EDITORS’ NOTES BY JOANNE SHUM & REA GOSINE EDITORS’ NOTES BY JOANNE SHUM & REA GOSINE Hi all!

They’re baaaaackkkkk!! They being Rea and me for Round 2 of being your AALT Technician Co-Editors for another year. (What did we agree to get ourselves into again, Rea?) With fall just around the corner and the start of the new school year, I hope that everyone is having an awesome summer so far and vacation is a much needed break from the usual activity that occurs in the library.

I had a wonderful vacation spending 10 days on the East Coast of Canada. I’ve never been there before until this trip and I can foresee another trip back that way. There are many more things I want to see! Halifax is definitely a must see again on my list as well as Peggy’s Cove and all of Prince Edward Island. The day we were on the island, it rained the entire time we were there but I made the most of it including playing in the waves of the Atlantic Ocean at Cavendish Beach in a torrential rainstorm. It was COLD! Brrr…. I also saw the National Archives and Library in Ottawa. I really wished I could have gone in but since we were on a bit of a tight schedule, I got to see it…from the outside and across the river. I also saw the Summerside Public Library in Summerside, PEI. It was closed for the day but I took a few pictures of the outside. If I had my way, I think I would have made a stop to visit at least one library in every place we visited! My brother would have probably killed me for that but he was good for at least a library or two.

Anyways, it’s a supersized edition of the AALT Technician we’ve got for this summer issue. We’ve got Conference wrap up, a new board of directors, and the usual happenings in the library world! Have an awesome rest of the summer! Until the next issue…

Joanne

6 AALT Technician Summer 2010

Ch -ch-ch-changes (a la David Bowie)

For many people, even those who don't have children or work in education, the real New Year is September. August is the speedy downhill slide into autumn, the days are already getting shorter, the mornings are just a little crisper and if you park outside there's dew on the windows of your car, an ominous harbinger of the frosts to come. Maybe because in most parts of Alberta the transition from spring to summer is so slow, the sharp delineation between summer and fall makes us more aware of the passage of time.

It's an odd time of year. The sharper weather stirs us from our lazy summer mindset and prods us to tackle projects that having been idle while we basked in the summer sun. While we don't have the same sense of life or death urgency our pioneer ancestors felt at the approaching winter, we still have a feeling of having to complete several tasks before the snow makes life .... interesting.

Fall can also be a time of melancholy, as attested to by many, many poets. For all that we live in a constantly changing world, for some reason autumn seems to be the season that heightens our sense of the changes that are driving us forward, whether we want to or not. If you have children, buying back to school clothes almost always brings home the fact they have grown considerably (or at least their FEET have!!) since May. Even if you aren't swept up in the back-

to-school frenzy, the stores are all making sure you know the seasons are changing with their flyers and displays. New fall fashions! Halloween displays! Christma..no really? Christmas? Come on Wal-Mart, cut us some slack here!!

Anyway, for those of us on the AALT board, this is a time of big changes as well. May was quite a few months ago and “conference euphoria”, as I like to call it, has worn off and we're left with the fact that we volunteered to be the ones who will steer AALT through the coming year. Like all changes it can be quite daunting.

It's also daunting to realize that in order for AALT to remain a vibrant and viable organization that continues to serve it's members, it has to change as well. We can't just rest on the laurels of those who have gone before us, each new board has to look at how best to fulfill AALT's mandate in our rapidly changing world of information technology. While the basic infrastructure usually remains fairly intact, each new year and new board has to implement some changes to ensure that AALT continues to be not just useful but excellent.

7 AALT Technician Summer 2010

With that in mind there are several changes ahead for AALT. We'll be starting the process of re-vamping the web-page, finding and hopefully implementing new ways to deliver professional development opportunities above and beyond our outstanding conference, improving communications with the other library organizations that are out there and also examining ways to raise AALT's public profile.

When you look at all of those goals, suddenly the time until the next board takes over doesn't seem quite as long! It promises to be an exciting year full of positive changes and we're looking forward to sharing the journey with you, our AALT members.

Happy New Year everyone!

The AALT Journal Submissions contest is open again for another year!

This year we’re running TWO contests:

Ooku : The Inner Chambers (Manga)

Publisher: VIZ Media LLC.

By Fumi Yoshinaga

Volume 1 ISBN: 978-1421527475

Volume 2 ISBN: 978-1421527482

Volume 3 ISBN: 978-1421527499

Volume 4 ISBN: 978-1421531694

In an alternate universe, a strange disease that only affects men has literally wiped out most of the male population in Japan leaving women to pick up the pieces and take over the roles traditionally held by men. 80 years later, the disease still continues to plague the male population and the social structure of Japan has changed from a patriarchal society to a matriarchal society where women hold all the power set during the Tokugawa Shogunate.

The Ooku was the inner sanctum of the Tokugawa Shoganate where the emperor’s mother, wife, concubines and children were housed. It was the emperor’s personal harem. This area was off lim-its to everyone except the emperor and the only way in is through a hallway called the Passage of Bells because as the emperor passes through bells are rung signifying his arrival. In the alternate

universe, males that survive the “red faced pox” are pampered and sold into brothels to become breeding studs. Only the rich and powerful are allowed to have husbands.

This series is actually a 10 volume set that is not yet complete in Japan but the first four volumes have been translated into English. The first volume starts out with Mizuno, the son of a samurai family who gives up his life to enter the Ooku so that his sister can afford to marry a husband and because he can’t bear the thought of the girl that he loves being married to another man. When he enters the Ooku, he is just a lowly page to the others inside. His good looks and athleticism make him the envy and jealousy of the others inside the ooku. In the second part of Volume Mizuno catches the eye of the emperor who has a mind of her own and refuses to be held by old traditions and customs.

UNDER THE COVERS … A BOOK REVIEW BY JOANNE SHUM

9 AALT Technician Summer 2010

I actually found the first volume when it showed up on the processing truck at the library. I ended up reading the first volume while completing the processing truck and the storyline intrigued me. The style of writing is written in Old Shakepearean English with a lot of thee’s thy’s and thou’s so it takes a little bit of reading to get used to. Each vol-ume is set during a different time period within the Toku-gawa Shogunate rule so it jumps from the present shogun to the first female shogun to rule when the disease first struck. This manga is definitely not for the younger crowd. The tone, setting and characters are more directed to-wards the adult crowd and it shows in the drawings and the situations that the characters are placed in. The books are slightly larger in size and come shrink wrapped from the publisher so prying eyes can’t get a glimpse of what’s inside.

So far, I’m enjoying what I’m reading partially because I’m a history buff and the Tokugawa Sho-gunate period was one of my favourite parts of Japanese history to study. The whole spin on what if Japan was ruled by women take is something different too. It kind of makes you wonder how differ-ent Japan could be if women were allowed to rule the throne. I like how at the end of each volume there are cheat notes that go into more detail about real dates and times in Japanese history or ex-plain the plot devices used to help create or push the story forward. I’m anxiously awaiting the arri-val of volume 5 but it’s going to be awhile before that gets translated into English!

AALT MEMBERSHIP REVITALIZATION PROJECT

BY SARAH STEPHENS

I t’s an exciting time for AALT; new board, new ideas and a new influx of members!

You may have heard that as a part of AALT’s commitment to rebuilding our membership we are launching a four year Membership Revitalization pilot project this fall. The project consists of

AALT providing students enrolled in an Alberta library technician program with a free membership. At the end of the pilot period the effectiveness of the program will be evaluated; how many students became paying members of AALT, how did the networking opportunities provided by AALT meet the student’s needs, etc. The outcome of these findings will determine whether or not the program will be permanently adopted.

Here are the details of the AALT Membership Revitalization Project:

WHO: All students enrolled in the Library Technician programs at SAIT and GMU (not including distance education students) WHAT: A free AALT membership for the duration of their program to be renewed yearly

WHEN: Starting fall 2010. The pilot project will conclude at the end of the 2014/2015 school year

WHERE: Alberta

WHY: Each year a number of fresh, new students enroll in library technician programs in Alberta and we would like to ensure that these students are exposed to the valuable resource that is AALT. The hope is that students will continue on as regular members of AALT after graduation. Having a larger membership base will also mean new ideas and new bodies to sit on committees and on the board. This pilot project will also provide excellent networking and mentorship opportunities for students and for library technicians.

HOW: The Membership Committee will oversee the pilot project with the assistance of the SAIT and GMU student reps. We will keep track of student memberships and the rate of retention after graduation.

11 AALT Technician Summer 2010

The AALT Board of Directors is very excited to be involved in this exciting new project. We welcome feedback and suggestions from the membership. Please feel free to contact Sarah Stephens – Membership Director at [email protected] with questions or comments.

FINDING QUALITY INFORMATION ON THE INTERNET BY KRISTIAN MCINNIS

When looking for authoritative information on the Internet, users - and even information profession-als - often start their search with one of the major search engines. However, evaluating the quality of the results of a Bing or Google search can be quite daunting. Fortunately, there are resources that make searching for information much easier.

Academic Earth (www.academicearth.org)

Academic Earth hosts videos of lectures by univer-sity professors. While it makes money by connect-ing visitors to online credit courses, most of the lectures are freely available for personal viewing. They are conducted by experts and cover a wide range of subject areas. Another good source for less academic videos is blinkx (www.blinkx.com). This aggregation service indexes how-to videos, news and more.

Koders (www.koders.com)

Want to save time with coding and scripting? Koders can help. This site contains a searchable data-base of open source code in many programming languages. Licenses are usually clearly laid out at the top of the code so you can copy, change or adapt ethically.

Creative Commons Search (search.creativecommons.org)

In keeping with using information ethically, Creative Commons is a great tool for finding pictures and other media to adapt for projects. Creative Commons uses simple, natural language to outline ap-propriate reuse of its licensed content.

13 AALT Technician Summer 2010

WolframAlpha (www.wolframalpha.com)

Finally, WolframAlpha is actually a computational engine. What that means can be illustrated with a few examples: enter a pair of cities and it will build a comparison table of demographic and eco-nomic data. Give it a geometric formula and WolframAlpha will plot a graph, show derivatives and list properties. Or provide a few notes, and you'll see the musical notation, a keyboard display, and a player for an audio clip of the entry.

WolframAlpha draws its data from government statistics bodies, directories, handbooks and other authoritative sources. It's a great tool for quick facts, tabular data and calculations.

These resources (and more) are also listed on SAIT Library's Find Websites: library.sait.ca/findwebsites.asp

THE SECRET LIVES OF LIBRARY TECHNICIANS BY REA GOSINE

For the 2010 summer issue of the AALT Technician, we’re featuring an interview with Shawna Manchakowsky. Shawna is a former Journal committee member and a former classmate of myself and Joanne’s. We’ve been hearing great things about Shawna’s work at EPL and thought we would take the opportunity to find out more about her!

Hi Shawna, can you tell us where you’re from?

I was born in Trail, BC, but consider myself an Alberta girl. We moved to Red Deer, Alberta where I started kindergarten until half way through grade eight. (My dad was with the R.C.M.P. so we were transferred in the middle of the school year. I remember we moved on a Friday after school. I had hoped to get a week off of school or so to settle in but my mom made me go to my new school the very next Monday. I had moved cities and didn’t even miss an afternoon of class, much to my chagrin!) We moved to Hinton, Alberta, where I graduated high school. My dad was transferred to Morinville, Alberta and my parents chose to live in St. Albert, Alberta. This is when I decided to go to the University of Alberta, so I moved to St. Al-bert with them. They have since been transferred four more times and my dad has now re-tired, but I have stayed in St. Albert for the past fifteen years.

Shawna and her daughter Jessica

15 AALT Technician Summer 2010

Sounds like a lot of moving around; I remember my family doing the same thing! Well we know you went to Grant MacEwan for the Information Management & Library Technology program - did you go to school for any other programs?

I graduated from the U of A in 2000, with a Bachelor of Music and a Bachelor of Education degree. I taught high school for two years but it wasn’t for me. I always wanted a job where I’d be happy and I was pretty shocked when I found out teaching wasn’t it. Even though it was very scary at the time, I decided to leave the teaching profession and find something that I loved.

Wow, that’s great you were able to recognize fairly early that you were going to need to make a change. Why did you decide on the library tech program?

I decided to enroll in the library tech program because it seemed to blend with my interests of helping people, learning and instructing.

So was it what you expected?

It was what I expected and more. It was the best decision I could have made. The program really prepared me for my job that I do now.

Right – you work at EPL, correct?

I work for Edmonton Public Library. I am a part-time permanent Library Assistant at the Woodcroft Branch. It will be three years in October. This past year I took on a one year, full-time temporary position at Woodcroft as a Library Assistant and it’s been such a great experi-ence! I am truly happy in my job and love what I do.

That’s terrific you found a job that makes you happy! What kind of things do you do there?

The main focus of my job is customer service. I help our patrons get what they need. This could be a new membership, help on the computer, how to find a book, how to put a book on hold, or help them find what to read next. I answer any question a person can think of! Other jobs I’m responsible for are ordering stationery for the branch, presenting story times to ages 0 – 12, doing the daily cash, doing the month-end cash, student page coordinating, and my favourite job, teen and adult book club leading!

16 AALT Technician Summer 2010

Could you tell us more about the book clubs? I remember talking to a friend who mentioned your book club and he said it was a great club and he had a great time each time he went.

Oh, thank you! It’s the best part of my job. I run the adult and teen book clubs at Woodcroft and they are so fun! We meet once a month at the library. As the host, I supply the coffee/tea and cookies for the adults and pop and chips or popcorn for the teens. A common misconcep-tion is that I pick the books for the groups to read, but I don’t. It’s completely up to the group to present a book idea to everybody and then the club will vote on it. My only requirement is that there are enough copies in the library so everyone can take home their own copy. The adults meet for an hour and a half and the teens meet for an hour. I usually start with any an-nouncements I have, then go around the table and let everyone say what they thought about it. After that, everyone can jump in with their own comments. This way it ensures everyone gets at least one chance to speak. I end with a book draw, where I have one or two new books to give away. I also have next month’s book ready to hand out, so they can take it out right away and get a jump on reading. I love the book clubs as I always learn something new and find it so neat to hear a different perspective on the book.

Do you have any tips for starting up your own book club and what to do on the first meeting?

For your first meeting, have a couple of book suggestions ready. Even better, have a list of possible book choices the group can pick from. A simple vote will get the first selection made. That very first meeting, you can go around the table and talk about a book you have recently read and enjoyed. This will be an ice-breaker and a chance to get to know your fellow members. For the first few meetings, have some discussion questions ready. This will be good to refer to in case there is a lull in the conversa-tion. With coffee and tea, a good book discussion ready, and a bunch of enthusiasm, and you are all set!

Outside of work, what are your interests?

I love to read, watch movies, go to the beach, travel, go to concerts (but only country music ones!), and have supper with friends.

Have you travelled to many different places?

I love to travel. I haven’t been to nearly enough places to satisfy my traveling desire! How-ever, I have been lucky enough to visit England, France, Spain, Hawaii, Haiti, Jamaica, Grand Cayman Island, the States and Mexico. My favourite spots are hot destinations where I can lay on the beach.

17 AALT Technician Summer 2010

Wow – that’s a lot of travelling! What are you doing when you’re not working at the library or seeking out hot destinations?

I can be found playing, feeding, disciplining, instructing, or just plain hanging out with my three year old daughter, Jessica. I also teach piano and have seven students this year who range from six years old to adult. If I’m not doing that, I’m checking email/Facebook, walking or just hanging out.

Sounds busy! Thanks for spending some time with us Shawna! On a final note – we’re intro-ducing the AALT Board in this issue with a few “If” questions instead of doing their bios this year. How would you answer the “If” questions:

1. If you could possess one supernatural ability what would it be?

I love dreams when I fly. I think flying would be super-fun, supernatural ability to have.

2. If you could memorize one book from history in its entirety, which book would you want it to be?

It would probably be the Bible, as there are always so many references to it.

3. If you had to sell your soul for one thing, what would it be?

I don't think I could be convinced to sell my soul for anything.

4. If you could have a year any place in the world, all expenses paid, where would you go?

Shawna and her co-worker Julie Cheng

18 AALT Technician Summer 2010

It would in Mexico. I would love to practice my Spanish and actually learn to speak it well, in-stead of hacking my way through it as I do now with Spanish speaking customers who come into the library.

5. If you could have chosen your own first name, other than your current one, what would it be?

It would be ‘Alexandria’. It just sounds so fancy. It could be formal with people who don’t know you, but your close friends could call you ‘Alex’. ‘Al’ would be ruled out as it’s too boy-ish, while ‘Alex’ would be kind of mysterious and sassy on a girl.

AALT CONFERENCE 2010 WRAP UP

BY JANELL BAUER-HURDMAN & KIM MARTIN

Rebuild, Renew, Recharge – Conference 2010 did just that!

The 36th annual conference kicked off to a great with our President’s Reception “Brought to you by the Letter R.” And no, the “R” did not stand for rain though it may have seemed that way! Delegates got into the “R” theme and there was everything from rockers and royalty to recyclers and even a red ribboned lady. Greetings were brought to the group by our special guest, LAA Past President, Renee Reaume. Prior to the President’s Reception, a lucky few were had the opportunity to learn more about the ins and outs of Microsoft Excel 2007 during the AALT Pre-Conference session hosted by St. Mary’s University College.

Our Friday morning keynote, Sheri-D Wilson captivated us with her poetry and spoken word prowess. She was refreshing in her style and drew our creative sides. One person called her, “So interesting and eye opening – Incredibly inspiring!” Prior to the keynote address, we also had a surprise White Hat Ceremony for outgoing AALT Presi-dent Kim Martin who will be moving to Cape Breton in two years. Kim was honoured with a White Hat from Jim Lyall, an authentic cowboy and representative from Tourism Calgary and she pledged to spread the word about Calgary to all those she meets. The Friday sessions had something for everyone but one of the most popular was the Al-berta Education School Library Initiative session presented by Judith Sykes. This session was sponsored by the AALT School Library Committee and discussed the future direction of school libraries. Fri-day evening was capped off with the Ghost Tour of Inglewood which was definite a scary event...for the organizers! Although we missed connecting with our ghostly tour guide, library technicians being the

resilient group that they are, regrouped in the Hose and Hound Pub and had a great evening anyway!

Saturday morning brought us the wonderful and incredibly witty author, Will Ferguson. Reminiscent of Stephen Leacock, Will kept conference delegates entertained as he told stories about everything from his beginnings as an author and research for his books to his unique interview with CBC Radio’s Shelagh Rogers. During the Annual General Meeting, plans for the four year student membership pilot project were presented and met with overwhelming support of the membership in attendance.

Saturday evening’s awards banquet recognized some of our outstanding colleagues and ended on a toe tapping note thanks to the energetic musical stylings of the Heebee Jeebees. The Heebee Jee-bees had delegates jumping out of their seats and joining in on all the fun including helping some library technicians and all the men in the audience discover their hidden singing talents! (The lion was definitely not sleeping that night guys!)

The conference concluded Sunday morning with brunch speaker author Simon Rose. Simon’s books have great appeal for teens, pre-teens as well as adults and his enthusiasm for his stories is contagious. His love of history and little known ex-citing concepts like time travel are frequently found in his novels.

There were many popular sessions over the week-end covering a wide range of topics. Some of the favourites included Cheater’s Guide to Catalogu-ing, Post Secondary Research Tips and Strate-gies, Ergonomic Tips to Improve your Work Com-fort, and Belly Dancing: discover your beauty within, which left people dancing the hallway show-ing off their new moves!

The Vendor Showcase was well received again this year and we had the largest turnout of vendors in AALT conference history. The variety of vendors ensured that every delegate had the opportunity to walk away with something beneficial, as well as the opportunity to make new valuable contacts. Watch for some interesting changes to next year’s Vendor Showcase!

Heebee Jeebees!

Thank you to all of our sponsors and vendors. Your support helped make this year’s conference a great success. Thank you also to our awesome presenters and conference committee members all of whom were integral to making this conference remarkable. Finally, thank you to all the confer-ence delegates. Your enthusiasm, interest, and professionalism have again made the AALT Confer-ence an amazing and noteworthy event. We were sad to see you leave but we hope that you took with you some refreshing ideas, renewed connections, and perhaps one or two really terrific AALT memorabilia or Silent Auction bargains. We look forward to reconnecting with you next year in Ed-monton! In the meantime, remember to continue to Rebuild, Renew and Recharge!

CLA UPDATE BY KAREN HILDEBRANDT

CLA LTIG Highlights from 2010 CLA Conference

Twenty-five people attended the CLA LTIG Networking social supper on Thursday, June 3 at the Riverside Bistro for an evening of food, drinks, laughter, and even some swag to take home. We can now claim that we have gone international as not only did we have representation from Alberta, Sas-katchewan, Ontario and Newfoundland, we also had a special guest, Janette Telford, from Sydney Australia joining us.

Fifteen people arrived bright and early Friday, June 4, to attend Interest Groups breakfast meeting. We began with Frank Mussche, President of Libramation, presenting the CLA LTIG Award of Merit to Karen Darby. The meeting continued with a recap of the LIT Program Chairs/Coordinators AGM and the news that the final draft of the document, “Guidelines for the Education of Library Techni-cians” has been sent to the Executive Council for approval.

I had the pleasure to once again facilitate the LIT Program Chairs/Coordinators AGM. It is always wonderful to hear the wonderful successes about the programs as well looking to the future and where the programs may be headed.

I am honoured to continue serving as convenor for the Library Technician Interest Group and look forward next year’s conference in Halifax. The LIT supper event has become a real highlight for many of the LITs attending the CLA conference and I hope to see you there next year.

Karen Hildebrandt, LTIG Convenor.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A C.O.W. BY JOANNE HOWELL

My husband, while searching the Internet for a part-time driving job for himself, came across an en-

try that he thought I would find amusing. The job ad read: “Part-time Bus Driver/Library Assistant

required”. Such an unusual skill set was indeed amusing and so intriguing that I investigated further.

Once I saw the accompanying photo of a school bus painted like a cow I was hooked. I knew this

was the job for me! So, armed with a Library Technician diploma and the AALT-inspired belief that I

could do anything, 19 years experience running school libraries, and 15 years association with Big

Sisters, I proceeded to the interview. As for the

‘inconvenience’ of my having zero knowledge of bus driv-

ing, I simply thought: “Why on earth can’t I learn that,

too?”

At the interview with the Centre for Family Literacy, a non-

profit organization that is “committed to helping build, de-

velop, and improve literacy in Alberta”, I was relieved to

learn that I didn’t require a special license to drive the bus

because no passengers are allowed during transit; I

would just require some training before I went solo.

The Centre offers family and adult literacy programs in-

cluding Learning Together, Book Buddies, Rhymes that

Bind, and Books 4 Babies, as well as adult tutoring, and

works to help parents support their children’s literacy de-

velopment. Learn more about the Centre on their web-

site: www.famlit.ca.

28 AALT Technician Summer 2010

The C.O.W. (Classroom on Wheels) bus operates four days a week in different areas of Edmonton,

stopping for 1½ hours in high density neighbourhoods. Children up to age six must be accompanied

by a parent (we are NOT a babysitting service or a playschool). A facilitator comes on board at each

stop to run the program which is a fun time of stories, songs, action games, and whatever else

comes up! Parents sit with their children and participate in the activities; after all, we are encourag-

ing the development of literacy skills which are first initiated in the home.

Joanne behind the wheel of her C.O.W.

The bus itself is roughly divided into thirds. The first part is the entryway with boot racks and coat

hooks, a desk and storage. The second part is the lending library with floor to ceiling bookshelves.

The third part has uncovered windows for brightness and carpeted floor with big cushions for com-

fortable sitting. There is also a small table and benches for interactive play between parents and

children. Stuffed animals abound, including the familiar Clifford, Franklin the Turtle, and the

Berstain Bears, plus lots of games and puzzles for babies and young children.

My job involves driving the bus to the various sites, then greeting and helping the families as they

board. I check books in and out and shelve them. I keep statistics on circulation and attendance,

sign up new participants, and assist the facilitator in any way I can. Once my duties are finished I

join in the activities, too!

29 AALT Technician Summer 2010

Even when working in my ‘office’ at the front of

the bus you will find me singing along with the

group at the back! At each child leaves, I give

them a stamp on one hand and a sticker on the

other. And once I’ve driven back to the parking

site, I vacuum and tidy up.

I love getting to know the children and their par-

ents; relationships develop quickly and often I’m

in a position to truly help a child or a parent. On

less busy days I have read a story one on one

with a child and my day is made. On one occa-

sion six members of the Old Strathcona HOG

group drove up on their Harley-Davidson motor-

cycles and came on board to present us with a

cheque to support our program! Oh yeah, once

in awhile the bus tries to break down on the Yel-

lowhead!

Lucky me, I have this amazing job in my retirement: books plus children plus relationships plus new

skills plus money. It’s like being a grandmother with a little library technician and adventurer thrown

in! I sometimes forget as I’m driving along what a very silly vehicle I’m driving – then I notice people

pointing and laughing and I laugh right back and wave!

MANGA IN THE MAINSTREAM

BY ADELINE PANAMAROFF

There are as many genres of manga as there are in the main stream Western novel industry. Manga can cover plot lines any where from mystery, real life circumstance, to horror or fantasy. In this buffet of literary choice a reader can find rich references to historic or modern Asian cultural and religious practices.

A few examples of this can be found in the popular shojo manga Fushigi Yugi : Genbu Kaiden, by Yuu Watase. Set in ancient China, a young priest-ess quests for seven warriors who will help her summon a protective god. The priestess uses a historic Japanese weapon, a naginata, a type of spear, in most of her battles. In Pre-WWI and into the 1920s, many girls and women were trained in the techniques of the naginata. This training was in preparation for the possibility that the woman might have been the nation’s last line of defense.

In a similar story, Inu-Yasha, by Rumiko Takahashi, a modern day Japanese middle school student is pulled back in time to feudal Japan. Here Kigome encounters many Shinto inspired spirits. The popular dog spirit, Inu-Yasha, along with the fox spirit, Shippo, and wolf spirit, Koga, are among the many of characters Kigome meets, along with elemental spirits like thunder & lightning, water, and even a flea spirit. Kigome makes frequent use of a long bow in her adventures in ancient Japan. Even today it is com-mon for Japanese students to train with bow and arrows, as an extracurricular school activity.

In the light hearted manga Kamichu!, by Hanaharu Naruko, a small timid, middle school girl, Yurie, turns into a god one night, as she sleeps. As a new member to the Shinto world of gods and spirits, Yurie meets many different characters. Along the way we meet the patron god of the town, spirits of sunken ships, and even more obscure spirits like the spirit of yakisoba, a Japanese noodle dish, and even a spirit that cleans up the litter from the streets.

The Korean manga, Bride of the water god, by Mi-Kying Yun, a young peasant girl is sacrificed to a water god. Instead of dying the human girl is taken into the world of the water god. Here she meets other spirits and messengers of the gods’ realm. The girl learns what happens when gods get sick or weak and can not fulfill their duties to the human realm.

31 AALT Technician Summer 2010

If the nature spirits and gods are not respected by humans, drought or illness most likely will befall them. If the nature gods do not come to the aid of the humans who respect them, their spiritual supporters may drift off, and the spirits’ powers may wan.

Being exposed to the material culture of Japan and the spiritual beliefs of the Shinto religion, through Japanese manga maybe in an informal approach to learning about a people and their their culture. Yet with such a rich pop culture as can been seen in Japan, it is only natural that all aspects of Japanese culture would find its way into the popular medium of graphic novels. The best ways to learn is through fun imaginative ways, where the learning does not feel like work at all. Graphic novels engage visual and literary senses. On multiple levels the graphic novel form is a valuable tool, to learn about art styles, cultural and different visual ways to communi-cate a story or a message.

AALT PRESENTS AWARDS AT ANNUAL CONFERENCE BY KIM MARTIN At the 36th AALT Conference Awards Banquet held at the Carriage House Inn in Calgary, Alberta on May 29, 2010, the AALT Advocacy Award, Dewey Award and Student Bursary Awards were presented.

The AALT Advocacy Award, which recognizes an individual who is a strong supporter and promoter of library technicians and the library technician profession in general, was presented to Sandi Tough from Legacy Library Services (LLS). Sandi has been an avid promoter of library technicians for many years as well as an active supporter, participant and sponsor of the AALT conference. As

Sandi says, “14 years of serving automation needs in libraries taught me among other things that I love the library industry.” Three years ago Sandi had the opportunity to work on the “other side of the desk” when a temporary position opened up at Bellerose Composite High School in St. Albert. The three months turned into thee years and she is still happy to be working at the school library with library technician Linda Schwam as her mentor.

The Dewey Award recognizes the efforts of a Board member who has gone above and beyond the call of duty. The year it was presented to Marketing Director Melanie Belliveau. During the past year, Melanie established the AALT Facebook page and kept members and the library community in general aware of AALT and other library activities and issues through emails and postings. By the end of the term, her email count was well to the thousands!

Grant MacEwan University Student Bursary Award winner Janet Visser with President Kim Martin

In recognition of academic achievement and potential contributions to the library technician profes-sion, outgoing AALT President Kim Martin presented the AALT Student Bursaries to Grant MacE-wan student Janet Visser and SAIT Polytechnic student and outgoing AALT SAIT Student Board representative Jonathan Wainwright. Janet received her award at the CLA Library Technician Inter-est Group dinner in Edmonton during the CLA conference.

Congratulations and thank you to all of these amazing individuals!

SAIT student Bursary Award winner & past AALT student rep Jonathan Wainwright with President Kim Martin

I am a student at Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton, enrolled in Information Management and Library Technology. The program is wonderful, and I am pleased to report that I achieved the Deans List distinction. The program faculty are excellent and teach practical, applicable knowledge. The other students are extremely welcoming. I would definitely recommend the program to anyone inter-ested in working in a library setting.

I really enjoy learning the new information that comes with helping oth-ers research. I learn things that I never would have thought to look up for myself, such as eel reproductive habits. The search tools we were taught in class really come in handy, as sometimes the information you need is hidden deep inside the internet.

I am also considering going to the University of Alberta for the Masters program, but that will be in a few years. My dream career would be to work at the Bruce Peel Special Collections Library, but I think I would have to wait for one of the lovely ladies to retire first.

In my free time I comb garage sales to add to my collection of vintage sewing patterns and1960-70s schoolbooks, complain about movie adaptations of books, and wait for my interlibrary loans to arrive at the library.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT BURSARY WINNER … AMANDA THOMAS

Congratulations Amanda!

2. If you could memorize one book from history in its entirety, which book would you want it to be?

2. If you could memorize one book from history in its entirety, which book would you want it to be?

Since my goal would simply be to recall a great book and beautiful writing and not to try and impress people with obscure quotes at cocktail parties, I would probably just pick one of my favourite books - Unless by Carol Shields.

3. If you had to sell your soul for one thing, what would it be?

Our world, free of systemic violence.

4. If you could have a year any place in the world, all expenses paid, where would you go?

I'm going to go big here and pick a HUGE place. I would choose to spend a year in Africa over all other places in the world. Spending a year in the continent that is the birthplace of humanity, filled with such extremes and natural wonder would be a dream come true. Africa is such a massive place, so diverse and complex, exciting and unfamiliar I would have to take a whole year to experi-ence it properly.

5. If you could have chosen your own first name, other than your current one, what would it be?

I honestly can't imagine being called any name other than the ones I already have.
