ABOUT US THE STI GROUP began as Southeast Texas Metal Works in 1978 under the

leadership of Richard Purkey. The company’s humble beginnings included 8,000

square feet of shop space and employed just 2 people. The business started slow

but soon progressively expanded.

Mr. Purkey’s key to success was the relationships he developed and the

grassroots way of doing business. In 1989, Paul Spence was given the

responsibility of managing the company. The company is now

known as STI GROUP.

STI GROUP presently has over 500,000 square feet of indoor fabrication

facilities in nine locations. Under Mr. Spence’s leadership the

company has branched out in a multifaceted structure that is

inclusive of many industrial markets and services.

THE NEED

STI GROUP was able to assist

the Huntsman Corporation’s

F&G Outage 2013. This outage

required extensive fabrication,

replacement of parts,

maintenance, and testing.

It also needed to be

completed within a set

turnaround window and

according to The Huntsman

Corporation’s high quality

standards.

THE STI GROUP SOLUTIONSTI GROUP removed the

F-G6-3 tower and replaced the

top and bottom heads, flanges

and also added repads to the

existing nozzles. STI Group

also completed hydrotesting

and reinstallation. This work

was performed

simultaneously while working

on the fabrication of pipes,

servicing exchangers, and

performing retubes.

THE RESULTS

STI GROUP was able to deliver

high quality results within the

time frame needed.

• 7,985 feet of pipe were

fabricated

• 167,661 man hours of work

• Pulled 81 out of 106

exchangers

• Performed 12 in-house

RAIN CII BOILER INSTALLATION PROJECTCASE STUDY

MOTIVA CRUDE EXPANSION PROJECT

THE NEED

STI GROUP was selected as

the contractor to erect a Waste

Heat Boiler and all associated

equipment at Rain CII in

Sulphur, LA. The project

included the erection of

the Baghouse, Scrubber, all

Pumps, Fans, Motors and

Ductwork. The work required

the construction and

installation of over 10,000 ft.

of piping.

THE NEED

In Motiva’s quest for the

largest refinery in North

America, the infrastructure

required expansive upgrades

to the OSBL and Underground

piping. STI Group’s expertise

and extensive experience in

industrial services involving

fabrication made for a natural

fit for the project.

THE STI GROUP SOLUTIONThe entire installation project

and associated boiler work

was completed on time and

within budget.

With over 2,000 welds,

STI GROUP exceeded

expectations and industry

standards by needing only

one repair. This equated out

to a less than a 0.0005% reject

ratio.

THE STI GROUP SOLUTIONSTI GROUP rapidly mobilized a

labor force to weld thousands

of spools within an

expedient timeline to help

reach the expansion’s

completion. Handling many

moving parts required a clear

line of communication and

vast experience in project

management. These core

comprehensive boiler

installation project scope with

efficiency, quality and safety.

• Erection of New Waste Heat

HRSG Boiler and

interconnecting piping, steel

and ductwork.

• Erection of Dustex Scrubber

Baghouse and all

equipment, steel and duct

work.

THE RESULTS

The large volume of piping

exceeded 8,500 spools

ranging in size from ½” to 60”

in diameter. The welds were

closely inspected to ensure

pipe integrity and STI Group

performed at less than 1%

reject ratio maximizing

efficiency through quality.

With both carbon steel and

alloy fabrication, this level of

performance proved

impressive enough to earn

additional work.

routine maintenance and one
