Motley Fool Asset Management’s Data-Rich, User-Friendly Site

Issue: Creating a Site That Works for the FoolishMotley Fool Asset Management (MFAM) is a boutique, shareholder-centric, asset management firm established in 2009 by financial-services company The Motley Fool. MFAM came to Excella to help create a separate web presence to expand their brand and also be compliant with regulators.

They knew that they wanted to include information on their mutual funds, as well as to host the insightful content and analysis that Motley Fool customers are accustomed to. The challenge they faced? Exactly what to build and how.

The Solution: Start With the End-UserTogether, MFAM and Excella established requirements that would cater to shareholders who needed to purchase funds, track performance and holdings, and download applications – yet also have the unique content and transparency they expected from a Motley Fool subsidiary.

Using Agile practices, Excella leveraged Python/Django on a cloud-hosted infrastructure to deliver an interactive website that matched MFAM’s corporate values: straightforward, data-rich, customer-centric, and built for the long-term. The back-end leveraged Morningstar data for quotes and financial information, and is completely automated, eliminating the need for manual updates by staff.

The Result: Transparent, User-Focused and Built to LastThe new site represents the Motley Fool brand, meets regulatory requirements, and supports MFAM’s desire for transparency. Rather than posting only the top 10 mutual fund holdings as mandated by the SEC, MFAM publishes each fund’s full holdings. Interactive shareholder calls are accessible through the site via streaming video. Automated processes limit the time staff spends on website maintenance so they can get back to doing what they do best – traveling the world to produce the useful content that sets MFAM apart from its competitors.

myUSCIS: Reimagining How Government Works

Issue: Creating a New Vision for Immigration ServicesThe U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has a monumental mission: to protect the American dream by providing information, granting benefits, and promoting understanding of citizenship to over 14 million people every year. For years this process relied on a complicated system of forms and phone calls, leading to huge backlogs for USCIS staff and frustration for its customers.

Taking a cue from digital giants like Google and Amazon, USCIS developed myUSCIS.gov: an integrated online experience that simplifies and streamlines the immigration process. Agency leaders worked side-by-side with their customers to design a solution that was accessible, informative, and highly personal – providing a digital gateway for the next generation of Americans. They created a team of innovators, including 18F, U.S. Digital Services (USDS), and Excella, to turn this dream into a reality.

The Solution: Agile, Open-Source, and DevOps Provide a Path to SuccessUSCIS could not wait years to deliver a solution, so they adopted modern processes like Agile, DevOps, and Continuous Delivery to deliver value early and often. Excella led small Agile teams to engineer the site using iterative, two-week sprints that involved customers and staff from across the agency. Our development team also used a range of open-source technologies to provide future scalability, including Ruby on Rails, Java, and Chef.

Agile DevOps and Continuous Delivery in the Amazon Web Services cloud were crucial components of the successful myUSCIS deployment. The Excella team delivered quickly with consistent results by automating tests, versioning infrastructure as code, and deploying applications automatically.

The Result: A Solution Built to ServeThe result is myUSCIS (my.uscis.gov), an innovative website designed to change lives and revolutionize the future of government IT services. Through an understanding of customer needs and a dedication to leading edge technology, the Excella team worked with USCIS and its partners to change how software is developed, managed, and approved at the agency. This type of transformational thinking will impact the way IT solutions are designed and developed across the government – ushering in a new era of innovative services.

Ovarian Cancer National Alliance

Issue: Showcasing Data for Maximum ImpactOCNA is an organization with a big mission – to advance the interests of women with ovarian cancer. Their mission includes connecting patients, caregivers, and survivors to the information and resources they need as well as advocating to ensure that ovarian cancer and women’s health issues top of mind for legislators and decisions-makers here in Washington and around the country.

To support their mission, OCNA developed 50 States of Teal: Ovarian Cancer Care Across America, a set of metrics to assess how well women in each state are connected to the services they need to prevent, detect, and combat the disease. In order to have the greatest impact on their stakeholders, OCNA needed to showcase the information in an engaging format that was accessible and easy to use. They called on Excella to build a digital solution that could tell their story through data while being mindful of their timelines, budget, and the highly personalized nature of their work. Our team jumped at the chance to support this project!

The Solution: An Agile Approach Delivers an Interactive SolutionExcella created an agile project roadmap to deliver a comprehensive solution to OCNA in just four months. The team brought on a project manager, visual designer, and developers from the Excella Extension Center to create a flexible solution that fit OCNA’s needs and budget. OCNA’s team was engaged every step of the way to provide feedback and guidance for the project while they worked to build out their additional programs.

The Result: A Tool Built To Engage, Inspire and Foster ChangeThe Excella team built an interactive map with an Angular front-end to showcase the State Report Card information and allow for responsive design and scalability. The back-end leveraged Django to manage the database and provide a content management system that is easy for OCNA staff to access and update regularly. The design reflects OCNA’s “50 States of Teal” branding and allows users to quickly and easily drill down in to specific information about their state.

Make the Most of Your IT InvestmentsSuccessful IT implementations create two outcomes all businesses strive for: value and efficiency. The investments you make in IT can be successful if your projects are managed well. However, many PMOs focus solely on check-the-box stuff, things that are required (like status reports and project plans), but don’t solve problems or get results. Successful PMOs get things done by focusing on value, interacting with people and adapting to change.

We’ve managed projects and run PMOs for organizations of all shapes and sizes, and we know that adding value requires knowing all aspects of a project. Yet despite this preparation, things change. They always change. That’s why we take an Agile approach to project management, creating an environment where all sides are communicating and working toward the same goal.

We specialize in:

• Agile Program Management

• Agile Project Management

• Change Management

• Communications

Excella’s Extension Center

A New School of ThoughtAmerica has a shortage of workers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Universities can teach concepts, but cannot always provide real-world experience. Excella’s Extension Centers take STEM education one step further.

Located on campus at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, our Extension Center engages high-achieving technical students to provide remote software development and support to our client delivery teams. Students are vetted for the skills and technical aptitude needed by our clients in the federal, commercial, and non-profit sectors. Our student team members work part-time under the direct supervision of our experienced developers and consultants.

The Extension Center approach allows us to assemble teams with the optimal combination of on-site and campus-based team members – often saving our clients time and money while creating real-world opportunities for students in technology fields.

XC clients include:• Peace Corps

• Ovarian Cancer National Alliance

• PIAA

• USCIS
