Match backgroundAC Milan will be anxious not to repeat the mistakes that have led to their UEFA Champions League exits at the handsof Premier League opponents in recent years when they welcome Arsenal FC.

In 2007/08 it was Arsenal themselves who began apoor sequence for Milan against English sides when they triumphed at this stage, meaning the Italian club's last threecampaigns have been ended in the last 16 by English opponents with a home defeat on each occasion.

Previous meetings• The encounter four years ago, when Milan were the reigning champions, was the teams' first in the UEFA ChampionsLeague. The London leg ended goalless with Arsène Wenger's team progressing thanks to late goals from CescFàbregas (84) and Emmanuel Adebayor (90+2) at San Siro.

• A creative attacking midfielder, Allegri started out in his native Tuscany with Cuoiopelli and then Livorno, his hometownclub. First appeared in Serie A for Pisa against Milan in 1988/89 but played only twice that season before headingback to Livorno.

• Returned to Serie A after helping Pescara win promotion in 1992. The following term he scored 12 goals underGiovanni Galeone, the coach Allegri still considers his mentor. After leaving Pescara in 1993, had spells at Cagliari,Perugia, Padova and Napoli before hanging up his boots back in Tuscany with fourth division Aglianese in 2003.

• Moved straight into coaching at Aglianese, prior to taking charge at SPAL and Grosseto. In November 2008 he wonthe Panchina d'Oro (golden bench) as the third division's best coach having led Sassuolo to promotion.

• Had earlier been appointed by Cagliari whom he led to ninth place in 2009, winning the Panchina d'Oro again, thistime as Serie A's best coach. Cagliari started the following season superbly but a bad run of results prompted Allegri'sdismissal on 13 April 2010 – although he had already done enough to earn a two-year contract at Milan.

• Allegri's first season at San Siro ended with his new club winning the Scudetto for the first time since 2004. In January2012 he extended his contract until June 2014. • Born in Strasbourg, Wenger worked at Strasbourg and Cannes before Nancy-Lorraine offered him his big break. He impressed sufficiently to be offered the job as coach of Monaco in 1987.

• Within a year Monaco scooped the French championship and Wenger the Coach of the Year award. After reportedlyturning down France and FC Bayern München, he moved on to Japan and enjoyed tremendous success with NagoyaGrampus Eight.

• Appointed by Arsenal in September 1996, Wenger became the first non-Briton to win the Premier League in 1998,adding the first of four FA Cup triumphs. The Gunners lost the 2000 UEFA Cup final to Galatasaray SK but claimedanother double in 2002, and in 2004 played some thrilling attacking football en route to becoming the first team since1889 to negotiate a top-flight season unbeaten.

• Wenger nearly topped all his achievements by taking Arsenal to the 2006 UEFA Champions League final, only forFC Barcelona to come from behind to win 2-1. Arsenal's move to their new stadium later that year was also instigatedby Wenger.

Competition factsUEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know?

• Teams have recovered from a first-leg deficit to go through on 24 occasions although only twice – AFC Ajax's defeatof Panathinaikos FC in the 1995/96 semi-finals and FC Internazionale Milano's win against FC Bayern München inthe 2010/11 round of 16 – has a side progressed after a home first-leg loss. The biggest losing margin a side hasoverturned was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals when they lost 4-1 at AC Milanbut won 4-0 at home.

• Twenty ties have been decided on the away goals rule, including six where the triumphant team lost the first leg.

• FC Bayern München hold the record for the biggest first-leg lead with a 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugalin the 2008/09 first knockout round, eventually going through 12-1 after a 7-1 home victory in the second leg. Thosetwo games also featured more goals (13) over its two legs than any previous UEFA Champions League knockout tie.

• Ten ties have gone to penalties, including the game between Arsenal FC and AS Roma in the 2008/09 round of 16.Five of these were finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2008. The first two-legged tie decided on spot-kicks was PSVEindhoven's 4-2 win against Olympique Lyonnais on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw.

• In all, 17 ties have required extra time. So far seven have been decided by extra time alone: four quarter-finals, twofirst knockout round encounters and the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC.

• There has never been a knockout tie ending goalless after two legs. Ten have finished 1-0 on aggregate, mostrecently Tottenham Hotspur FC's narrow victory against AC Milan in the 2010/11 round of 16.

• Clarence Seedorf is the only player to win the European Cup with three clubs (AFC Ajax 1995, Real Madrid CF1998, AC Milan 2003, 2007). Liverpool's Bob Paisley (1977, 1978, 1981) is the only coach to win three times.

• Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund 1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983) andJosé Mourinho (FC Porto 2004, FC Internazionale Milano 2010) are the only coaches to win the trophy with two clubs.

• No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last clubto win consecutive European Champion Clubs' Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996,1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the final as holders only to lose.

• Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final inMunich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United FC lost the 2011 final in London. Five teamswon Champion Clubs' Cup finals on home soil: Real Madrid CF (1957), FC Internazionale Milano (1965), ManchesterUnited FC (1968), AFC Ajax (1972) and Liverpool FC (1978), while Stade de Reims Champagne (1956), AS Roma(1984) and FC Barcelona (1986) all lost finals in their own country.
