Welcome
At Avenues, we believe that learning and enrichment don’t stop with the end of the school day.
Each semester brings new classes to our program and gives our students the opportunity to be “at
ease beyond their borders.” Our after-school program activates students’ sense of wonder and self-
discovery while inspiring a love of learning. We encourage students to eagerly seek new experiences
and boldy explore their interests.
PlayLab and StudyLab Jr. will begin on Tuesday, January 3, 2017. Specialty classes will begin Monday,
January 9. All after-school programs will run until Friday, June 9, 2017. We are available daily from 3:00
to 6:00 p.m., ready to offer a relaxed setting while furthering your child’s education with
globally-themed projects and creative exploration. We look forward to another fun and fulfilling spring

This class consists of three components: storytelling, project of the day
and a fun game to conclude. Perhaps one day we will tell a story of
magical, faraway places and then build a castle or spaceship that we
saw in our imaginations.
This is a continuation of our introductory course and is tailored to
students who are comfortable with piece movement. Our expert
instructors will introduce students to the different parts of a chess
game including basic openings, how and when to capture pieces
and recognizing checkmates. Students will also build a foundation
in tactics, critical thinking and pattern recognition. If enough
students register to have more than one section, we conduct a brief
assessment on the first day to ensure students are grouped with
others with similar knowledge and playing experience.
Prerequisite: Students should have completed at least one class of ELC
Chess or have had similar experience.
Fencing is a wonderful way to inspire athleticism combined with
freedom of imagination. The group learns to coordinate movement
and thinking by way of fun and unique fencing exercises. Skill
development thrives through exploration of actual fencing bouts with
use of modern scoring equipment. Students accomplish true-to-sport
competitive fencing experiences under the guidance of two top-level
fencing instructors. Bravery and graciousness are integral to this
program for your light-sabre masters!
This is a fun introduction to chess for our youngest students. Our
expert teachers introduce piece movement and basic chess rules
using stories, analogies and child-friendly games specifically created
for this age group. In our unique program, basic chess strategy is
introduced to our nursery and pre-K students, who take great delight
in their weekly accomplishments!
This child-centered program encourages discourse with our budding
scientists and takes time to delve into their interests. The class is held
in Professor Gal Apagos’s discovery corridor and includes a variety of
Maker projects, experiments, nature study and animal care. Past units
have included glow science, chemistry, brush bots, surviving in the
wild, medieval armor and carpentry, terrariums, flights and kites and
Rube Goldberg machines.

Want to learn to take great pictures? Students will start to use the
camera as a way of seeing and exploring the world around them. Over
the course of the semester, they will develop a small photography
portfolio of works. As a way of training the eye and building an art
vocabulary, students will also draw from observation and discuss
various works of art. As the weather gets warmer, the class will spend
time outside, seeing the world, photographing and drawing as a way of
recording the students thoughts and sharing their unique perspectives.
Does your child love using technology? Do they want to learn to create
robots and code? In this class, students will use Lego WeDo kits to
create open-ended robot projects. They’ll then use MacBooks and the
latest software to bring their robotic creations to life. No experience
necessary!

Tactics are an integral part of chess and occur throughout all phases
of the game. This dynamic class focuses on common tactics such as
pins, forks, skewers, double attacks, deflections, discovered checks
and mating attacks. Each week we prepare a variety of puzzles and
chess brain teasers so students at all playing levels will be challenged
and engaged. This class encourages imaginative chess play and is
ideal for a student who has mastered piece movement and the basic
rules; may have tournament experience; and enjoys working on
puzzles and exercising creativity (think mazes, Space Invaders, racing
games or Pac-Man).
Please Note: Instructors will conduct a brief assessment in the first
class to ensure that all students are grouped appropriately.
Students will explore and learn various clay hand-building and
hand-sculpting techniques. They will be instructed on how to pinch,
coil and create slab construction, with a focus on their themes of
interest and through storytelling. Students will also learn basic glazing
technique and use tools to add texture and designs to their works.

Established in 2004, Broadway Bound Kids is a performing arts program based in Manhattan and the
surrounding boroughs. A team of talented and caring teaching artists and professional performers lead
creative and exciting classes in a stress-free environment. Broadway Bound Kids passionately believes
that involvement in the performing arts increases self-esteem, builds relationships and encourages
respect and creativity. In our programs, kids learn about teamwork, self-expression, critical thinking and
so much more.
Child’s Play NY offers the youngest thespians dramatic play classes that encourage creative expression,
confidence and collaboration. In Child’s Play NY classes, students explore the joyous energy of
theater and make-believe led by professional performers. Through improvisation, songs and creative
movement, we reinterpret literature, generating our own characters and scenarios along the way.
Simple props and costumes help bring characters to life. Children are empowered as they develop early
problem solving and literacy skills, empathy and an increased understanding of the world in which they
live. In its fifth year, Child’s Play NY is heralded by Time Out Kids as a top acting class in New York and
provides top quality after-school enrichment to children in Manhattan and Brooklyn.
The Coding Space was created by Eli Kariv and Steve Krouse in July 2015. Building off Steve’s childhood
experiences at IMACS, they created a Socratic, self-paced after-school coding class in New York City.
We believe they will empower the world’s next generation of problem solvers and leaders, and that
coding is one of the best mediums to develop these skills.
As a New York City chef, Winston started his culinary journey long before he knew he wanted it as
a career. The Brooklyn native remembers spending countless summers helping at his family’s small
takeout operation in the UK. After obtaining a degree in finance and mathematics, followed by several
years as an actuary in a top global risk consulting firm, Chiu realized his true calling in the culinary arts.
Shortly after graduating from the Institute of Culinary Education, he sought apprenticeships in top
restaurants such as Betony and WD50, as well as working with Dinner Lab in New York City. Today he
continues to follow his passion to cook, learn and teach, all while chasing his next succulent endeavor.
Born and raised in New York City, Bryce Clarke was an active member in almost every sport when he
was a child. He grew up playing in parks with his friends and dreaming of being a NBA player. After
graduating high school he discovered parkour and started teaching gymnastics at Chelsea Piers Field
House and the JCC on the Upper West Side. “My number one goal is to show people that parkour is not
dangerous, it is a tool that can be used by anyone to overcome obstacles in their path. I want to show
other people how to embrace this wonderful machine we call our bodies.”

The New York Aquarium is the oldest continuously running aquarium in the United States, first opening
in Castle Clinton in 1896. The aquarium is part of the Wildlife Conservation Society, which has the oldest
zoo education program in the United States. The goal of our education programming is to inspire a
movement of conservation activists by providing inspiration and connections to nature and science.
The aquarium hopes to excite students about the marine environment, especially in our city, where we
are surrounded by water and wildlife.

The Riding Academy, which is the only equestrian facility in Manhattan, has been teaching NYC kids
from every income level how to ride and care for horses for the past 30 years. The non-profit academy
is a labor of love of Dr. George Blair, who was a university professor, college president and the deputy
chancellor of SUNY before he retired.
Asunda Peters started practicing yoga over ten years ago after long days working in the advertising
world. She completed her 500-hour teacher training with ISHTA yoga and continued with Little Flower
Yoga to complete her children’s teaching certification. She believes it is truly beneficial to introduce
yoga to our children in a supportive and gentle environment. Asunda spends her downtime being a
bookworm and doing crafts with her young daughter. She believes in teaching from a place of constant
learning, remembering that you are always a student.
Super Duper Tennis brings the FUNdamentals of tennis to kids ages 3–10 years old in an educational,
exciting and positive environment to enhance their overall love for the game in accordance with the
United States Tennis Association’s (USTA) training methods. We make tennis fun and accessible to kids
by transforming non-conventional areas into kid-sized tennis courts with equipment the right size for
them (smaller racquets and lower pressurized balls that bounce at their height)—making it easier and
more fun to learn the lifelong game of tennis.
The goal of Super Soccer Stars is to teach soccer skills in a fun, non-competitive, educational
environment. Their philosophy is to use soccer to nurture, to build self-confidence and to develop
teamwork in every class. The specially designed curricula use positive reinforcement and a low
child-to-coach ratio to ensure that each child improves at his or her own rate while having endless fun.
They are very excited to continue with the Avenues after-school program.

ELC students are brought from their classroom to the fifth floor by an ELC teacher. Once there, they will
sit at a table with other students in their after-school class and enjoy a healthy snack. The after-school
teacher will then walk the students to their after-school space.
Lower Division students will be brought to the fifth floor common space and sit according to their
after-school classes. There they will have a healthy snack, accompanied by their after-school teacher. At
3:25 p.m., the teachers will walk the students to their after-school space. Parents must note that their
child is attending after-school in the Dismissal Manager.
DISMISSAL
Students now have two options for after-school dismissal. Students can be picked up in their class
location or be walked down to 10th Avenue to be picked up by a private car at 4:45 p.m. A full list of
class locations will be available at security and at the fifth floor hub. If you are more than five minutes
late to pick up your child from a specialty class or lesson, he or she will be brought to the fifth floor
commons.
Students who are picked up by a private car must already have been issued a placard by the school.
These students will gather in the fifth floor commons following dismissal from their after-school
programs and be walked down to their car by an after-school teacher at 4:45 p.m. To sign your child up
for this service, please choose private car pick-up when registering for after-school classes. If your child
has not been picked up by 5:00 p.m., he or she will be brought back up to the fifth floor commons to
join Last Call, from which they will have to be signed out by a parent or caregiver.
Please note you must have a proper Avenues ID badge to come pick up your child. No one will be
allowed out of the lobby without the proper ID badge. If there is any change in your normal pick-up
routine after 3:00 p.m., please call security at 646-664-0992, who will pass the message to the
after-school staff via radio.
Parents are expected to have their child picked up at dismissal time. All after-school programs end
promptly at 6:00 p.m. Late fees of $25 for every 15 minutes will be applied for all late pick-ups after
6:00 p.m. with no exceptions (including advance phone calls).
LAST CALL
If a student cannot be picked up after a specialty class or music lesson, he or she can stay with us on
the fifth floor from class dismissal to 6:00 p.m. This time includes a nutritious snack, inter-grade games,
quiet reading, homework time and collaborative projects. You must register for Last Call based on the
day of the week.
DROP-IN CARE
Drop-in care is available for students with irregular schedules or who need to stay late on an ad-hoc
basis. Drop-in care is available at $25 per hour, with a one-hour minimum; any portion of an hour will be
charged the full hourly rate of $25. Drop-in fees will be billed to your monthly account.
Parents must call or email both the after-school office and the division assistant as soon as you know a
drop-in is needed.

Parents of Lower Division students must also put any changes into the online School Dismissal Manager
by 1:00 p.m. if a drop-in is needed so everyone receives the same information. School Dismissal
Manager will ensure the division sends your child to after-school, rather than releasing him or her
for regular pick-up. The drop-in request must also include information on the child’s allergies and on
pick-up arrangements for the day. Please note that the drop-in is not confirmed until you get a return
email from the after-school team.
If your child is not planning to attend his or her regularly scheduled after-school program on a
particular day, notify the after-school office and update School Dismissal Manager (Lower Division only)
by 1:00 p.m. to indicate a change in your child’s dismissal for the day.
A student who exhibits the following symptoms should be kept home until the child is symptom-free for
24 hours without medication: fever above 100.5° Fahrenheit, vomiting or diarrhea. If your child should
become sick or mildly ill during after-school, we will call home to have the child picked up from school.
If a child misses an after-school class due to illness or schedule conflict, we cannot offer a make-up
class.
If an after-school class must be cancelled due to teacher absence, we will offer a make-up by extending
future classes to make up the time.
Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis. The online enrollment program will be open for
registration on the following days at 12:00 p.m.
ELC registration will open Tuesday, November 15.
Lower Division registration will open Wednesday, November 16.
Upper Division registration will open Thursday, November 17.
The registration page can be accessed from the main avenuesnyc.org page under “Extended Learning”
(https://avenuesafterschool.campbrainregistration.com/). Upon receipt of your application, you
will receive an electronic confirmation listing classes in which your son or daughter is enrolled. If a
requested class is filled or cancelled, you will be notified. To avoid disappointment, please indicate if
you are willing to be waitlisted.
If all of your child’s top choices are full, and you are only joining a wait list, you will still be charged the
$50 registration fee. If your child does not get into any after-school classes by January 23, you will be
refunded that fee.
There are no drop-in options for specialty enrichment classes, and students must register for the entire
spring session.
All classes are contingent upon enrollment and may be cancelled due to low enrollment prior to the first
day of class.
DROPPING CLASSES/REFUNDS
If a student decides to drop a class before the first meeting, the course fee is refundable. If a class is
dropped after the first meeting, 75% of the class fee will be refunded. THERE ARE NO REFUNDS after
the second class meeting and the registration fee is non-refundable. There are no exceptions to this
policy; please be familiar with the policy before registering your child for classes.
PRICING
Prices are available on pages 6–8 of the course catalog. The cost of each class is based on the number
of days it will run. Please note there is a $50 registration fee applied at the time of payment.
[email protected] | 646-664-0994
BILLING
All classes will be billed in full upon registration. There is a 2.3% credit card processing fee. Drop-in fees
will require your signature on the day of service and will be billed to your tuition account monthly.
FINANCIAL AID
For families who receive financial aid from Avenues, a financial aid package is available to be used for
after-care and specialty enrichment classes. If you receive financial aid, please contact Chequanna
Kelley ([email protected]) before registering online to receive your financial aid amount.
Special events, materials, transportation and private music lesson fees are not included in the financial
aid award. Financial aid families should check with the business office on the conditions of their
financial aid package.
