Plagiarism

Page 44: Academic year 2012 – 2013 Els Martens els.martens @ kuleuven.be

PlagiarismWhy does someone plagiarize?

There are various reasons why someone plagiarizes by mistake, or consciously seeks

refuge in plagiarism, for instance:

o Lack of knowledge and/or research skills o Careless use of source material o Lack of time (whether or not accompanied by lack of interest) o One suspects a lack of interest in the paper o The risk of detection of plagiarism is considered low o Ignorance concerning what plagiarism is or because another interpretation is given

than that used in the Western academic culture o Laziness: The slightest possible effort for the greatest possible result and still

to earn a degree o Ambition: In the conviction that one can obtain a better score

Page 45: Academic year 2012 – 2013 Els Martens els.martens @ kuleuven.be

PlagiarismHow does someone plagiarize?

Those who consciously plagiarize use various sources and strategies:

o Downloading entire papers from Internet sources or databases; o Cut-and-paste from various sources; o Use of local sources: papers from higher years, papers circulating among students,

etc. …; o Citing references wrongly on purpose to mislead the reader o Translating texts (into Dutch, or from Dutch into another language)

PlagiarismStudents :

Committing plagiarism is the same as dishonesty and fraud. If plagiarism is

established, a penalty follows. Account can be taken of a number of factors:

• The possible penalties for irregularities that can be imposed by the examination committee (thus not by the individual examiner, although he or she must propose a judgement) are set forth in article 154 of the examination regulations.

• An appropriate mark for the assignment or the examination in question • No marks for the assignment or the examination in question • No marks for any of the examinations during the examination period in question • No marks for any of the examinations during the examination period in question and loss of the right to take

any more examinations in that academic year (i.e., exclusion). In this last case, the penalty has to be confirmed by the commission on fraud. To this sanction can be added the loss of the right to enrolment in the next or the next two academic years.

What is APA ?

• American Psychological Association (APA) style is a widely accepted style of documentation, particularly in the social sciences. APA style specifies the names and order of headings, formatting, and organization of quotations and references, and the arrangement of tables, figures, footnotes, and appendices, as well as other manuscript and documentation features.

Page 49: Academic year 2012 – 2013 Els Martens els.martens @ kuleuven.be

If more than 6 authors, only the 6 first will be mentioned and “et all” will be added.

• References will be ranged in alphabetical order on the family name of the first author.

• If there are several sources with the exact same first author, the sources will be ranged according to the year of publication, starting with the oldest sources.

• Titles of books and periodicals will be described in italic.
