Sarah Chapman (University of Derby), Jayne Hughes (University of Ulster),
Charmaine Facey (University of Bedfordshire) and Jane
Green-Peppit (Nottingham Trent University).
The student membership category includes free
delegate places at all events. The events give
exposure to current practices as well as networking
opportunities with industry professionals.
Heather Lishman, ABPCO association director, said:
“There has been a strong surge of university student
members in recent months. As an association we are constantly bringing our
members together to share experiences, best practice and to provide real
opportunities so the student membership is perfect for those looking to get their
foot in the door of the industry. Current student members are really benefiting
from the exposure to industry professionals and we hope it’s a membership
category that continues to grow because ABPCO recognises the importance of
university students as the future of the industry. We are encouraging their
involvement from the start of their careers to reinforce professionalism through
education and peer engagement.”
Noemi La Torre said: “The opportunity to gather experience alongside my
studies is one I am thankful for. ABPCO has not only given me the opportunity to
experience the industry firsthand, but it has already made a big impact on my
fledgling career and I am looking forward to working alongside them over the
coming months.”

Business Travel & Events Business Events Nicole Leida gives expert advice on meetings and events
Nicole Leida gives expertadvice on meetings and eventsBUSINESS EVENTS Nicole Leida is joint chair of ABPCO and Head of
Conference & Events at the National Cancer Research Institute. She
answered some pressing questions for us on business meetings and
events.
What would be your advice to event organisers?
Possibly the best bit of advice is to never stop learning. The whole industry moves quickly
especially when it comes to technology so it really is important to educate yourself. This is
highlighted by the number of education sessions at major events and part of the reason we
run roundtable events at ABPCO. Sharing knowledge and learning can only be a good thing
moving forward.
What is the main benefit of exhibiting at an event?
It really is about tapping into an otherwise unreachable market. If you are looking to promote
a service, venue or technology then there can be no better way than at an event that brings
the industry elite together under one roof. From a business perspective, you can often forge
new business links with a simple face-to-face conversation at a show. Technology is moving
on so quickly but nothing can substitute a face-to-face meeting.
What is the most important factor to get right when planning an event?
Understand your audiences! What is their motivation for attending the event? How does
that fit in with the event objectives? What are you going to deliver that meets the audiences’
expectations and gives them ROI? Keeping an open mind is everything in this business as
well as showing versatility!
Where does the future lie for meetings and events?
The industry is strong right now. The recent general election brought about questions as
what direction we may head in with a fresh government but most would admit that there is a
real hope within the industry that business will continue to increase. Meetings and events is
an important market for the UK but it can only prosper with the support of the Government
and the continued evolution from venues and event organisers.

Home News Agency ABPCO experiencing university student membership growth
Category: Agency & Association Created on Tuesday, 09 June 2015 11:00
The Association of British Professional Conference Organisers (ABPCO) is experiencing strong growth in its university student membership category from
students who are hoping to have careers in the association and not for profit side of the conference industry.
New university student members include Sarah Chapman (University of Derby), Jayne Hughes (University of Ulster), Charmaine Facey (University of
Bedfordshire) and Jane Green-Peppit (Nottingham Trent University).
The student membership category includes free delegate places at all events; these events give invaluable exposure to current practices as well as networking opportunities
with industry professionals.
“There has been a strong surge of university student members in recent months,” comments Heather Lishman, ABPCO Association Director. “As an association we are
constantly bringing our members together to share experiences, best practice and to provide real opportunities so the student membership is perfect for those looking to get
their foot in the door of the industry. Current student members are really benefiting from the exposure to industry professionals and we hope it’s a membership category that
continues to grow because ABPCO recognises the importance of university students as the future of the industry. We are encouraging their involvement from the start of
their careers to reinforce professionalism through education and peer engagement.”
To reflect the growth in this category ABPCO has co-opted Noemi La Torre, an events management student at the University of Greenwich, to the ABPCO board. Noemi will
support the association with the formulation of a social media engagement strategy whilst providing input from a student’s perspective.
“The opportunity to gather experience alongside my studies is one I am thankful for,” said Noemi La Torre. “ABPCO has not only given me the opportunity to experience the
industry firsthand, but it has already made a big impact on my fledgling career and I am looking forward to working alongside them over the coming months.”

Home News Agency Upcoming ABPCO roundtable featuring AstraZeneca expert to address Pharmaceutical compliance and medical events
Category: Agency & Association Created on Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:15
The Association of British Professional Conference Organisers (ABPCO) will host its next roundtable
event at One Wimpole Street, home of the Royal Society of Medicine on Tuesday 7th July (7.30am-10am).
The event will look at organising medical and scientific events that comply with pharmaceutical regulations with expert
speakers Joanna Lawlor, Global Events Director at AstraZeneca, and Mark Handforth of Compliant Venues. The
speakers will explore best practice, sponsorship DOs and DON’Ts, changes to regulations, risks and current
challenges.
“Our roundtable events have been a great success recently but this promises to be something special for those attending,”
comments Nicole Leida, joint-chair of ABPCO. “We have two expert speakers in Joanna and Mark and we hope to address
everything the attendees need to know about medical and scientific events but are perhaps too scared to ask.”
The event will take the form of an interactive forum with plenty of time for audience participation and a Q&A session. A complimentary breakfast will also be served during
registration with a chance to visit the facilities at One Wimpole Street at the end of the event.
This roundtable event will run early in the morning so those attending can then head to The Meetings Show at Olympia, London afterwards. ABPCO joint-chairs Nicole Leida
and Caroline Windsor will also be taking part in a panel session discussion regarding meeting planning as an evolving function at the Association Meetings Conference on
Monday 6th July.
