Since its official opening in 2013, the Abedian School of Architecture has gone from strength to strength and is well regarded nationally and internationally as an innovative and energetic centre of learning. The adventurous and visionary nature of the program offered by the School is a testimony to the open and inclusive ethos embodied in the design of its building and by the collaborative design studio culture fostered by the distinguished staff that guide and mentor the students.

Designed by Sir Peter Cook and CRAB Studio (London), the building offers both inspiration and an uplifting illustration of the power of architecture to enhance and embody the principles of openness and inclusiveness that are so distinctive of the School. As previously expressed, the vision of the School is best explained in the words of Karim Rashid: “Design is about the betterment of our lives poetically, aesthetically, experientially, sensorially and emotionally”.

Although focused on the future, we are also guided by precepts and principles established by the protagonists of modernism who will be remembered for fostering new ways of thinking. They encouraged an adventurous stance to meeting the challenges of their day with a clear eye on the needs of the future. It remains my ardent hope that the graduates of our School will also come to be regarded amongst the ranks of the great creators and for their contribution to society though the quality of their architecture.

The Abedian School of Architecture has provided me with opportunities that I would have never encountered anywhere else. Bond University has allowed me to create a strong engagement with the industry and a greater involvement within the wider architectural community. I have not only grown as an architecture student throughout my studies here, but I’ve also grown as a person. We are so fortunate to work in a studio environment that is inspiring and stimulates creativity.

I decided to study a Bachelor of Architectural Studies at Bond University on the Gold Coast because I wanted to travel, but I also wanted a place that I could study and get a head start in my career. After I finished high school, I thought coming to Bond would be a great experience so I could improve my English and open a number of opportunities to work internationally later in my career. I first came to Bond as a Study Abroad Student and I tried out a number of different subjects before I knew that I wanted to study Architecture. I enjoyed the Architecture subjects so much that I decided to enrol in the full undergraduate program.

The School features one of the lowest student to staff ratio of any architectural program offered in Australia, ensuring unrivalled access to

state-of-the-art equipment, as well as personalised attention and mentoring. The features of the building provide a contemporary education space in

which students, the industry and community can learn, gather and exhibit.

We’re given our own individual work space that creates a more hands-on experience for the students. It allows us to collaborate together and build strong relationships as a team, offering and being offered constant support and advice. The culture and environment at Bond has allowed me to really challenge myself as a student and produce my best at all times, allowing me to think, design and create effectively and efficiently. The state-of-the-art facilities at Bond allows the students to truly learn their craft using the latest technologies in the world. The architecture workshop is so unique, providing tools and machines such as 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC routing machines as well as robots, which can only be found at a handful of architecture schools around the world. Our classes are much smaller in comparison to other universities, which makes for an intimate and thorough learning experience.

The professors take the time to understand how you work, how you design and are able to help you improve as an inspiring architect. We are privileged to be given such a wonderful opportunity to study at Bond University and the studio environment has become almost like a second home to the students - and we’ve practically become a family.

The culture within the studio is hard working, with 24-hour access enabling us to create a culture that works like a family network - everyone is always willing to help each other, as well as challenging one another to our best potential. Architecture school has given me friends that I will have forever, creativity that I never knew I had, skills that I will continue to learn in my profession and industry experience opportunities that I could not have never encountered anywhere else.

I have enjoyed my time at Bond because I was able to meet new people, and I received a high quality education. I received a lot of attention from my teachers which I think is extremely important in this program. During my first year, I stayed on campus, which was an amazing experience. I highly recommend staying on campus in the beginning of your degree because you have more of an opportunity to get involved with other students and events.

I feel like Bond is a very international university and focuses heavily on creating important relationships for your future life and career. I would recommend studying at Bond, not only because it is a beautiful university, but because I felt unique here. It is a relatively small university, but has a lot of resources that result in you getting exactly what you need, if not more, to do well in your studies.

I finished high school to immediately begin studying a Bachelor of Architectural Studies at Bond University. After graduating, I decided to continue my studies at Bond to graduate with a Master of Architecture. My main drive came from an early age, always finding a way to put a creative edge on anything I could get my hands on. I have always had an interest in the latest software and was passionate about making things.

I studied in Italy and New Caledonia before moving to Australia to study at Bond University. I was studying interior design before taking a much keener interest in architecture. After undertaking some English classes through Bond University College, I enrolled and graduated from a Bachelor of Architectural Studies, and am now completing my Master of Architecture at Bond University.

E V E N T S

R E S O U R C E S A N D E Q U I P M E N T

Bond University appealed to me firstly for its proximity being in the middle of the Gold Coast, secondly for its three-semester model and incomparable student to staff ratio, and finally, the opportunity to be a part of the School of Architecture with a philosophy of ‘Leaning through Making’.

The program stood out to me because of the opportunity to learn hand in hand with industry professionals while having access to cutting-edge facilities including a robotics laboratory, studio workshops and an award-winning School of Architecture Building. The thing I liked most about studying at Bond University was the thriving studio environment, being able work collaboratively with master’s and undergraduate students, as well as staff in one all-embracing space.

Studying a Master of Architecture at Bond University was highly rewarding and allowed me to experience and learn in a truly distinctive space full of motivated, passionate and vibrant people from the Architectural discipline. Working hand in hand with industry professionals, master’s and undergraduate students the School’s collaborative nature motivated me to further develop into the Architectural profession and see Architecture not just as a career but as a lifestyle.

Bond and the Abedian School of Architecture prepared me for my future career with the combination of teaching of the latest technologies, parametric design, post production programs and access to a cutting edge FabLab with a robotics laboratory. These technologies grew my design skills and confidence to critically analyse situations.

I would highly recommend undertaking the Master of Architecture program at Bond University as it offers the opportunity to experience studying in a truly innovative and collaborative learning environment. The program challenges students to innovate through design and thesis vision while having a fundamental understanding of professional practice, sustainability, contract law and ethics.

I love that Bond offers the opportunity to study in small classes. This is particularly important when studying Architecture – receiving constant feedback is essential in developing ideas. For this reason, you get the opportunity to interact frequently with the academic staff, which really enriches the study experience. We also have great opportunities to interact with industry experts and start building a professional network. The academic staff are very helpful with providing job related information, and providing job contacts. Bond offers great facilities, including a state-of-the-art workshop with 24hr studio access. The School provides such a vibrant and inspirational study environment. I currently work in architectural model making and conceptual drawing services. The work I professionally produce now, is very similar to what I learned, and what I would produce for studio projects while studying at Bond.

I would have to describe my time studying at the Abedian School of Architecture as one of the best experiences I have ever had! I have been provided the opportunity to study the things I am passionate about, while being surrounded by other truly passionate people, both students and staff.
