While every semester is an experiment and a step further into learnings, this spring semester commenced with a hustling study environment where every program is rethinking their ways on how the students learn more in a cohesive way. One of them is to exhibit work for exchange of learnings happening at various study sites and domains.

The spring semester in FP is brimming with enthusiasm and hard work. Students enrolled in Masters in Urban Planning are envisioning to make a Development Plan for the cities of Surat, Rajkot and Bharuch-Ankleshwar. Masters in Urban Design sees students realize a neighborhood level master plan in Gandhinagar by understanding the key elements of urban design while also exploring ways to prepare drawings that communicate better. Masters in Infrastructure program involves students conceptualize an infrastructural plan, its preliminary cost estimates and prepare pilot demonstration proposals while working on the principles of sustainability, inclusiveness and resilience. Students pursuing Masters in Urban Housing are looking forward to unlock housing markets of Vadodara through policies, programs and regulations.

Winter School 2018, Illustrated by Aditi Rai

The Faculty of Planning is constantly involved in resolving issues pertaining to Indian cities. It conducts numerous short-duration courses in the form of summer winter schools to improve the knowledge of students and professionals in this regard.

This year’s winter schools were aimed at improving the participants’ knowledge on varied aspects in the urban domain. The pedagogy included lectures, exercises as well as immersive field visits.

One of the courses, taught by Prof. Purvi Bhatt and Ar. Lalit Bharti, focussed on proposing urban design policies for public spaces in the mixed-use belt of Auroville. Three courses analysed cities with reference to their water resources. The first, under the guidance of Dr Mona Khakhar and Ms Rutool Sharma, was aimed at analysing the issues faced by the natural water systems of Ahmedabad and Bangalore; the second course examined the inter-relationship of water features with the cultural heritage and socio-economic settings of cities, focussing on the forts of Rajasthan; it was taken up by Prof. Ashwani Kumar. Lastly, under the guidance of Ar. Nitish Vidyadhar and Ar. Tanvi Patil, students analysed the musings around step-wells and their impacts on the surrounding spaces. Proposals in the form of presentations and booklets showcased the learning outcomes of these courses.

B.UD INFORMAL TALKS

FP LECTURE SERIES CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIESThe B.UD Informal Talks Series is an initiative taken by the Faculty of Planning to help students gain clarity about the discipline of Urban Design and seeks to inform the students about the scope of the discipline. Practising Urban Designers are called to give informative lectures that are open to all, where they talk about their own experiences in the field.

The Informal Talks session by Mr. Shantesh Kelvekar was held on 9th August, 2019. Mr. Kelvekar has a Bachelor’s in Architecture and a Master’s degree in Urban Design. He is currently practising as a Landscape Urbanist at Reading Grounds, a Bangalore-based landscape and ecological planning studio. He is also the director of an online magazine started by architects that tries to help people break away from theoretical jargon through stories and comics.

Mr. Kelvekar spoke about landscape urbanism and about how architecture is not just about erecting walls, but is also an integral part of the environment surrounding these walls. The first part of the lecture discussed the general perceptions

The monsoon semester commenced with an ice-breaking session and elections, pushing interaction amongst students.

The Ice-breaking session, organized on 27th July, for First Year PG students, was extremely interactive. It informed students about the structure and functioning of the Student’s Council.

FP elections were held amongst UG and PG students, where a ballot followed the manifesto reading and campaigning. The UG elections were held in two phases on 8th May & 19th July; where Siddhraj Desai was

This month we got a glimpse of the planning perspective in New Zealand. A lecture on “Effects-based Planning: Driving Innovation and Resilience” was delivered on August 19, 2019 by Dr Hamish Rennie, Associate Professor, Department of Environmental Management, Lincoln University, New Zealand.

Many countries are shifting from traditional planning methods to unconventional ones. In this lecture, Dr Rennie began with the inefficiency of the top-down Master Plan and Land Use Capability classification system. He emphasised on Effect-based planning as it sustainably manages rates and impacts the use of resources to enable present and future generations to meet reasonably foreseeable needs.

He talked about market-based approach, where the developer is responsible for the sustainability of the plot and must propose a

about landscape, while the second part spoke about the beginning of landscape urbanism and its importance in urban spaces.

The lecture concluded with a talk about how lightly one tends to take the environment, in day-to-day life. He gave the example of a temple, which was initially just an idol underneath a tree; ironically enough, the same tree later is cut down to construct a building.

There have been cases where change in land use has boosted the economy, like the Geesin family’s grape vineyard and marine farms that solved the problems of yachts.

I had an opportunity to work with UNICEF in the area of WASH in diverse states of Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Assam and Rajasthan, all unique with different set of challenges and opportunities.

SK: How has CEPT helped in shaping you career and how was the transition from student life to becoming a professional?

RH: Professional life is quite different from college life. However, the skills acquired in CEPT allowed in an easier transition for me. The laboratories and studio exercises exposed me to the tools which I still use in my profession. During my college days, opportunity to interact with classmates from different area of specialisation has enabled me in my work to coordinate better with my diverse team, allowing effective communication with them and achieving sustained results for children. CEPT acted as a platform to exchange ideas, debate and discuss on a gamut of topics; this further made me a good learner, a quintessential skill in professional life.SK: What was your experience in CEPT beyond academics?

LAP around Transit, an illustrated handbook for Indian Cities, was released on 5th August, 2019 after a thorough research on the same since June 2017.

Research on the topic commenced in June 2017, with an intent to contextualize TOD in case of Indian cities. Based on the research headed by Prof. Rutul Joshi, a manual was prepared for other cities in the form of an illustrated handbook, ‘LAP around Transit’, which released on 5th August, 2019 in collaboration with Town and Country Planning Organisation (TCPO), Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), SHAKTI Sustainable Energy Foundation and CEPT University. The handbook is coordinated by Mr. Joshi along with research associates Prasanth Narayana, Anshula Menon and Ananya Ramesh. Many students too have contributed towards the research carried out in different cities regarding the subject. It talks about development around transit while emphasizing that TOD is not just limited to vertical expansion. It has more to do with accessibility then proximity.

CEPT provides. I am reminded of a statement by our ex-director during my joining of graduation programme in 1995, “CEPT is like a flowing river, make the most of this opportunity by gathering as much knowledge as possible”. Also, I would suggest that students can consciously choose courses/ electives and assignments in their chosen area of interest and build on it over every semester, this will help while moving into professional world.
