Dear Parents, Teachers, and Lovers of Childrens Books,

When I first read Lane Smiths Its a Book, I laughed out loud. Really loud.

With rapier wit, Lane has managed to capture the ongoing debate over digital versu

print technology that we as parents, educators, and booksellers are thinking about

more and more. What does the future of reading hold for our children?

Although none of us have a crystal ball, there are some promising signs. A 2010 stu

of childrens picture book consumers found that families consider books to be more

important in their childrens life than a wide variety of other media including TV,

video games, and online offerings. On the developmental side, there is a persuasiv

argument being made for picture books as the perfect tool for preparing childrenfor a highly visual digital future.

Of course, thats no surprise to those of us who have known all along that great

childrens books prepare kids for every future, digital and otherwise. Reading

books together with your kids helps them build all the skills they will need for e

very eventuality: Attention, Empathy, Creativity, Imagination, Writing, Storytelling,

Self-Awareness, Logic, Collaboration, Community, and Critical Thinkingin short a

tool box for the 21st Century.

And once they get going with books, its hard to stop. If you dont believe me, just

    ask Donkey.

Best wishes to you and yours for a happy year full

    of great reading (and growing),

    A Q&A with Lane Smith

Q: In todays plugged-in world, why do you

feel that books are so important?

A: I think reading is important

whether from a book or an

    electronic device. As for the

    importance of books

specifically? I can only answerfor myself. I prefer books. I grew

up with printed matter and I prefe

to read that way. I like the feel of different paper

stocks and I like the experience of physically turning

the page. I hope readers ofIts a Book will share a

    similar experience.

Lane Smith is a best-selling author and illustrator of

more than two dozen books for children, including

the Caldecott-winningThe Stinky Cheese Man and

    Other Fairly Stupid Tales.

    Its a BookLane Smith

When monkey tells donkey he is reading

a book, donkey is bursting with questions:

Can you blog with it? How do you scroll

down? Can you make the characters fight?

Does it text? Tweet? Does it need a password? To each question the long-suffering

monkey patiently replies Noits a book. In the end, donkey discovers what the

wondrous technology of the book can do better than any other. A witty and stylish

celebration of the book that is sure to have both kids and adults laughing out loud.
