The district serves about 15,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade at 12 elementary, three middle, three high schools, two alternative schools and an adult education program.

Covina-Valley schools provide the personalized service and caring culture of a small school district, where teachers and administrators know their students by name. Each year, our graduates earn in excess of $1 million in scholarships. Due to the high academic standing of Covina-Valley students, more than half of all graduates meet or exceed the admission requirements for the California State and University of California systems. We provide a strong basic education underscoring reading, writing, language arts, math, science, social science and technology, which is aligned with the California Department of Education standards. Moreover, each campus offers leadership, curricular, and athletics/sports opportunities. A broad array of support services is available to children, adults and families. An extensive arts program begins in elementary school, providing students with a well-rounded education. Our athletic teams garner California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Championships, and are consistently ranked among the best in the region. Each school enjoys high parent participation - active PTA and booster organizations. Community residents and local businesses serve as classroom volunteers, providing in-kind prizes to motivate and recognize student achievement, and to underwrite important school events.

5 Elementary Schools 1 Intermediate School 1 High School K-12 Enrollment 4,700 In Los Angeles County, few school districts maintain a “family,” caring spirit, where teachers - and even their administrators - know students by name, greet parents and provide a warm, friendly atmosphere for students, parents, visitors and staff. Yet, that is precisely why families move into the Duarte Unified School District and stay. We deliver a broad, challenging, standards-based curriculum in a supportive, caring culture at each school. Our schools also benefit from active parents, and a highly supportive community. Duarte Unified is a small district, serving about 4,700 youngsters from Duarte, Bradbury, and the Maxwell Park area through five elementary schools (K-6), one intermediate (7-8), one high school (9-12) and one alternative education campus. History The Duarte community began as a 7000-acre land grant to Don Andres Duarte in the mid-19th Century. The District’s roots date to 1906, when Duarte was part of the Monrovia-Arcadia-Duarte School District. Each area separated forming separate school districts in 1954. Location If you’re wondering, “Where is the Duarte Unified School District?” the District is nestled at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains in the San Gabriel Valley. Easily accessible by major freeways, the District is located within 30-60 minutes of Downtown Los Angeles, the county’s theatre/arts district, Hollywood, beaches, theme parks, and mountain recreational areas. Duarte is proud to be the home of the world-renowned cancer research center – the City of Hope. Governance Duarte Unified is governed by a five-member elected Board of Education. Each member serves a four-year term. The Board is responsible for overseeing District operations, and enacting policies and procedures to ensure the safe and smooth operation of all schools. Beliefs We believe that all children are capable learners. Our staff focus on helping each youngster reach his/her personal best. Our goal is to graduate students who are well-prepared for living, working and learning in a challenging world.

El Monte also has an ethnically diverse and dynamic population with 72 percent Hispanic, 18 percent Asian, and 7 percent White.

With the growing population in El Monte, community and educational facilities continue to improve. New parks are being built to serve the growing population with many active sports programs. A brand new Aquatic Center with three pools is located along the Tyler Avenue Heritage District, which includes the City’s Community and Senior Centers, museums, and a public library.

In addition, the appearance of our neighborhoods has greatly improved, partly due to various programs offered by the City, and partly due to the growing pride and awareness of our residents that El Monte is a great place to live, work, and play.

In this year of the 100th anniversary of Lawndale Elementary School District exciting changes came alive in the District with the opening of two new schools on September 6th. Lucille J. Smith Elementary School is the District’s first new elementary school in 50 years. The opening of Jane Addams Middle School marks the first time the District has had two middle schools. In preparation for the new school openings, it was necessary to establish new attendance boundaries. Along with the new boundaries, the grade level configuration of each school changed in September 2006. All elementary schools now serve students from Preschool through 5th Grade, while the two middle schools serve students in 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade. Who We Are

The Lawndale Elementary School District located in the heart of the South Bay in Lawndale California, consists of nine school sites, providing a public school education to approximately 6,000 students. Situated at the southern edge of the Los Angeles basin, Lawndale Elementary School District is a kaleidoscope of peoples. Here we welcome students and families from nations as far as Vietnam and Nigeria, from nations as near as Mexico, serving first generation immigrants and long-established residents side by side. Our differences are our strength as we celebrate our cultures, delight in our languages, and create community in classrooms, schools, and neighborhoods, with equity and excellence our goal for all.

Little Lake City School District has a long and distinctive history of excellence. Serving the communities of Santa Fe Springs, Norwalk, and portions of Downey, the District educates 4,900 youngsters in grades K-8 at seven elementary schools and two middle schools.

In a sprawling metropolitan area like Los Angeles County, it is hard to find a community and school district that offer as much as Little Lake. Little Lake maintains a small hometown atmosphere. Our principals and staff work hard to meet the individual learning needs of students in a family-friendly and highly supportive atmosphere. As a result, families move into the area and stay for generations.

Little Lake enjoys a stable, seasoned management team, and employs highly qualified teachers. Students also benefit from active community participation and high parent involvement. Established in 1885 with fewer than a dozen students meeting in a borrowed tent, LBUSD now educates more than 92,000 students in 95 public schools in the cities of Long Beach, Lakewood, Signal Hill, and Avalon on Catalina Island. The third largest school district in California, it serves the most diverse large city in the United States, according to Census 2000, with 46 different languages spoken by local students. The district employs more than 8,000 people, making it the largest employer in Long Beach.

LBUSD was the first public school system in the U.S. to require uniforms in kindergarten through eighth grade; the first to require any third grader reading below grade level to attend mandatory summer school; and the first to end social promotion. The district led the nation’s first conversion of a public middle school from co-educational classes to separate classes for boys and girls. Known as the Jefferson Leadership Academies, the school’s focus on academics has reduced distractions and produced higher student achievement.

Even with such excellent support, the district by the late 1990s struggled with one of its toughest challenges. Enrollment grew rapidly. Hundreds of students transferred to Long Beach schools from private and parochial schools. New schools and classrooms were needed urgently. Fortunately, strong community support assured the overwhelming passage of $295 million in local school bonds in 1999. These bond funds are helping assure that students and teachers will have the facilities, equipment and technology they need for years to come. New schools and classrooms are being built on time and on budget.

District Mission Statement The Los Nietos School District is committed to providing the best educational environment possible within the personnel and fiscal resources available so that all pupils in the district may achieve to their highest potential and become fully competent in basic areas. These include English literacy, math computation and problem solving, history, science, computers, and social skills in order that they might be happy, successful, competent, and productive adults for the good of themselves and society.

History The Los Nietos School District ( the 2nd oldest district in California) has acted as a school district under the laws of the State of California since August 12, 1861. In 1885, part of the district was made into the Pio Pico School District. In 1924, a school was built on the present site of the Los Nietos Middle School at 11425 East Rivera Road in Los Nietos, California. The building was condemned after the 1933 earthquake. When it was rebuilt, the floor plan was identical to the building that had been torn down but the structural design was changed from brick to stucco.

Presently, the Los Nietos Elementary School District consists of four schools, three K-5 schools; Aeolian School and Ada S. Nelson School, both located in Whittier, Rancho Santa Gertrudes School in Santa Fe Springs, and one 6-8 middle school; Los Nietos Middle School.

District Facts The Los Nietos School District has a total area of 3.5 square miles with three elementary schools and one middle school. The total enrollment of 2,500 students is composed of about 85% Hispanic and 14% Anglo. The remainder of the school population is made up of other ethnic groups. The current school budget is nearly $16,489,268 including State and Federal Categorical Programs.

We are located in the center of Southern California just east of the city of Los Angeles. Major freeways intersect the area, making the San Fernando Valley, the beaches, and Orange County readily acessible. The San Gabriel Mountains, the Mojave Desert, and the Pacific Ocean are within easy reach and offer abundant recreational activities. Many higher educational institutions are located nearby.

And this is our greatest challenge as we move forward. We must continue to work together to raise the bar even higher, but our focus must also be to close the gap. As our test scores have increased and our campuses have become more attractive both through Measure Y improvements and through the academic programs offered, we must ensure that no child slips through the cracks.

The second challenge is our need to continue to increase our partnerships and connections with all parts of our community. Pasadena City College has worked very closely with PUSD, offering courses and dual enrollment for our students.

The third challenge I would like to highlight is our need to be financially secure. As our community has become less affordable, we have seen some of our neediest students move away to less expensive communities. This has resulted in reduced resources to serve our remaining students. The problem is simple - the money we lose from the state for each student who leaves our district is greater than the amount we save. In other words, our expenses do not drop at the same rate that our revenue drops. We need to think seriously about all of our spending patterns and consider whether there are some areas where spending needs to be reprioritized so that we can focus on our goal of achieving 80% proficient and advanced by 2009. Every decision must be weighed against this outcome. The Management Audit that we are currently undergoing will help us with this process.

I would like to leave you with this final thought, and that is Go Public! You may have heard our new slogan or you may have seen it on posters, bumper stickers and other items. Our message to you is simple and clear...Join all of us at Pasadena Unified School District and be a part of our family. And if you have any questions about going public, you can contact me directly by email at psoelter (at) earthlink (dot) net. or by phone at 578-1127.
