded date LRD latest recorded dateo/o opened-out RLabel registration labelM/S(s) miniature sheet(s) PPC picture postcardimpt imprint mtd mountedprovl provisional wmk watermarkLDL large dateline (postmarks) SDL small dateline (postmarks)TLC,TRC,LLC,LRC Top Left Cnr, Top Right Cnr, Lower Left Cnr, Lower Right Cnr
