Heeello Abu Dhabi !!
February is about romance all around...from the Bridal Show to Valentine’s Day.... to the official start of the wedding season in Abu Dhabi. Brides in the capital are gearing up for their big day, from event bookings to selecting entertainment, to designing invitation accoutrements and preparing the bridal trousseau. It’s all elaborate and frequently - yes - quite over the top. Perhaps we should remember that just like a wedding day, Valentine’s is but a single date--a number circled on a calendar. Both are to be celebrated, but both are fleeting.
So as you go out to buy wonderful romantic gifts for your loved ones, remember the importance of continuity, and of cherishing and nurturing the relationships around you.
Spread love, goodwill and kindness to all.

Dear Editor,
I want to share an experience that I found rather disturbing, and saw as a sign of decaying social values. My nieces go to a leading British school, and I sometimes accompany my sister when she picks up and drops off her children. Like many parents, she sometimes parks across the street and helps her young kids across the road to the school. I have seen drivers (and these are mostly parents) go by without stopping for crossing families. Indeed, one time I went to the school, I counted TWELVE cars passing by, TWELVE!!! (All nationalities, I might add), until a taxidriver (a TAXI DRIVER!!) stopped to let my sister and her kids pass. Imagine that! Dear parents:--of all nationalities, and all schools, and all neighborhoods: even if you don't care about pedestrian crossing etiquette, please stop for crossing children!

Dear Ed,
I find your magazine very helpful and I just can’t wait to get it every month. One of the things that I find most useful is your restaurant guide. However, I have noticed that it doesn’t mention all the restaurants in the city. I know it can’t feature each one but there are some good ones it doesn’t mention like Abu Shakra, Hemingway’s etc. They are really worth a mention guys!
Maria D.
Dear Editor,
I have seen your Youtube channel. It’s nice! That one bite on Roger Fed was awesome! I think the ‘New Year’s resolutions’ video was something different too but really short ;)

Informed!BE H1N1 Update!
Dear Ed,
I would like to bring an issue to the traffic authority that needs to be addressed. I take my kids to the Corniche a lot and we walk across the street through the 'main' intersection--the one nearest to Ali and Sons which takes you to the big area of coffee shops and restaurants. We have noticed on busy weekends that when you cross the Corniche road (not where it joins Al Khaleej)--the waiting times for pedestrians on both sides of the road don't work together. Basically what happens is that the green light takes you to the middle island, and then you have to wait at a red light to cross to the Corniche on green. The problem is that often there are a lot of people--many kids, strollers, old people etc, jammed together in a narrow strip in the middle island. I hope the authorities do something about this to make it safer to cross.

Abu Dhabi Classics strikes the right chord yet again as Vienna Philharmonic is invited to perform in the capital under Lorin Maazel this month. A conductor, violinist and composer, Lorin has carved a niche for himself among the musical greats of our time. This event will treat audiences to three melodious symphonies which preserve some of the most accurate musical depictions of mother nature’s divine gifts to our world. Theorchestra will perform Beethoven’s immortalsymphonic depiction of a visit to the countryside, Debussy’s dazzlingly vivid portrait of the sea, and Ravel’s moving ballet based on a Greek myth. This is your chance to re-live the magic of Victorian opera house music and witness the performance of alegendary orchestra first-hand.

CoffeeCaféNo high-sounding, difficult-to-pronounce, impossible-to-spell,
mind-bogglingly-exotic name was chosen for Carrefour’s café
in Delma Mall (Musaffah). Simply called, “Coffee Café”, this coffee
shop is modest and cosy in its style and appearance. The food however, comes as
a tasty surprise from what one expects. They have croissants, pastries, chicken
and zaatar wraps, bagels, sandwiches and pizzas too! Refreshing
beverages are available as well. From the usual coffee, espresso,
latte to the healthier, seasonal fruit juice, take a break from all
that shopping and try out their eclectic menu; something is

precise) and you will be hooked for life.
Feeding Finz-y!
No tips for guessing what Finz restaurant specializes in but not many
know that Finz is the first of its kind in terms of its unique all-wooden
architecture and design which extends from the marine jetty right into
the Arabian Gulf! Surprisingly enough they are well equipped to serve
anything from a simple to Wok to a mouth-watering Tandoori.
Although strictly an ala carte restaurant; Finz does offer a special
menu if you plan to visit with large party of people. No need to stay
away if you are a vegan, this stylish restaurant caters to your unique
needs too! The atmosphere is alluring and relaxing to say the least.
Two private dining rooms are available for intimate dinners
(Valentine’s Day hint!) and if that’s not enough you can dine in an al
fresco terrace with a sea view that takes your breath away. A meal
for two can cost approximately Dh 600 which
is worth it when you are trying to win a
special someone’s heart or celebrating a
meaningful occasion!

What’s that funny smell? What’s that funny smell?ABU DHABIABU DHABIABU DHABIABU DHABIABU DHABIABU DHABIMy
As a long term resident of Abu Dhabi, I’ve lived in a few buildings and found that there is a problem with bad indoor smells. Some of my friends and coworkers have also said the same thing about their apartments.Perhaps it is a problem that only exists in older buildings, but what I usually do is to cover the smell with air fresheners (my Arab neighbor says she uses ‘bakhoor’ ). I have called professional help a few times, and I’ve been told that the problem is caused by poorplumbing in buildings. They’ve explained to me that these unpleasant smells are caused by backflow and locked-in moisture, which leads to moulds and mildew. And I’ve found out that moulds and mildew can affect respiration, especially among sensitive or asthmatic people, and might even trigger allergy symptoms even in people who don’t have allergies.
The good news (my fiancé is a practicing engineer and has told me this) is that the introduction of newbuilding codes for Abu Dhabi will also cover the issue of plumbing in all new construction—not just structural, health and safety aspects, but also plumbing. Efficient plumbing is an important issue for all of us as it will not only ensure that water--and sewage I suppose-- is properly routed in (for water) and out (water andsewage) of your apartment, but that there will be no
more unpleasant smells. This is wonderful news. It’s such a shame that it is not possible to retrofit old buildings with new plumbing, because many old buildings have such great character, but I am looking forward to new buildings with good plumbing, and nicer smells :)

Five Reasons You Should Definitely Go See theWhite Lions in Al Ain Zoo:
1. The 18-month-old lions were a gift to the Al Ain Zoo from the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve in South Africa. They were flown in by passenger plane from South Africa, and the park has named them “conservation ambassadors.”
2. Despite being recorded (or so it is rumoured) from as early as 1927 in the Kruger National Park, South Africa, the world became aware of white lions in the 70's when two were photographed in the South African game reserve of Timbavati.
3. The lion is believed to be extinct with only a few white lions in captivity. There are believed to have been 450,000 lions in the wild 50 years ago, but the number has gone down to a paltry 20,000.
4. White lions are the offspring of two lions who both carry the "autosomal recessive gene". Interestingly it doesn't mean all their cubs will be white. A white female can't produce white cubs unless the male she mates with a lion that also carries the recessive gene (and vice versa).
5. Due to their rarity, white lions were removed from their natural habitat and sent to captive breeding/hunting programmes as well as zoos and circuses (most famously the Siegfried and Roy's magic act in Las Vegas). In captivity, white lions can be found in various zoos in South Africa and the USA, also at wildlife centres in South Africa where research and breeding are conducted. Now Al Ain Zoo is supporting their preservation, and they’re right here
for all of us to see.

“I came to Abu Dhabi in 1987 and even though it wasn’t easy I built a life here with my kids. I have a son and daughter, both of whom were born in Abu Dhabi so this place is home to them. Me too but... oh I don’t know, I do thank God for where I am now but at some point I would like to go back to Philippines, back to my roots.
“In the last 10 years this city has changed so much. The buildings definitely look modern but it doesn’t feel the same anymore. I remember when buildings were designed with balconies and you’d see people sitting in them, enjoying a cool breeze and someone would be hanging clothes or just observing people passing by. I think people lived a more relaxed life earlier. Of course I still love the fact that Abu Dhabi is so safe.
“I was looking to contribute to a worthy cause and two years ago, I found it. I joined Piebl which is basically a humanitarianorganization which promotes charitable causes by organizing basketball tournaments in Al Jazira Club every Friday. The tickets cost Dh 5 but for me, it’s not just about charity, it’s about having a good time with family.
“I have made many unforgettable memories here. In Ramadan we helped out some less privileged families by buying themgroceries, and then there was the trip to Tawaam Cancer Hospital to deliver goodies to kids. It is a tiring task as I already have a day job but when I see a smile on someone’s face or I hear heartfelt words like “Thank you”, it makes all our efforts worth it!”

Educating children is the key to a happier future which is why children in Africa need your help, and they need it NOW!Another initiative from Volunteer in Abu Dhabi, this time around they are collecting laptops. Some bright young minds are keen to finish their education but as we all know (through experience; good or bad I will not say) that finishing homework assignments is imperitive to the learning experience. So if you have one lying around and it is virus free, equiped with a modem and wordprocessor then contact Ryan Rowe via the 'Volunteer in Abu Dhabi' facebook group.

Each of us can in his, or her, own way make a difference in our world. Sometimes this can be a simple gesture, and sometimes it is a kind word. This page is dedicated to the hero that resides in each and every one of us, and to the sharing of great news that will make our planet a better place for us all.
A children’s library is all set to open in Abu Dhabi Mall with the joint efforts of Kitab and ADACH. As the 20th Abu DhabiInternational Book Fair (ADIBF) draws near (scheduled between 2- 7 March), the organizers have unveiled plans to attract kids towards reading books and expose them to a wide range of reading choices. In addition to the mall library, five mobile libraries will also be launched within the emirate this year.
“This new initiative will bring children’s books closer to every child and parent across theemirate, while creating opportunities for publishers to meet the increasing demand for quality children’s books and literature in Abu Dhabi and across the region,” says HisExcellency Jumaa Al Qubaisi, Director of theNational Library and the Abu DhabiInternational Book Fair.
So, for those of you with a passion for books, Abu Dhabi Mall in March is the right placeto be!

This campaign was launched in Abu Dhabi to raise environmental awareness and
educate residents about energyconservation. The campaign’s main goal was to
educate children and younsters on how to use the planet’s limited resources prudently. We were piqued, so we decided to check out their website and interestingly enough, it does grab the attention of school going kids as it informs them on the effects of over-consumption and the solution to the problem by altering everyday habits. It carries latestenviro-news and eco-facts about UAE. There were somehandy device installations for adults as well. Just ask your kids to log on the website, choose from Energy Hero, Water Hero or School Hero and they will be well on their way towards eco-awareness. Be warned though, you might have to get your act together otherwise the ‘Heroes of UAE’ will banish you from their kingdom!

Step 1: Roll your paint roller evenly in the paint dish with
decent coverage. Make sure you drain off excess paint
from the roller into the grid in the paint tray before you
place it on the wall.
Step 2: Visualize a 3x3 inch box on the wall you are about
to paint. Remember to adjust the size of the imaginary
box according to the size of your roller. This is the area
inside which you will move the roller. Place the roller
sideways in the top left corner of your imaginary box. You
will be painting the area side to side.
Step 3: Go from the left side to the right side of the box,
making a zigzag motion while rolling the paint in your
imaginary box on the wall. Begin overlapping strokes,
about 1/2 inch to 1 inch. Continue till the end of the box.
Once at the bottom, continue to zigzag back to the top.
Step 4: Next, place the roller in the top right corner of the
box vertically. Paint the wall with the same zigzag motion
you used in the previous step. Only this time you will be
painting from top to bottom, overlapping your previous
stroke as you shift towards the side. Once
you get to the end of your box, go
back in the opposite direction.
Step 5: Move to the next
area (beside the one you just
painted) and repeat each of
the above steps for the next
imaginary box.
South Africa: Women pin the name of their crush on their sleeves for all the world to see. Funnily enough, sometimes men discover that they are desired by an admirer on February 14th itself as they read their name on a lady's sleeve. This custom is called Lupercalia and is actually an ancient Roman tradition which is still practiced in South Africa.
Mexico: Men and women exchange redflowers, red balloons, basically anything red and heart-shaped. This gift-giving is anexpression of love and prosperity.
Brazil: Since they don't celebrate Valentine's Day on February 14th, Brazilians wait for June 12th to celebrate Dia dos Namorados ("the day of lovers"). All single women jot down the names of their crushes on a piece of paper the night before and on the big day they open it up to determine who they should marry.Couples on the other hand are free to exchange gifts like flowers and chocolates openly.
Japan: Efficient and precise as always, the Japanese have devised a colour coordinated method to express love. Women give dark chocolates to their partners on February 14th. Men return the favor a month later on 'White Day' (March 14th) by handing out whitechocolates and jewelry to the women they love and admire.
Vietnam: Couples wear clothes of the same colour to profess their fondness of each other. Go ahead, try it this year. It sounds fun! Do click pictures and share your experience with us.
Spain: Only people in love exchange presents. Friends or family members do not exchange gifts at all. If you think being single in Abu Dhabi is bad, think again!

The workplace is such a hectic environment these days that we hardly give any thought to what we consume before and during office hours. Most us work on default mode and try grabbing what’s convenient, cheap, and tasty. And when we do think twice about food, it’s usually in the context of weight loss rather than improving our cognitive functioning and energy levels. Here are a few easy rules to follow in order to improve eating habits at work:
Strike A Balance The five basic food groups that must be covered by any meal are: proteins, carbohydrates, fats, fiber and vitamins. Research suggests that meals with more protein and fats are associated with better-sustained attention, focus, and concentration. While meals that have higher carbohydrate content seem to have positive effects over short term memory.
Don’t Neglect Carbs Good carbs such as fruit, vegetables, and brown rice help maintain the brain’s supply of fuel which it needs to function effectively. So if you wish to remain attentive and sharp, eat a healthy amount of carbs in your meals. Don’t over-eat though, because too much carbs can make you feel lethargic and drowsy. Needless to say, the last thing you want to do at work is doze off!
Pack in the Protein Proteins such as meat, fish, dairy products, eggs, and nuts slow the absorption of glucose so your brain gets a long and steady flow of fuel. This helps you to sustain energy and enhances your mood and memory. Meats, poultry, fish, and eggs contain amino-acids which help produce the neurotransmitters that keep us alert, energetic, and zesty.
The Good FatOmega-3 fatty acids are good for your heart and they’re great brain food, too. The fats found in salmon, walnuts, and kiwi improve learning and memory and help fight against mental disorders like depression, schizophrenia, and dementia. So if you wish to retain a part of your sanity for retirement days, Omega 3 is the way to go!
Eat Smaller Amounts but More FrequentlyTo maintain energy and performance levels, the last thing you need is a three-course lunch. If you’re working late, big dinners are also a definite no-no. Too much food - even if it’s well balanced - is going to make you drowsy because it introduces excess amounts of glucose in the body at once. Remember: five to six small meals a day is better than three square meals.
The Rule of HandYour hand is a highly sophisticated tool for measuring appropriate food amounts for your body type. The fist is the size of the carbs fit for intake during one meal; the palm is the size of the protein. When you make an OK sign with the thumb and index finger, that’s how much fat you should consume. Then open your hand wide, and that’s the amount of fruits and vegetables you should be eating. It is so simple and quite literally, handy!
Pay attention to your body rhythm. Capitalize on your most productive peaks. If you are a morning person, tend to your most challenging tasks in the morning, or if you’re an afternoon person, use your morning time for more mundane, less mental-intensive work.
Time Management Tip # 5*
OFFICE BITES
Step 1: This step quite literally requires you to step on a weighing scale and make note of your weight in kilograms.
Step 2: Stand ram-rod straight against a wall and have a friend measure your height. If required, bribe the friend with chocolates to not reveal it in public.
Step 3: Once you have these two measurements, substitute the values in the following formula:
BMI = (weight in kilograms) divided by (height in meters x height in meters)
Interpreting The Results
Safe Zone: In between 18.5 to 24.9 is normal.
If your BMI is 18.4 or lower, it means you’re underweight and need to eat more. On the other hand, if your BMI is higher than 25, it means you’re overweight. If it’s even higher than 30, it means you’re obese and therefore, need to take measures to be fit again.
Calculating your BMI can help you gauge your fitness. Keep in mind, though, that BMI is only a guide and not theultimate basis for physical health. What really matters is what you do with the results and whether you begin developing healthy eating habits along with regularexercise to improve your physical well-being.
Find out your Body Mass Index Today!
16
BMI stands for Body Mass Index or simply put, it is an index which informs you if your weight is proportionate to your height. By knowing your BMI you’ll have a better idea of where you stand in terms of your physical fitness, and you’ll be able to set more realistic goals. Discovered in the 1980s, BMI has since been a basis for judging appropriate fitness levels by trainers.
However, recent studies do suggest the Body FatPercentage calculations are more accurate as they account for muscular weight as well. This makes them more precise for determining fitness levels for athletes and bodybuilders who carry more muscle than fat. Regardless, the first step towards improving your body shape is to access which rung of the exercise ladder you are on by calculating your BMI.
KICKING
There's nothing like the New Year or even the start of a new month tomotivate us into adopting better health habits. What's bad for your brain is bad for your overall health and with the amount of newknowledge increasing exponentially, who needs this avoidable liability? Here are some brain toxic habitsto avoid:
No Breakfast
People who do not take breakfast are going to have a lower blood sugar level. Avoid white sugar, juices, croissant and white bread. Choose instead eggs, smoked salmon, low fat yougurt or cheese, and high fibre cereals, along with a cup of coffee or tea.
Brain Laziness
Lack of exercise and muscle mass affects circulation to the brain and promotes residual toxic waste in the brain. Decrease TV watching and computer games in favor of reading interesting books and being around intellectually stimulating people.
High Consumption ofNeurotoxins:
Almost all edible products contain preservative like the flavour-enhancer, monosodiumglutamate (MSG) and the highly potent sweetening agent, Aspartame. These substances can lead to dyslexia, brain tumors, depression, chronic pain and paranoia. Avoid alcohol and cigarette abuse. They also affect your
liver which is the waste management factory responsible to protect your body and your brain fromunavoidable toxins.
Polluting Your Brain
Keep the AC in your car on " air circulation" mode to avoid inhaling exhaust fumes. Avoid dental fillers with mercury. Avoid large fish from polluted waters. Avoid food with pesticides, leaded fuel, paints, inks, or dyes.
Sleep Deprivation
Sleep allows our brain to rest and the brain battery to recharge. Long term deprivation from sleep will accelerate the death of brain cells.

Young, inspired and vibrant - you don't want to miss DJ Natalie! After playing in the biggest and best venues of Manchester and Ibiza, she comes to the capital with a great selection of house music.
Her music is influenced heavily by her father and his favourite bands, such as Massive Attack, Bowie and Kate Bush. She says, “Without him, I would never have loved Music as much as I do.”
She was drawn to the edges of the music scene, trying her hand as a DJ from a very early age. Her work includes mainly funky house and vocal electro and she is moving towards some techno-house. When asked about being one of the few female DJs in the capital, she told Tempo:
"I think it is much more difficult for females to prove themselves in such a male orientated scene. I’ve been pretty lucky up to now."
Rumour has it that the platinum list of DJ MAG Middle East has her as the only female in their top 10 this February! As resident DJ to one of Abu Dhabi's newest fashionable hotspots: Chameleon at the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, we are lucky she brings her talent to the nightlife here.
Head-turning looks coupled with effortless style and people skills par excellence, Natalie Brogan is bound to leave an impression.

A Woeful Situation and Heavy Blood
Arabic can be fun and funny whentranslated literally into other languages. A Western friend asked me to explain the phrase “haltak hallah” (something told to him by an Arab man). I answered that “hallah” (that’s with a strong ‘h’) translates to “situation”. So the phrase translates to “Your situation is a situation.” (Huh???) Well, it is more of an assertion, a reiteration. “Your situation IS definitely a situation”. Not easy to explain but makes total sense if you’re an Arab. My friend also asked me about a colleague at work who, whenever exasperated, would cry out loud: “roh ballat al bahr.” The literal meaning of this is ‘go pave the sea’ i.e. go do the impossible. If said casually this could be close to “go catch a fish” but if uttered in anger, could be more like: “get the hell out of here.”
Dileep from Sharjah sent us an email asking “My boss always tells me ‘damak thakeel’ – should I be upset?” Literally, Dileep, it means “your blood is heavy” and normally this phrase describes someone who is dull, slow or just unpleasant. But how he says conveys real meaning. If said casually, it could just be a humorous jab. Indeed, in some Arabic cultures “damak thakeel” is sometimes said to a baby as a teasing endearment, kind of like “you little rascal, you.”
If you are a language enthusiast check out www.yamli.com. It is an interestingwebsite, still in beta phase, that was developed by Habib Hadad, a Lebanese entrepreneur who cofounded INLET International Network of Lebanese Entrepreneurs and Technologists). Yamli.com offers a smart Arabic keyboard that allows you to spell out an Arabic word the way you would pronounce it. Yamli converts whatever you write using English letters to the corresponding Arabic word, in real-time. Hard to explain, but definitely something there. Check it out.

My beef this month is about air conditioning. Heellllo! It’s 'winter' in the UAE, and ACs in some buildings are still in full blast!! We all know that air conditioning is as essential in this part of the world as the air we breathe, and virtually everyone has an opinion about air conditioning--whether you see it as a necessary evil or anindispensable good. But make no mistake: right nowtemperatures are so cool that your AC should be on officialsabbatical. The problem is that we are all severely programmed to turn on the air conditioning--a knee jerk reaction to be sure-- even when the weather is cool! Case in point: all those shopping malls, office buildings and restaurants that are still blasting frigid air, only because no one took the time to inform maintenance to turn down the thermostat a couple of notches.
I am convinced that the biggest contributor to our carbonfootprint is the wanton use/ abuse of air conditioning. How can we change our behaviour, you ask? Well, I say it begins withtaking the time to regulate and adjust your thermostat, daily. Think about your behavior at home. Are you donning thickclothing indoors when you could take off a layer or two and notch down the AC or turn it off altogether? How about unused rooms of your house; are you using the AC unnecessarily when all you need (at this time of the year) is a bit of natural aeration, such as a window cracked open, to circulate air and stave off mold? Folks, the bottom line, like it or not, is that it is winter in the UAE, and these temperatures, thankfully, are going to be with us for a while. So embrace the natural cool and leave your trusted AC for a blistering day!

Getting a taxi is next to impossible these days! I don’t mind waiting, at least not in the winter months, but what really gets on my nerves is when people who have just arrived at the bus stop hail a cab which has stopped for me. I have had my fair share of squabbles with complete strangers because of such behavior. However things really get out of hand when a female is involved. Men can’t argue with them nor make them see reason. Courtesy dictates for men to act like gentlemen but it sounds like asking for too much. Especially when we are late for meetings or interview appointments! Recently, I took a stand on the matter and refused to give up my
cab to a lady younger than myself. She made such a scene! I was forced to step back
because of which I missed an important meeting with
international clients.

What would you do if something like this happened to you? Would you give up your taxi or argue for it and how do you think thisproblem can be resolved?
“I believe that authorities should introduce the queuing system for all taxi stops. This way no one would fight over who got there first and who deserves the ride.” Robin
“This has happened to me but as a female I can definitely vouch for the fact that men are not always this courteous! I have been bumped out of a taxi or two after some man refused to budge from the front seat. I have no choice but to call cabs to ensure that I get one.” Magen T.
“My suggestion to the guys is that they should stop being such pushovers and maybe if there were queues such a problem wouldn’t be there in the first place.” Mohammed Baqar
“This happens to me everyday! It’s a common problem in Abu Dhabi. I think theauthorities are increasing the number of taxis as almost everyone I know has beencomplaining about this for quite sometime. Frankly speaking, my advice is: Takethe bus!” Hammad Badar

Traditional dhows are indeed a widely recognized symbol of Arabian culture. The word - 'dhow'conjures up a clear image of proud Arabianancestry and heritage. A powerful link to the past, dhows were primary means of sea travel and trade for pearl divers, fishermen, and merchants. Allseafaring adventurers, not meant for dry land.
Traditional ship builders still rely on dhows for transportation of goods and services as Karim, a fish merchant, explains, "The basic design of the Arabian wooden dhows is more sound than that of these fancy new boats. I just commissioned another wooden dhow today! The only change I made is I had them add a navigation system to the new one."
Classification of DhowsShu'ai is the most commonly used work-boat for fishing and trading on inshore waters. With lengths of ranging from five metres to an impressive 15 metres or more, Shu'ai of all shapes and sizes can
be seen in ports and harbours around the Emirates. It has a distinctive concave profile, high at the stern and low towards the bow with a jutting prow.
A less familiar shape for city dwellers is that of the Boum. Usually sailing in lower Gulf than inNorthern waters its tapered stern it issymmetrical has an imposingly tall prow often used by divers as a diving board! They have a higher tonnage than Shu'ai (400 tons at times) and are longer too - often more than 35 metres.
A less curvy form of dhow is Jailbut which has a rectangular profile so it can carry a larger sail. Aptly designed for racing, these boats slice through the winds with graceful ease.
A true testament to the durability of these dhows is that you can still spot a few on display along the Corniche shores, while others have been converted to floating restaurants which entertain tourists and residents alike.
Traditional dhows are indeed a widely recognized be seen in ports and harbours around the Emirates.

Timeout: Allowing time for your temper to diffuse is the best solution to keep you from setting out on a killing spree in broad daylight! As the experts say, count to 10 and let it go! Practise relaxation techniques likemeditation and yoga. In the long run, they really help!
My Space: Get some space between yourself and the other person so you have room to vent out yourfrustrations. If you still can't contain your anger, count longer, go to 20.
Express Anger: Yes, you've read it correctly. No, it does not mean we are green-lighting your attempts to harm the other person in any way. It just means that you should try and sort out the issue by conversing with the other party in a calm manner. Explain to them whattriggered your response and how to avoid suchsituations in the future.
Think Healthy: Turn the negative into a positive. Stepoutside for a brisk walk, run, swim, play ball or grab a quick cold drink. Exercising might provide an outlet for the emotional upset. It might assist you in clearing your head.
Identify the Problem: Try keeping all your focus on thereason of the conflict in opinion. Otherwise it will just lead to more bickering and name-calling. Discuss.Discuss. Discuss
'I' Statements: Don't play the blame-game. It doesn't really help resolve anything. Use 'I' statements like, "I am upset because you promised to help me with this presentation" instead of, "You should have helped me with this presentation!"
Let Go: It is considered bad form to hold a grudge when all has been said and done. Forgiveness helps you more than it helps the other person. Its tells you that you are mature enough to handle your emotions and are in complete control of your temper.
Humor Helps: Beware! There is a fine line betweenhumor and sarcasm. While humor can diffuse apotentially explosive situation, sarcasm can set it off like a time-bomb. So choose your words wisely.
Most of us know (from experience, I might add) that controlling one's temper is no walk in the park. It is a daunting task, especially when the other person has rubbed you the wrong way, pushed all your buttons and set the nerves in your temples throbbing out of control! My suggestion is to just breathe...relax and read these tips to get your mind off the negative thoughts and back in 'happy-land':

Well, it’s February again and that means the day that every man dreads is near, the 14th...... Valentine’s Day! The Super Bowl of Sweetness, the World Cup of Cuteness and the Formula One of Fondness all rolled into to one. It’s time to impress or winter will last a lot longer than the calendar says it should, if you catch my drift!
As a single in Abu Dhabi, I am thankfully spared much of the Public Displays of Affections (PDA’s) that would be visible in much of the rest of the world on this day. Just because I would rather be doing it doesn’t mean I want to see you do it. The more physical fondlings are officially discouraged so you had better get a room......and be married!
Just saying! I didn’t make the rules!
So I am off the hook this year as I do not currently have aSignificant Other to shower with flowers, candy, jewel-lery and lacy things. I was once married so I know how it works but now that I am single I kind of miss the challenge. Despite the self-inflicted pressure, it always turned out fun even though it is somewhat uncomfortable for a guy to go out shopping for these items (especially the “unmentionables”) without getting funny looks! You ladies need to understand that. We try!
Maybe next year!

Dear Um Saif,
I live in Al Muhairy Centre and several times while I was in the mall I have seen naughty children (and I think it is the same group of kids) balancing on the escalator railings and sliding down, hangingprecariously as the escalator travels fast and from high distances. I am sure this is not the fault of the shopping mall, but there must be something that can be done to keep these naughty children under control and safe. Um Saif, I don't want to be a nosy tenant, and I certainly don't want to harass my neighbours, but it is difficult to stay quiet. Should I raise it with the children's parents and the mallmanagement, or am I overstepping my bounds?
A.S. (Concerned Resident)--as told to Tempo
Dear A.S.,
This is a classic situation we all face from time to time; and there's no doubt that it is always easiest to walk away. My first instinct would be toadmonish the children directly, but I don't think that it’s a good idea as badly behaved kids can be rude back. The hardest thing to do may be to try to talk to the parents (if you know who they are) and to remind them that tragic accidents can happen in seconds. If that's not an option you can raise it with mall security or management suggesting that they perhaps send a formal letter to the parents of these children. But even if you don't do anything, I think writing to Tempo shows you do care. So I would like to relay your message to the parents of these naughty kids, and to parents everywhere, saying: good parenting means takingresponsibility for your children, and that begins with teaching them good manners and discipline!
