About the Ph.D. dissertation
Atrial fibrillation is a serious health burden. The patient perspective of living with atrial fibrillation is important for the quality of care, be-cause the patient is the only one who experience the events in their journey as a whole.
Aiming to explore the complexity and magnitude of the context re-lated to the patient perspective, based on three papers in a case study design, this dissertation explores the patients’ quality of life, lived experience and self-reported health in the journey of living with atrial fibrillation.
By providing insight into the synergy of applying both qualitative and quantitative data sources in order to tell the full story about the patient perspective, this dissertation is an important contribution to the future development of care and treatment of patients living with atrial fibril-lation.
A missing link between sectors reveals a precarious situation for pa-tients with a potential risk of losing dignity and their safety to be put at stake. A person-centred and holistic perspective on the journey as an ongoing process of transition and across healthcare organisational boundaries is required for providing patients living with atrial fibrilla-tion with the needed individualised care and treatment. This perspect-ive is essential in order to respect patients’ ever-changing perspective between illness and wellbeing, uphold dignity, balance responsibility and strengthen the patient’s autonomy.
Knowledge from this dissertation is important across organisational sector boundaries in the healthcare system, for healthcare profession-als and researchers engaged in caring for patients living with atrial fibrillation, and other chronic conditions.
