DENTAL TECHNICIAN
WHAT’S THAT?
DENTAL TECHNICIAN?
A DENTAL TECHNICIAN…
• “The Dentist makes the teeth, right?” Wrong. More often than not that is the job of a Dental Lab. Dentists can make the teeth, but better quality comes from a dental tech.
• We make Veneers, Crowns, Bridges, and Full Mouth Sets
• Veneers are like Caps. Bad tooth/teeth sanded down and cap is glued on with adhesive (e.g. Epoxy, FSV/Flex-pro). Crowns are the same except they’re for molars.
• Bridges are usually around 3 teeth “bridged” together. May include 4-5, maybe more but not very common.
• Full Mouth is exactly what it sounds like in all honesty.
• We can also make dentures and retainers (orthodontic appliances)

WHAT IS REQUIRED
• Technically speaking, a college degree is not required. Some of the best technicians never when to college specifically to be a dental technician. It is actually better to find work under a good experienced technician.
• Still smart to get college, perhaps a dentistry major or a business major.
• CDT – Certified Dental Technician
• Earned by proving extensive, working knowledge through a series of tests and mock cases
• Many courses and apprenticeships available to be taken throughout the country
IT MATTERS…
THE ART OF PERFECT IMPERFECTION
• The fact of the matter is that your teeth are not white and, like the rest of the human body, they are not perfectly aligned.
• Making crowns and veneers requires very close and careful shading and painting.
• The shades may include blues and purples. It may even include green.
• In order to make it look like teeth, we must shade the porcelain in a way that creates the illusion of transparency.

THE DIGITAL AGE
• The Digital Age of the Dental Industry is a mixed bag. It has the potential to hurt or help technicians in the future.
• But teeth will always need a human touch in the creation process.
