President's MessageHappy 45th Anniversary Poway-Penasquitos Branch! Wow, that's amilestone to celebrate. According to our inhouse historian, JacqueSturtevant, 30 motivated women came together to start this branch inOctober 1971. We are lucky to still count on three of those charter memberstoday--Jacque Sturtevant, Janene Cook and Jan Rightmer. Thank youladies for giving birth to our branch that is still going strong today!

The Board has finalized our fund raising goals for the year. We have setambitious but doable goals to raise $5400 for Tech Trek to send 6 campers,$5400 for Reentry Scholarships-awarding $1800 to 3 recipients, and $1200

to AAUW Funds for national support of grants, research, legal and developmental programs. (Thesenumbers are based on past years' efforts.) We plan to raise these funds through membership supportduring our fall campaign, corporate donations, Cover to Cover and some new and fun events tostimulate getting outside guests involved in helping us to achieve these goals. Watch for wine andbeer tasting events, home-hosted small group gathering events, and our new "loose change" programthrough interest groups. We hope to see you at each or all of these events and want to encourage youto bring your friends, family and countrywomen to come too!

In addition to these new and old events, we are also proud to announce that we are official partnerswith Miramar College! Thanks to the efforts of Marie Dye, Sheri Bardot, Marilyn Scheininger, JoanThompson to make that a reality! They are already sponsoring a Voter registration on campus andwill be offering a seminar on Wage Negotiations and tapping on our membership to participate incareer panels in the future.

Happy Hikers - Saturday, September 3Join the Happy Hikers Saturday October 8 in Palomar Mountain State Park for abeautiful 3.5 mile hike in Lower Doane and French Valleys. We will hike throughforests of oak, pine, cedar and fir, meadows supporting wildflowers and many birds. We saw deer in three locations on our last visit. This is the hike a few of us did lastMay, but had to miss some of the highlights due to inclement weather. We will beable to visit the historic water weir and complete the hike on the picturesque Doane

Valley Nature Trail.

Those interested can make a short visit to the historic Boucher Hill fire tower, meet the volunteerForest Fire Lookouts who are manning the tower during fire season, and enjoy the spectacular views.Lunch will be at Mothers Kitchen, just outside the park. This hike through Doane and French Valleysis rated moderate by Afoot and Afield (Jerry Schad). While it is mostly gentle terrain changes, you arehiking at an elevation of 4,500 feet which adds a challenge, and there are two small easy streamcrossings. You may want to bring your hiking stick. Below is a description, with photos, of a hike thatis the same as ours.

We will meet at 8:00 and carpool from the west end of the parking area of Ranch Bernardo TransitCenter, 16715 West Bernardo Dr. Driving time to the park is approximately one hour ten minutes.Entrance to the state park is $8 per car ($7 for a senior) If you would like to attend please email PatDowning at [email protected] cell 714-321-3955 Please include your cell phone number. This isjust one of the incredible trees we saw in May.

Happy Hiking!Marie

Garden GalsThe Garden Gals field trip to Myrtle Creek Botanical Gardens and Nursery in Fallbrookwas a blooming success! Our tour guide, Kim, wound us through the butterfly garden, rose arbors, plantation house (which can be rented for events up to 75-100 people)regaling the history of the grounds and buildings along the way. We created our ownclay pot gardens (some with fairies!), had a lovely outdoor lunch with Myrtle berrylemonade & pie and shopped in the garden store. Members brought five guests to join us and learnabout AAUW. Hopefully some may join us as members!

Our next outing will be November 4 at Bates Nut Farm in Valley Center where we will have a hay ride, back scenes tour, shopping (just in time for the holidays!) and lunch. There is a 15 person minimumfor this event, so it is another time to invite friends and potential members! Until then...See you in thegarden!
