Design a space, in 4x4 meters square that would only be dedicated to meditation. The openings had to be carefully managed and the income of natural light needed to be subtle. I have developed a way to filter natural light and bring it into the meditation space without allowing to see the outside from the center of the square. The hidden entrance also contributes to making this space introverted enough to encourage meditation.

8

We had to design an appartement for a family composed of four people in a section of tunnel. We also had to allow the people that were to live in this house to enjoy the sight of the whole vaulted surface. Therefore, I decided to design a box in this tunnel that would contain four bedrooms and two bathrooms, leave the kitchen, dining room and living room open to take full advantage of this unusual space.

theat re

10

We had to design a puppet theatre in a park in Toulouse. The structure of the public part had to be light. We had to be able to welcome a hundred people and close the room if necessary. We also had to design a closed space for the artists with a parking spot.

12

Live vertically : The house we had to design is near Saint Sernin, a famous cathedral in Toulouse. The house is six meters wide, has four stories and houses a family of four people. A garden on top of the garage, behind the red pannel. This narrow house has a dynamic facade with two sliding panels that hide or reveal certain parts of the inside. On the south facade, you can see how verticality is emphasised by the staircase. In the corner of the back garden hides a pavilion in which 2 people can stay.

This is a public building we had to design forPortet-sur-Garonne, a little town close to Toulouse. It houses an exhibition space, a restaurant and a few offices. The building is like a rectangular prism that has been hollowed out, and every space can be seen from the outside.

15

This is also a public building, but this time in Villeneuvette, a village close to Montpellier. The site was sloping, and we decided to build a bridge-like entrance to allow people to come in from the main street, and also to walk under the entrance to reach the service block. The exhibition is developped on three platforms, and each one has its own lighting, its own ceiling height, and a kind of fountain makes a sound at the beginning of each platform. We really paid attention to the amount of natural light, because it is one of the most important things in an exhibition space.

This project is the very first one for which we had many constraints. First the site was sloping and right in the city centre of Cahors. Then, the choice of the process of construction : everything had to be made out of wood except for the underground structures. The conception process had also been precisely defined. We went from a scale to another quite quickly. In fact, to develop the project, we jumped from the masterplan to the plan of a single house then to the scale of the kitchen and living room and we finally jumped back to the masterplan to make the necessary adjustments for the whole project to be consistent. By doing so, we worked from the scale of 1/500 to the scale of 1/10. I also designed things that I never even had to think about in all of my previous projects, such as electricity and plumbing networks, exterior lighting, walkways in the street. This project showed me how important the details are in a project, and I have been looking for details in every project ever since.

The aim of this semester was to explore the condition of collective living through the concept of the ‘satellite apartment’ which has been emerging from switzerland and other countries in the last few years. The introduction of this concept from forward thinking Housing Associations, reflects a growing demand of individuals of a mature age or of family groups for a shared living environment which provides both a degree of privacy and of community within a non-familial household. Independence is achieved through a set of small private spaces which are separate but in close proximity to larger shared spaces. We had to design a building combining two functions : public facility and collective housing. We went to visit the site and decided to design a building for children including a reading area, a sleeping area, classrooms and areas for outdoor activities. The appartments also had to have something special, therefore we started by designing the living room in the centre of the apartment and then we connected the private spaces all around it.

hote l

24

The goal of this project was to design a hotel and set it in front of the Russel Glacier, East of Sissimiut in Greenland. The institute we had to design this project for was specialised in micro-structures. This is one of the reasons why we were encouraged to develop micro homes to serve as hotelrooms. We then organised them on each side of a communal building that uses the same design concept and houses a restaurant, a reception office and a lounge. The urban planning was very important to us, we designed pathways that seem to be floating over the ice and the basic shape represented by the masterplan is a crack in an iceberg.

solar rock

plan cut at 1,92m

plan cut at 1,92m

26

Solar Rock was the micro home we designed to be used as a hotelroom in the glacier hotel project. This shape was chosen because we wanted to cover the volume with solar panels, and this cube tilted on an angle is the most efficient shape to take advantage of the all-day sun in Greenland. The size of the faces is also related to the solar panels’ dimensions as each face is composed of eight 0.8x1.6m panels. Moreover, considering the extremely small size of the inside space, we had been told that this surface of solar panels would be more than enough to make this hotelroom self sufficient.Technical spaces have also been managed under the seats, and they are accessible from the outside as well as from the inside, to welcome a water tank, and other technical features. Four functions are clearly identified : sleep, hygiene, food prep and work. Here, the sleep function sits on top of the work and hygiene functions. It was the first time I achieved such a level of precision in a design.

Ponts JumeauxToulouse

inhabited park

28

masterplan

The site was at Ponts Jumeaux, a famous area in Toulouse. The first thing we found when we gathered documents about this area was a satellite picture on which we saw something we interpreted as three different levels. We then decided to emphasise these levels and to inhabit these platforms. The surface becomes a park on which we put nothing but trees, grass and places for people to meet. There is also a line that breaks the two upper platforms open and allows you to measure the thickness of the platforms and to see the activity that takes place in it.

underground organisation plan

The underground plan has been the best part of my work in this project, and the difficulty was for the organisation to look random and organic, while being part of a well organised grid system. All the elements of this project fit the grid, and all the dimensions are sub-divisions of the grid, like parking spaces, patios, main and secondary underground circulations and plazas. On the edges of the platforms, we adopted a concept of material displacement to manage public spaces and a staircase to connect the different levels.

Living underground. This project is related to the urban project presented on the previous page. It was necessary to design apartments that got natural light only from one side and are located underground. Everything had to be consistent with the global concept of the inhabited park. Six different apartments are available. Two are five meters long, two are seven meters long and two are ten meters long. There are two versions of each length because one has only one storey and the other has two stories. Storage areas and humid spaces are located on the perimeter of the apartments, while the other spaces are attached to them and separated from the facade to let more daylight in the depth of the living area.

plan L.3

The B18 is a building dedicated to scientific research. Since its construction, technology has evolved, and so have needs and expectations. A coat is most of the time quite expensive, but it seems even more expensive if it doesn’t have any pockets. The purpose of the research programme “enveloppe habitable” was to make the building more energy efficient, but to offer more than just a new layer of insulation and a beautiful pattern on the facade. I wanted to give more space to the people working in the B18, give the building a new usable thickness to meet the new identified needs and complete the activity taking place in the offices and research labs.

My work was about multiplying the possibilities in this workspace. The circulation around the existing area defines working plots. We kept the existing organisation of the offices because it was suitable for the function but opened them towards the outside, in order for them to see what is happening outside and enjoy the activity. On the south facade, new functions are taking place in the new thickness of the skin to meet the new needs of a work in the field of research in a university.

These activities are for example storage areas, cooking areas, places to relax, indoor and outdoor gardens, and most importrantly, place to hang one’s work to share informations. All these new cells include integrated furniture, and contribute to making workspaces more enjoyable and more efficient at the same time. The whole process also includes ventilation spaces, that are very important to regulate the temperature of the whole building while creating new interesting views.

When I was an intern at Muck Petzet Architekten in Munich, I contributed to the development of a day clinic for patients with a mental condition. The volume is shaped to communicate best with the main street and the back yard. There is also a patio in the building that gives the patients a safer exterior space. The facade is composed of modules, to minimize the costs, but we decided to arrange them randomly to make the main facade more dynamic. The clinic is currently under construction.

The client assigned us with the design of a project in Dingxi, a city near Lanzhou in the Gansu Province. The project is composed of housing buildings, two office towers and a hotel tower, a school and a big commercial center. An empty space next to our site is soon to be the new people’s square, so we decided to consider it as such from the beginning, and connect it to our project as well as possible. The high density proposal we made reflects the increasing dynamic of this area. The three towers are set along the main street, giving it an interesting rhythm as well as a great vertical scale. The commercial center is split in three parts, one constitutes the pedestal of the three towers, while the two others constitute the northern and southern wings. The space created in between is a public space on two levels, the ground floor and the first underground floor. Housing buildings are both located in the north and south, and the school is on the western end of the site. The meticulous care we treated the parks and the public commercial spaces with, makes them extremely pleasant spaces for people to experience.

The clients’ needs for the Huiyuan project were as interesting as they were complex. The complexity of the proposal is brought by the fact that we had to combine modular offices, office towers, offices for the administration of the area, a hotel tower, a commercial center, research and development workshops for Volkswagen as well as housing buildings on the same plot. The master plan is simple but very dynamic. It follows a slightly tilted orthogonal grid that gives each space thus created its own particularity. In spite of the density of our proposal we wanted the core of the project to have a very human scale. The Volkswagen workshops are located on the south part of the site, the housing area on the west ; the commercial center, the hotel tower and the three office towers punctuate the main street, showing the strength of the project while giving the project an interesting vertical rhythm. The modular offices occupy the remaining space around the center of the plot. The space created in the center becomes a very active node with its public park, administration offices, service areas and sport facilities for people working on site.

Yindaruqin

Located near Lanzhou (Gansu, China), this project is Yindaruqin’s headquarters. This project contains nonetheless many other elements, for instance a hotel, a restaurant, laboratories and apartments for experts, a shopping center, an exhibition space and dwellings. The housing area is on the northern part of the site. The commercial center and the laboratories are located on the south-western part, the south eastern part is occupied by the exhibition space and the experts’ apartments while the main building stands right in between. The main building contains the hotel, the restaurant and the company’s offices. The pattern on the facade is an interpretation of the course of water, the glass as a symbol for water interacts with the mineral character of the local stone. A subtle proportion between opacity and transparency gives the facade a greater dynamic.

44 |

The city of Jiayuguan is planning to develop towards the south of the existing city. Our assignment was to organize five plots with different functions. From west to east you can find : a plot with dwellings and a commercial center, a plot with offices, a plot with citizen facilities including a new City Hall, a plot open to the public with public spaces, an exhibition center and a people’s square, and the last plot is an administrative plot with a court house, archives and a police station. The buildings fit a grid that we developed on the site, whereas a great curved line interacts with the orthogonal grid while outlining the main pedestrian pathway. We took particularly good care of the design of the administration buildings to give Jiayuguan’s new district a neat and powerful image, and also give the citizens a better environment.

Images are very important to communicate. And even if I learned how to communicate without them, with only texts to explain and develop a project, they are still easily understandable and easy to take out of their context. So here are a few samples of images I made for the School of Architecture and for Muck Petzet Architekten München.

Bildnerisches Gestalten is an optional course I took when I was studying in Munich. It litterally means design in image. We had to express the atmosphere of a famous place in Munich : Karlsplatz (Stachus). We were first asked to draw what the sounds meant to us, then we worked in teams on a sculpture and in the end we had to make a sculpture individually. All of the works we did for this course meant exactly the same thing. You can distinguish a grid, for the repetitive and mechanical noises like tramways, busses, cars and subways, and then transparent tights to express the unpredictable noises, made by birds, people walking or cycling. These two materials interact, disturb and hold each other together.

l i v i n g r o o m

This was another project for Bildnerisches Gestalten. We had to work on an Ausgangspunkt, or a last stop of a subway line in Munich. We chose to work on the station Klinikum Großhadern (on line U6) because there is a park that nobody uses or even walks through even though it is really pleasant.People also usually run from the subway to their car bus or bicycle. We therefore decided to invite them to, as the postcard I made says, learn to stop before they move on. We bought armchairs, a table, a lamp and a carpet to set a living room in the middle of this unused park, and live this change of transportation a different way. We made a movie out of our performance, and when we set this living room in the Königsaal to play the movie, many people were impressed by the success our outdoor living room had.
