e) Paving the Road to Yamaha Motor Corporation

"I want to carry out trial manufacture of motorcycle engines." It was from these words spoken by GenichiKawakami (Yamaha Motor's first president) in 1953, that today's Yamaha Motor Company was born.

"If you're going to do something, be the best."

Genichi Kawakami

Genichi Kawakami was the first son of Kaichi Kawakami, the third-generation president of Nippon Gakki(musical instruments and electronics; presently Yamaha Corporation). Genichi studied and graduated fromTakachiho Higher Commercial School in March of 1934. In July of 1937, he was the second Kawakami to  join the Nippon Gakki He quickly rose to positions of manager of the company's Tenryu Factory Company (musical instruments) andthen Senior General Manager, before assuming the position of fourth-generation President in 1950 at theyoung age of 38.

In 1953, Genichi was looking for a way to make use of idle machining equipment that had previously beenused to make aircraft propellers. Looking back on the founding of Yamaha Motor Company, Genichi had thisto say "While the company was performing well and had some financial leeway, I felt the need to look for our next area of business. So, I did some research." He explored producing many products, including sewingmachines, auto parts, scooters, three-wheeled utility vehicles, and motorcycles. Market and competitive factorsled him to focus on the motorcycle market. Genichi actually visited the United States many times during thisperiod.

When asked about this decision, he said, "I had my research division chief and other managers visit leadingmotorcycle factories around the country. They came back and told me there was still plenty of opportunity, even if we were entering the market late. I didn't want to be completely unprepared in this unfamiliar businessso we toured to German factories before setting out to build our first 125cc bike. I joined in this tour aroundEurope during which my chief engineers learned how to build motorbikes. We did as much research as

possible to insure that we could build a bike as good as any out there. Once we had that confidence, we startedgoing."

"If you are going to make it, make it the very best there is." With these words as their motto, the developmentteam poured all their energies into building the first prototype, and ten months later in August of 1954 the firstmodel was complete. It was the Yamaha YA-1. The bike was powered by an air-cooled, 2-stroke, single

cylinder 125cc engine. Once finished, it was put through an unprecedented 10,000 km endurance test to ensurethat its quality was top-class. This was destined to be the first crystallization of what has now become a longtradition of Yamaha creativity and an inexhaustible spirit of challenge.

The first Yamaha motorcycle... the YA-1.

Then, in January of 1955 the Hamakita Factory of Nippon Gakki was built and production began on the YA-1. With confidence in the new direction that Genichi was taking, Yamaha Motor Co. Ltd. was founded onJuly 1, 1955. Staffed by 274 enthusiastic employees, the new motorcycle manufacturer built about 200 unitsper month.

That same year, Yamaha entered its new YA-1 in the two biggest race events in Japan. They were the 3rd Mt.Fuji Ascent Race and the 1st Asama Highlands Race. In these debut races Yamaha won the 125cc class andthe following year the YA-1 won again in both the Light and Ultra-light classes of the Asama Highlands Race.

By 1956, a second model was ready for production. This was the YC1, a 175cc single cylinder two-stroke. In1957 Yamaha began production of its first 250cc, two-stroke twin, the YD1.

Based on Genichi's firm belief that a product isn't a product until it can hold it's own around the world, in 1958Yamaha became the first Japanese maker to venture into the international race arena. The result was animpressive 6th place in the Catalina Grand Prix race in the USA. News of this achievement won immediaterecognition for the high level of Yamaha technology not only in Japan but among American race fans, as well. This was only the start, however.

The first Yamaha to compete in America (1957).

Yamaha took quick action using the momentum gained in the USA and began marketing their motorcyclesthrough an independent distributor in California. In 1958, Cooper Motors began selling the YD-1 250 and theMF-1 (50cc, two-stroke, single cylinder, step through street bike). Then in 1960, Yamaha InternationalCorporation began selling motorcycles in the USA through dealers.

With the overseas experiences under his belt, in 1960, Genichi then turned his attention to the Marine industry

and the production of the first Yamaha boats and outboard motors. This was the beginning of an aggressiveexpansion into new fields utilizing the new engines and FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastic) technologies. Thefirst watercraft model was the CAT-21, followed by the RUN-13 and the P-7 123cc outboard motor.

In 1963, Yamaha demonstrated its focus on cutting-edge, technological innovations by developing the Autolube System. This landmark solution was a separate oil injection system for two-stroke models, eliminating theinconvenience of pre-mixing fuel and oil.

Yamaha was building a strong reputation as a superior manufacturer which was reflected in its first projectcarried out in the new Iwata, Japan Plant, built in 1966. (The YMC headquarters was moved to Iwata in1972.) Toyota and Yamaha teamed up to produce the highly regarded Toyota 2000 GT sports car. This verylimited edition vehicle, still admired for its performance and craftsmanship, created a sensation amongenthusiast in Japan and abroad.

Genichi said, "I believe that the most important thing when building a product is to always keep in mind thestandpoint of the people who will use it." An example of the commitment to "walking in the customers' shoes"was the move in 1966 by Yamaha to continue its expansion. Overseas motorcycle manufacturing wasestablished in Thailand and Mexico. In 1968, the globalization continued with Brazil and the Netherlands. With manufacturing bases, distributors and R&D operations in a market, Yamaha could be involved ingrassroots efforts to build products that truly met the needs of each market by respecting and valuing thedistinct national sensibilities and customs of each country. Yamaha continues that tradition, today.

By the late 1960s, Yamaha had quality products that had proven themselves in the global marketplace basedon superior performance and innovation. Distribution and product diversity were on the right track. ButGenichi knew that beyond quality, success would demand more. He had this view on the power of originalideas. "In the future, a company's future will hinge on ideas over and above quality. Products that have no

character, nothing unique about them, will not sell no matter how well made or affordableand that wouldspell doom for any company."

He also knew that forward vision, walking hand in hand with original ideas, would create an opportunity for the company and its customers that could mean years of happiness and memorable experiences. Genichi said,"In the business world today, so many people are obsessed with figures. They become fixated on the numbersof the minute and without them are too afraid to do any real work. But in fact, every situation is in flux frommoment to moment, developing with a natural flow. Unless one reads that flow, it is impossible to start out ina new field of business."A real-world illustration of this belief is the Yamaha DT-1. The world's first true off-road motorcycle debuted in 1968 to create an entirely new genre we know today as trail bikes. The DT-1 madea huge impact on motorcycling in the USA because it was truly dirt worthy. Yamaha definitely "read the flow"when it produced the 250cc, single cylinder, 2-stroke, Endure that put Yamaha On/Off-Road motorcycles onthe map in the USA. The DT-1 exemplified the power of original ideas, forward vision, and quick action

coupled with keeping in mind the customers' desires.

In years to come Yamaha continued to grow (and continues to this day). Diversity increased with the additionof products including snowmobiles, race kart engines, generators, scooters, ATV's, personal watercraft andmore.Genichi Kawakami set the stage for Yamaha Motor Company's success with his vision and philosophies.Total honesty towards the customer and making products that hold their own enables the company that servespeople in thirty-three countries, to provide an improved lifestyle through exceptional quality, high performanceproducts.

Genichi Kawakami's history with Yamaha was long and rich. He saw the new corporate headquarters inCypress, California and the 25th Anniversary of Yamaha become a reality in 1980. He also watched bike #20million roll off the assembly line in 1982. Genichi passed away on May 25, 2002 yet his vision lives on throughthe people and products of Yamaha, throughout the world.

Racing Instinct. - Passing on the ´R seriesµ DNA -

- Humachine Technologies & Sensual Racing Form -

The YZF-R1 and YZF-R6 are equipped with under cowls that are based on the image of a diffuser, to givethem the best form for aero-management. These are not cowls for simply enclosing the engine, but formscomposed of blade surfaces that actively control airflow. This spirit has been directly inherited by the YZF-R15.

´Harmony between rider and machine.µ YAMAHA's Human Technology involves studying the form of themotorcycle actually in motion with the rider on it. The R series is the embodiment of 1) a wide frontal spacethat protects the rider, 2) an easy to ride seating area that gives riders the freedom of movement and allowsthem to steer effectively, 3) the glamorous tail treatment that takes into account the management of airflow behind the rider, and 4) a sensual racing form that brings all 3 of these elements together in a harmoniouspackage. These characteristics have been splendidly reproduced in the YZF-R15.

Additionally, the designs were developed in the same modeling room where YZF-R1 designers worked.Information was shared, ensuring that the R lineage would be transmitted. In addition, the model alsoincorporates a multitude of adjustments for the Indian market including seat shape that allows for tandemriding (integrated with the main seat), tandem grips that are easy to grip and also contribute to the supersportdesign, and a riding position that takes into account comfort, etc. In other words, the YZF-R15 ischaracterized by a hybrid design that combines the world-class design of the ´Rµ series with localizedfunctions. The YZF-R15 was created to lead the supersport category in India.

Liquid-cooled

One characteristic of YZF-R15·s new engine is that it is liquid-cooled. The engine is surrounded by a water  jacket in which coolant liquid circulates to cool the engine. While this method is widely used in automobilesand large capacity motorcycles, there are very few examples of motorcycles of this class due to increasedweight from components such as radiators. YZF-R15 uses a special compact and lightweight aluminumradiator and a body design that utilizes airflow for heat dissipation. This has enabled us to create a lightweight, compact body while retaining its stable performance.

The benefits of using this method include stable performance during long-distance, high-speed riding and hillclimbing. A liquid-cooled engine does not need heat-dissipating fins and therefore the engine is able to deliver its best performance without being affected by temperature. Additionally, because the head and cylinder areenclosed in a water jacket, mechanical noise from the engine is reduced dramatically.

The newly developed engine delivers agile riding performance, and excellent performance on straight stretchesof road as well as on winding roads. YZF-R15 also delivers excellent environmental performance. These traitsare a must for an ´urban supersport.µ The ride is unprecedented in terms of both excitement and quality.

DiASil Cylinder

The DiASil Cylinder was born from YAMAHA·s world-class aluminum die casting technology.

Page 7: About India Yamaha Motor Pvt

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/about-india-yamaha-motor-pvt 7/18

DiASil Cylinders are all-aluminum cylinders made by YAMAHA·s proprietary aluminum die castingtechnology. An aluminum alloy with 20% silicon content is used to create a very hard, reliable cylinder surface, making conventional iron sleeves obsolete. As a result, the entire cylinder can be made of aluminum,a better conductor of heat, which means the cylinder delivers better heat dissipation and less weight.(Aluminum·s heat conductivity is 3.1 times that of iron.)

YZF-R15 is equipped with this all-aluminum cylinder called the DiASil Cylinder and a forged piston, the sametype of piston used in YAMAHA·s supersport bikes. The fact that both the piston and cylinder of YZF-R15 areall-aluminum ensures excellent heat dissipation, eliminates heat-induced engine power loss, and helps improvefuel efficiency. The DiASil Cylinder is given a special surface treatment to prevent oil evaporation from thecylinder·s surface and improve oil consumption. The cylinder also has excellent hardness and is considerablyresistant to wear compared to conventional iron sleeves.

Additionally, the piston is made in a forging process, the optimum way of achieving lightweight designs.Thereciprocating mass with the forged piston is approximately 20% less ( according to Yamaha test ) than with anengine of the same displacement fitted with a conventional cast aluminum piston. Resulting in an invigoratingfeeling when revving up.

Conventional pistons are typically made in a casting process where molten aluminum is cast in a mold.

YAMAHA developed its proprietary ´controlled forging technologyµ in 1997, which enables mass productionof forged aluminum pistons. These pistons have been used in sport models such as the R series. The samemanufacturing process was used to develop YZF-R15. Forged pistons retain the excellent strength of aluminum alloys because the metallurgic matrix of aluminum is not affected during the fabrication process. Therefore, the piston can be made lighter and thinner.

YZF-R15 is packed with state-of-the-art technology that is used in the world·s supersport bikes.

Engine

Liquid-cooled

First India-made model with cooling method in the Indian market! Liquid-cooled engines provide stableperformance, reduce vibrations, and offer a high quality ride.

Fuel Injection

Fuel injection is used to ensure excellent fuel efficiency as well as environmental friendliness.

The two components of the fuel injection mechanism used in YZF-R15, a) the sensors that gather informationon the engine·s operation, and b) the fuel supply system that supplies gasoline, have both been designed to belightweight and simple. The sensor component uses only 4 sensors (Red blinking points) to gather largeamounts of information relating to engine operations, which is sent to a small 26-pin ECU, which in turncalculates the optimum fuel supply. The fuel supply component consists of a small, fuel pump, modularizedregulator and filter, and a small injector, all of which come together to enable a lightweight, compact form. The injector injects finely atomized spray of fuel through 6 hole type injectors.

In order to maximize the efficiency of the fuel injector, which injects the optimum amount of fuel for differentamounts of intake air, YZF-R15 is equipped with a large 3-liter air cleaner. The duct area of the intake ductwas designed optimally to optimize the flow of intake air.

Additionally, the use of a 4-valve combustion chamber (a combustion chamber with 2 intake and exhaustvalves each) has allowed designers to layout the spark plug at the center of the combustion chamber for better flame propagation. This also increases the total valve area relative to the 2-valve chambers for improvedintake/exhaust efficiency (volumetric efficiency). YZF-R15 is fitted with a hemispherical 4-valve combustionchamber, a configuration that allows intake and exhaust valves to be laid out in the smallest size possible.

In addition, the intake and exhaust valve angles have been kept small to achieve optimum combustionchamber configuration. We also aimed at minimizing the surface area/volume ration (S/V ratio) in thecombustion chamber, which is key to improving fuel efficiency. In conjunction with the fuel injection system, this combustion chamber contributes to comfortable riding during long-distance rides as well as duringmedium to high-speed riding.

The Deltabox frame was commercialized based on the experience and know-how accumulated throughYAMAHA·s involvement in Moto GP since the early 1980s. This type of frame is currently used inYAMAHA·s R series of sport models. The engine is mounted on rigid supports; one on the head side and twoon the case side; so that the engine itself becomes a structural member contributing to body strength andrigidity. The engine·s low vibration makes rigid supports possible, ensuring low vibrations and excellent balance of rigidity. Torsional rigidity refers to the frame·s resistance to deformation when a twisting force isapplied to the pivot with the frame·s head pipe held in place.

In order to maximize the efficiency of the fuel injector, which injects the optimum amount of fuel for differentamounts of intake air, YZF-R15 is equipped with a large 3-liter air cleaner. The duct area of the intake ductwas designed optimally to optimize the flow of intake air.

YZF-R15·s engine delivers excellent response, fuel economy, is environmentally friendly and a comfortableride.

Linked type Monocross suspension

YZF-R15 is equipped with a linked type monocross suspension that delivers a comfortable ride and acushioning performance that is less prone to bottoming out. In particular, it reduces annoying ´sinkingµ whenriding tandem.

Page 11: About India Yamaha Motor Pvt

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/about-india-yamaha-motor-pvt 11/18

The linked monocross suspension consists of a link mechanism sandwiched between the rear arm and cushionunit to create changes in the lever ratio based on the lever effect. When the shock absorber is almost fullyextended, the lever ratio is high and therefore the spring is soft, and the damper works softly as well. As theshock absorber strokes in, the lever ratio gradually decreases and the spring rate increases. Eventually, when itis nearly fully stroked in, the lever ratio becomes small and the spring becomes hard and strong. The damper also becomes hard. By making changes to the lever ratio in this way, we were able to achieve soft ridingcomfort as well as excellent damping under intense load conditions.

The optimization of the frame and rear arm rigidity of the Deltabox Frame combined with the effects of thelinked type monocross suspension achieve good riding comfort, agile handling, and turnability, hardly ever causing bottoming out.

As the heir to the YAMAHA R series, YZF-R15 has inherited the series· agile handling performance.

The ´Rµ Design

This characteristic of motorcycles designed by YAMAHA as represented by the R series reflects thephilosophy running through these models -- expressing performance visually.

Page 12: About India Yamaha Motor Pvt

For example, YZF-R6 shows a strong body line that springs up in a single line from the rear axle to the pivotand then to the head pipe. This is a visual expression of the straight shape of the Deltabox frame. Theseelements are a visual expression of ´frame rigidity.µ Viewed from the side, the shape created by the side paneland the upper surface of the tank creates an impression of the center of gravity shifting to the front tire. This isa visual representation of how the front tire grips the road in its sporty running performance. Needless to say,YZF-R1, with its athletic build, is also a visual expression of performance. A characteristic of the R series isthat, when you view the machine, you get a sense of its concept and performance.

This philosophy has been fully transmitted to YZF-R15. An important point to note is that this motorcycle is

not a scaled-down version of YZF-R1 or YZF-R6. YZF-R15·s design is based on having an excellent enginecooling method.

The shape of the cowling around the radiator area was determined so that the shapes of the air intake area andthe rear outlet area where the air is scooped out are optimized to improve radiator efficiency. As for the outletarea, the mid-cowl area was designed using sculpturing 3D methods to create a three dimensional shape with asense of volume. This resulted in an outlet area through which air is directed outwards with minimalresistance. We were able to present the new R series also in terms of design, and we have been able tomaximize the performance of the liquid cooled engine, which will be a first for the Indian market.

When viewed from the front, it gives a sense of volume that seems well beyond its 150cc displacement. Thisdoes not simply mean that it is voluminous, but that it is grounded in the Art of Engineering which transformsfunction into art.

A sharp form that cuts through air. Inheriting the ´R seriesµ gene.

YZF-R1 and YZF-R6 are equipped with under cowls that are based on the image of a diffuser, to give themthe best form for aero-management. These are not cowls for simply enclosing the engine, but forms composedof blade surfaces that actively control airflow. This spirit has been directly inherited by YZF-R15.
