Les entreprises multinationales ont aujourd’hui une fâcheuse tendance à confondre la communication, le marketing, la conformité et l’habillage humanitaire de leurs opérations de terrain. La firme Coca Cola est-elle tombée dans cette facilité ? On peut se poser la question en analysant les tentants et les aboutissants de ses actions caritatives sur le sol africain, commela construction de points d’eau au Soudan ou au Sénégal.

Valorisation des produits forestiers non-ligneux des zones arides et semi-arides

A l’instar du pétrole qui voit son cours grimper lorsque les pays producteurs menacent de fermer le robinet, le prix de la gomme arabique va-t-il s’envoler, suite aux déclarations de l’ambassadeur du Soudan aux Etats-Unis ? Dans la conférence de presse qu’il a tenue, à Washington, la semaine dernière pour récuser les accusations de génocide au Darfour, le diplomate soudanais a sorti son joker : son pays pourrait suspendre ses exportations de gomme arabique vers les Etats-Unis en représailles aux sanctions économiques aggravées prises par la Maison Blanche. Ce qui compromettrait la production de Coca Cola.

La moitié des pays du monde se situent pour tout ou partie dans des zones arides et semi-arides. Celles-ci, avec leurs marges sub-humides couvrent une superficie totale d'environ 45 millions de km², soit le tiers de la superficie totale des terres émergées. La dégradation écologique s'étend à une vitesse alarmante dans ces zones, où elle menace les moyens d'existence d'environ 850 millions d'habitants.
