Taxis are reasonably priced in Abu Dhabi and you’ll
have no problem flagging one down from the
roadside. Though you’ll see lots of white and gold
coloured cars, we suggest you flag one of the silver
taxis, which are also recognisable by their yellow
roof signs. While all taxi drivers will be familiar with
the main hotels, sightseeing areas and shopping
centres, places that are a little off the beaten track
can be a challenge due to the lack of street names
in the city. Try to get your concierge to write out
detailed directions for you that include a well-known
landmark. Fares from the airport into the centre of
town cost approximately $60. If you want to drive,
there’s an abundance of car rental firms at the
airport offering a range of vehicles for every budget.
Like Manhatten, Abu Dhabi’s roads are based on a
grid system, so it’s relatively easy to get around. That
said, try to avoid the roads during peak traffic times
- from 7-9am and 6-7pm – and remain calm if you
discover other drivers flouting the rules of the road.
Money
The UAE dirham is the official currency of the UAE.
Banknotes are available in 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200,
500 and 1,000 notes and there are ATMs dotted all
over the city should you need to withdraw money.
For ease of reference there is 1 Saudi Riyals to 1 UAE
dirham, 1 Qatar Riyal to 1 UAE dirham, and 10 Bahrain
Dinars to 1 UAE dirham.
What you need to know to get to and around the UAE capital.

The Hotels
Abu Dhabi is home to the world’s most expensive
hotel, the resplendent Emirates Palace (www.
emiratespalace.com). With its stately driveways
and private VIP entrance, this magnificent building
– which cost an estimated US$3 billion to build –
looks like a royal residence and houses an array of
amenities guaranteed to make you feel like a king
(or queen). We’re talking an award-winning spa, a
huge expanse of private beach and a glut of great
restaurants. And though Its size means it’s easy
to get lost amid the gold, marble ad crystal inside
– trust us, it happens – the rooms themselves are
somewhat cosy. Each comes with a private balcony,
personal butler service and the ringing endorsement
of Bill Clinton, Robert de Niro and Will Smith, all of
whom have enjoyed a stay here.
Between the bridges in the area of Qaryat Al
Beri, the Shangri-La Hotel Qaryat Al Beri (www.
shangri-la.com/en/property/abudhabi/shangrila)
blends traditional Arabic style in a Moorish styled
palace. Here guests can enjoy abra rides through the
waterways of the hotel’s souk, which houses a range
of boutiques and restaurants. You’re also well placed
to take in many of the city’s sights, such as the Grand
Mosque and the Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation.
Then again, you may just want to stay put – one
of the loveliest stretches of beaches can be found
here, as well as the hotel’s world-famous Chi Spa.
While the Speciality Suites, with their cooling marble
bathrooms and separate walk-in monsoon showers,
make for outstanding accommodation.
Foodies will do well to check into the Fairmont Bab
Al Bahr (www.fairmont.com/babalbahr) a more
recent addition to the Qaryat Al Beri district where
celebrated Michelin starred chef Marco Pierre White
has no less than two fantastic outlets. This stylish
building appears to have been inspired by cubism
and is even more impressive at night when the front
of it becomes the canvas for a slick, illuminated
monochrome artwork. The theme of modernity
continues inside: all the bedrooms are light and
bright with classy cappuccino and cream-coloured
fittings. Marble, walnut wood panelling and bamboo
flower-inspired soft furnishings work together to
create rich textures, while many guests are afforded
an alluring creek side view from their outsized
bathtubs.
The Yas Hotel (www.theyashotel.com) has – with
good reason – been stacking up plenty of column
inches since it opened in 2009. Set half on land and
half on water astride Yas Marina Circuit and boasting
views over Yas Marina, it’s a truly unique hotel – not
least because it’s housed in a futuristic shell that
radiates a fluorescent purple light after the sun sets.
From ultra-luxurious hideaway resorts to family-focused city centre abodes and the world’s most expensive hotel, Abu Dhabi serves up a tantalising pick of properties for the leisure traveller to choose from.
Abu Dhabi 101 hotels.indd 5 2/24/2011 2:40:11 PM
6 Abu Dhabi 101
The contemporary theme extends to the open plan
bedrooms, with their all-glass bathrooms. And we’re
big fans of the marina tower rooftop pool for its sun
loungers that resemble giant golf balls.
We also love the lobby of the Crowne Plaza Abu
Dhabi Yas Island (www.ichotelsgroup.com) with its
lavish gold and maroon circular sofas which resemble
Cinderella’s carriage – minus the white horses. We’re
fond of the rooms, too, with their elegant taupe and
pastel-coloured furnishings and views over the golf
course and mangroves. And while we’re at It, we
also think its ever-busy restaurant Barouk is the best
Lebanese eatery in town, so what’s not to like about
this place?
Rooms with expansive balconies overlooking the
ocean and the lush fairways of the adjacent links
course await visitors to the Radisson Blu Hotel, Abu
Dhabi Yas Island (www.radissonblu.com). It’s a hotel
that’s perfect for families: the kids can let loose in
their dedicated pool and play area, mum can head
off to the spa and dad can play the aforementioned
golf course. And let’s not forget the excellent access
to Ferrari World.
Still on Yas Island, Rotana Yas Island (ww.rotana.
com) is a four-star deluxe hotel with decent sized
rooms and first-rate facilities. The restaurants are
particularly good – we’re admirers of both Blue Grill
and Indian restaurant Rangoli – while there’s both an
adult and children’s pool and tennis courts if you’re
in the mood for a few sets.
For long term stays on Yas Island, Staybridge
Suites (www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/sb/1/en/home)
offers spacious suites with fully-equipped kitchens
and self-service laundry making it your ideal home
away from home, and there’s even a convenience
store on hand. Recreational facilities include a 24-
hour fitness centre, a swimming pool, and a convivial
BBQ Pavilion.

Despite myriad hotels opening up in the capital in
recent years, Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi (www.rotana.
com) has easily maintained its status as one of the
city’s finest. Ideal for guests intent on cramming in
both sunning and shopping, you’ll find a superb pool
among manicured gardens and a private connection
to Abu Dhabi Mall. The hotel’s also notable for its
superb selections of restaurants – Rodeo Grill is a
carnivore’s dream – which means it’s popular with
couples in need of some quality time together.
But with its supervised crèche and temperature-
controlled kids’ pool, it’s also wonderful for families.
Another hotel in the heart of the city, Le Royal
Méridien Abu Dhabi (www.starwoodhotels.com/
lemeridien) offers a tranquil oasis with its palm tree-
lined pool seemingly miles – although mere minutes
– away from the hustle and bustle of the city. We’re
particularly fond of the commanding Royal Tower,
where the plush modern rooms are accented with
warm, earthy tones. The ultimate indulgence is the
stand-alone claw-foot bathtub in the gleaming glass
and marble bathroom.
Offering a beautiful stretch of beach and recently
refurbished rooms that pack in a wealth of luxuries,
the InterContinental Abu Dhabi (www.ichotelsgroup.
com) is a true gem of a hotel. It’s a place that comes
alive at night, with its Yacht Club one of the hottest
spots in town – be sure to get here early to bag a
table on its jam-packed terrace – and its lounges and
restaurants offering something for everyone. Families
will love Chamas Churrascari, a Brazilian-style eatery
that’s unlike anything else in town.
If you’re looking for somewhere just outside of
downtown but close to the airport, Al Raha Beach
Hotel (www.preferredhotels.com) is a great choice.
Here you can soak up the sun on soft sand or aside
a fantastic infinity pool – there’s a separate one for
kids – and take your pick from six restaurants and an
arm’s-length of treatments at the in-house spa. Add
to that some great sports facilities and you have an

all-encompassing resort you’ll never need to leave.
You’ll be treated to plenty of aqua-based activities
at the popular Hilton Abu Dhabi (www1.hilton.com)
where you can sail, snorkel, windsurf and fish. There
are also squash and tennis courts, a walking track
and an advanced fitness centre If you’re determined
to keep trim while away. Not that It’s an easy thing
to do in a hotel that encompasses the superb Italian
restaurant Bice.
But if it’s rest you’re after, book a room at
the Sheraton Abu Dhabi Hotel & Resort (www.
starwoodhotels.com). The recently renovated guest
rooms here all contain the trademarked Sheraton
Sweet Sleeper (a genuinely great bed), while a
private beach and fantastic pool demand relaxation.
If you want to stay in real style, splash out on the
Presidential Suite, a truly brilliant room that’s up
there with the best in the city. While here, build up
an appetite for the hearty Italian fare served up at La
Mamma by taking a pre-dinner stroll along the city’s
wonderful corniche, on which the hotel stands.
Also in the vicinity of the corniche is the alcohol-
free Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan by Rotana Abu
Dhabi (www.rotana.com/rayhaanhotelandresorts).
The hotel exterior resembles a huge Venetian blind,
drawing parallels to the creations of expressionist
post-modern architect Frank Gehry, while the striking
lobby, adorned with Moroccan lanterns, spirals
upwards ostensibly into infinity. A great place for
families, aside from the powdery beach you’ll find a
kids’ club and pool, babysitting services and, best of
all, child-friendly menus in the restaurants.
Horticulturists will rejoice when they witness the
inner garden at the Armed Forces Officers Club
& Hotel (www.afoc.mil.ae). It’s one of the world’s
largest – and award-winning to boot – with 142
species of plants. But it’s not just the greenery
that sets this hotel apart from its contemporaries;
the architecture is more akin to a space centre
than a 600-roomed hotel. The rooms themselves,
however, are old-school oppulent, richly fitted with
dark wood and leather furnishings. And the stately
theme continues to some of its nine restaurants and
lounges, including the West Wing Lounge.

Abu Dhabi’s grandest hotel – at least in terms of
sheer size – is the 844-room Grand Millennium Al
Wahda (www.millenniumhotels.com). Newly built,
all the rooms here are modern, easy on the eye and
chockfull of great amenities. Book your family into
The Penthouse and you’ll also enjoy panoramic views
of the city. Location wise it couldn’t be better placed
if you’re coming to town to shop up a storm – Al
Wahda Mall is the next door neighbour.
Meanwhile, a hotel that touts itself as being hip
is Aloft (www.starwoodhotels.com/alofthotels).
Though predominately aimed at out-of-town
business executives – it’s set within Abu Dhabi
National Exhibition Centre – this design-driven hotel
is actually great for kids. If they’re aged 2-12 they’re
welcomed into camp Aloft, which entitles them to
their own bed and specially made bedding, a goody
bag, kid-friendly food options and use of a high-tech
games room and splash pool.
If you’re looking for somewhere utterly unique,
head for the desert. Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort
By Anantara (www.anantara.com) is approximately
90 minutes away from downtown Abu Dhabi in
the towering red dunes of the Liwa Desert in the
Empty Quarter – the largest uninterrupted stretch
of sand in the world that spills across four Arab
states. Here, guests will immediately be transported
into a storybook setting that awakens the senses.
The villas all come with private pools while hints of
Bedouin tradition can be found in the hand-crafted
furnishings, rich carpets and embroidered fabrics.
Another enchanting escape can be had at Desert
Islands Resort & Spa By Anantara (www.anantara.
com). Housed on Sir Bani Yas Island, where wildlife
roams free, beach villas here offer the perfect retreat
for those who love the sea and sand. Each offers
a private pool and garden from which you have
direct access to the beach and the glistening waters
beyond. There’s also a wealth of activities to enjoy
– don’t miss the opportunity to take to the sky in a
seaplane or enjoy a wildlife drive to see the island’s
animals up close – and a quite superb spa.

The Shopping
In the 21st century the shopping mall has become
a social centre in much the same manner as the
traditional souq, with sand and wind tunnels giving
way to shiny glass and air-conditioning.
But there is still tradition to be found amongst
the glitz with many shopping centres charmingly
recreated as souqs, complete with snaking alleyways
crammed with stalls and sprinkled with tea and
coffee houses where you can meet to chew the fat
over a shisha and a strong gahwa.
Souk Qaryat Al Beri, part of the Shangri-La
Hotel Qaryat Al Beri, was built to showcase Arabian
architecture, while capturing an atmosphere of
true Middle Eastern hospitality. Located between
the Maqtaa and Musaffah bridges, the souq’s
surroundings are aptly comprised of waterways and
viaducts – hotel guests are encouraged to use abras
to transport them to the souk. Many of its restaurants
and cafes have waterside views, making it a scenic
spot for a light bite or a special dinner out. When
it comes to the shops, here you’ll find upmarket
jewellers like Damas and Pure Gold. It’s also the
site for the now legendary BeenaSoni, purveyors of
sparkly Arabian and Indian female dress wear.
With gold being one of today’s best investments,
you’ll be hard-pressed to find better deals than at the
Gold Souq in Madinat Zayed. Open from 9pm-2pm
and 4pm-11pm on Saturdays-Thursdays and 4pm-
11pm on Fridays, you’ll find gold from Saudi Arabia,
India and Europe in all carats, while pearls from
Japan and silver items from Oman are also hugely
popular. Leave your cameras at home, though, as
photography is strictly forbidden. The Madinat Zayed
Shopping centre itself is chockfull of local stores.
The SOUK at Central Market has recently
revamped Abu Dhabi’s historic souk, which for years
served as a cardinal point for the city’s commercial
life. While it retains its traditional wood and coloured
glass architectural elements utilising locally produced
materials, it has been propelled firmly into the 21st
century. The stylish construction, with its towering
pillars, blends blue patterned mosaics with oversized
floor tiles, while its slatted roof allows dappled light
to tumble through its beams. It’s worth a visit to
marvel at the design alone, but you’ll also want to
explore some of its unique outlets and lap up the
offerings at Al Sari Honey & Herbals, Rocky Mountain
and the Chocolate Factory. Those in search of
something special for the home will be enraptured
by Exquisite Antiques and Kashmir cottage.
Boutiques vary from the cute and quirky – such as
Canadian outlet Miss Coquette – to the traditional.
Armed with money to burn and an empty suitcase begging to be filled? You’ve come to the right place. In the UAE shopping is something of a national sport, with Abu Dhabi offering an exciting mix of gleaming state-of-the-art shopping malls and authentic souqs.

No self-respecting shopper will be able to stay
away from the sparkling new Dalma Mall, on the Abu
Dhabi-Tarif-Al Ain Highway, opposite Mohammad Bin
Zayed city. Abu Dhabi’s largest shopping destination,
it has no less than 480 stores and a huge array of
entertainment and dining facilities. Location wise It
is especially beneficial to those who are staying at a
hotel in Al Ain.
The label-loaded Marina Mall is where you find
Louis Vuitton, Monte Blanc, Austin Reed and the
recently reinvented Burberry. Fashion forward men
will love Rodeo Drive, a one-stop shop for designer
brands Armani, Tom Ford and Kiton, while female
shoppers looking for something attention-grabbing
should head to S*uce. It’s a fun boutique filled with
plenty of local labels, but you’ll need to be prepared
to fork out a small fortune for that statement outfit.
Marina Mall is also the place to stock up on luxury
fragrances from one of the many perfumeries such
as Areej, which is always up to date with all the latest
scents and Arabian Oud, a Saudi-based perfumer
that blends the virtues of
modernity and tradition.
For family fun, Abu Dhabi
Mall, spread over four floors,
is one of the city’s main
attractions, especially in the
summer months. It’s busy and
boisterous, but kids will love the
play areas, the musical fountains
and the nine-screen Cineplex,
while its 220 outlets and huge
array of affordable cafes and restaurants means it
has something for everyone. It is also home to the
city’s only Virgin Megastore where music and film
buffs will happily while away their day.
For something a little more sedate, Al Wahda
Mall, one of the city’s most well-known landmarks
and identifiable by it’s titanic wind towers, is home
to a large Magrudy’s bookstore, wellness and beauty
shop Solace Organics, and the tantalising Galler,
every chocoholics dream destination – all of which
will make you feel instantly calmer. The local store of
choice for bright white kanduras, Abu Haleeqa, can
also be found here, as can Khan Al Saboun which
sells divine hand-made soaps, essential oils and
perfumed candles.
Khalidiyah Mall, located in a popular residential
area, stretches expansively over three levels, and is
where you’ll locate all your high street favourites.
Its vast food hall offers fare from all corners of the
globe, while Bowling City makes for a fun place to
round off a successful shopping trip. With its elegant

atrium, a convivial roof garden and a futuristic
amusement arcade, it’s a salient centre that ticks
consumers’ boxes nicely. Well-known brands include
Debenhams, Jumbo Electronics and Paris Gallery,
where international labels are delightfully displayed
on carousels.
Abu Dhabi’s first-ever mall, the Hamdan Centre
has oodles of character and is a great spot for those
looking for a shopping experience away from the
sleek new outlets. If you have lots of friends and
family expecting gifts upon your return, they don’t
come quirkier, or more reasonably priced, than those
available here.
And if its souvenirs specifically that you’re after,
try Abu Dhabi Pottery in Khalidiyah, where you’ll
find fabulous earthenware crockery. The owner is the
popular Homa Farley who also offers fun classes in
how to master the potter’s wheel. For a beautifully
authentic artefact, House of Oud, located in a villa
behind One to One Hotel, is home to a luthier who
will carve you a personalised teardrop-shaped
instrument to take home.
But the city’s shopping doesn’t end there. Head
to the airport a few hours early to catch your flight
home and you can check out what’s on offer in the
stylish boutiques at Abu Dhabi Airport. Stop in at
Hermès for some tres chic leather accessories, at
Polo Ralph Lauren for one of the polo shirts much
loved by fashion conscious Middle Eastern men, or at
Jimmy Choo, which always makes sure to stock the
very latest styles of its much-loved shoes.

The Restaurants
That Gourmet Abu Dhabi is already in its third year
is evidence of the region’s passion for gastronomic
greatness. The annual epicurean festival, which takes
place in the month of February, brings together
internationally acclaimed chefs, restaurateurs
and industry professionals while showcasing the
emirate’s finest restaurants.
Such restaurants include the much-loved
Frankie’s Italian Restaurant & Bar (+971 2 654
3238.) at Fairmont Bab Al Bahr. A partnership
between charismatic jockey Frankie Dettori and
three Michelin-starred Marco Pierre White, Frankie’s
is neither a vanity project nor a gimmick, but one of
the best Italian dining experiences you’ll find in the
city. Offering exquisite homely fare in a warm and
sophisticated environment, it has the feel of a family-
run operation. Try the ossobuco, a Milanese specialty
of veal shanks braised with vegetables and garnished
with gremolatam, and you’ll think of nothing else for
weeks afterwards.
Not to be overshadowed, Marco Pierre White
also has his own restaurant in the same hotel, Marco
Pierre White Steakhouse & Grill (+971 2 654 3333).
Carnivores will be on cloud nine with the duck and
red meat dishes – the fillet with truffle sauce in
particular is outstanding.
Other firm favourites in the fine dining sector
include Bord Eau (+971 2 509 8888) at the Shangri-
La Hotel Qaryat Al Beri. The name may sound a tad
gimmicky, but the fine French fare on offer here is
undeniably excellent. Add to this a frivolous, non-
stuffy atmosphere and you have the ingredients for a
wonderful meal.
A classy newcomer that has been vying for our
attention is Hakkasan (+971 2 690 7999) at Emirates
Palace Hotel. With its dining area laid out in what
appears to be an oversized birdcage, the experience
is both intimate and bustling – Abu Dhabi hasn’t
seen anything like it. Cool blue lighting and electric
music abet its exhilarating ambience; this is the
place to be seen. But it would be rude not to try the
inspired codfish creation and venison dim sum while
you’re here.
A top choice for a special date is Thai favourite
Talay, at Le Méridien Abu Dhabi (+971 2 644 6666).
With a pretty courtyard setting with traditional Thai
artefacts and an authentic and all-encompassing
menu, you’re advised to book ahead. The customary
stalwarts like pad thai and tom yum goong are
accomplished, but for something a little different, try
the geangkoa subpar – a lightly spiced prawns and
mussel dish cooked with pineapple
Whether you’re after fine dining, simple but accomplished Lebanese and Asian pleasures, hearty Italian or refined French, this cosmopolitan city is well represented by cuisines that span the entire globe.

With an estimated 800,000 Indian expatriates in
Abu Dhabi it is no surprise there’s a glut of excellent
eateries from the sub continent. And impressive
Indian cuisine can be found at Angar, The Yas Hotel
(+971 2 656 0760). As its name suggests – Angar
means embers – they’re fond of char-grilling here
and the tandoori Achari prawns are smoky and
sweet, while the charcoal-grilled mashed aubergine
is an inspired dish.
Meanwhile, Indigo (+971 2 697 9000) at Beach
Rotana offers up unique (and stylish) twists on
traditional Indian cooking. With the kitchen overseen
by two of India’s most famous chefs, the Qureshi
brothers, you’re in for an extraordinary experience.
The duck tikka kebab is sublime.
Shang Palace (+971 2 509 8888), at Shangri-La
Hotel Qaryat Al Beri, serves gourmet Chinese cuisine
in a cosy setting with knowledgeable staff guiding
you through the menu. Dim sum fanatics won’t want
to miss the daily Yum Cha Festival where you can
gorge yourself on a seemingly endless array of soft
dumplings at lunchtime.
Shanghai Surprise (+971 2 678 7700) at Al Diar
Capital Hotel also serves reliable Chinese cuisine in
a warm fawn coloured setting. The chicken satay,
presented in an almost tribal fashion on six spiked
spears, is excellent.
In the past, residents of Abu Dhabi have been
willing to make a regular pilgrimage to Dubai to get
their cheap and cheerful Cantonese fix from The
Noodle Bowl, so imagine their delight upon hearing
that a branch had opened in Zayed Sports City (+971
2 447 2405). The 771 – rice noodles, pert prawns,
tender calamari, spring onions, chilli and scrambled
egg – is legendary.
The Far East is well represented in Abu Dhabi
and Kazu (+971 2 656 0760) at The Yas Hotel is
fronted by a chef who cut his teeth under the famous
Nobu. The unagi, freshwater eels that are legendary
for their stamina-giving properties, will certainly
ignite your fire and the sushi and sashimi are lip-
smackingly good.
Taiki, Al Ain Palace Hotel (+971 2 02 679 4777)
definitely feels like the real deal with booths

brimming with Japanese diners and waitresses
dressed in patterned yukatas. Try the sukiyaki,
Japanese hotpot, which is a massive, meaty, hearty
treat of slow cooked beef, tofu, vegetable and
noodles.
For a buzzing atmosphere complete with a
karaoke booth, Wasabi (+971 2 678 1000) at Al Diar
Mina Hotel has tables closed off with paper screens
and some low lying tables that require you to slip of
your shoes in order to get comfortable. Vegetarians
will adore the deep fried agedashi tofu textured like
marshmallows.
Wasabi’s little sister Toki (+971 2 681 4151) at the
Hilton Abu Dhabi excels at chirashi sushi, which is
basically sushi that has been let loose on the plate
with slivers of raw fish and slices of Asian vegetables
splayed atop a bed of scattered sushi rice.
If you’re keen to try Emirati food, Emirates
Palace’s Mezlai (+971 2 690 7999) professes to
be the only Emirati restaurant in the city and it is
certainly worth visiting this two-levelled restaurant
with its own private majlis. A creamy harees of
ground wheat and meat cooked for 12 hours is a
favourite, as is the hammour majboos, which bursts
with dried lime, turmeric, cardamom and nutmeg.
You can also try 15 types of bread, created by the
man who was Sheikh Zayed’s personal breadmaker
for 16 years.
The city’s most-loved Lebanese is without a
doubt Barouk at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Abu
Dhabi Yas Island (+971 2 656 3053). With such stiff
competition it’s hard to stand head and shoulders
above the rest, but Barouk does just that. It’s patent
to see (and taste) that the Executive Chef Danny
Kattar is a Lebanese national who takes great pride
in his smoky moutabels, crispy fatoushs’ and nutty
flavoured kibbehs.
A sparkling new favourite is Tarbouche Al Basha

(+971 2 628 2220) at The SOUK at Central Market.
The fresh salads and wicked desserts mean it’s ideal
for ladies that lunch, while the impressive mixed grills
will satisfy those with an enthusiastic appetite.
Mawal, Al Khubeirah (+971 2 681 1900) tends to
polarise diners. You’ll either love the venue with its
shoulder-to-shoulder tables and the crowd-pleasing
belly dancer, or you’ll leave early clutching your ears
before the singer has even come on. If they’re in
season, the crunchy grilled sparrows are a hit.
Given that you are surrounded by the sea you’re
advised to sample its rich offerings. Finz, Beach
Rotana Abu Dhabi (+971 2 697 9000) may have
experienced a slight slump last year but, with a new
chef firmly entrenched, it is back in fighting form.
Perched at the edge of a jetty above the lapping
waves, it’s extremely romantic. You’ll love the sako
tuna composition prettily presented with garlands
of fennel, while the immense seafood mixed grill
of tuna, hammour, seabass, calamari, scallops and
prawn is simply sensational.
At both Fishmarket, InterContinental Abu Dhabi
(+971 2 666 6888) and Il Paradiso, Sheraton Abu
Dhabi Hotel & Resort (+971 2 697 0224), you get to
select your freshly caught fish from a glass counter
and then decide on your preferred cooking method,
sides and sauce – making these two restaurants ideal
for picky eaters.
Those with a taste for Beluga caviar will do well
at the chic Pearls & Caviar, Shangri-La Hotel Qaryat
Al Beri (+971 2 509 8888). Boasting sought-after
views of the Maqta Creek and Sheikh Zayed Mosque,
Caviar, the restaurant downstairs, is upmarket but
not overly pretentious.
For those who prefer their meat to come from
the land, you’re spoilt for choice in Abu Dhabi with
wagyu, considered the premium cut of beef because
of its extensive marbling, available in most of thhe
city’s upscale steakhouses.
Blue Grill, Yas Island Rotana (+971 2 656 4000)
offers a lean and friendly cut of the aforementioned
wagyu that will appeal to those watching their waist.
At Meat Co., Souk Qaryat Al Beri (+971 2 558

South African beef buffs serve excellent steaks from
both their own country and Australia, but it’s worth
trying something distinctly South African. such as
the boerewors and pap – thick spicy sausages on a
stack of polenta mash.
18OZ, One to One Hotel (+971 2 495 2000) has
a formidable T-bone steak that’s burning for you
to take it on. A well-seasoned slab of meat, the
whopping hunk – 504 grams to be precise – of
Angus beef is incredibly tasty. A slick spot, there
are some tongue-in-cheek touches such as a huge
plaque of a menu shaped like a ‘genuine leather’
shoe tag and animal skin rugs to offset the glossy
dark wood.
A recent survey by hotels.com has declared Italian
food to be the world’s favourite. And it doesn’t get
much better than at Bice, Hilton Abu Dhabi (+971
2 681 1900). A classy but homely establishment,
the exceptional service extends to the waiters
remembering your name on return visits. The meat,
fish and pasta dishes all come highly recommended
Azur, Al Raha Beach Hotel (+971 2 508 0555) has
a strict no pizza policy, illustrating it’s a restaurant
that takes itself seriously. The charcoal and ‘Country
of Siole’ selections prove to be highly innovative.
A quaint cottage-like structure that opens onto a
garden, it is also a fun venue for brunch.
But if it’s pizza you’re craving, then head to
Pappagallo (+971 2 644 6666) at Le Méridien Abu
Dhabi’s convivial courtyard. A popular spot that
doles out prized pizzas and generously portioned
mains, the duck, blue cheese and sweet pepper pizza
proves to be a surprisingly winning combination.
A new contemporary cream and brown restaurant
with views over the rolling golf course and the
sparkling sea, Filini, Radisson Blu Hotel, Abu Dhabi
Yas Island (+971 2 656 2000) is an attractive spot
serving commendable antipasti, pizza, pasta, meat
and fish dishes.
Not to be outdone by the Italians (although they
did come second in the survey), the French have
their stake in Abu Dhabi too. For down to earth
French with rustic charm, Le Beaujolais, Novotel
Centre Hotel Abu Dhabi (+971 2 633 3555) bursts
at the seams with French diners which is always
a positive sign given their belief that they are all
born gourmands. The baked onion soup with a slab
of gooey Emmental is a hug in a bowl, while the
Burgundy-style escargot is served in a dreamy sauce
that would make Paris proud.

The Sightsand Culture
Abu Dhabi is home to one of the world’s most striking
religious buildings, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.
It’s reported to be the third largest in the world and is
also home to the world’s biggest hand-woven carpet,
made out of an impressive 35 tons of wool and cotton.
Visitors are welcome to join public tours of the mosque,
which are held at 10am from Sunday to Thursday and
at 5pm on the same days. On Fridays you can take the
tour at 2pm, 5pm and 8pm.
If you’d like to see what life was like in Abu Dhabi pre
soaring skyscrapers and megaprojects, take a trip to
the city’s Heritage Village, where you can experience
authentic Bedouin culture as well as life in a pre-oil
Arabian village.
Back in modern day Abu Dhabi, the art scene in the
city has really taken off in recent years. Gallery One
in Emirates Palace has exhibited some of the world’s
most eminent artists, including Picasso, as well as
works from art patrons secured by Christies. Exhibitions
change regularly so check with your concierge for
the latest displays. Also in Emirates Palace is Barakat
Gallery, which sits alongside branches in London and
Los Angeles and specialises in ancient art. Antiquities
from China, Egypt, the Near East, Africa, Pre-Columbia
and ancient Greece and Rome are all on show and
every item is for sale. Also well worth a look at Emirates
Palace is the permanent exhibition that showcases the
ambitious plans for the Saadiyat Island Cultural District
development – and the even larger goal of developing
cultural tourism in the region.
Ghaf Art Gallery in Al Khalidiyah is the city’s newest
gallery, where monthly exhibits feature the work of
both local and international artists. While Acento
Gallery – which wouldn’t look out of place in London’s
trendy Hoxton – is Abu Dhabi’s first warehouse style
exhibition space. It specialises in works from Spain and
Latin America. Meanwhile, a great place to become
acquainted with Arabic art and to pick up hand-crafted
goods while you do is Hemisphere Design Studio &
Gallery in Al Markaziyah.
The elegant National Theatre and Culture Centre
plays an important role in promoting all forms of
cultural and artistic works, so be sure to check out
what’s on there during your stay in the city. Though if
stand-up comedy is more your cultural choice, try the
ever popular Laughter Factory, which takes once a
month at Crowne Plaza Abu Dhabi.
Over in Al Ain, Al Jahili Fort, erected in 1898 as
the home of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, is
the city’s proudest historical sight. With restoration
Having invested vast sums of capital to diversify its economy and expand the tourism and business sectors, Abu Dhabi is also intent on holding onto its proud heritage, with plenty of revenue pumped into art, culture, historical and conservation projects.

work approved by UNESCO, the reinstated
fort combines a mix of traditional materials
and construction techniques with the latest
technology. It also houses the Al Ain National
Museum, which boasts the best collection of
Arabian artefacts in the UAE – some dating as far
back as the Bronze Age.
The UAE’S most famous mountain, Jebel
Hafeet, rises regally out of the sand dunes in Al
Ain. It may not be the country’s highest, but at
1,240m it is still a giddying drive to its summit,
making for an exhilarating road trip. Sporting
fantastic views of the garden city of Al Ain as
well as Oman, at the base of the mountain you’ll
encounter the Green Mubazzarrah where locals
love to spend their weekends in the quaint
cottages for hire. The segregated hot springs are
perfect for unwinding in – especially if you’ve
taken the health nut approach of hiking up and
down the mountain.

If you enjoy the sight of wildlife, Abu Dhabi has
some truly great places where you can watch the
animals roam. Be one of the few people in the world
to marvel at the magnificence of rare white lions at
the Al Ain Wildlife Park & Resort. As part of their
ongoing commitment to protecting and preserving
endangered wildlife, the 900-hectare park has teamed
up with zoologists in South Africa to look after a pride
of the proud white lions of Sambona. They are in good
company – there are over 4,300 animals in this oasis
setting which is a fantastic place to learn about wildlife
and conservation.
Off the western coastline of Abu Dhabi lies Bu Tinah
Island, a unique wonder of the wilderness undisturbed
by human activity. A novel living laboratory, this
distinctive natural habitat, with its shallow waters,
soaring mangroves and colourful coral reefs, is home
to rare and globally endangered marine life. One of the
28 official finalists for the ‘New7Wonders of Nature,’ Bu
Tinah Island is also home to flamingo, osprey, diverse
species of dolphins, the rare hawksbill turtle and the
planet’s second-largest population of dugong, a large
marine mammal that is globally threatened.
At the Arabian Wildlife Park on Sir Bani Yas
Island you can continue your love affair with the great
outdoors. A remote salt dome island established in
1971, oryx, gazelles and giraffes roam free thanks to
successful breeding programmes. The island is also
home to to four majestic cheetahs, the only ones in the
region not held in captivity.
For further encounters with wildlife, the state-of-
the-art Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital, with its huge
aviary and tranquil outdoor areas is an eye-opening
experience. A veterinary facility dedicated to caring for
these majestic birds, it employs 52 people and treats
over 5,000 birds a year. The scale of this project is
testament to the popularity of falconry in the UAE and
its importance to the country’s heritage.

Activities and AdventureMalaysia is a dream destination for adventurous types and families who want to get out and about to enjoy the great outdoors. There are hundreds of wonderous expeditions to choose from: here’s our pick of the country...
One of the biggest names for families visiting
Malaysia is Genting Highlands, an hour’s drive
northeast of Kuala Lumpur. This place is the king of
resorts and can be accessed via the lofty Genting
Skyway cable car. It’s home to three separate
theme parks, including a water park, an outdoor
theme park and the first world indoor theme park,
all of which are stacked to the rafters with brilliant
rides and attractions. You could spend a good few
days working your way around this place, so be
certain not to miss out on key rides, like the Rolling
Thunder Mine Train, the Sungai Rejang Flume Ride
and the fabulously fun Bumper Boats. The resort is
also home to five performance areas, which host
fantastic concerts – check in advance to see what’s
on during your visit…
Meanwhile, just a quarter of an hour’s drive
outside of Kuala Lumpur is Desa Water Park,
a mini city devoted to aquatic pleasures. Bring
your swimming costume and spend a day being
knocked about by the Shock Wave, zipping along
on the Super Tube, chilling out in the Bubble Pool
and screaming your head off as you descend
Action River and the legendary Thunderbolt, Asia’s
longest Master Blaster. Up in Sungai Petani in the
north there’s another great – although somewhat
smaller – waterpark, The Carnivall, which has a
series of excellent rubber ring rides.
Further south in Melaka, you’ll find the A’Famosa
resort. As well as having top golf facilities and a
super-fun waterpark, A’Famosa is famed for its
animal attractions, notably the Animal World
Safari. Here you can take a trip around 150
beautiful acres and see zebras, tigers, camels,
giraffes, elephants and lions, before popping over
to Monkey Island to meet the primates. You can
also let your little ones pet camels, rabbits and
ponies. In Teluk Sengat in the south east, there’s an
incredible Crocodile Farm, where over a thousand
toothsome beauties are on show. Take a tour and
watch the crocs being fed fish and whole chickens,
before picking up a baby snapper – if you dare.
Nearby, another wonderworld for animal fans is
the brilliant Ostrich Farm in Sungai Rengit, where
you can view baby ostriches being tended by their
parents. Meanwhile, over in Sabah in Malaysian
Borneo, there are jaw-dropping sights on offer
at the Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary. Located in
Sandakan out on the east coast, this place allows
you to get up close with the majestic orange
beasts, which are looked after as part of Malaysia’s
eco-protection programme.
If smaller – but equally cute – creatures are more
your thing, head to the Penang Butterfly Farm in
Malaysia 101_activities.indd 21 10/28/2010 10:50:40 AM
The Activities
Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island has really caught the
imagination of the world. Aside from its spectacular
Formula One track, it’s also home to a host of hotels,
perhaps most notably the futuristic Yas Hotel, and
entertainments galore.
When not hosting the F1 in November, Yas Marina
Circuit (+971 2 4460 384) also features one of the
world’s other top motor racing series’. A full calendar
of motorsport events include the GP2 Asia Series
– where the future stars of Formula 1 go head to
head – as well as Australia’s legendary motor racing
series, the V8 Supercars, the International Drag
Racing Festival and the FIA GT Championship. If
you fancy a spin round the track yourself, there’s an
opportunity to do that, too.
At the end of 2010, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi
(+971 2 496 8001) was unveiled – the world’s first
and largest attraction of its kind. With more than
20 rides and attractions lying beneath the iconic
200,000 square metered red roof, Ferrari World
captures the sights, sounds and scents of Italy, while
delighting visitors with its exhilarating rides. Each
and every attraction tells a piece of the legendary
Ferrari story: powerful cars, racing triumphs and
technical innovation. Don’t miss the 4-D adventure,
a hair-raising ride through the grill of a Ferrari 599
that fires you out of its exhaust. You’ll also find the
world’s fastest rollercoaster here as well as the
G-force that blasts daredevils through the roof. Kids,
meanwhile, are afforded the opportunity to get their
first thrill of being behind the wheel at the fanntastic
Ferrari Academy.
Yas Island is also where you can tee-off on the
Yas Links Abu Dhabi Golf Course (+971 2 656 0700)
the vision of world-renowned course designer Kyle
Phillips. Its rolling hills and greens overlook flat seas
– the giveaway that you’re not in Scotland or Ireland
– while its golf club features a floodlit driving range,
a nine-hole par three academy course, and a stylish
4,000-square-metre clubhouse.
For further opportunities to lower your handicap,
The Abu Dhabi Golf Club (+971 2 558 8990) has
one of the best courses in the Middle East. It’s home
to the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, the
tournament started in 2006 and is now one of the
biggest events on the PGA European Tour, regularly
attracting golf’s most famous names. Where else
in the world will you come across a clubhouse
built in the shape of a falcon with its wings spread
majestically over the 18th hole?
Saadiyat Beach Golf Club (+971 2 557 8000),

Boasting the world’s best Formula One track as well as the first Ferrari World, Abu Dhabi is great for adrenaline-fuelled fun. Then there’s the city’s expansive corniche, its world-class golf courses, the calm seas – home to over 200 islands – and sand dunes, Abu Dhabi has it all…

magnificent 18-hole masterpiece hugging the
coastline which reinforces the emirate’s fast-rising
status as a world-class golfing destination of
distinction.
For a round with a difference, eschew grass for
sand. That’s what you’ll find covering all 18-holes at
Al Ghazal Golf Club (+971 2 575 8040), which stands
so close to the airport you can probably play a few
holes before hopping aboard your flight home. The
fact that golfing equipment can be rented makes this
more than doable and the experience of navigating
your way around what amounts to an endless series
of bunkers and superfast greens (or browns in this
case) is one well worth enjoying.
For more leisurely pursuits, head to the city’s
lengthy corniche. A unique attribute that sets Abu
Dhabi apart from its neighbours, it stretches along
six kilometres of its glistening coastline from the
Sheraton Hotel to the Hilton Hotel. It’s dotted with
gardens and fountains which can, in fact, be found
at every intersection of the corniche. With some of
the capital’s best sandy beaches to be found along
this stretch, it is popular with sun-worshippers and
picnickers. Containing clearly demarcated areas
for walking, cycling, beach volleyball, children’s
playgrounds and swimming areas – monitored by
lifeguards – the area has a tangible buzz as the
tangerine sun sets and city workers head here to
wind down for the day.
To see the corniche from a different angle, head
out to sea for a tour by boat Companies like Yellow
Boat Tours (+971 800 4034) will afford you unique
views of Al Reem Island, Al LuLu Island, Saadiyat
Island and the corniche as you sail across the sea. If
that puts you in the mood to enjoy the water to the
fullest, Blue Dolphin Company (+971 2 6262200)
offers a wide range of recreational and water sports
activities including snorkelling, fishing, diving,
banana boat rides and waterskiing, while you can’t

Desert Adventures’ dhow dinner cruise (+971 2 556

stunning yachts and can tailor-make chartered trips

The world’s latest sporting crazes can also be
found in the emirate. At the Abu Dhabi Stand Up
Paddle Club (+971 50 905 9743), near to Emirates
Palace, you can learn to conquer the sport that
everyone’s been talking about since Jennifer Aniston
was spotted astride one of these big boards. Stand
Up Paddling (SUP) is easier than surfing, doesn’t
require waves and even though you’re standing up,
it’s not as tricky as canoeing in that you’re less likely
to roll your board. Just 30 minutes will also have
a significant impact on your abs, so what are you
waiting for?
Al Raha Beach Hotel (+971 2 508 0555) offers
kayaking and windsurfing, while water-based
activities at the Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi (+971 2
697 9000) and the Hiltonia Beach Club (+971 2 681

wakeboarding and waterskiing.
If you don’t mind getting your hair wet, the Al
Mahara Centre (+971 50 720 2833) in Mussafah
offers PADI scuba diving courses for groups and
individuals as well as kids’ programmes and ladies
only sessions. You can also check out the diving
opportunities at the Abu Dhabi Sub Aqua Club
(+971 2 673 1111) in the Tourist Club Area of the city
and Arabian Divers & Sportfishing Charters (+971

681 3064) up the ante by embracing virtually every
water sport known to mankind and making them
available to in a selection of great packages.
For island fun further afield, hop onto one of the
six daily ferries from Jebel Al Dhanna Port (+971 4

to 6,000 inhabitants. Once a bustling hub for the
Gulf’s pearl trading industry, it is set for a surge in
development and tourism.

around campfires. South Travels (+971 4 295 6452)
offers day trips to Liwa, stopping at an authentic
Bedouin camp and camel farm on route with lunch
at the Liwa rest house. Arabian Adventures (+971 2

Tours (+971 2 444 9914) are also well-respected
tour operating companies offering an exhaustive
range of desert safaris and trips which come with
refreshments and an informative guide included. For
city-based tours, you can’t beat Big Bus Tours (+971
800 244 287), a hop-on, hop-off sightseeing tour of
Abu Dhabi, taking in all of the famous landmarks.
For the best bird’s eye views of the emirate,
Balloon Adventures Emirates (+971 4 285 4949)
offers unforgettable early-morning adventures
with their bewitching balloon rides. Operating out
of Al Ain, visitors will benefit from a truly unique
perspective of shimmering dunes, verdant oases
and roaming camels and gazelles. If a helicopter
ride is on your bucket list, then get in touch with the
Falcon Aviation Services (+971 2 444 8866) for an
exhilarating flight that comes with the highest level
of luxury.
Families with kids in tow will love Zayed Sports
City which has a 40-lane bowling alley at the Khalifa

You cannot leave Abu Dhabi without trying one
of its many first-class spas – the Moroccan and
Turkish styled hammans, in particular, will ensure
you to chill out in true Middle Eastern mode. The
Emirates Palace’s enchanting Anantara Spa (+971 2
690 9000) will transport you to an ethereal world
where you’ll be rewarded with a restorative tonic
for the body and soul. With its ‘Gateway to Arabia’
package you’ll be scrubbed, rubbed, wrapped,
steamed, frozen (in the ice cave) and massaged so
comprehensively you’ll barely recognise the person
sporting the soft silky skin afterwards.
The Lounge (+971 2 667 7377) in Khalidiyah is the
capital’s finest male only spa. A one stop grooming,
pampering and preening shop, here men can enjoy
a wonderful massage as well as relaxing Moroccan
steam baths. For those who are really looking to
release their inner Adonis, they also offer fake
tanning and manicure and pedicure service.
CHI Spa (+971 2 509 8900) at the Shangri-La
Quaryat al Beri blends Arabic traditions and Asian
philosophies, with therapies based on the ancient
healing traditions of China and the Himalayas. Their
signature treatment is the CHI balance massage to
stabilise the ying and yang in the body. A ritualistic
footbath is followed by a rousing massage and
topped off with a relaxing facial. It’s the perfect
place to get in touch with your chakras, balance your
aura and, above all, be pampered.
It may sound a bit like Chinese torture, but the
Bamboo massage at Zen Spa (+971 2 6979333) at
the Beach Rotana Hotel, is surprisingly enjoyable
and highly effective in unknotting your muscles with
springy rods made from bamboo. This light, bright
spa trickles with relaxing water features and also
offers a comprehensive range of facials – you’ll love
the anti-ageing effects of the Ylang Ylang treatment.
A new and sophisticated addition to the city’s
spa portfolio is ESPA at the Yas Hotel (+971 2 656
0862). One of their signature treatments, the
Tension Soother, will go a long way in alleviating
deep-seated tension. A hot volcanic stone treatment
is followed by a soft marine algae mud wrap which is
akin to finding yourself in a comforting cocoon.
