hosted the delegation, which also toured a number of other key venues
including the Wales Millennium Stadium and Cardiff
Castle.
The deputy minister for culture, sport and tourism, Ken
Skates said: “We were delighted to host the Business
Visits and Event Partnership in Wales and showcase the
latest high quality facilities we have to offer. The success
of the NATO Wales Summit last autumn, along with
Wales’ growing reputation for attracting high-profile
sporting events such as the UEFA Champions League,
shows that Wales is now a compelling choice for
international business and sporting events.
“The successful partnership approach to hosting this meeting – working with
Cardiff Council, Cardiff Hoteliers, the Celtic Manor Resort and Vale Resort –
has once again enabled Wales to show that it is a serious contender in the
global events industry.”
BVEP (http://www.conference-news.co.uk/2015/06/events-industry-
lobby-group-faces-axe/) chair Michael Hirst, OBE, said: “As well as being
welcomed warmly and treated to some outstanding Welsh hospitality, it’s fair to
say that we were all extremely impressed by both the ambitions of Wales to be
a major live events destination but also the quality of the venues, infrastructure
and service. There is no doubt that Wales has so much to offer and that offer is
growing rapidly.”
The visitors were also updated on Celtic Manor Resort’s plans for its new
International Convention Centre with capacity for 4,000 delegates, while at The
Vale, delegates enjoyed a dinner at the resort’s 400-year-old Hensol Castle,
which has undergone a £10m revamp, including to its conference and exclusive
hire facilities.

Social media will be the leading topic at the next roundtable event organised by The Association of British
Professional Conference Organisers (ABPCO) which will be held at the new Exhibition Centre Liverpool.
The event will coincide with a fam trip to the city on 8th-9th September when members and delegates will have
the opportunity to be some of the first to experience ACC Liverpool’s brand new venue.
The roundtable will discuss social media marketing, how to engage with targeted audiences, build brand
loyalty, research the market and drive sales. A two-hour session led by Nicola Crossland, a board member of
ABPCO previously MD of an international events agency and social media marketing agent for companies
worldwide, is designed to offer practical guidance on improving your social media plan.
“Social media is a great marketing tool for events and event organisers. This workshop will offer practical hints
and tips to those who have taken the plunge, but need a smarter approach,” said Nicola Crossland. “We will be
using plain English to explain how to maximise accounts, build a community and design a social media strategy
that will help save time, raise your profile, build brand, generate enquiries and take the stress out of managing
your online presence.”
Shocklogic, leaders in online event management software and solutions, will also offer practical guidance on
the significance of content and how a solid content strategy is the foundation of an enquiry generating social
media campaign.
The Exhibition Centre Liverpool, opening at the start of September, is a 8,100 sqm venue capable of hosting
exhibitions, conferences, banquets, concerts and sporting events on a national and international scale. More
information on the venue can be found at www.accliverpool.comor www.exhibitioncentreliverpool.com.
Those interested in attending the fam trip and the social media roundtable should book early to avoid
disappointment by contacting Heather Lishman ([email protected]). Further information can be

Home News Agency ABPCO listening to members as they step up influence within the industry
Category: Agency & Association Created on Monday, 17 August 2015 13:30
The Association of British Professional Conference Organisers (ABPCO) is making improvements based on feedback from members in an effort to further
enhance their influence within the meetings and events industry.
The suggestions from members were collated from ABPCO’s membership engagement survey earlier this year which was launched to engage further with the
various different membership groups.
The answers were delivered to the ABPCO board and the majority of suggestions now being acted upon, or implemented, include:
- The inclusion of social media training and content strategy at events
- High level speakers at events
- Stronger focus on the association market with FAM trips planned in Liverpool, Newcastle and Belfast
- Members portal online at the ABPCO website
- A focus on congress bidding and tenders at a future event
- Microforums looking into technology within the industry
- Additional opportunities to extend the networking and social elements of events
“Whether you are a venue, destination or PCO – there are always ways you can learn and improve,” comments Heather Lishman, Association Director at ABPCO.
“ABPCO is no different and we have actively been listening and engaging with our members over the past few months to seek out ways we can enhance the association.
Suggestions have included everything from an online member’s portal on the ABPCO website to higher level speakers at events. We have listened and we are now in the
process of either delivering or acting upon the feedback.”
“It is imperative we listen to our members. Without our members and their hard work, ABPCO would not be the influence it is within the industry. These are exciting times
ahead for ABPCO and all those associated.”
