Profile The Centinela Valley Union High School District is located in Los Angeles County, close to the Los Angles International Airport. The Garvey School District is situated at the western end of the San Gabriel Valley, about 10 miles from the city of Los Angeles. It is the second oldest elementary school district in Los Angeles County. In this year of the 100th anniversary of Lawndale Elementary School District exciting changes came alive in the District with the opening of two new schools on September 6th. Lucille J. Established in 1885 with fewer than a dozen students meeting in a borrowed tent, LBUSD now educates more than 92,000 students in 95 public schools in the cities of Long Beach, Lakewood, Signal Hill, and Avalon on Catalina Island. The third largest school district in California, it serves the most diverse large city in the United States, according to Census 2000, with 46 different languages spoken by local students. The district employs more than 8,000 people, making it the largest employer in Long Beach.

LBUSD was the first public school system in the U.S. to require uniforms in kindergarten through eighth grade; the first to require any third grader reading below grade level to attend mandatory summer school; and the first to end social promotion. The district led the nation’s first conversion of a public middle school from co-educational classes to separate classes for boys and girls. History The Los Nietos School District ( the 2nd oldest district in California) has acted as a school district under the laws of the State of California since August 12, 1861. And this is our greatest challenge as we move forward. We must continue to work together to raise the bar even higher, but our focus must also be to close the gap. As our test scores have increased and our campuses have become more attractive both through Measure Y improvements and through the academic programs offered, we must ensure that no child slips through the cracks.

The second challenge is our need to continue to increase our partnerships and connections with all parts of our community. Pasadena City College has worked very closely with PUSD, offering courses and dual enrollment for our students.

The third challenge I would like to highlight is our need to be financially secure. As our community has become less affordable, we have seen some of our neediest students move away to less expensive communities. This has resulted in reduced resources to serve our remaining students. The problem is simple - the money we lose from the state for each student who leaves our district is greater than the amount we save. In other words, our expenses do not drop at the same rate that our revenue drops. We need to think seriously about all of our spending patterns and consider whether there are some areas where spending needs to be reprioritized so that we can focus on our goal of achieving 80% proficient and advanced by 2009. Every decision must be weighed against this outcome. The Management Audit that we are currently undergoing will help us with this process.
