AAR 4546 ZEB DesignDesign of Zero Emissions Buildings

Course Director: Assoc. Professor Aoife Houlihan Wiberg+ Mr. Per Monsen MNAL

The design tasks will involve two parts, Task 1 + 2.

Task 1 will involve a critical case study analysis of two on-going ZEB Pilot projects; • Task 1a Powerhouse 1

(New build, Plus Energy Office building) • Task 1b Powerhouse 2

(Renovation, Plus Energy Office Building)

Task 2 will involve an on-going ZEB Office concept model where the students will be expected to use the model to perform/test various parametric design studies.

Learning outcomeThe students learned to design architectural projects with netzero emission ambitions, integrating strategies for energy, materials and users into high-quality architecture.

Learning methods and activitiesLectures and presentations; design studio guidance; oralproject presentations and discussions with teachers, externalprofessionals and classmates.

COURSE OVERVIEWThe programme consists of an integrated design project (AAR 4546 ZEB Design - 15 credits) andtheory course (AAR 4817 ZEB Theory - 7.5 credits) spread over one semester.

AAR 4817 ZEB TheoryZero Emissions Design Theory

Course Director: Assoc. Professor Aoife Houlihan Wiberg

The objective of this theory course is to introduce specificaspects of ZEB theory and modeling tasks to examine itspractical application to the parallel design project (AAR4546).

Learning outcomeThere are many challenges facing the design of buildings with(net) zero emissions and the objective of this course is toevaluate if current methods can be integrated to meet thesedesign challenges.

Learning methods and activitiesThe course is a taught course based on a series of weeklyhalf day (lecture/workshop/feedback) sessions to encourageinteraction, discussion and to encourage a group atmosphere. Each lecture/workshops focuses on specific design issuesrelevant to achieving ZEB in the parallel design course.
