GAME STORYLINES• The 2014 season will be ACU’s fi rst in the Southland Conference since 1972. ACU – a founding member of the league in 1963 – was part of the Lone Star Conference from 1973-2013 before re-joining the Southland Conference and changing affi liation from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I in July 2013. Last year, ACU played an FCS independent schedule and fi nished with a 6-5 record.

• Junior running back Herschel Sims returns to Abilene after stints at Oklahoma State and Lamar, and should be the focal point of the Wildcats’ offense. The former Abilene High standout – who played at Oklahoma State in 2011 and Lamar in 2012 – will have gone 682 days between games when ACU takes the fi eld against Georgia State.

• Senior defensive end Nick Richardson needs 11 sacks to become the school’s all-time leader in quarterbacks sacks. Richardson had 11.0 sacks last season and enters his senior season with 23.5 in his career, just 11 sacks away from passing Reuben Mason (34.0 sacks from 1976-78) as ACU’s all-time leader in that category. One of the most disruptive pass-rushers in ACU history, Richardson also has 34.5 tackles for loss.

• Since 2006 when the Wildcats began their current run of eight straight winning seasons, ACU’s passing offense has generated an average of 3,479 yards, 31 touchdowns and only eight interceptions per season.

• Since 2005 when current coach Ken Collums joined the ACU coaching staff as its offensive coordinator, “ball security” has been catchphrase for the Wildcat offense. In the nine seasons since 2005, ACU is a combined plus-95 in turnover differential.

• The ACU defense has averaged 26.8 takeaways per season since 2005 when current coach Ken Collums arrived as the team’s offensive coordinator. ACU was plus-17 in turn-over margin last year with 29 takeaways and only 12 turnovers.

• The Wildcats gave up 391.8 yards per game in 2013, which was a 20-yard per game improvement over their 2012 per-game average of 413.8 and a 44-yard per game improvement over their 2011 average of 435.9.

SCOUTING THE WILDCATS

OFFENSE Th e Wildcats will fi eld one of their most inexperienced off ensive units since current

head coach Ken Collums became the off ensive coordinator in 2005, and it just happens

to coincide with the team playing the toughest schedule in program history.

Now in the program’s fi rst season as a full-fl edged member of the Southland

Conference since 1972, Collums – entering his third season as the head coach with a

record of 13-9 – must piece together an off ense capable of moving the ball and putting

up points against a schedule that posted a combined record of 72-67 last year and saw

three teams reach the NCAA Division I FCS playoff s. Take away Georgia State’s 0-12

record in 2013 and the combined record is 72-55 with eight of 12 teams fi nishing at least

.500 or better.

Th e biggest position battle on the off ense has been at the quarterback position where

sophomore Parker McKenzie will open the season as the starter. McKenzie has been

“effi cient” in practices and has improved since the Wildcats’ fi rst scrimmage two weeks

ago. True freshman Dallas Sealey is listed as the backup to McKenzie going into the

season-opener, having supplanted redshirt freshman Kade Munden.

Th e Wildcats are extremely young on the off ensive line, but at an average of 6-4, 300

pounds per player, are considerably bigger across the board than they’ve been in recent

seasons. Of the 10 players on the two-deep entering the season, eight are either redshirt

freshmen, true freshmen or fi rst-year transfers to the program.

Th e only two returning starters from last year are senior center Logan Hoppenrath

(6-4, 315) and senior right guard Colton Carnes (6-2, 310), both of whom have been

solid in fall camp. Th e other three starters for the opener against Georgia State appear

to be sophomore transfer Codey Funk (6-5, 320) at left tackle, redshirt freshman

Chance Rieken (6-5, 295) at left guard and redshirt freshman Riley Mayfi eld (6-7, 315)

at right tackle.

Th ose young linemen will be blocking for what could be another in a long line of

great ACU running backs in junior transfer Herschel Sims. Th e former Abilene High

standout – who played at Oklahoma State in 2011 and Lamar in 2012 – will have gone

682 days between games when ACU takes the fi eld against Georgia State, but he’s

already gotten everyone’s attention on the practice fi eld.

Redshirt freshman De’Andre Brown has had a very good fall camp and will get his

touches as well, sometimes sharing the fi eld with Sims and playing in the multiple threat

role that suited Darell Cantu-Harkless so well from 2010-13.

Th e Wildcats – who are one of the few teams in today’s fast-paced college football

world to still use a fullback on a consistent basis – have a stable of players who can

rotate between both fullback and tight end, led by seniors Jonathan Parker and Noah

Cheshier and junior Jamie Walker. Parker is listed as the starter at tight end with Walker

and freshman Liam Flowers behind him, while Cheshier is listed as the starter at full-

back with Parker behind him. However, all of those players will rotate between the two

positions. Collums is high on Flowers, the 6-3, 240-pound freshman from Arlington

Lamar High School.

Wide receivers coach Kendrick Holloway said after a recent practice that his group

had made “big strides” over the last week of practices. Th e starters – depending on the

formation the Wildcats trot out against Georgia State to start the game – will be junior

college transfer Cedric Gilbert (who redshirted in 2013), senior Demarcus Th ompson

and junior Monte Green-Avery. Th e backups will be Jace Hudson, junior college transfer

Jonathan Epps and junior Cade Stone.

DEFENSE For the fi rst time since the 2009 season, the ACU Wildcats return a more experienced

defensive lineup than their counterparts on the off ensive side of the ball. Th at season

was the last time the Wildcats allowed less than 300 yards per game, and they recorded

43 sacks and held eight of their 13 opponents to 15 points or less.

Th e Wildcats won’t need an exact duplicate of that kind of performance in 2014,

but Collums and defensive coordinator Darian Dulin would certainly take it given

some of the high-octane off enses the Wildcats will face this season. Th e Wildcats

return eight starters from last year’s unit, which collected 29 takeaways and helped

ACU put together a plus-17 turnover margin, one of the best marks in the country.

Th e secondary returns all four starters (Keith Barnett and Tyler Chapa at cornerback

and Justin Stewart and Angel Lopez at safety), while a pair of linebackers return, along

with two defensive linemen. ACU coaches have made fi nding big people on the defen-

sive line a priority in recruiting over the last two off -seasons, and those players signed in

2013 and 2014 could all see signifi cant playing time this season.

Nick Richardson returns as the starter at one end spot with senior Rob Boyd holding

down the other starting slot. Damon Williams – who transferred to ACU from Oklaho-

ma prior to last season – is the starter at tackle, while junior college transfer Josh Finley

has moved into the starting spot at nose guard.

At linebacker, it appears the Wildcats will start with senior Blake Rudd in the middle,

fl anked by senior Lynn Grady on the strong side and junior Travis Tarver on the weak

side. However, freshmen Bryson Gates, Gavin Burford, Sam Denmark and Myles

Solsberry could all make the traveling squad and see time on the fi eld. Senior Justin

Stephens had off -season knee surgery and is still recovering and is questionable for the

season-opener.

Th ree more freshmen – Jamar Mack, Damian Howard and Terry Ausborne – will play

in the secondary as the Wildcats’ youth movement appears to be in full swing.

SPECIAL TEAMS Th e Wildcats will return what should be one of the top kicking duos in the Southland

Conference in 2014 in sophomore placekicker Nik Grau and sophomore punter Austin

Kilcullen. Both kickers enjoyed specatacular freshman seasons as they each etched their

name in the ACU football record book.

Collums isn’t kidding when he fl atly states that Grau “might be our best player.” And

that’s not a knock on anyone else, especially when considering that he only missed

one fi eld goal last season, had a streak of 33 straight PATs made and punched 24 of 82

kickoff s through the back of the end zone for touchbacks. His leg, in fact, might be the

Wildcats’ biggest weapon early on while the off ense is fi ndings its way.

Kilcullen set a new single-season record for punting average and had 11 punts of at

least 50 yards during the season with a long of 64 yards against Illinois State on Sept. 21.

Th e Wildcats return several players from a punt return coverage unit that allowed

just 9.6 yards per return last season, as well as punt return unit that averaged better

than 12.0 yards per return. ACU, however, special teams coach Mark Ribaudo will have

to break in new punt and kickoff return specialists after losses to graduation cost them

their top return men from 2013.

Nik Grau turned in one of the top freshman seasons by a placekicker in ACU football

history. He made 10 of 11 fi eld goals for a 90.9 conversion percentage, which – if ACU’s

statistics had counted last year in the FCS statistical rankings – would have been the

best mark in NCAA Division I FCS football and tied for 13th in NCAA Division I foot-

ball.

Th at mark is ACU’s new single-season record, and his 56 PATs is the third-most in a

season behind Matt Adams (82 in 2007 and 78 in 2008). Grau also had 86 kicking points

in 2013, which is tied for fourth (Morgan Lineberry in 2011) in ACU single-season

history. Grau also made 33 straight PATs (the last four of the season-opening win over

Concordia, 7 for 7 against both McMurry and New Mexico Highlands, 2 for 2 vs. Illinois

State, 4 for 4 against Tarleton State, 2 for 2 against Pittsburg State and 7 for 7 against

Houston Baptist.

He carries a streak of eight straight made fi eld goals into the 2014 season. Grau’s

backup will be Ben Hynds, who was 3 for 3 on PATs in 2013.

Austin Kilcullen set a new ACU single-season record for punting average with a

mark of 44.2 yards per punt in 2013, an average that would have led the Southland

Conference by almost two yards per punt and would have ranked 14th in the FCS

statistical rankings. Kilcullen had 11 punts of at least 50 yards with a long of 64 yards

against Illinois State.

snapper and Collums believes he could be one of the best in the league.



he 2014 season will mark Ken Collums’ third season as

the 19th head football coach in ACU history.

In his fi rst season as the head coach (2012), he led the

Wildcats to a 7-4 record in their fi nal season as a member of

NCAA Division II and the Lone Star Conference.

Last year in ACU’s fi rst season at the NCAA Division I

FCS level, Collums’ off ense was one of the nation’s most

prolifi c. While he gave up play-calling duties to off ensive

coordinator Nathan Young in 2013, Collums still had an

impact on the design and implementation of game plans

and play calls each week.

ACU’s 501 points scored were the fourth-most in a season

in program history behind 2007 (639

points), 2008 (628 points) and 2010

(520 points). Th e Wildcats’ 84 points

scored against Concordia (Ala.) in the

season-opener are the second-most

points scored in a game in program

history behind the 93 scored on Nov. 22,

2008, in ACU’s 93-68 NCAA Division II

playoff win over West Texas A&M.

Th e Wildcats scored at least 60

points in four games during the season,

hit the 50-point mark in one other game

and the 40-point mark in another. Th e

Wildcats posted a plus-17 turnover

margin, one of the top marks in all of NCAA Division I

football. And for the fi fth time since 2007, the Wildcats posted

at least 5,300 yards of total off ense as ACU fi nished with 5,359

total yards for an average of 487.2 yards per game.

As the quarterbacks coach, Collums continued to display

his mastery over the position as he led senior starter John

David Baker to one of the greatest seasons by a quarterback in

ACU history.

Baker fi nished his only season as the Wildcats’ starter with

3,376 passing yards in 2013, which is the fourth-best single-

season total in school history. His 247 completions are the

fourth-most in a season in ACU history, and his 369 attempts

are tied for the 10th-most in a season. His 35 touchdowns are

the fourth-most in a season in ACU history, and his 35-to-5

touchdown-to-interception ratio is the second-best in program

history behind the 38:3 ratio posted by Mitchell Gale in 2010.

His 3,632 yards of total off ense are the fourth-most in a

season in ACU history, as are the 468 total off ensive plays he

took part in during the season. Baker posted two of the top

eight single-game yardage totals in ACU history in 2013.

His 485-yard eff ort in the season fi nale at Prairie View A&M

is the third-best single-game total in program history, while

his 428-yard performance against New Mexico State is the

eighth-best single-game performance in program history.

Baker accounted for fi ve touchdowns against Prairie

View A&M (four passing and one rushing) to give him 40

touchdowns accounted for in 2013 (35 passing and fi ve

rushing), which is a new single-season school record. Baker set

a school record in the season-opener with seven touchdown

passes against Concordia, breaking the old record of six set

originally by Clint Longley in 1973 and later tied by Billy

Malone in 2006 and then again in 2008.

And in the Wildcats’ 60-17 win over McMurry on

Sept. 7, Baker ran for 102 yards and a touchdown to become

the fi rst Wildcat quarterback since Nov. 20, 1965, when Jacky

Roland ran for 119 yards and one score on nine carries against

Angelo State.

Collums – the FootballScoop.com D2 Coordinator of the

Year in 2010 – served as the off ensive coordinator at ACU from

2005-11, directing some of the most exciting and dominant

off ensive units in NCAA Division II history.

Collums’ two starting quarterbacks from 2005-12 – Billy

Malone (2005-08) and Mitchell Gale (2009-12) – are two of

the most productive quarterbacks in both ACU and NCAA

Division II history. Th e pair combined to throw for 24,121

yards (12,012 for Malone and 12,109 for Gale), and Gale left

ACU as the all-time leader in yards, completions and attempts

in ACU and LSC history, while Malone is the LSC and ACU

career leader in touchdown passes.

When Gale topped the 12,000-yard mark in 2012, it made

ACU just the fourth program in NCAA collegiate football

history to have back-to-back starting quarterbacks throw for

more than 12,000 career yards as ACU joined Hawaii (Timmy

Chang and Cole Brennan), Houston (Kevin Kolb and Case

Keenum) and Louisiana Tech (Tim Rattay and Luke McCown)

on the short list.

During their seven seasons with Collums as the off ensive

coordinator, the Wildcats averaged 468.4 yards of off ense and

39 points per game, while achieving near perfect balance in

run-pass play selection. In the 82 games the Wildcats played

from 2005-11, they ran the ball 2,874 times and threw it 2,857

times while gaining 38,412 yards in those games.

Since he re-joined the ACU coaching staff prior to the 2005

season, Collums’ off enses have ranked among the best in the

nation. Th e Wildcats have ranked in the top seven in NCAA

Division II football in total off ense fi ve times in the last eight

years, including fi rst in 2008, second in 2007, third in 2011 and

fourth in 2006. Th e pass off ense has ranked third twice and sixth

twice, and the rushing off ense has ranked as high as ninth in the

nation (2008).

Th e Wildcats’ scoring off ense under Collums has ranked

fi rst in both 2007 and 2008 (when ACU scored a combined

1,267 points in 25 games), second in 2010 and sixth in 2006.

Under Collums, “ball security” became one of the catch phrases

surrounding the program, and the Wildcats turned the ball over

only 122 times from 2005-11, including just eight times in 2010

and nine in 2006.

In his 82 games as the Wildcats’ off ensive coordinator, ACU

scored between 30 and 39 points in 18 games, between 40-49

points 22 times, between 50-59 points 14 times, between 60-69

points three times, 70-79 points twice and hit 93 in a 2008 NCAA

Division II playoff game against West Texas A&M.

In 2007 and 208, Collums called the plays for one of the

greatest off ensive units in the history of college football. Under

his guidance, ACU scored 1,267 points (50.7 ppg) and racked up

13,772 yards of total off ense (550.9 ypg) in the 25 games covering

those two seasons and ACU went 21-4 in those games, won the

Lone Star Conference championship in 2008 and saw Bernard

Scott win the Harlon Hill Award as the top player in NCAA

Division II football and Sam Collins win the Gene Upshaw Award

as the top lineman in NCAA Division II football.

In the greatest off ensive game in LSC and ACU history,

Collums led ACU to 93 points in a 93-68 win over West Texas

A&M in the second round of the 2008 NCAA Division II playoff s.

ACU posted a school-record 810 yards of total off ense and scored

touchdowns on 13 of 15 possessions on their way to a remarkable

25-point win over the Buff aloes. ACU’s off ense set 29 NCAA

Division II single-game, NCAA Division II playoff single-game,

LSC and ACU records in the record-setting rout.

In 2007, ACU became the fi rst program in the history of

NCAA football to boast a 3,500-yard passer (Billy Malone),

2,000-yard rusher (Bernard Scott) and two 1,000-yard receivers

(Johnny Knox and Jerale Badon) in the same season. In fact,

ACU’s off ense in 2008 set or tied or was part of 78 NCAA, LSC or

Wildcat single-game, season or career records.

“When I look back at our off ense over the last several years,

the No. 1 thing I’m proud of is our consistency,” Collums said.

“I tell our guys all the time that it doesn’t matter what we

do – whether we’re throwing it or running it – we have to protect

the ball. And at times over those seven years we have been the

best at protecting the ball. And that comes from total buy-in from

players, and that makes me proud because that lets me know that

they’re buying into what we’re telling them.”

While coaching at Central Arkansas, Collums led the Bears to

some of the greatest off ensive seasons in school history.

Collums coached an off ensive attack that averaged 300 yards

passing per game in three of his last four seasons at UCA. Th e

Bears were the nation’s top passing team in 2001, averaging 373

yards per game. UCA fi nished in the top 10 in total off ense in four

of the last six seasons.

In 2002 – Collums’ fi rst year as off ensive coordinator –

the Bears were No. 8 nationally in points per game (37.5), No. 3

in passing yards per game (310.5) and No. 9 in total off ense

(446 yards per game). In 2004, UCA featured a balanced attack

that racked up 38 points per game (No. 14), 477.7 yards per game

(No. 6), 269 passing yards per game (No. 19) and 208.5 rushing

yards per game (No. 26).

As a freshman at Central Arkansas, Collums led the Bears

|to the 1991 NAIA national championship. In four seasons as the

starting quarterback, he directed his team to a combined record

of 30-8-3. Collums graduated from Central Arkansas in 1995 with

a B.S. in kinesiology. He received his master’s A native of Vernon,

Collums played for the Vernon Lions of former coach Leo Brittain,

leading his team to a 29-2-1 record in his fi nal two seasons as the

starting quarterback. Collums led Vernon to the Class 3A state

title in 1990.

He and his wife, Robyn, have two children, a daughter, Anna,

and a son, Layne. ■
