Natural disasters are a part of the everyday reality for many urban inhabitants and they have increased in frequency and magnitude in the past decades. In September 2009 Metro Manila suered the most severe ooding in 40 years, and it is regularly hit by typhoons and ooding.

How should architects work with urban shelter design? The studio aims to give understanding of the processes of urban shelter design in countries with dierent cultures, climates, socio-economic conditions, architecture and built environment. The course deals with issues such as social inclusion, urban compactation and ecological footprint. The inuence of policies of international organi-zations such as the United Nations, World Bank, regional and national development organizations is also discussed.

The Challenge of Rapid Urban Growth in many cities of the South is one of the largest challenges within urban development of the 21 century. Today more than half of the world’s population lives in cities, and a billion of them are poor. Architects need to engage in urban development to design liveable environments in cities also for the urban poor.

Urban ShelterThe course deals with urban shelter design in extreme environments and in an international context with focus on the conditions of the urban poor and how to bridge the urban divide. High quality design in urban shelter is a tool for better homes and better cities.

The rapid urban population growth in Asia and Africa has an impact on global economic and environmental development. The global growth of urban population by 180 000 persons per day corresponds to almost two cities the size of Lund. In Africa there are more people living in cities than in the USA and Canada together. These growing cities are managed by politicians and their experience, knowledge and visions are crucial for the urban design.

The studio is divided into three phases:1. The preparatory studies will be carried out during week 4 – 7 and focus on preparation of eld studies and on learning about the Philippines, its development and current challenges. Facts about the Philippines and dierent tools for data collection such as SWOT, focused group discussions and inter-views are presented. Interviews to be carried out with dierent stake-holders are prepared. Literature review, seminars and sketch assign-ments are organized.2. The eld study in Metro Manila will be carried out during week 8 – 10 and allows site studies, data collection and analysis of the complex reality. Visits are made to actors in urban shelter, such as national government, municipal govern-ment, private sector and NGOs to understand the design process and the role of the architect. Interviews of residents in dierent housing areas are conducted to understand living and housing conditions. Design concept is to be presented for partners in Metro Manila before returning to Lund.3. Applications and design in LundThe main task is to design a disaster resistant housing area for lower middle income groups in Quezon City, the largest city of Metro Manila. Population density, land use and aordability should be reected in the sustainable urban design. Design proposals both at neigbourhood level and house level are to be presented.
