A S PECIAL THAN K YOU to the City of New Orleans for its
leadership in creating this great public space, and to the New
Orleans Recreation Development Commission (NORD) for its
management of the Lafitte Greenway.
T H E L A F I T T E G R E E N WAY
is a 2.6-mile bicycle and pedestrian
trail connecting historic New Orleans
neighborhoods from Armstrong Park to City
Park. Opened in 2015, the Lafitte Greenway
features sports fields, playgrounds,
grassy lawns, 500 newly planted trees,
energy-efficient lighting, and innovative
stormwater management features.
H E RE , TH E CIT Y O F N E W O RLE AN S has transformed one
of its most historic transportation and commercial routes into a
vibrant linear park. Early French explorers chose New Orleans’
location because of its proximity to Bayou St. John, which
provided access to Lake Pontchartrain and the Gulf of Mexico.
In 1794, the Spanish Governor of Louisiana built the Carondelet
Canal, connecting the Bayou to the edge of the city (today’s
French Quarter) and creating a thriving waterway and preferable
route for commercial ships to enter New Orleans with their daily
transport of oysters, lumber, charcoal, and building materials. The
Southern Railway constructed a railroad line adjacent to this canal
in the early 20th century. Canal maintenance proved difficult, and
maritime commerce declined in the corridor, resulting in the canal
being filled. In the mid-twentieth century, the once vital railroad
line in the heart of the city was largely decommissioned, leaving
the land vacant until its rebirth as the Lafitte Greenway.

BY BIKE The Greenway is the central artery of New Orleans’
burgeoning bicycle network—120+ miles and growing. Hop on
your bike, or a Blue Bike—New Orleans bike share—to explore the
Greenway. Check out the New Orleans Bike Map at bikeeasy.org for
more connector routes.
BY BUS Dozens of New Orleans Regional Transit Authority buses
connect to the Greenway. Visit norta.com for details. Transit tip:
There is no additional cost or pass needed to use the bicycle racks
on RTA buses.
BY STREETCAR The Canal Streetcar-City Park/Museum stops
on the Greenway at Carrollton Ave. Ready to hop off early?
Any Canal St. stop from Rampart to Alexander will do, as Canal
parallels the Greenway. Walk 4 blocks northeast/downriver to
connect to the trail. Streetcars do not have bike racks, but folding
bicycles are welcome on board.
FROM THE FRENCH QUARTER Pick up the Greenway at the
Basin Street Trailhead, one block from the French Quarter at the
intersection of Basin St. and St. Louis St. This trailhead is located
where the site of the historic Carondelet Canal turning basin once
stood (and where Basin Street gets its name).

ABOUT FRIENDS OF LAFITTE GREENWAY
In early 2005, a couple of friends watched workers pull up ties on a
long-abandoned railroad line running through their Mid-City New
Orleans neighborhood, and it sparked an idea: to transform this
vacant land into a new park and path for their community. Friends
of Lafitte Greenway was born. What began in the minds of those
friends grew into a non-profit and community-wide advocacy
initiative to create a new public space that would connect people
to the great outdoors and to each other and engender economic,
environmental, health, and cultural benefits for New Orleans.
Friends of Lafitte Greenway is the community’s and the city’s
nonprofit partner working to create a vibrant and healthy Greenway
that connects people to nature, their destinations, and each other.
Our mission is to build, program, and promote the Lafitte Greenway
as a great public space.
