AAD2010 MESSAGE BY MINISTER OF TRADE & INDUSTRYHONOROUBLE DR ROB DAVIES
The Industrial Policy Action Plan 2 (IPAP2) emphasises the importance of the Aerospace and Defence sector as a critical generator of new technologies and a key to future innovation in South Africa. One of the key objectives in this sector is to ensure the beneficial integration of South African producers into global supply chains. Several South African suppliers have managed to achieve recognition and confidence from the Original Equipment Manufactures (OEMs) as reliable suppliers of components and parts, including advanced materials. These are among some of the key capabilities that the South African Aerospace and Defence has already developed.
A vibrant and growing aerospace and defence industry requires active collaboration between government, industry and international partners. This African Aerospace and Defence Trade Show offers testimony to the evolving and growing relationship between South African and international companies. The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) has initiated several programmes since AAD 2004 through our Aerospace Industry Support Initiative (AISI) which aims to support competitive aerospace clusters and promote firm-level integration into global supply chains.
This year, a total of 27 Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) will be showcasing their products and services at Africa’s premier Aerospace and Defence Trade Show, courtesy of the dti. As we move towards the knowledge economy, it is critical that the development of a strong sub- tier supply chain be high on our agenda to promote growth and sustainability in high technology sectors. Two more initiatives are also currently underway. These are the development of an Advanced Manufacturing, Aerospace and Defence cluster in Centurion (CAV), and the National Aerospace Centre of Excellence (NACoE), based at Wits University. These initiatives both supported by the dti, will provide additional industry capabilities to the sector.
The aerospace and defence industry is an exciting industry that holds a lot of potential for our country. I wish all participants in AAD 2010 every success and invite you to visit the Small and Medium Enterprises Aerospace Pavilion in Hall 4, supported by the dti.

Africa, amongst others.• The AISI actively works with government, academia and industry to ensure growth of this significant industry.
HISTORY AND ROLE OF THE AISI
The Aerospace Industry Support Initiative (AISI) is a fully government funded mechanism which exists to support the local South African aerospace industry. The AISI aims to support the local industry in its drive to become an active and valued player in the global aerospace industry.
In 2005 the Aerospace Industry Support Initiative became fully operational, under the project management of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), with specific emphasis on supply chain improvement, technology advancement, coordination, promotion and awareness.
The role of the AISI as an industry support mechanism is to:
• Increase the contribution of small enterprises in the economy• Significantly enhance Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE)• Raise the levels of direct investment overall, as well as in defined priority sectors• Increase market access opportunities for and export of South African goods and services• Contribute towards building skills and technology platforms• Improvement of the local industry competitiveness• Ensuring that new technologies are taken up by industry through an active process of innovation.
Deliverables of the AISI:
• LINKAGES Creating the necessary relationships with global stakeholders as a means to acquire the necessary technologies and skills
• LEVERAGES Move beyond the static client-contractor-type relationship to a new paradigm in which the client is seen as a partner.
• LEARNING Use these partnerships to improve the existing technologies whilst simultaneously mastering the production and process technologies needed to build new sustainable platforms.
9
THE AISI VISION
Through the collective leadership of government and industry, upgrade, propel and position the South African aerospace industry to be firmly integrated as part of global supply chains.
