That is the map of Placer County! On February 18

th the Branch hosted the first annual Women of

Distinction luncheon at Whitney Oaks Golf Club. While honoring two wonderful women leaders in South Placer County we attracted non-members of AAUW and business and community leaders.

You ask, so why is that so important? As the Branch has, over the years, tried to raise funds from sources other than our members we have found that the Branch simply wasn’t a known entity in the larger community. This has affected us in many ways such as the ability to secure a table at community events or to receive corporation/business support for our many programs. Recently we have been able to increase the number of stories about our various projects in the local press and many member volunteers help to distribute flyers/posters to advertise our branch programs. Though all these efforts do help promote our activities, we do not gain recognition from the community “movers and shakers.”

The Women of Distinction event honored Leilani Fratis, Chief Executive Officer of the Placer County SPCA and Carol Garcia, Vice President of Community 1

st bank and Mayor of Roseville. Both were

recognized for their work and leadership within Placer County and neither knew anything about AAUW in Placer County. Well, now they do! Important also were their friends and colleagues who came to honor them and who also knew nothing about our Branch and our efforts. We also honored and gave an award of appreciation to Raley’s for all the years they have given us free conference room space for our meetings. Their representative Jerry Scott stated " he had not wanted to come to this women’s luncheon, but after being there and hearing our story he was very happy to have attended.” In fact, he asked if men can join the organization!!!

Our speaker Kathy Brenzel, Garden Editor of Sunset Magazine, delivered a powerful message about mentoring women, being flexible in life, and taking chances. She was so right on! She received an award for her Mentoring Women in Media. Our Branch needs to now build on this successful event by developing more efforts to connect with the leaders in Placer County. We have a great story to tell… and when people hear it they will be more willing to give us their support. Our first ever raffle was a huge success, again attracting generous donations from local businesses and branch members. I thank Lora Finnegan for securing the speaker and the Marketing Committee for posters. My strongest appreciation is to the four members who worked tirelessly each day for the past two months making Women of Distinction a huge success. They are Barbara Fraivillig, Kathy Kort, Marilyn Gregory and Joan Mackey. (Unfortunately, Joan is not in the picture.)

Speech Trek 2016 Finalists Impress the Audience By Michele Stark, Chair

Polished speakers and a classy venue! On February 5, five students representing five different high

schools advanced to the branch’s final round of the tenth annual Eleanor Stem-Allen Speech Trek

contest. This year’s venue was the ballroom at Lincoln’s Orchard Creek Lodge. Partnering with the

Sun City Community Forum, Speech Trek’s largest audience of 110 people listened to the finalists

address the topic “Gender Bias and Inequality.” They skillfully addressed its impact on people and

how organizations such as AAUW can address the problem.

The Speech Trek contest is fully funded by Gray Allen and his family as a tribute to his late wife

Eleanor Allen, who was a long-time branch member and who initiated the Speech Trek program in

our branch. David Allen gave a very inspirational tribute to his mother Eleanor.

President Sanchia Spandow Finalists:( L.to R.) Ashley Isaac, Skyler Vega,

Caitlyn Jordan, winner Caitlyn Jordan, Sarah Murphy, and Thomas Ebrahimi

David Allen

First Place, $750: Caitlyn Jordan, a senior at Roseville’s Oakmont High School, plans to attend UC

Berkeley, major in English and have a career in journalism. Caitlyn is president of the school Speech Club,

president (and founder) of the Creative Arts Club, and she also serves on the Placer County Youth

Commission. Caitlyn now has a chance to be a competitor at the AAUW Speech Trek State Final, held

at Convention in San Mateo, Saturday, April 16.

Second Place, $500: Sarah Murphy is a junior at Whitney High School in Rocklin.

Third Place, $250: Skyler Vega is a junior at Rocklin High School.

Runners-Up, $50 each: Thomas Ebrahimi is a senior at Roseville’s Woodcreek High School.

Ashley Isaac is a junior at Del Oro High School in Loomis.

A big thank you to all the many volunteers who gave their time and expertise at both the semi-final and

the final round. Much gratitude to the Speech Trek committee for elevating the contest to a new level. A

special thank you to the Sun City Community Forum Task Force, especially, Peter Beckett, Paul Gardner,

and Judie Panneton. Thanks also to these judges for the final round: Placer County Supervisor

Robert Weygandt, Gail Berberian, Paul Gardner, Janice Marcum, and Doug Stark.

Our AAUW Partner, Sierra College, has started the new semester with many activities for girls on campus. A new Women’s and Gender Resource Center is about to open. Under the leadership of Rachel Sexton, who attended the 2015 AAUW National Collegiate Conference for Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL), the center will be a site for a comprehensive array of information about issues affecting women. A girl visiting the center will discover notebooks full of on-campus and off- campus resources, such as rape counseling, child care providers, self-help information on many topics, and an array of brochures from community organizations offering services to students. AAUW literature will also be in this center. Students are being hired and trained to staff the center. Rachel has made us aware of the needs of low-income students for personal items that they may not have funds to purchase. The Branch Board voted to give members the opportunity to donate items to be given out at the Resource Center. Three members have offered to collect the donated items, which will periodically be delivered to the center:

Lincoln – Sue Orvis; Rocklin – Sue Miller; Roseville – Linda Howard. This would be a good project for AAUW Neighborhood Groups! Items needed: Travel sizes of shampoo and conditioner; tampons; pads; soap/shower gel; razors; toothbrushes/toothpaste/floss; tissues; hand sanitizer. Also baby diapers and wipes; school supplies such as pens, pencils, sharpies, highlighters, notebooks, staplers. “Rise Up” Day at Sierra was celebrated on February 16. Held nationwide, Rise Up focuses on campus sexual violence. After speakers pointed out statistics that show campus violence rising, the group moved to Dietrich Theater to view the movie “The Hunting Ground,” a documentary in which survivors tell their stories about rape crimes on U.S. college campuses, their institutional cover-ups, and the devastating toll they take on students and their families. Branch members staffed a table at this event.

Reviewing “The Conversation” Branch Event

"The Conversation" Program: The Next Chapter of Life--What will that be like? Why Should I Make a Plan?

A panel of experts on planning for one's elder years spoke at the January 30th free branch program. Lorraine Cournoyer, a branch member and past president, staged a dialogue with her daughter, Michele Parmley, role playing what a conversation might be like between parent and adult child--from these perspectives: the mother who at first refuses to talk about having to make life changes as she gets older, and then the mother who has to convince a grown daughter that they need to talk about those changes that "none of us want to think about." Guest Panelists covered a wide range of topics and answered audience questions about: the range of living environments if one cannot live alone, the benefits available to war-time veterans or their un-remarried spouses, the reasons a senior citizen might need a licensed fiduciary to assist with all aspects of one's financial life, the costs of a variety of types of elder care, and many more. Handouts were available, and each of the speakers offered to assist for free in any way those who could not attend one of the best programs the branch has sponsored. Or if attendees wish more information, they may also contact these women for free assistance. See below for their contact information. Thanks go to Kate Tiongson, chair, for putting together this informative event and to her committee for all of their assistance. Pam Murphy, Life Options, 916-847-3838. This has been a banner year for Roseville South Placer Branch’s Tech Trek program. The middle school teachers from our area put their heads together and nominated the best and brightest their schools have to offer. We are happy to report that this year we have twenty-four young ladies from twelve area middle schools vying for one of the coveted six spots in the Tech Trek STEM camp at UC Davis for July 2016. Student applicants and their parents have until March 1st to submit their application and certification forms to the Tech Trek committee in order to be eligible for the interview process. Our committee will convene for an all-day session on March 9th to go over each student’s application, and make sure the parents have signed their certification indicating their approval for their daughter to attend camp. It’s an exciting process for these young ladies; many have never been away from their parents before, so this is a learning experience for both students and parents. Also new this year is the “no cell phone” rule. In years past, the campers were allowed to bring their phones, and use them for one hour every night. However, this year, there will be absolutely no cell phone use allowed. This is not a rule that only Tech Trek camps adhere to; many different types of camps around the country are reporting that they are completely doing away with young campers’ cell phone usage in order to give young people a chance to truly interact with the world around them in a way they might not do when they go about their everyday activities with cell phones firmly in hand at all times. We who haven’t grown up with a cell phone as an extra appendage probably cannot comprehend how this will affect these young ladies, but I assure you, in this age of ubiquitous cell phone use, it can be quite a factor in their decision to attend a summer camp. The chosen nominees and their parents will then be invited to participate in the interview process scheduled for Saturday, March 19th, at a place and time still to be determined. The committee both looks forward to the interviews and dreads the end of them, because then we have the monumental task of selecting only six girls from all the extremely qualified applicants who present themselves to us. Tech Trek committee members definitely enjoy the interview process, and getting to know a little about each young lady as they sit for their interviews. As you can imagine, we would like to send them all to camp! The selection process is a difficult one for us, and we appreciate your good thoughts as we make our selections. If you would like to be a part of next year’s committee, or would just like more information on Tech Trek in general, please feel free to contact Kim Lillard. Please also go to our website at: http://rosevillesouthplacer-ca.aauw.net/projects/trek/, or join us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/AAUWRSP/?fref=ts.

Let’s Say: “Kudos To” ~ ~

A branch feature

This month we’re saying “Kudos To” Jackie Lamb and Committee

for all their efforts to make the first Women of Distinction event

a great success!

Do you know someone who has gone above and beyond to help the branch—

perhaps someone who has missed being recognized?

Send your recommendation with examples to Communications Director, Susan Hall.

In Memoriam

Polly Rowland's husband, Herman "Stormy" Schauer died in February after an illness. Stormy was a branch member, the only male in this branch, and he served as chair of Public Policy when Polly was branch president. He was also a contributor to many branch events. Long-time branch member Jane Corbett lost her husband, Bob, in February. The family plans a small gathering in his memory. Our condolences go out to both of these branch members.

The good news is: We have a Nominating Committee!

Three outstanding women with experience and integrity and knowledge and service of branch leadership. All three are past presidents and have held many other positions during their years in the branch. They are: Michele Stark, chair, and Joan Mackey and Diane Madden. We wish them well in their work and look forward to learning of their nominations for officers for 2016-2017.

From AAUW Washington Update for February 12, Lisa Maatz,

Vice President of Government Relations, has given us a brief rundown on how the AAUW holds accountable our Congressional representatives and senators. Here is her report: "On Wednesday, AAUW celebrated the release of the AAUW Action Fund Congressional Voting Record (CVR) for the first session of the 114th Congress. This voting record provides information about elected federal legislators on the priorities that are critical to the Action Fund’s mission.

For the 114th Congress, we scored congressional members on legislative priorities based on AAUW’s Public Policy program adopted by AAUW members in areas such as equal pay, education, campus sexual assault, campaign finance, human trafficking, and reproductive rights. Senate members were scored on five key pieces of legislation including their co-sponsorship of the Paycheck Fairness Act which would strengthen federal outreach and enforcement efforts, the Survivor Outreach and Support (SOS) Campus Act which would develop steps to end sexual assault on college campuses, and the Democracy for All constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United. A total of seven Senate members received a 100 percent rating from AAUW Action Fund. The House of Representatives were scored on similar legislation including co-sponsoring the Paycheck Fairness Act and Democracy for All constitutional amendment. House members were scored on seven legislative actions including opposition to the Student Succeeds Act which fails to hold states accountable for closing achievement gaps, the Scholarships for Opportunity and Results Reauthorization (SOAR) Act which would expand school vouchers in Washington D.C. and give public funds to private institutions that do not have to follow Title IX requirements, and the Defund Planned Parenthood Act which would limit women’s access to health care. 59 members of the House of Representatives received a 100 percent rating from AAUW Action Fund. We encourage you to check out the AAUW Action Fund Congressional Voting Record at https://www.aauwaction.org/voter-education/congressional-voting-record/ and see how your senators and representatives scored on issues impacting women and families. The CVR is one of the many ways that AAUW holds legislators accountable for how they vote and is an important tool to advocate for our priorities."
