nearly 115 years. In its intimate and welcoming environment, enthralling

performances of supreme musical works are experienced with a unique

immediacy. As we look forward to the 2015/16 Season, the Hall is

delighted to present some of the greatest artists in the world today, as well

as talented emerging artists who explore repertoire with skill, curiosity and

All of us the Halls audiences and supporters as much as its staff

are guardians of a long and illustrious tradition; but we must ensure the

by never ceasing to learn, whether through listening, participating or

to each Wigmore Hall event.

THE 2014/15 SEASON The number of concerts presented by Wigmore Hall has grown by 12% over the past 2 years, delivering a better quality and breadth of programme to our audiences than ever before.

The energy, imagination and impact of the 2014/15 Season is exemplified by two landmark projects that will extend into 2015/16 The Mozart Odyssey and Henry Purcell: A Retrospective. Superb performances have captivated listeners in the Hall itself, and are inspiring a myriad of learning projects, engaging people of all ages. Neither of these ambitious enterprises would have been possible without the investment made by you, the Halls supporters, notably in the form of the Endowment Fund and sponsored concerts, and also with the gifts which support the season as a whole.

Perhaps one of the things we value most when we see a performance on the Wigmore Hall stage is the sense of connection and immediacy of communication. These values also lie at the heart of our Learning programme and can be seen reflected throughout our work, from the non-verbal link between parents and their new babies at our For Crying Out Loud! concerts, to baritone Marcus Farnsworth singing alongside primary school pupils on the Wigmore Hall stage, or the bond and empathy experienced by musicians, residents and care staff taking part in a Music for Life session in a care home.

In these difficult times for music education and the arts in general, the breadth and scale of Wigmore Hall Learnings programme is striking, with 460 events and over 20,000 visits to our projects and events each season. Partnerships are key to sustaining our Learning activities working with organisations including schools, colleges and conservatoires, funders and other arts organisations, and the community and health sectors, and building strong connections with artists, young people, music leaders, teachers, care staff, community leaders, audience members and indeed any other individual who believes in the power of music to change and enrich our lives.

SCHUBERT PROJECT: OPENING THE WORLD OF SONG TO NEW AUDIENCES

Over the next two years we present each of Schuberts 600-plus Lieder performed by truly outstanding artists, exploring an infinite universe of musical and poetic expression. This series has been three years in the making and we are delighted to collaborate on this major project with the Schubertiade festival in Austria, a new international partner for us, which is committed to preserving the song recital as a concert-going experience.

Alongside performances of the highest quality, this series also features a diverse programme of Learning events, delivered to the same exceptional standards, providing new insights for existing audiences and inspiring people who are new to the wonderful world of song.

THE 2015/16 SEASON Balancing tradition and innovation, the 2015/16 Season will set the pace for the next five years, building on the last decade of progress and achievement.

Among the programming highlights are multi-dimensional journeys through the entire song output of Schubert over two seasons, and the chamber music of Bartk (two composers closely identified with Wigmore Hall), and a still broader array of early and contemporary music. 500 years of repertoire will be represented in the three anniversary galas planned for May and June 2016, devoted to Schubert, Early and Baroque music and Contemporary works for string quartet. Please turn to page 8 for the Season Highlights and all the listings for 2015/16.

authorities on Schubert, and a Wigmore Study Group will focus on this rich topic in autumn 2015. We also have the inspirational Dominic Harlan presenting Schubert Lieder to people of all ages who are new to this musical world, including an event entitled Lieder for the Terrified at the very start of the 2015/16 Season, and a project for schools designed to inspire creative activity around song and storytelling. All of this work is fully integrated with our website, and talks and

podcasts, digital streaming and resources are available to support the programme. The schools project will also feature online films telling the stories behind the songs and with performances by leading artists. Inspired by these films, pupils will take part in specially designed activities to create their own responses to Schuberts work, writing their own Story Songs which will be shared through live performances and also online via the website.

A REVIEWWIGMORE HALL IS FAMED FOR ITS INTIMACY, BUT ITS AUDIENCES AND THE SCOPE OF THE ARTISTIC PROGRAMME JUST KEEP GROWING.

The season also sees Wigmore Hall make the first moves to becoming a digital broadcaster in its own right. Increasingly, audiences will be in a position to sample a wealth of activity through digital media, even if they cannot visit the Hall itself. They will share in vivid performances, discover repertoire including newly-commissioned scores and deepen their intellectual and emotional engagement with both music and artists.

Internet streaming is planned for four concerts, and we will also make video recordings of the Final of our Wigmore Hall/Kohn Foundation International Song Competition, as well as a number of concerts and learning events, which audiences will be able to view on our new, content-rich website. Launched in early 2015, it is at the heart of our digital media strategy and supported by the new technical facilities that will be installed at the Hall in summer 2015.

While never compromising the Halls reputation for quality, we will continue to take an enterprising and creative approach as we seek both to satisfy long-standing devotees and to draw in new audiences.

As the past ten years have shown, this approach seems to be working, and we are determined to maintain our momentum in the years to 2020.

While ticket sales are strong, they only cover 60% of the overall cost of our operations. Running the Hall, with escalating operational costs and increased usage of our facilities, is becoming more and more difficult.
