Student WelfareWe have a wealth of experience looking after young children staying away from home and our friendly, caring and supportive staff are here to support both our Abberley Hall students and their parents through this exciting time.

A new experience away from homeFor many of our Abberley Hall Summer School students, this may be the first time staying away from home. Even for children who have attended a summer school before, a different place filled with lots of new faces can be daunting. Our primary focus is always on the happiness and security of the children staying with us and our staff are experienced and well-trained in dealing with issues of nerves or homesickness. We keep in close contact with parents during each child’s stay and are always there to answer any questions, before and during the summer. We want every child to return home with increased confidence, happy memories and new friendships and we understand that each child will have different needs while staying with us.

“The decision to send our daughter to summer school was not an easy one, as it would be the first time that we would leave her on her own for such a long time. We are so happy that we did…she had a wonderful time and made many friends from across the world. Dealing with the SBC School staff prior and during her stay was easy due to their friendly and professional nature”Nader, Parent, Jordan

Support at the schoolThe children are supervised throughout the day, from wake-up through to lights-out and our staff are always available to help and offer a friendly face. Our staff are residential at the school and therefore through the night-time there are always dedicated staff on duty should the children need them. Some children adapt very quickly to summer school life, whereas others take a little longer or require a bit more support. Either way, the Abberley Hall Summer School staff are able to offer lots of positive encouragement to ensure that each child gets the most out of their stay with us.

The English ProgrammeMorning Lessons - English LanguageThe English language lessons take place on 5 mornings each week, giving the children 15 hours of dedicated language tuition per week. The lessons are interactive, fun and perfect for children aged 8 – 12. Also for the ‘12’ please can you increase the sizing so that it doesn’t look weird.. The morning after the arrival day, the children are tested to gauge their English level and placed in classes on the basis of ability, age and nationality. The lessons are delivered by professionally qualified, friendly teachers with class sizes limited to a maximum of 15, giving every child the chance to receive lots of individual attention.

Morning Lessons - Summer StudyOur Summer Study option offers a content-based learning approach, providing children with the opportunity to develop their English skills through the study of other subjects. The subjects studied, all taught in English, include History, Geography, Creative Writing, English Literature and Science. Summer Study takes place during the 3 hours of morning lessons which take place on 5 days each week, replacing the general English language classes. Our Summer Study option is for children of an Upper Intermediate and Advanced level of English. Children can study on the Summer Study course for a maximum of 3 weeks.

Project Work & Day Trip PreparationWhen learning a language, it’s important that it is put into a real context to enable the children to express their interests and experiences. Each week the students work on a group project, such as a play for the Talent Show or a Class Film, to put their English into practice. They will also have a lesson to prepare them for their day trips.

Reports & CertificatesEach child’s progress is monitored closely during their stay with us and on departure all students receive an Abberley Hall Summer School Certificate, plus a progress report.
