Infinite&Content&Academic"libraries"struggle"with"a"preponderance"of"content"in"many"different"forms,"from"print"books,"to"ebooks"(as"we"think"of"ebooks—electronic"versions"of"print"titles—as"well"as"PDFs,"web"pages"like"Project"Gutenberg,"Google"Books"page"scans,"and"so"on),"to"databases,"to"journals"and"periodicals,"to"streaming"video"and"other"media."So"a"library’s"“collection”"is"the"aggregate"of"all"these"things."The"primary"challenge"they"face"is"determining"what"materials"to"acquire"and"in"what"format.""As"we"said"in"our"2016'Survey'of'Ebook'Usage'in'U.S.'Academic'Libraries,"academic"libraries"differ"from"public"libraries"in"that"their"collections"exist"for"two"different"purposes:"to"provide"students"and"faculty"with"books"for"coverZtoZcover"reading—for"coursework"or"pleasure—and"to"facilitate"and"support"scholarly"research"for"essays,"theses,"and"student/faculty"papers"intended"for"journal"articles"or"other"publications."As"a"result,"users"have"a"different"rationale"for"how"they"use"books"in"general"and"ebooks"in"particular.""Indeed,"even"the"same"user"can"have"two"different"approaches"to"using"books."So"when"we"find,"as"we"did"in"our"2016"study,"that"the"leading"barrier"to"ebook"adoption"was"that"“students"prefer"print,”"we"need"to"understand"that"they"don’t"prefer"print"for"all"types"of"content"or"in"every"situation."This"study"suggests"that"arts"and"humanities"materials"are"more"likely"to"be"embraced"in"print,"while"eZversions"of"science"and"technology"materials"are"more"popular.""Almost"a"decade"of"ebook"research"has"also"found"that"ebook"usability"issues"have"not"been"resolved"to"everyone’s"satisfaction,"particularly"among"academic"libraries."As"we"wrote"in"the"2016"report:"

Think"about"the"graduate"student"in"the"pressureZcooker"environment"that"grad"school"can"be."If"s/he"is"in"any"of"the"sciences,"s/he’s"designing"and"running"experiments,"hoping"the"results"support"the"thesis"they"have"been"designed"to"prove,"and"doing"all"the"necessary"literature"reviews,"often"on"a"deadline."With"all"that"going"on,"is"there"any"time"or"patience"for"problems"with"the"basic"usability"of"research"materials?"Print"is,"most"of"the"time,"a"completely"hassleZfree"format."Any"ebook"platform"truly"designed"to"serve"the"academic"student"needs"to"be"cognizant"of"and"address"these"issues."

Negative"comments"about"DRM"issues"in"ebooks"persist,"and"they"remain"one"of"the"primary"barriers"to"ebook"adoption"and"why"print"is"so"often"the"favored"format.""
