Abstract: The objective of this paper is to propose a digital online outsourcing platform, called EasyRezeki as an alternative to traditional method outsourcing projects. In the era of digitalization and online communication especially during this pandemic, EasyRezeki serves a platform for skilled workers, freelancers and contract workers to communicate and secure projects from companies. This paper offers a conceptual digital platform business model in the form of the Environment Map (EM), Business Model Canvas (BMC), the Value Proposition Design Canvas (VPC), the Strategy Canvas (SC), and a digital platform. The design thinking approach adapted in this paper is to highlight the problem faced by gig workers as well as focusing on the important job-to-do and extreme pains faced by the (a) employers and (b) service providers. The approach includes conducting literature review, benchmarking and interview; formulating initial business model options through the usage of the EM, BMC, VPC, and the SC; and testing and validation of business model prototype with customer segments. The researchers discovered that the gig economy is a growing market and there is a demand from gig workers to have a digital marketplace for gig workers to promote their services. However, it still lacks in terms of online infrastructure that can secure them stable and sustainable incomes. The EasyRezeki digital platform business model offers a conceptual solution in addressing these problems faced by the service providers, employers and workers. Keywords: Freelancer, Service Provider, Outsourcing, Entrepreneurship, Digital Platform, Business Model, Website; BMC; VPC; EasyRezeki; COVID-19; Gig Economy.

1. INTRODUCTIONAs the coronavirus outbreak has shaken 2020 worldwide, all people have no other good options rather than to go on the internet and technology. In the middle of March, Prime Minister Muhyyidin Yassin announced the Movement Control Order (MCO) to limit Malaysian movement reducing the spread of coronavirus. The border of the country was closed and prohibited to cross. Then, closure of all schools, universities, governments and shopping complexes except some premises that are involved in essential services such as water, electricity, energy, telecommunication, and etc. During this pandemic, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) in August there were at least 741,600 Malaysians that were unemployed [1]. Other than that, DOSM also reported that hotel industries are badly affected with visitors’ headcount reduction [1]. Most people work from home to

reduce and control the spread of coronavirus. Universities in Malaysia need to make online classes as remote teaching for their students because this pandemic is expected not to clear up any time soon [2]. As people have to comply with MCO and hence reduce distance travelled, most of them use online applications such as food delivery. Work from home also makes people need to use online conferencing and exploring other online applications to complete their work. Thus, people are more exposed to technologies especially boomers who do not really like to use technology. This might effectively increase the number of internet users as people need to quarantine in order to help reduce Covid-19 cases [3].

2. BACKGROUNDAs online user base applications and websites have enlarged [3], digital products can be a good marketplace to make product business. The service proposed is to provide a digital platform where users can sell and buy services from each other. Services that are offered can vary either digitally or non-digitally. Users who provide services can be between amateur to skillful workers which they can charge depending on the details and professional work. On the flip side, users who use the product to find services and contract workers can easily be found by using this platform.

3. METHODOLOGYThis paper adopts the design thinking methodology. The Design Thinking methodology is adapted for this paper which is to understand the key problems, ideation of possible solution options, validation of options by customer segments, and to suggest a conceptual solution. This includes conducting literature review and benchmarking, conducting interviews using the business modeling tools such as the nine blocks of Business Model Canvas (BMC), Value Proposition Canvas (VPC), Environment Map (EM), and Strategy Canvas.A. Environmental Map (EM)Training and skills development is understood in broad terms, covering the full sequence of life stages. Basic education gives each individual a basis for the development of their potential, laying the foundation for employability. Initial training provides the core work skills, general knowledge, and industry based and professional competencies that facilitate the transition from education into the world of work. Lifelong learning maintains individuals’ skills and competencies as work, technology and skill requirements change. Different countries focus on different elements as they see relative strengths and weaknesses in their own skills development systems, and as they learn more about innovations and experience in other countries.B. Business Model Canvas (BMC)The Business Model Canvas is being used as a tool for a strategic management and lean start up template to develop and remodel new and existing business models. It narrates nine (9) blocks of Business Model Canvas framework which are Customer Segment, Customer Relationship, Channel, Value Proposition, Key Activities, Key Resources, Key Partners, Cost Structure, and Revenue.

C. Value Proposition Design Canvas (VPC)The Value Proposition Design Canvas is being used to identify customer Gains and Pains to be able to lay out Gain Creator and Pain Reliever.D. Strategy CanvasStrategic planning and management are essential in this business to compete with the current industry and market forces. Thus, the business will apply digital trends and industrial revolution technologies, as well

Page 3: Abstract: The objective of this paper is to propose a digital ... · Web viewConceptual EasyRezeki Business Model: Creating a Digital Marketplace Platform for Workforces and Service

as the global Sustainable Development Goals in its business activities and management. In this Strategy Canvas, EasyRezeki will lay out possible strategies to outplay the other major key business players in the industry.E. Literature ReviewTo identify the gaps and loopholes in the current food delivery service, we conduct an in-depth review of existing web and mobile applications. The purpose of literature review is to summarize and synthesize existing arguments and ideas without adding new contributions to emphasize the key findings and importance of the topic. The web applications being reviewed are freelance.com, and fiverr.com. F. Interview and SurveyInterviews and surveys will be conducted to identify and spot the criteria required by consumers in using the EasyRezeki web application.G. BenchmarkingBenchmarking is a tool used in this paper to measure up the quality, time, and cost involved to develop this EasyRezeki web application. The benchmarking process includes comparing processes and performance metrics to industry levels and best practices from other companies.

4. LITERATURE REVIEWa. Market Demand for a Sustainable Gig Economy Digital PlatformSince the pandemic started and the Movement Control Order (MCO) was implemented in Malaysia, the DOSM reported that the rate of unemployment has increased from 3.5% during the first quarter of 2020 from 3.2% in the last quarter of 2019 with March recording a staggering 3.9% rate of unemployment [1]. The department also stated that people in the service sectors such as arts and entertainment are some of the most affected by the pandemic and these people are struggling to find jobs due to the shortage of employment and job demand in their industry [1]. DOSM also stated that there are 2.64 million young Malaysians that have entered the labour market from February 2012 to February 2020. In June there are currently 15.76 million labour forces in the market. According to research made by Research for Social Advancement (REFSA), in 2015 The World Bank estimates that globally, the gig economy is growing by about 33% annually [4]. In Malaysia, The Malaysia’s Employees Provident Fund (EPF) stated that the gig industry had grown by 31% in 2017 and in 2019, 26% of Malaysian workforce are made out of gig workers [4]. A professor in economics at Stanford University, Paul Oyer, stated that the market trends towards non-traditional jobs such as freelancing through the use of online digital media is currently on the rise [5]. Oyer also defined this method of working as the “gig economy”. The author also stated that the gig economy has gained more traction in recent years because of the flexibility that it has to offer and due to not having to find more common and traditional jobs that are related to their field of studies[5]. According to Roy and Shrivastava [6] Stephane Kasriel, the CEO of Upwork, one of the largest freelance platforms, 30 percent of Fortune 500 companies are now using freelancing digital platforms with top recruiters are technology companies that are using the platform. The authors also stated that digital outsourcing companies are giving people in the poor region access to buyers in richer regions. Also economically speaking, according to the Staffing Industry (2019), 1.3 billion USD was spent by companies on 53 million gig workers in 2018 only [7].

B. Initial Value Proposition Design Canvas (VPC)The customer segments can be divided into 4 main segments which are:1. Skilled workers are skilled & semi-skilled workers also known as freelancers, contract workers, or any

individuals that are interested in offering their expertise and services to employers.2. Advertisers that are interested in advertising their company, organization or business on EasyRezeki

digital platform. EasyRezeki is targeting other recruiting companies, IT-entrepreneurs and other businesses that are relevant to it’s digital platform visitors.

3. Employers composed of individuals or organizations, government bodies or companies that are interested in searching and getting services offered by our skilled workers registered with EasyRezeki on a short or long-term basis.

Figure 7: Value Proposition Canvas for Employer

Key features of EasyRezeki that can help to solve problems mentioned above:1. Skilled workers:a. Service Listing: Workers would be able to list and advertise the type of service that they are offering

to their potential customer along with their demanded price.b. Worker’s Portfolio: The workers also will be given a place where they can showcase their ability

based on their experience and previous projects that they have worked on. This is in order for them to impress their potential client so that they will be picked by the client instead of other workers who are offering the same type of service.

c. Worker’s Rating & Feedback System: Workers also can be rated by clients who worked with them on previous projects. The client can leave them a rating and feedback after the payment has been made and the work has been delivered so that other potential clients can evaluate what type of worker that they will be dealing with.

d. Accept & Reject Job: After the client has made an offer to buy the service offered by the worker, the worker will have an option to either accept or reject the project however, if the worker chose to reject the job offer they must state their reason of doing so in order to ensure a proper courtesy and manner between worker and employer. This option is to ensure that the worker maintains their own flexible work rate attitude while using the platform.

e. Payment Protection: Payment between the service provider and their employer must be completed online through EasyRezeki’s Payment Protection Plan. This plan works by the employer will make the payment after the service provider accepts the offer for the job; however, the money will be held by the Payment Protection Plan until the project has been delivered to the employer. If the employer has received the project then the money will be released to the service provider. This is to ensure that none of our customer segments are intending to use fraudulent and scam methods to make illegal money from our website thus protecting our stakeholders.

f. Online Course: Our skilled workers also can enroll as our upskiller. The task of the upskiller is to create online courses respective to their skill and service that they provided and other people can pay and enroll in these courses to improve their skill as well.

2. Employers:a. Search function: Employers would be able to search for a specific keyword such as the type of

service that they are looking for or worker’s name in order to reduce the time that they spend looking for a service related to their needs.

b. Service & Location Categorization: Service providers will be able to sort according to the type of service that they are offering. For example, if the employer searched for a runner service that is based in Gombak, only runner services running in that place would be displayed in their search result. Thus, reducing the time taken by the employer to get started with their service.

c. Direct Communication Space: Employers and service providers of their choice are given a platform where they can discuss the business matters such as the availability of the service provider, bargaining the price, deadline of the project and more. This is to ensure that there is a clear communication and written agreement made by both parties before agreeing on the business deal.

d. Custom Offers: If the employer had already decided on which service providers that they want to continue their business with, they can make a custom offer that is lower or higher than the price stated

Page 9: Abstract: The objective of this paper is to propose a digital ... · Web viewConceptual EasyRezeki Business Model: Creating a Digital Marketplace Platform for Workforces and Service

by the service provider. This flexibility is to ensure that there is still a room for bargain between service providers and their employer.

e. Employer’s Rating and Feedback System: After the payment has been made and the project is delivered, the employer will receive a feedback and rating from their service provider. This is to ensure that the service providers will be treated fairly and appropriately by their employer during the entirety of working with the employer.

3. Advertisers:a. Buy advertisement space: Advertisers that are related to the categories of the service provided can

buy the advertisement spaces available on the website.4. Upskillers: a. Enroll online courses: People who are interested in learning new knowledge and enhance their skills

on a certain line of work can enroll in the online courses offered by our skilled workers.

C. Environment Map (EM)i. Key TrendDue to the pandemic and CMCO being enforced throughout Malaysia, some sectors are being closed, workers are laid-off and unemployment rates are on the rise. The people are looking for alternatives in order to live and some of them are leaning towards the gig economy by starting a business selling products and services. This is an opportunity to ensure that EasyRezeki can cater the demand for a digital platform that can ensure these gig workers can reach employers that are suitable to their set of skills while they will be able to make money from the services that they offer.ii. Market ForcesWith the increase in numbers of gig workers entering the labor market, it is crucial for them and their service’s brand to be recognized according to the suitable employers. A huge influx of gig workers offering different types of services can be organized by using a digital platform that can support and promote their services to the right people. This digital platform also can ensure that their worker’s rights and payment are taken care of so that they will not be taken for granted by their employers.

iii. Industry ForcesCurrently in Malaysia, there is only Freelancing.my that is offering an online outsourcing platform for freelancers, contract workers, service providers and companies. There are also international outsourcing platforms like Fiverr and Upwork that can create a connection between the Malaysian gig workers market with companies from all around the world. However, Freelancing.my are not well-known for those who are outside of the freelancing community and the mentioned international outsourcing companies also are not exclusively supporting and promoting Malaysian freelancers and service providers nor do they have ever made a business relation with recruiting agencies in Malaysia.iv. Macroeconomic ForcesDuring the recent budget hearing, the Government announced that they are allocating over RM6 billion for entrepreneurs and SMEs in forms of financial aid and tax incentives. With the help from the government, there will a rise in people starting new businesses by selling products or services and with the extension of the CMCO until December 2020, it is likely that some of the new businesses will be conducted online and EasyRezeki can cater those who are new to the labor market to help them to grow their business.

From this response, it can be concluded that a good majority of the general public are buying services on a weekly and monthly basis. The type of service that is the most popular amongst the general public is the service related to delivery. The respondents also relied heavily on the use of social media in order to find services that they needed. From this survey we can conclude that there is a demand for service providers amongst the general public. However, due to the low amount of responses received, it is difficult to draw a conclusion whether there is a market demand for an online marketplace for service providers. It is recommended that further and more thorough research be conducted on this matter. It is also possible that the general public needed some awareness regarding the benefit of using an online marketplace to search for a specific service as most of the respondents are already relying heavily on social media to do that task.

9. CONCLUSION AND FUTURE WORKSIn conclusion, this paper proposed EasyRezeki as an alternative digital outsourcing platform for freelancer, contract workers and service providers to advertise their services and skills. It is also a platform for companies and organizations to look for a short term worker that would be able to work on a project for them or to outsource their work to a 3rd party. The demand for a digital outsourcing platform that can take care of the rights of the gig worker as well as for the employer to safely and securely contract a worker for their project needs to be catered and realized in order to ensure that the market for gig economy will be a stable and safe for both gig workers and industry players. Also, looking at developed countries such as America and China who have already adapted and implemented digitization of their services through the use of digital platforms, Malaysia should not be left behind in order to catch up and create a bridge between local-born Malaysian talents with companies from all over the world. In the immediate future, through observation and research, the researchers will have to come out with a Business Plan that clearly reflects on what both gig workers and companies need the most. In future, the long-term goal will be to expand the range of gig workers registering with the platform and to make collaboration with companies from all over the world in hiring EasyRezeki’s gig workers for their projects.
