Board of Directors

Our mission as the American Board of Certified Haircolorists is to make you a better haircolorist. By raising our standards we will all enjoy a more prosperous career.

On behalf of our Board of Directors I would like to welcome you to the 11th annual Energizing Summit. Each year we bring an array of talented educators. Some are here for the first time and others you have enjoyed from years prior. I am most impressed by lecturers who are successful in doing what they teach.

Our classes are small so you can ask lots of questions and interact with the educators. It is important educators understand the challenges haircolorists are faced with. We offer a variety of haircolor subjects so you can really learn. Some classes are creative in nature while others are more technical. We even have business classes that are centered on haircoloring. You have the opportunity to participate in hands on classes and have the opportunity to work with a variety of haircolors and bleaches.

Hopefully when you have the Energizing Summit experience behind you, you will be inspired to become a Board Certified Haircolorist.

LISA KELLEY travels the country teaching hairdressers everything she has learned about haircolor. She has an extensive background in the beauty industry, as a salon colorist, a distributor technician and working for a manufacturer. She knows hair color from all aspects of the industry. She is very open and critical of haircolor education and what needs to change before we are considered a true profession. She is a great supporter of the American Board of Certified Haircolorists. She came on the first wave of ABCH Certified Haircolorists and became an evaluator shortly afterwards. As an evaluator she has had the opportunity to observe many great haircolorists. She feels the profession should make ABCH Certification a mandate to doing hair color. Those who have attended her class at the Summit know her style. We are privileged to have her as our 011 Summit Master of Ceremony.

No one has a better pulse of the industry than Larry Kopsa. We mean he has information no one else has. Lets not rely on rumors, lets get the facts! Without naming names he will tell you which states and salons are doing well and which are hanging on by a thread. Better yet he can tell you why. What has happened in the past to get us here and what does the future hold for the salon industry? Have some lunch and listen to someone who knows.

Toni Fanelli is a thirty year veteran of the beauty industry. He has a very unique story to share with you and one that will be of interest to everyone struggling to build and maintain a clientele. Tony was the talk of the town, a very successful salon owner with a clientele that adored him. He was booked months in advance and if you missed your appointment for any reason you were out of luck. Success went to his head, he opened another salon, started his own haircolor company and a few bad investments and he found the only thing he had left was a salon without a clientele. His comeback to what he abandoned is a story everyone should hear. What happens when you try to revive what you once had and how his former clients treated him now that they had someone else who cared for them. His Cinderella story is amazing and bittersweet. You have to hear this.

Enjoy Lunch with Two Industry Icons

These classes are optional and require a fee of $35.00. Purchase tickets at the Registration desk. Seating is limited, purchase your tickets early. The fee of $35.00 includes tax and tip. Enjoy a seated lunch buffet and gain a world of knowledge from two Giants of the industry.

As a former salon owner, with his wife, Maggie, Larry has created a deep knowledge of the financial and the management challenges of the beauty industry. In addition, by working with clients from coast to coast, plus being in high demand to speak at events worldwide, has given him a unique incite to salons and spas. Larry has written numerous articles and assisted Milady in the development of fundamental tools for salon and spa owners. This combination of his practical knowledge of being a former salon owner, combined with the financial skills of a Certified Public Accountant provides valuable resource to help solve problems and help salons and spas have more money at the end of the month. Larry Kopsa, CPA, is a partner of the twenty-five member firm of Kopsa Otte, CPAs. Kopsa Otte has been referred to as “the only CPA Firm that specializes in Salons and Spas.”

Working with Pure TonesThe ability to work with pure tones is a real adven-ture. Once you master the art of working with them you will have a much clearer knowledge of the art of haircoloring. Pure tones simply means what it says, the tones are pure. Does this mean all other colors are unpure? Does this mean other colors are muddy while pure tones are clear? Just what does this mean? Lenny’s class will take you through the process of us-ing his color of choice. You will find Lenny to have high energy and engaging, his in depth knowledge of pure tones give him the ability to customize formula-tions to achieve perfection on every head.

Tired of placing foils into the hair in the same manner? Want to try something new? Michael Page has the class for you. His creative haircol-or skills go far beyond what most of us imagine. His approach to creating newness to his hair-color foil placement runs the gamut from avant garde to soft and subtle. There is something for everyone in this class. You will leave Michael’s class wanting to run directly to the salon to try these new techniques. His clear, concise manner of teaching will have you leaving this class with a clear vision of what you want to achieve. This is a class you will not want to miss.

Misael Aponte has thrilled audiences far and wide. He has always been inspired by creativity and the intristic rewards received through edu-cation. His keen eye for the blending of hair-colors make his class very special and exciting. Misael’s unique approach of color placement makes dimensional haircolor more understand-able . Using color to accentuate or defuse fea-tures of the face require the eyes of an artist. He can teach this to you. You will leave this class excited to go back to the salon to use his meth-ods for coloring hair. Don’t miss his class!!

The Art of Color and Movement

Peggy Sue will give you the “no-fail” tools to formulate. Formulating should not be a shot in the dark. It should be a well thought out process based on factors everyone should know. Peggy Sue will put you through the step process. This plan follows the ABCH curriculum from the lift deposit concept through the natural hair and determination of the undertones. You will see how big a part the undertones play in the final color result, and be amazed at how easy it is. Peggy Sue conveys her message with clar-ity and crispness.

Eliminate Formulating Frustrations

This class is all about bleach-es. Working with a variety of bleaches, each participant will put their bleach through its paces. Then the participants will compare results: which is faster, which is slower, which produces the most dust when mixing. It is also interesting to note the pH of each bleach and how much it changes the longer the bleach has been mixed. The price of each bleach is explored to see if the more expensive bleaches are worth the additional money. You will come away from this class with a world of knowledge about bleaches.

Mastering undertones is having the ability to pre-dict what the outcome of the color will be, based on the natural haircolor. This class will teach you how you can confidently predict the outcome of a haircolor. The haircolor in the tube or bottle is a constant. The only thing that changes are under-tones, and they are based on your client’s parent-age and the colors the hair has gone through while growing up. You will learn to use the client con-sultation swatch chart and you will come away from this class with the ability to better anticipate the final color result. This is a class for the newer haircolorist and anyone seeking to become an American Board Certified Haircolorist.

The art of blending haircolors is incredibly important in today’s competitive environment. The color placement on the head can render a beautiful flowing result or it can become a stiff rigid unflattering look. It is all deter-mined by the placement and the contrasting haircolors used. Take this opportunity to experience the artistry of applying haircolor using foils as well as free form ap-plications. Among the most beautiful blends are mixing reds and browns. Once you learn these methods you can adapt this knowledge to a great variety of haircolors and styles. This class is something you do not want to miss. This is a Hands on Class that requires a $40.00 Surcharge for the mannequin. Live bleach and hair-colors will be used all supplies are furnished. You take the mannequin home with you.

Are your colors not reacting as they should? Do you get brassy and red tones when you use an ash color? This class is for you. Kathy Partin, ABCH has developed a method of adding more color to your formulas so you get less fading and more durable haircolors. She calls the system she developed “Color Concentration.” It is substituting more haircolor in your formula in place of the water. You don’t put water in your formula, you say? Yes you do! Did you realize more than half of your formula is water? Water that dilutes your color and makes it wash out of the hair faster leav-ing the hair dry and brassy. Using a digital film to bring you into the salon you’ll learn the why and how of peroxide, unwanted red tones, banding, fade, DAMAGE and gray coverage. This class is so enriching and so fast moving you will be crying for more. Don’t miss Kathy Partin, ABCH.

From the lips of a distributor, who witnesses failure of salons on a weekly basis, Leo Lapierre has the answers if you only listen. Dont worry he won’t call on you, he is not trolling for custom-ers, he just has a burning desire to help salons survive in these turbulent times. Let him tell you how to get the most from your distributor. This class will focus on your color skills and how to make more money. Learn of the seven ways to increase sales, the two ways to increase profits, the two things that motivate everyone and the two biggest service mistakes that cause custom-ers not to return. Learn to overcome the fear of raising prices. Making money is great, keeping more of it is better.

Making Money Big Time

There are instances when the hair cries out for color. When designing a hairstyle you can look at it with a hair designer’s eyes. When the typical highlights will not do the style jus-tice, you have to look at the task at hand from a different point of view. Gary Gerard has worked in collaboration with his haircolorist to show several ways to create looks that are different in ways that most haircolorists would not conceive. If you do both haircoloring and haircutting this class is for you. This class will leave you inspired and begging for more.

Designing Hair for Color

Dark hair has its challenges --- strong under-tones and red tones which clients often do not like. There are methods and techniques that can be used to overcome client’s objections. The secret of working with dark hair is know-ing your limitations and not going beyond them. You will learn from Ivan that there is no magic bullet when it comes to coloring dark hair. Ivan has a clientele of dark-haired clients and has trained many Latino haircol-orists how to stay out of trouble. You will gain great insight on the handling of dark hair in his class.

In studying to take the ABCH examination, Mary Petillo was taken with how much easier her hair-color decisions became. In this class she will review the ABCH curriculum and what she per-ceives to be the parts of the curriculum that were most important to her and why. These are --- the haircolor categories, the gray card rule and the grading of porosity. Already a competent hair-colorist she found a renewed enthusiasm for her work. The ability to communicate with her cli-ents in a more intellectual manner was important to her, and as a result, her business flourished. This class will be extremely helpful if you plan to take the ABCH examination.

ABCs of ABCH

Jan Caruso has successfully guided many individu-als in passing the certification exam. With skill and patience, she coaxes and tutors candidates on what it takes to receive a high score. In this class, Jan will show you how the model answers are determined and how the score sheets work. You will explore how the various challenges should be handled and compare your decision with others in the class. You need to develop a sense of what the evaluators are looking for to pass this part of the examination. This is an intense and exciting class. If you are consider-ing taking the ABCH certification examination, this class is a must.

John Halal is the author of “Hair Structure and Chemistry Simplified.” Known as “The Chemistry FUNatic,” he makes learning chemistry fun. This class provides essential information about hair structure, coloring ingredients and the chemistry involved in haircoloring. He uses props that make the learning experience fun and lasting You will learn the truth behind many old wives’ tales, and be able to distinguish between reality and the many exaggerated marketing claims. This class empow-ers haircolorists by giving them the confidence that comes with education.

Killer Corrective Techniques is a class on how to implement various foiling methods. Most corrective haircolors must be applied with some type of dimensional application. It is all a matter of taking a careful assess-ment of the hair you are going to be work-ing on and giving the client some options. Some quick and easy techniques will be demonstrated and can offer a solution for those who have some difficulty with solv-ing corrective haircolor problems. Denise is a dynamo! You will love her class.

The step by step process of taking the exami-nation is demonstrated here by Paul Morrison, a distinguished haircolorist with 10 years of evaluating experience. The knowledge you gain in this class will propel you to the top of the scoring ladder. You will have three hours to process all of the information and techniques necessary to pass the examination. The products you will be using will be simu-lated bleach and haircolor, so there will be no mannequin surchage, and you do noT keep the mannequin. All of the tools and materials will be furnished.

This hands-on class will take you through three of the disciplines of the Performance Examination. After the demonstration, you will have the opportunity to perform the re-verse highlight, high low lighting and tone on tone. Grey reduction and bleach retouch will also be explained. All supplies will be furnished. A discounted $40.00 charge will be assessed for the specially designed man-nequin which you may take with you at the conclusion of class. Live bleach and color and all necessary tools will be furnished.

Organic Haircoloring - Hype or Heaven

Sharon Esche & Alexander irving

Melanie Nickels will be addressing the controversies sur-rounding organic haircoloring. Since the introduction of INOA haircolor by L’Oreal their anti ammonia message is having our clients asking a lot of questions about organic haircolor. Melanie has vast experience on the subject and she is prepared to address any questions you have regard-ing organic haircolor. She is not suggesting you change your existing color line in favor of organic haircolor, she is suggesting if you have a client who is concerned, now you have an option. Melanie will cover information on us-ing organic hair color. She will cover differences between ammoniated and non-ammoniated haircolor and answer the common questions of how it works. She will use a simple flip chart or computer to highlight points through-out her lecture; there will be ample time for questions.

“Nobody ever told me that!” How often do we hear that? The greatest (and most affordable) PR vehicle you have at your finger-tips is Facebook. You are both the publisher and your own en-tertainment producer. News and fun, and you and your salon are the Facebook stars. We’ll show you the 10 simple things you can do to engage your current Facebook fans and best of all, attract many new fans from within a 15 mile radius of your salon. Forget the Yellow Pages.

The ability to understand lights and shad-ows and how this simple concept will lay the groundwork for successful haircoloring. This is just one of many concepts Roy will cover in his astounding classes. Becoming a top-notch haircolorist requires you know the colors you are working with and how they will affect the face shape when applied prop-erly. Haircolor is much more than mixing and applying a haircolrcolor to your client, we are basically problem solvers, and the interaction with clients relies heavily on your communication skills. Roy is a master of conveying information to his audience. His classes are always fabulous. Don’t miss Roy Peters!!
