Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) are screening the fields

of applications and the economical and technological chances

of Additive Manufacturing (AM) for their own production

environment. While large companies invest considerably in

the innovative technology to open new business areas or

to improve existing products and processes, for many SMEs

there is a bottleneck in terms of skilled 3D-printing specialists

or of capital for investments in AM systems. Subsequently

SMEs run the risk of lacking competitiveness, especially for

metal processes.

This marks the starting point of the collaborative AM group

formed by the Fraunhofer ILT and the Aachen Univ. of

Applied Science (FH Aachen). It combines the knowledge

of the FH Aachen, especially in 3D applications, with the deep

understanding of generating metallic parts and the detailed

knowledge of machine’s architecture of the Fraunhofer ILT

specialists.
